A Dihlabeng Municipality fraudster has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.
Reitumetse Moeng, a 28-year-old from Bethlehem, has been found guilty and sentenced for fraud committed against the Dihlabeng Local Municipality.
e Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court handed down a three-year suspended prison sentence on ursday 22 January, contingent on Moeng repaying the municipality a signi cant sum. e conviction stems from a discovery made in 2021, when irregularities at the municipality brought to light the existence of “ghost employees”.
ese individuals were reportedly receiving monthly salaries despite not being present for work.
e matter was promptly reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit in Bethlehem. A meticulous investigation was launched, revealing that Moeng was among those who had been fraudulently receiving a monthly salary from the municipality. is illicit activity is reported to have occurred between May 2021 and January 2022. Moeng was arrested on 14 July last year and subsequently released on bail. e court’s decision saw her sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, which has been wholly suspended. is suspension is conditional upon her repaying an amount of R 84 598,22 back to the Dihlabeng Local Municipality. is sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of defrauding public institutions and the commitment of law enforcement to ensuring accountability.

A 32-year-old man, Ncebo Bhengu, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Harrismith Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of house robbery.
The conviction last week
follows an incident on 1 March 2025 when police responded to a complaint in Lotusville, Harrismith.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that the 62-yearold victim, Dineo Moloi, was
stabbed in the abdomen during the robbery and taken to hospital by a private vehicle.
The case was investigated by Capt. V.J. Zwane, whose efforts led to the successful prosecution and sentencing of the accused.

In the wake of devastating wildfires that ravaged the Overberg region of the Western Cape, a beacon of hope has emerged for five lions from the Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary.
aptation enclosures. A dedicated team of animal caretakers will closely monitor their well-being as they adjust to their new surroundings.
Fiona Miles, director at Four Paws South Africa, expressed her solidarity with the Panthera Africa team.

These animals have been relocated to the Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in Bethlehem, thanks to a swift and compassionate partnership with the global animal welfare organisation Four Paws.
The fires presented an immediate and critical threat to the sanctuary’s residents.
Recognising the dire situation and the urgent need for a safe haven, Panthera Africa, an ethical sanctuary dedicated to the welfare of captive-bred big cats, reached out to Four Paws for assistance.
Before embarking on the journey, each of the five lions underwent thorough veterinary examinations. These crucial checks ensured their health was optimal for the long trip, a testament to the meticulous care provided by both organisations. Upon arrival at Lionsrock in Bethlehem, the lions were settled into specially prepared ad-
“Our hearts go out to the Panthera Africa team during this incredibly difficult time,” says Miles.
“We know how much love and dedication they have poured into the sanctuary. When they asked for help, we were ready to stand alongside them and ensure these lions have a safe place to recover while their home is being rebuilt.”
Lizaene Cornwall, co-founder of Panthera Africa, says seeing the animals leave their home has been heartbreaking.
“But knowing they are safe and cared for by Four Paws gives us hope. We are endlessly thankful to Lionsrock and all the other sanctuaries that have stood by us during this crisis.”
The lions’ journey to Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary represents not just a physical relocation, but a vital lifeline, offering them a secure environment to recover and a promise of eventual return to a rebuilt Panthera Africa.

e DA in the Dihlabeng Municipality is taking a stand after a revealing visit from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to the Free State.
Stark nancial reality has come to light, with the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional A airs (CoGTA) exposing a staggering municipal debt to Eskom of over R1,3 billion.
“Our municipality faces an unprecedented nancial crisis, ranking second in Eskom debt within the Free State, just behind Matjhabeng’s R8,7 billion liability,” says Hilton Maasdorp, DA councillor in Dihlabeng.
e nancial strain in question becomes even more alarming when considering Dihlabeng’s relatively small size.
With a mere 57% collection rate, the municipality struggles to generate enough income to address its mounting debt.
A detailed report to the NCOP in fact reveals additional concerning metrics.
e Municipal Infrastructure Grant allocation of R35 094 000 remains critically underutilised, with only 16% spent by November, a percentage
which is well below the expected 30% expenditure rate.
e DA has now developed a comprehensive strategy to address these critical issues, proposing several targeted interventions, such as the following: implementing an aggressive credit control plan, establishing robust debt management mechanisms, expanding support for indigent communities, developing sound billing systems, ringfencing electricity revenue to service Eskom debt and enforcing strict accountability for municipal o cials.
“We are committed to holding the ANC-run municipality accountable,” Maasdorp emphasised.
“Our goal is to bring complete transparency to revenue ows, as well as to implement meaningful nancial reforms.”
e DA will continue to apply pressure, pushing for the adoption and e ective implementation of these proposals.
e situation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of sound municipal management and the potential consequences of nancial mismanagement.

be required to obtain a temporary licence during the online entry process, while licensed club athletes may enter using their valid licence details.
The Mimosa Mall Marathon promises a vibrant race-day atmosphere.
The running village at Mimosa Mall will be packed with exhibitors and lively activations, creating a festive hub for runners, supporters and families to enjoy.
Hosted in association with Bloemfontein Striders and the

Louzanne Coetzee Foundation, the Mimosa Mall Marathon has grown into a standout fixture on the local and regional running calendar, known for its strong organisation, welcoming environment and community spirit.
Entries for the 42km and 21km races close on 26 February. Runners looking to take on 10km or 5km may still register the day before the race at the registration village. To enter, and for more information, visit mimosamall.co.za.
