4SPRING CLEANING TIPS

The days are getting longer, and the temperature is slowly starting to creep higher. Spring is officially on its way! But before you throw open the windows and break out the patio furniture, you can take advantage of these winter-to-spring transition days to get a jump-start on your annual spring-cleaning routine. Read on for chores you can cross off your to-do list now while you’re still cozy indoors. Get some of the dusting and tidying out of the way early, and you’ll free yourself up to enjoy those lovely spring days when they fully arrive.

Clean the dryer vent.

Your clothes dryer has no doubt been working hard the past few months and is likely in need of some attention to continue to run safely and efficiently. If you’ve been a little lax about regularly sweeping or vacuuming around your machine, now is a good time to catch up. (Friendly reminder: Always remove lint from the lint screen before every load!) In addition to this general upkeep, you should thoroughly clean the dryer vent at least once a year. Lint buildup not only makes your laundry take longer to dry, but it’s also a fire hazard.

Dust ceiling fans.

Ceiling fans are notorious dust-collectors and sitting stationary for a few months really gives dirt a chance to settle. Fortunately, giving your fan a quick clean before you turn it on for the season is simple.

One way is to tackle dust with an extendable, microfiber duster. Before you start, put a sheet on the floor or over any furniture beneath the fan to catch wayward dust balls. If you’re comfortable on a step stool or ladder, try this popular pillowcase hack instead: Place a clean pillowcase over one blade at a time and then carefully slide it off, trapping the dust inside. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe dust from other parts of the fan as well as the lightbulbs. If your fan has glass shades, soak them in warm, soapy water and dry completely before putting them back on.

Deep-clean kitchen cabinets.

Whether your kitchen is the site of impressive culinary feats or mostly a place where you plate some takeout, this hard-working room is a prime place for dust, grease and fingerprints to collect. Since cabinets take up the most real estate, giving them a thorough cleaning will make the whole space feel fresher.

With cabinets, gentle cleaning is best, so skip the abrasive products and use a solution of warm water and dish soap. First, empty your cabinets and drawers and vacuum up crumbs and debris using a crevice attachment. Next, wet a soft cloth with the soap and water solution and wring it out until it is just damp. Wipe down the inside and outside of the cabinets as well as handles or knobs. Don’t forget to go over frames or trim where grime can accumulate. Follow with a cloth slightly dampened with plain water to rinse and then dry thoroughly with another soft cloth. Use a glass cleaner on any glass cabinet fronts.

Show small appliances some love.

Kitchen appliances work hard on a regular basis and even the smaller ones, such as your toaster and hand mixer, can benefit from a seasonal spruce-up. To banish dried-on batter, smoothie or sauce from your hand mixer and blender base, rub the exteriors with a damp cloth. Don’t forget to wipe the cords (unplugged, of course) as well, since they can also be targets for splatters.

How To Get Your House READY TO SELL

f you’re thinking about selling your home, it’s a good idea to get it into a show state before the for-sale sign is out front.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Everyone has heard that you only have one chance to make a first impression, and it’s true. Begin with a deep clean. Outdated light fixtures are forgivable, but a dirt ring where the carpet meets the baseboard isn’t. It makes potential buyers wonder what else was missed. A deep clean includes steaming carpets, dusting walls, cleaning HVAC returns and vents, and polishing light fixtures.

Even refrigerators and ovens should be cleaned and look appealing. For one homeowner, while everything looked neat, one peek inside the oven killed any potential sale. It looked like a war had been waged there, and made a sight that couldn’t be unseen. Avoid that mistake by cleaning everything, everywhere, thoroughly. Make windows and light fixtures sparkle, and touch up paint dings and smudges.

Really motivated to sell? Have the house painted inside in one neutral color. Fresh paint has a smell that registers as clean and fresh to buyers, and helps them envision living there.

REPAIRS

Give your home a head start by hiring an inspector before the sale. This enables you to find problems before a potential buyer does. Plus, having a list of corrections that were made in advance of the sale makes a positive impression that the house is in good shape. Look at areas of use, such as door handles. Ensure that all the doors, including garage doors, are oiled and are squeak-free.

MORE THAN SUPERFICIAL

Think home buyers won’t look in drawers and under the sink? Think again. Go through cabinets and closets, and pare down. Throw out excess, and keep all closets, cabinets and drawers orderly. One rule of thumb is to remove 30 percent of everything you have to create more visual space. This means having closet rods that aren’t packed full and bending in the middle.

Clear off countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, and make as much clear, open space as you can. If decorating isn’t your strong suit, hire a home stager to help you work with what you’ve got before the Realtor sends a photographer to put up photos that will either close or sink the deal.

ADD STYLE

Nothing can sell a house like curb appeal. It’s like a pretty box with a satin bow: visually inviting. Polish up your home’s look so that the sale isn’t lost at the street. Find small ways to update, like fresh mulch in the front yard beds or a pot of welcoming flowers by the door. Create a welcoming entrance at the foyer, and before long you’ll be putting “sold” sign out front.

"First impressions are everything, and curb appeal is what potential buyers notice first. ... It will signal to buyers that they can expect the same from the interior and bones of the house."

Here are four landscaping projects that industry experts say are worth the investment to boost your home's value.

PLANT TREES. One word: trees. It's the landscaping project nearly every expert recommends for increasing a home's value.

"Trees can add up to $9,000 to your home's value, but you should grow them a distance from the septic system, driveways and the house itself to prevent any potential interferences," suggests Bryan McKenzie, co-founder of Bumper Crop Times. "Otherwise, the value of your home can be decreased as buyers may anticipate costly issues."

What he's referring to is potential root damage to the home's foundation, falling branches or more. Wisely placed trees, however, have consistently proven to be a smart investment, says Dan Beaulieu, real estate agent, contractor and founder of Burlington House Buyers.

2 SPRUCE UP THE FRONT WALKWAY. Your walkway is part of a potential buyer's first impression. So, spend some time making your walkway and entrance look picture-perfect. "If the walkway is well-decorated, it instantly creates a good ambiance for the house," says Dawn Templeton, owner and real estate broker with Idaho-based Templeton Real Estate Group. "Plant flowers by the two sides of the walkway, and keep the walkways illuminated properly. It will create a dramatic beauty."

INVEST IN A WELLMAINTAINED LAWN

Another major element of curb appeal you should never underestimate is the power of a well-cared-for-lawn or front yard. These have a huge impact on the overall desirability of your home. "My general rule for landscaping is that the home should look at least as nice as the neighboring homes," says de Jong. "At the very least, home sellers should have the lawn mowed, trees pruned, weeds pulled and garden spruced up with some colorful seasonal flowers, because curb appeal is essential to selling a home."

An unmaintained lawn, on the other hand, is not only a curb-appeal deterrent; it also sends a red flag to potential buyers that the home wasn't taken care of, de Jong adds.

CONSTRUCT A FIRE PIT.

Fire pits soared in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic while we were all stuck at home, and they continue to be a major outdoor landscape attraction that increases property value. "A fire pit is an arguably universally beloved home feature, perfect for families, young couples and anyone who loves to host and entertain guests," says de Jong. "When built using less expensive materials ... homeowners can increase the ROI of a fire pit to more than 80% and recoup 78% of the costs," adds de Jong.
