The History of the ABC Homes in Richland, WA

Introduction

“ABC homes” in Richland, Washington, are a distinctive collection of mid-20th-century residences known as the “Alphabet Houses” Constructed during and after World War II, these homes were designed to accommodate the influx of workers employed at the nearby Hanford Site, a critical facility in the Manhattan Project.

Origins and Design

In 1943, Spokane architect Gustav Albin Pehrson was tasked with designing housing for the rapidly expanding community of Richland. He developed a series of 25 floor plans, each labeled with a letter of the alphabet, resulting in the term “Alphabet Houses”. These homes were built using high-quality materials, including Douglas fir from Oregon, and featured standard amenities such as basements, hardwood floors, and concrete foundations. The designs ranged from single-story ranch homes to two-story duplexes, accommodating various family sizes and needs.

Construction and Community Planning

Construction began in late April 1943, with the first unit completed by July of the same year. The development was executed under intense pressure to meet wartime demands, with work continuing until early 1945. The homes were strategically placed to avoid flooding, with none built below 370 feet above sea level. The layout of the community was intentionally designed with curving streets and varied house placements to enhance privacy and aesthetics.

Post-War Transition

Initially, all homes were government-owned, and residents paid nominal rent. In 1958, as Richland incorporated, the government began selling the homes to occupants. This transition allowed for personal modifications, leading many homeowners to update their properties while striving to maintain the original character of the homes.

Preservation and Legacy

Today, many Alphabet Houses remain in use, particularly in the Gold Coast Historic District, which encompasses a portion of the original development. This area is recognized for its historical significance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Efforts to preserve these homes include maintaining their unique architectural features and educating the public about their role in Richland’s history. The Alphabet Houses stand as a testament to Richland’s rapid growth during the mid-20th century and the community’s efforts to provide quality housing for its residents during a pivotal time in American history.
