more than just a housing development it is a community transformation Since its inception in 2022, the project has been steadily progressing, with over 1 400 housing opportunities on the horizon, complemented by essential social amenities and critical infrastructure
The meeting earlier in November went beyond communicating information, also tackling important administrative matters, including warnings about the unauthorised rental of government-subsidised housing and assurances about fair site allocation

While a small section of road in the town centre has been recently resurfaced, the situation remains dire The newly completed area is already showing signs of significant wear, raising red flags about the quality of work and the standards followed during repairs
“The most pressing issue is the unrestricted movement of heavy trucks through Fouriesburg These massive vehicles are literally breaking the town’s roads apart, causing damage far beyond what the original infrastructure was designed to withstand,” says Rügheimer
Of particular concern is Steyn Street, a critical route for schoolchildren The road has become a dangerous obstacle course of potholes and uneven surfaces, posing serious risks to both pedestrians and vehicles, especially during busy school hours
Robertson Street, which leads to the popular Meiringskloof Nature Park, tells a similar story
As a key tourism route, its poor condition creates a negative first impression for visitors and directly impacts the town’s economic potential astructure
The DA is calling for the following immediate
and comprehensive action:
■ Prioritise repairs on Steyn and Robertson Streets
■ Implement strict regulations for heavy truck movements
■ Investigate the premature deterioration of recently resurfaced roads
■ Develop a comprehensive road rehabilitation plan

However, the municipality's approach raises serious legal and ethical concerns Under the Water Services Act 108 of 1997, denying an entire community access to water is not only unconstitutional but fundamentally wrong The Constitution explicitly guarantees every citizen's right to adequate water, obligating local government to take reasonable measures to ensure this basic human need is met
The legal framework is clear: municipalities must provide alternative water services if supply is interrupted for more than 24 hours This includes ensuring at least 10 litres of potable water per person daily Moreover, indigent households are entitled to a minimum free water supply of six kilolitres per month, which cannot be disconnected
What is particularly troubling is the municipality's hasty implementation of new policies At a Special Council Meeting in May this year, several policies were adopted, including credit control and debt collection guidelines Yet, these documents remain unpublished and have not undergone public scrutiny a critical step in transparent governance
For residents facing challenges, several options exist: arrange payment terms, settle accounts for potential discounts, lodge written disputes for incorrect charges, and seek legal assistance if necessary
“It is crucial to understand that legislation only permits withholding payment for demonstrably incorrect charges Residents are advised to meticulously document any service discrepancies,” says the DA’s cllr Suzette Steyn of the Mafube Municipality

Die 63-jarigie Willie Marais, ’ n boorling van Kroonstad, sê hy het begin versamel om ’ n nalatingskap vir die volgende geslag agter te laat Hy versamel nie vir ’ n finansiële gewin nie maar bloot vir die pret daarvan “Dit bring my baie vreugde en genot om na iets spesifiek te soek en dan die kosbare item op te spoor, ” sê Marais

Residents of the Nketoana Municipality are demanding the urgent completion of the central water purification plant in Reitz, shedding light on critical infrastructure struggles that have long plagued the community During a recent oversight visit, DA councillors Thinus Blignaut and Anelia Smit discovered a half-constructed site that starkly illustrates the municipality's ongoing management challenges The project, initially awarded to Keep It Reactive Trading and Projects in March 2023, was meant to address the desperate water needs of Reitz, Petsana, and Mamafubedu However, the contractor abandoned the site before completing the critical infrastructure, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty and frustration Despite the original completion deadline of 18 January this year, the project remains unfinished The municipality issued a termination notice on 28 March 28 after unsuccessful attempts to bring the contractor back to complete the work The current status reveals of the total R 40 322 246 60 budget, only R 18 852 943 43 (46 76%) has been spent, with less than half the work accomplished The human cost of this delay is profound Newly built storage dams stand empty, water infrastructure remains idle, and local residents continue to grapple with ongoing water crises The DA councillors have been vocal about the
