Slagoffers miljoene uit die sak gejaag
Eiendombedrog gestraf Die direkteur van ’n eiendomsagentskap en ’n eiendomsagent wat kopers en verkopers in ’n bedrogspul van sowat R27 miljoen ingeloop het, is tot onderskeidelik 20 en 18 jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis. Dit kom nadat hulle geld ontvang het vir transaksies wat ooit afgehandel is nie. Die bedrog het tussen 2014 en 2025 plaasgevind.
Volgens die Valke het Petrus Wilhemus Viljoen (52), direkteur van Blue Key Properties, en eiendomsagent Samuel Kamolase Mofokeng (48) woonhuise te koop geadverteer en voornemende kopers met besigtigings en ook aanbiedinge om te koop bygestaan. Die slagoffers is dan opdrag gegee om die koopgeld in Viljoen se bankrekening in te betaal. Hoewel die geld ontvang is, is die
eiendomsoordragte nooit afgehandel nie. Voornemende kopers en verkopers is hierdeur benadeel, terwyl die beskuldigdes na bewering geld vir persoonlike gewin aangewend het. Die streekhof in Bethlehem het Viljoen op 4 Augustus op verskeie aanklagte van bedrog tot 20 jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis. Hy is ook tot ses jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis nadat hy die Wet op Eiendomspraktisyns oortree het. Die vonnisse sal
gelyktydig uitgedien word. Mofokeng is op verskeie aanklagte van bedrog tot 18 jaar regstreekse gevangenisstraf gevonnis. Hy is ook vier jaar gevangenisstraf opgelê vir oortredings van die Wet op Eiendomspraktisyns, wat gelyktydig met sy ander vonnis uitgedien sal word. Blue Key Properties Brokers is op verskeie aanklagte van bedrog skuldig bevind en met ’n boete van R3 miljoen gestraf, wat vir vyf jaar opgeskort is.
Die opskorting geld op voorwaarde dat die maatskappy nie gedurende dié tydperk weer aan ’n soortgelyke misdryf skuldig bevind word nie. Brig. Paulus Mbongo, waarnemende provinsiale hoof van die Valke in die Vrystaat, het die vonnisse verwelkom. Systemic failures inspire little faith Residents and businesses in the Moqhaka Local Municipality continue to experience frustration over the municipality’s ongoing failure to distribute monthly municipal accounts by email, raising concerns about revenue collection, financial management and transparency. With the South African Post Office (Sapo) no longer regarded as a reliable means of delivering municipal accounts, many consumers rely almost exclusively on electronic statements to receive their monthly bills. The municipality’s failure to distribute these accounts has left residents uncertain about their balances and has complicated financial planning for businesses. The issue comes as Moqhaka faces significant financial challenges. Critics argue that, instead of strengthening revenue collection, the municipality is making it increasingly difficult for consumers to pay for services by failing to issue accounts timeously. The DA said it intends to pursue the matter through the municipality’s oversight processes. DA councillor Johan Spaski Geldenhuis said he would submit follow-up questions to the acting municipal manager Lizzy Ntsepe, and continue holding the administration accountable until the municipality restores its bulk email distribution service and communicates more effectively with residents. According to the DA, the matter was previously raised during a council meeting, where councillors expressed concern that residents were effectively forced to make monthly payments without first receiving their accounts in order to avoid service disconnections or falling into arrears. The party said the situation also creates accounting and cash-flow challenges for businesses that require accurate monthly statements.
The DA further argued that the municipality is also affected by the delays, as the failure to issue accounts on time hampers cash flow and increases the administrative burden on officials who must assist residents requesting duplicate statements. During recent council discussions, several DA councillors questioned why the municipality had once again failed to distribute accounts via its bulk email system. According to Geldenhuis, the newly appointed acting chief financial officer (CFO) Jimmy Maswanganyi indicated that the problem related to a monthly payment of R600 required to maintain the municipality’s bulk email service. Geldenhuis alleged that the payment process had been stopped by the Ntsepe. The DA described it as unacceptable that a municipality experiencing severe financial pressure would allow its revenue collection processes to be disrupted over such a relatively small monthly amount. The party argued that the financial consequences of failing to issue accounts far outweigh the cost of maintaining the service. The party also claimed the municipality had failed to distribute media statements and public notices through its communication channels for the past two months, further reducing transparency and limiting the flow of information to residents. The DA has called on the acting municipal manager to immediately restore the municipality’s bulk email account distribution service, publicly explain the repeated failure to issue municipal accounts, respond to the outstanding questions submitted by Geldenhuis, and ensure that regular communication with residents resumes without further delay. “Residents have a right to receive accurate municipal accounts on time and to expect a municipality that communicates openly, transparently and responsibly,” says Geldenhuis.
Protection of facilities falling short Residents of Reitz were left without electricity after cable thieves targeted municipal power infrastructure, forcing the Nketoana Local Municipality to temporarily cut the electricity supply while repair teams worked to restore the damaged power line. This is the latest in a growing wave of cable theft across the Free State. Similar attacks have repeatedly disrupted electricity and water services in several towns, leaving communities without essential services, placing additional strain on municipal budgets and forcing taxpayers to shoulder the cost of ongoing repairs. Beyond the financial impact, the destruction of critical infrastructure poses a
serious risk to public safety and undermines local economic activity. The DA said it would submit oversight questions to the Nketoana Local Municipality and call for urgent intervention to strengthen the protection of municipal infrastructure. DA councillor Anelia Smit said the recurring thefts pointed to a failure to adequately secure electricity substations and other critical facilities despite repeated incidents. Smit said key electricity and water infrastructure remained vulnerable because of inadequate security. She called for the urgent implementation of stronger physical security measures, controlled access to municipal sites and closer
cooperation between the municipality, the police and other law enforcement agencies to combat organised cable theft. The DA has also urged the municipality to develop a comprehensive strategy to safeguard critical infrastructure, strengthen security at electricity and water substations and ensure that those responsible for the theft and sabotage of infrastructure are prosecuted. “The residents of Reitz deserve reliable service delivery and the assurance that their public infrastructure is properly protected,” Smit said, adding that the DA would hold the municipality accountable until effective measures were put in place to curb the ongoing theft of municipal infrastructure.

Residents in Kroonstad, Maokeng, Brentpark, Viljoenskroon, and Steynsrus continue to face prolonged periods without street lighting after underground electricity cables are stolen and vandalised. The growing destruction of municipal infrastructure has become a major public safety concern. Darkened streets create opportunities for criminals to operate undetected, while residents, motorists and pedestrians are left to navigate poorly lit neighbourhoods. Repeated instances of cable theft also disrupts electricity infrastructure and places further strain on municipal finances as stolen cables have to be replaced at significant cost. The DA says it will raise the escalating problem during upcoming meetings of Moqhaka's Technical Portfolio Committee, where it plans to propose measures aimed at protecting municipal infrastructure, improving maintenance and strengthening community safety. According to the party, underground electricity cables have repeatedly been dug up and stolen in areas such as Brentpark and Maokeng, while inadequate maintenance of public lighting has allowed large parts of smaller towns, including Viljoenskroon and Steynsrus, to remain in darkness for extended periods. The DA has also called for authorities to investigate businesses and scrapyards suspected of purchasing stolen copper cables, arguing that the illegal market continues to drive the theft of municipal infrastructure. It says burnt cables are frequently found near scrapyards, making it difficult to determine where the stolen material originated. The party further supports the introduction of a reward for information leading to the successful conviction of cable thieves, saying many residents know who is responsible but are reluctant to come forward. It maintains that tackling cable theft will require stronger law enforcement, improved infrastructure maintenance and greater political commitment. According to the DA, the continued destruction of municipal infrastructure is costing the municipality, businesses and residents millions of rand each year, while undermining service delivery and making communities increasingly vulnerable to crime.
DEFACEMENT OF PROPERTY PLAGUES RESIDENTS A surge in vandalism of streetlight infrastructure across Dihlabeng is continually plunging neighbourhoods into darkness, increasing safety concerns for residents and leaving taxpayers to shoulder the mounting cost of repairs. Damaged light poles, severed electrical cables, and vandalised streetlights have become an increasingly common sight, forcing motorists and pedestrians to navigate poorly lit streets after dark. Panorama is among the areas most severely affected, where several streetlight poles have recently been tampered with. Electrical wiring has either been stolen or deliberately cut, while similar incidents have
been reported in other parts of the municipality, suggesting a widespread pattern of destruction rather than isolated cases. In some instances, cables have been cut and left behind, raising concerns that the damage may extend beyond theft to deliberate acts of sabotage. The DA has written to the Free State Provincial Director of Public Works, calling for urgent intervention and seeking clarity on measures to curb the escalating vandalism of municipal streetlight infrastructure. DA councillor Estie Senekal said the party wanted to know what preventative measures were currently in place to combat vandalism and cable theft, and whether additional strategies
were being considered to protect public assets. The continued destruction of streetlight infrastructure is placing additional strain on already limited municipal resources. Funds that could be used to improve service delivery and maintain infrastructure are instead being redirected to replace damaged cables, repair vandalised poles and restore street lighting. The DA maintains that safeguarding public infrastructure is just as important as repairing it and has urged authorities to strengthen security measures, prevent further incidents of vandalism and ensure that affected areas are restored without unnecessary delay.

Open invitation to uplift others with talent Young gospel singers are being offered the chance to showcase both their musical talent and their faith when they take part in The Call, a new gospel singing competition forming part of the free Ignite and Revive Christian Festival in Kroonstad this September. The competition aims to discover the country’s next generation of Christian vocalists while providing a platform for young performers to use their gifts to inspire others and glorify God through music. Well-known South African music artist Ilán van Staden will be among the judges tasked with selecting the competition’s winners. The competition is open to solo gospel singers between the ages of 10 and 30. Entrants are required to

throughout the competition. The top three performers will share in a range of prizes, while organisers have also promised several surprise awards. Festival organisers say The Call is about far more than finding talented singers. “One voice can ignite a town. One song can touch a heart forever. Use your gift to glorify God,” says the organisers. COOPERATION IS VITAL The SAPS intensified its crime prevention efforts in the Fezile Dabi District when officers conducted a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) as part of Operation Shanela II on the R549 near Deneysville in the first week of August. The operation was led by Fezile Dabi District commissioner, Maj. Gen. Moses Makubo, who joined officers in stopping and searching vehicles, engaging with motorists and encouraging road users to comply with traffic laws – all while supporting crime prevention initiatives. Police inspected drivers’ licences and vehicle documentation, searched vehicles, and checked the legal status of foreign nationals. The operation also targeted stolen vehicles and property, illegal firearms, drugs, and motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Makubo stressed that continuous cooperation between the police and communities remained vital in creating safer roads and reducing crime across the district.

Vir Linda Louwrens (47) van Kroonstad lê daardie bydrae nie in groot gebare nie, maar in eenvoudige dade van omgee. Haar jaarlikse skoenboksprojek bring sedert 2021 vreugde en hoop aan inwoners van ouetehuise en kinders wat andersins Kersfees sonder ’n geskenk sou deurbring. Wat vyf jaar gelede as ’n klein uitreik-aksie begin het, het mettertyd tot ’n gevestigde gemeenskapsprojek ontwikkel. Die doel was van die begin af eenvoudig: om mense wat oor die feestyd nie by hul families kan wees nie, te laat weet dat hulle nie vergete is nie. Aanvanklik is skoenbokse net aan een groep ontvangers oorhandig, maar die projek het sedertdien uitgebrei. Vandag ontvang inwoners van Huis Edelkroon, Fronekroon en Arboretum asook kinders van die plaaslike kinderhuis elke jaar ’n spesiaal voorbereide

geskenkboks. Elke skoenboks word met sorg saamgestel. Bokse vir inwoners van die ouetehuise bevat gewoonlik lekkernye, bad- en stortprodukte asook ’n boekie en pen, terwyl kinders met speelgoed, skryfbehoeftes, klere en ander bruikbare geskenke bederf word. “Dit was net op ons harte om uit te reik na mense wat nie oor Kersfees by hul gesinne is nie en dalk geen geskenk ontvang nie,” sê Louwrens. Die projek word jaarliks deur haar gesin ondersteun, terwyl
haar kollegas, Spaski Geldenhuys en Marelize Boeije, ook ’n rol speel om die skenkings te organiseer en die uitreik-aksie moontlik te maak. Louwrens sê die gemeenskap speel ’n onmisbare rol in die sukses van die projek. Mense kan hul eie skoenbokse pak of R400 skenk, waarna die span die bokse namens die borge opmaak. Die insamelingsprojek begin gewoonlik in die eerste week van November en duur tot 15 Desember. “Vroue is dikwels die mense wat ander eerste raaksien, bemoedig en ondersteun. Dit is daardie klein gebare wat uiteindelik ’n groot verskil in iemand se lewe maak,” sê sy. Louwrens woon reeds die afgelope 44 jaar in Kroonstad. Sy dien as DA-raadslid en saam met haar man, Johan, is sy die mede-eienaar van SmartCo-begrafnisversekering. Die egpaar het twee kinders, Johan (22) en Amurè (19), wat altwee by Norval en Kie werk en hul studie as geoktrooieerde rekenmeesters voortsit. Sy hoop die skoenboksprojek sal aanhou groei en nog meer mense sal inspireer om deur eenvoudige dade van omgee, ’n verskil in ander se lewe mee te bring. WOMEN ASKED TO FORGO SHAME AND SEEK HELP In August, celebrated as Women’s Month in South Africa, women are urged anew to seek medical advice if they notice persistent itching, pain or unusual changes affecting the external genital area, as health experts warn that embarrassment continues to delay the diagnosis of serious conditions such as vulval cancer. CANSA encourages women to become familiar with what is normal for their bodies and to speak openly about intimate health concerns. South African research shows vulval cancer is becoming more common. An analysis of National Cancer Registry data found that the incidence of the disease increased by an estimated 8% a year between 2011 and 2021, with the sharpest rise recorded among women aged 15 to 44 and 45 to 54. According to CANSA’s summary of the 2024 National Cancer Registry, cancer of the vulva ranked among the 10 most commonly diagnosed
invasive cancers in South African women. During the reporting period, 1 078 cases were confirmed through tissue examinations, with the estimated lifetime risk standing at one in 347 women. “Women are often taught to feel embarrassed about discussing intimate health concerns. This can delay them from seeking help when symptoms persist or keep returning,” says Lorraine Govender, CANSA’s national manager for health programmes. Warning signs that should not be ignored include: persistent itching, burning or pain; a lump or swelling; thickened skin; a sore that does not heal; changes in skin colour; unexplained bleeding; pain when urinating or during sex; and symptoms that repeatedly return despite treatment. Health experts say recognising symptoms early and seeking medical advice without delay can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment.

Skryfdroom word verwerklik Ná jare waarin haar gedigte in bloemlesings verskyn het en haar woorde lesers landwyd geraak het, het die Kroonstadse spraakterapeut Nelmari Barnard haar eerste digbundel, Die dans oor die Lewenskoord, uitgegee. Die bundel is die verwesenliking van ’n skryfdroom wat enkele jare gelede onverwags begin ontvou het en nou in 52 gedigte beslag gekry het. Vir Barnard (52), wat as senior onderwyskundige en die enigste spraakterapeut in die Fezile Dabi-distrik werk, is skryf veel meer as ’n stokperdjie. Dit is ’n manier om die lewe, die natuur en die menslike ervaring in woorde vas te vang. Sy het in Kroonstad grootgeword en in 1991 aan die Hoërskool Kroonstad gematrikuleer voordat sy B. Kommunikasiepatologie-kwalifikasie aan die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) verwerf het. Ná vier jaar as nywerheidsoudioloog in Johannesburg, waar sy meer as 52 000 gehoortoetse afgeneem het, het sy in 2000 na haar tuisdorp teruggekeer. Sedertdien dien sy die Vrystaatse onderwysdepartement as senior onderwyskundige by distriksondersteuningsdienste. As die enigste spraakterapeut in die span ondersteun sy skole in al 15 dorpe van die Fezile Dabi-distrik, wat haar gereeld op lang, stil paaie neem waar baie van haar beste idees ontstaan. Hoewel sy reeds op skool aan opstelkompetisies deelgeneem het, het haar ernstige skryfreis eers in 2020 begin toe sy kinderstories begin skryf en illustreer het. In September dieselfde jaar het haar eerste gedig onverwags sy ontstaan gevind. “Halfpad oor die S-brug hier in Kroonstad het die woorde skielik net gekom,” vertel sy. Sy het afgetrek, ’n stemnota gemaak en die gedig later tuis neergeskryf – ’n metode wat vandag steeds deel van haar skryfproses vorm. Haar liefde vir taal is reeds vroeg deur haar pa Johannes Barnard aangewakker. Sy uitgebreide biblioteek en voorlesings uit onder meer Kambrokind, Poens en Raka het ’n blywende indruk gelaat en haar liefde vir Afrikaans laat groei. Die afsterwe van haar pa in Mei 2021 sou ’n keerpunt word. Om hulde aan hom te bring, het sy ses gedigte vir drie nasionale digkompetisies ingestuur. Tot haar verbasing is al ses aanvaar vir publikasie. Sedertdien het haar digloopbaan vinnig momentum gekry. Altesaam 39 van haar
gedigte is reeds in nege bloemlesings en op die webwerf Skryf in Afrikaans gepubliseer. Haar inskrywings is sedert 2022 elke jaar as afdelingwenners vir die Stemme uit die Suiderland-kompetisie genomineer. Nog ’n hoogtepunt het vroeër vanjaar gevolg toe die Genootskap vir die Handhawing van Afrikaans (GHA) haar as een van die ontvangers van ’n publikasieprys aangewys het. Die toekenning, wat in samewerking met Groep 7 Drukkers aangebied word, bied jaarliks aan ’n klein groepie digters die geleentheid om hul eie bundels uit te gee. Die resultaat is Die dans oor die Lewenskoord, ’n bundel van 69 bladsye. Die natuur dien dikwels as inspirasie vir haar skryfwerk. Storms, die Vrystaatse landskap en die ritme van die seisoene vind gereeld neerslag in haar verse, terwyl sommige gedigte soos kortverhale ontvou en die leser op 'n reis deur tyd neem. Hoewel haar eerste digbundel pas die lig gesien het, speel Barnard met idees vir ’n bundel kortverhale wat moontlik gedigte, sketse en prosawerk sal kombineer, maar sê sy verkies om nie te ver vooruit te beplan nie. “Mens loop die gevaar om interessante afdraaipaaie wat na nuwe wonderwêrelde lei, mis te loop,” sê sy.

Vandag, ná twee nieroorplantings, deel hy sy lewensverhaal in die boek My Lewe in 'n Hartklop – 'n verhaal van verlies, geloof en hoop waarmee hy ander wil bemoedig. Du Plessis, wat in Bethlehem woon en as onderwyser werk, het in 2017 ernstig siek geword. Ná verskeie mediese ondersoeke het dokters vasgestel dat hy aan eindstadium-nierversaking ly en dringend met hemodialise moes begin. Hy het later sy eerste nieroor-
planting ontvang, maar die oorgeplante nier het ongelukkig misluk en hy moes weer met dialise begin. Daarna het hy ’n tweede nieroorplanting ontvang, wat vandag steeds goed funksioneer en hom in staat stel om weer ’n aktiewe en vol lewe te lei. Du Plessis, wat aan die Hoërskool Witteberg gematrikuleer en daarna ’n B.Ed.-graad in Intermediêre Fase Onderwys voltooi het, beskryf sy pad as een van uitdagings en onsekerheid. Witteberg-span word met Donation direly needed nuwe aanstellings versterk Die Hoërskool Witteberg in Bethlehem het aan die begin van die derde kwartaal twee nuwe personeellede in sy geledere verwelkom. Denisé Jordaan het as rekeningkunde-onderwyser aangesluit, terwyl Marike Kilian as die skool se bemarker aangestel is. Jordaan bring ses jaar se onderwyservaring uit Douglas in die Noord-Kaap saam, waar sy rekeningkunde en ekonomiese en bestuurswetenskap (EBW) vir leerders van gr. 7 tot gr. 12 aangebied het. Benewens haar klaskamerervaring was sy ook nou betrokke by verskeie projekte van die Noord-Kaapse onderwysdepartement. August is National Organ Donor Awareness Month, but the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa (ODF) says thousands of potential donors are failing to complete the simple step that could one day save lives. The foundation has revealed that 75% of people who begin the online organ donor registration process never submit their application, meaning they are not added to the national donor registry. The statistic stands in stark contrast to a recent ODF street survey, which found that 80% of South Africans would willingly accept an organ transplant if they or a loved one needed one. According to the foundation, the reluctance to register is not linked to age, race or gender. Instead, misinformation and a lack of understanding continue to discourage many from becoming registered donors. “People fear the unknown, which is why it's so important to educate them and give them the facts,” said Jooste Vermeulen, executive director of business development for the ODF. The foundation says persistent myths remain one of the biggest obstacles to increasing donor numbers. Among the most common misconceptions are that organs are removed before a donor has died, that South Africa has a secret black market for organs, or that doctors will not fight as hard to save the life of someone registered as an organ donor. The ODF says these claims are completely false. Another important misconception is that registering as a donor automatically authorises

Hokkie en netbal seëvier Die Hoërskool Witteberg van Bethlehem het die Wesgrow Sentrale Skole Sportreeks vir 2026 afgesluit met puik vertonings op die netbal- en meisieshokkiebane, hoewel die Hoërskool Diamantveld van Kimberley die dag se rugbywedstryde in Bethlehem oorheers het.

Fietsryers skitter Die Hoërskool Voortrekker in Bethlehem se bergfietsryers het ’n sterk spanvertoning gelewer deur die tweede ronde van die MTB-skolereeks in die algehele derde plek af te sluit. Verskeie van die fietsryers het boonop hul deursettingsvermoë bewys deur eers hul verpligtinge op die rugby- en hokkieveld na te kom voordat hulle aan dié wedrenne deelgeneem het. Die tweede ronde van die reeks is op 25 Julie op die Maluti-baan in Bethlehem beslis. In die afdeling vir subjuniors was Marthinus de Wet tweede. Die afdeling vir jeug het goeie uitslae opgelewer, met Adriano Cruywagen wat 7de was; Deon van Zyl 8ste; Janco Fourie 9de; Victor Nel 17de en Hanno van den Heever 21ste. Chelsea-Lee Williamson het in die afdeling vir juniors met ’n tweede plek uitgeblink, terwyl Alicia Herbert derde was. Voortrekker se gemengde aflosspan het die dag met ’n tweede plek afgesluit en sodoende tot die span se derde plek algeheel bygedra.
PODIUMPLEKKE VIR SKUTS Die Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad se boogskutters het weer hul staal getoon deur op 1 Augustus uitstekende uitslae in die bullseye- en 3D-afdelings van ’n Vrystaat-boogskietkompetisie te behaal. Verskeie podiumplekke en algehele titels is verwerf, en sodoende is die skool se sterk boogskiettradisie voortgesit. In die bullseye-afdeling het Kaylie Steyl 275 punte aangeteken om derde algeheel onder die hoërskoolmeisies en eerste in gr. 12 te eindig. Marione Jansen van Rensburg was met 274 punte eerste in gr. 11; terwyl Leanu de Munnik-Labuschagne 267 punte en Leané Olivier 240 punte behaal het. Dié twee is albei in gr. 10. Danie Theron (gr. 9) was die uitstaande skut van die dag. Hy het 288 punte aangeteken en was eerste algeheel; eerste onder die hoërskoolskuts; en ook eerste in gr. 9. Aiden Wardeck was met 265 punte eerste in gr. 8, terwyl Cobus Fourie met 257 punte tweede in dié graad was. Dylán van Schoor (gr. 9) het 224 punte aangeteken. Die Trio-skuts het ook in die 3D-afdeling uitstekend gevaar. Kaylie was met 252 punte tweede algeheel onder die hoërskoolmeisies. Marione het 243 punte aangeteken; Leané 228 punte; en Leanu was met 267 punte tweede algeheel en tweede onder die hoërskoolseuns. Danie het uitstekende vorm voortgesit deur 277 punte aan te teken en die eerste plek algeheel te behaal, terwyl hy ook eerste onder die hoërskoolskuts en eerste onder die hoërskoolseuns was. Cobus het 252 punte aangeteken, Aiden 231 en Dylán het die kompetisie met 155 punte voltooi.
Op 1 Augustus het Witteberg en Diamantveld in die reeks kragte gemeet. Witteberg se netbalspanne het vier oorwinnings uit agt wedstryde behaal, met die eerste span wat in ’n spannende kragmeting met 35 – 33 geseëvier het. Die o.15B-, o.19C- en o.14Dspanne het ook as wenners van die baan gestap, terwyl die o.14C-span met ’n gelykopuitslag van 9 – 9 tevrede moes wees. Weens Witteberg se deelname aan die Suid-Afrikaanse netbalkampioenskap is nie al die beplande netbalwedstryde teen Diamantveld afgehandel nie. Die meisieshokkiespanne het hul uitstekende seisoen voortgesit deur al drie hul wedstryde te wen. Die eerste span het met ’n indrukwekkende oorwinning van 7 – 0 sy teenstander oorrompel, terwyl die o.14A-span
met 6 – 2 en die o.16A-span met 3 – 0 geseëvier het. Op die seunshokkieveld het Diamantveld beïndruk. Witteberg se eerste span het met 4 – 7 verloor, terwyl die o.16Aspan met 0 – 5 vasgeval het. Die rugbyveld het aan Diamantveld behoort, met die Kimberley-span wat al nege wedstryde gewen het. Die besoekers het van vroeg af hul stempel afgedruk en die dag se rugbyaksie oorheers. Die eerstespan het met 7 – 56 die knie gebuig, terwyl die ander uitslae soos volg was: ■ o.14A verloor 14 – 34, ■ o.14B verloor 7 – 35, ■ o.15A verloor 17 – 28, ■ o.15B verloor 0 – 54, ■ o.16A verloor 17 – 46, ■ o.16B verloor 26 – 29, ■ derde span verloor 12 – 46, en ■ tweede span verloor 17 – 52. Die 15-jarige Dehan Cilliers, ’n gr. 9-leerder aan die Hoërskool Voortrekker in Bethlehem, gaan van 31 Augustus tot 3 September Suid-Afrika op die Confederation of Schools Sport for Southern Africa- (Cossasa) atletiekkampioenskap in Zimbabwe verteenwoordig nadat hy ná ’n uitsonderlike seisoen sy plek in die nasionale o.17-span losgehardloop het. Dehan het onlangs die nuus ontvang dat hy die Groen en Goud sal aantrek – die beloning vir maande se harde werk en ’n seisoen waarin hy hom as een van Suid-Afrika se voorste jong middel- en langafstandatlete gevestig het. Hy het vanjaar vier medaljes op nasionale vlak verower. Dit sluit in twee bronsmedaljes in die 3 000 m in die ASA Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskap en die Suid-Afrikaanse skole-atletiekkampioenskap. Hy het ook ’n silwermedalje in die 1 500 m in die Suid-Afrikaanse skole-atletiekkampioenskap verwerf, waarna hy sy plek in die nasionale span verdien het. Dehan het sy seisoen verder versterk deur ’n silwermedalje in die o.16-afdeling van die ASA Street Mile te verower. Agter sy sukses staan sy pa en afrigter, Ebanie Cilliers, wat hom reeds van gr. 1 af afrig en hom deur elke fase van sy atletiekloopbaan ondersteun. Vir Dehan is die toekenning van Suid-AfriDehan Cilliers van die Hoërskool Voortrekkaanse kleure die hoogtepunt van ’n merkwaarker in Bethlehem is vir die Suid-Afrikaanse dige jaar waarin sy talent, deursettingsvermoë en atletiekspan gekies.
