Positive change can already be seen thanks to the actions of three dynamic Virginia women who are single-handedly restoring the once beautiful town to its former glory.

“Before starting this huge task, people were requested to send in their CVs, as we were initially intending to employ the youth. The current crew are those who put up their hands and said they wanted to get involved. “They all own their own bush cutters and small garden services in the rural areas. Remuneration will be made to them at the end of the month based on what funds are raised throughout the month by us,” says Van den Berg. She emphasises that it is vitally important for the public to become involved. “This they can do by paying a minimum fee of R50 per month per household. If a thousand households come on board, this will equate to R50 000, which could cover fuel costs and salaries.” The trio undertake to promote the small garden services of the crews working for them. “The crew we currently have on board will go with us as we move forward to the next project, which is Virginia's entrances. The main aim is to bring some positivity back into the communities by uplifting them. In order for this project, and future projects, to succeed, it is vital that the community be involved.” The public can follow the project’s progress on the Vista Facebook page to see what these dedicated women are accomplishing.

Scarcely a week into this massive project, hope is already evident as weeds and brush are removed to restore dignity and respect to the deceased laid to rest in the town’s cemetery and their families. The names behind the nonprofit organisation (NPO) Hands of Grace are Chantél van den Berg, Natasha Pottas and Kay Strauss. The trio can be considered the driving force of the initiative. These altruistic women have undertaken the task of cleaning Virginia’s cemetery, which has been neglected for many years. This daunting undertaking is not only taking many hours – so far in the first week of March – but is also costly considering the money going towards fuel for the bush cutters. The current conflict in the Middle East has led to a spike in crude oil prices, with speculation that diesel could rise to R40 per litre and petrol prices increase by R8 per litre. Nevertheless, this has not deterred the women, who have already cleaned one large block comprising eight smaller blocks. The full extent of the area to be cleaned will only be known once the cemetery register is located and consulted. Due to the area being so overgrown, it is difficult to determine the exact size that needs to be cleaned.

The police are investigating a murder case following a fatal shooting incident in Welkom that appears to have stemmed from a dispute over communal grazing rights. The police in Welkom were called to a murder scene in Rheederpark on Sunday 8 March, at approximately 09:00. At the scene, the officers discovered a 37-year-old man with three gunshot wounds – one sustained to the head and two to the right thigh. According to information gathered by police, the victim was walking through an open field with friends in the early hours of the morning when they were accosted by a group of men who opened fire, fatally wounding the deceased. The incident allegedly originated from an altercation that erupted earlier that evening at a liquor establishment, where two groups of herders had argued over communal pastures. The shooting highlights ongoing tensions over grazing rights in the area, where competition for suitable pastureland has led to disputes between different groups of livestock owners. No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are continuing. The police are appealing to the community for assistance in identifying and locating the suspects involved in the fatal shooting. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the alleged suspects is urged to come forward. Det. Lawyer caught in police trap An authorised entrapment operation has led to the arrest of a Ventersburg defense attorney on charges of obstructing the course of justice. The 54-year-old attorney was taken into custody on Thursday 12 February by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigations unit, together with the Provincial Tracking Team, and Provincial Technical Support Unit of Crime Intelligence. The officials carried out a duly authorised entrapment operation that led to the arrest of the defense attorney in Venterburg. The suspect is the attorney representing three accused persons who are implicated in over R2 million rands’ worth of stolen agricultural seed that were traced back to farms in the Bothaville, Viljoenskroon, and Ventersburg farming commu-

nities. “The investigation officer was supposed to receive monetary gratification in order to allow the accused persons to be released without the bail being opposed. “The team pounced on the suspect immediately after the anticipated handover of bribery money from the attorney to the investigation officer. “The accused persons represented by the suspect were supposed to appear in the Ventersburg Magistrate Court today on three burglary at business premises, and possession of suspected stolen property charges,” says Lt Col Thabo Covane, police spokesperson for the Free State. After the most recent arrest, a case docket of corruption and obstructing the course of justice was opened at the Ventersburg Police Station.

Police operation yields many arrests Police efforts to reduce crime and eradicate criminal elements across the Free State continue to yield significant results, with more than 1 210 individuals arrested during the past week's high-density, multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela II. All five districts in the province participated in the intelligence-led operation, ensuring a targeted approach to bringing offenders to book. The operation focused heavily on “stubborn” crimes, including contact and property-related offences. Under contact crimes, two suspects were arrested for murder, eight for attempted murder, and 118 for assault, whilst five suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms. Property-related crimes saw 37 suspects apprehended for malicious

Members of Welkom Platoon 01, Section 1, were conducting routine patrols near Flamingo in the early hours of the morning. During a crime prevention operation in the Kgotsong informal settlement, the Welkom Anti-Gang unit arrested two men in possession of a considerable consignment of drugs. On 29 January, officers arrested a 26-year-old man following a search of his residence, during which they discovered and seized 74 zip-lock plastic containers with suspected crystal methamphetamine weighing 74 grams; 168 sachets containing dagga; as well as one full Mandrax tablet, six halves and 52 quarters. The operation continued with the search of another identified target house, where officers seized 11 zip-lock containers with crystal methamphetamine weighing eight grams; along with cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales. A second suspect, aged 38, was arrested. Case dockets for the possession of and dealing in drugs were opened at the Bothaville Police Station. Both suspects have been detained in police custody, and the seized drugs have been logged into the evidence management system.

Elektrisiteitsvoorsiening is ’n belangrike munisipale diens wat menswaardigheid, ekonomiese deelname, gesondheidsorg en openbare veiligheid bevorder.

AfriForum gee die Nala-munisipaliteit tot 16 Maart 2026 geleentheid om op hul skrywe te reageer. OPERATION AN IMPEDIMENT TO CRIMINAL ACTS The Free State police continue to exert pressure on criminal elements through the multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II, resulting in the arrest of 1 709 suspects across the province. The operation, aimed at curbing trio crimes and aggravated robberies, highlights a signiﬁcant crackdown on violent crime, drug peddling, and environmental crimes. The operations led to 149 arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 113 for common assault, 44 for possession of danger-

ous weapons, 22 for robbery, 16 for attempted murder, and four for murder. In tackling sexual offences, the team worked with investigators to arrest 31 suspects for rape, whilst ﬁve were arrested under the Sexual Offences Act. Primary crime enablers were also targeted, with 41 arrests for drug dealing, 58 for drug possession, and 18 for selling liquor without a valid licence. They also arrested 38 drivers were arrested for driving under the inﬂuence.

Road crucial to economy The push for urgent repairs to the R59 between Vredefort and Viljoenskroon ahead of the Nampo Harvest Day event in May, will be intensified following concerns over the deteriorating condition of this vital arterial route. David van Vuuren, DA spokesperson for Economic Development in the Free State Legislature says they have written to Sanral seeking clarity on the transfer of the road’s custodianship and to the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, requesting urgent repairs to the R59. The department has stated that it has already requested Sanral to assume responsibility for the road, but Sanral is reportedly disputing this transfer. The DA's letter to Sanral seeks to confirm whether the request was indeed received and, if so, to establish a clear timeline for necessary repairs. Whilst the department has indicated that the handover and repairs will occur within the next three months, the DA remains sceptical about this timeframe. The urgent repairs to the R59 ahead of Nampo remains a priority. This route serves as a critical link between farming communities and local markets, transporting several tonnes of grain to silos daily during harvest season. Hoop van die week

True image shines through God designed us with a beautiful purpose – to bear the image of God. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them” (Gen 1:27, NIV). In his book Expressing His Image, Edgar Ellish creates a beautiful mental image: “Imagine a masterpiece painting, carefully crafted by the hand of a renowned artist. Every stroke is intentional, every detail placed with precision to reflect the artist’s heart and vision. “Now imagine that over time, layer upon layer of paint is added by unskilled hands – smudging the original colours, obscuring the true beauty beneath. The masterpiece still exists, but it is hidden under layers that were never meant to be there. “This is what happens when we lose sight of our God-given identity and allow the world to redefine us.” Undoubtedly, difficult times will come. There will be seasons of testing, but these experiences should draw us closer to Christ and bring forth His image in us. God is a loving Father who wants to: 1. Restore us to Himself: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” (Psalm 51:12, NIV) 2. Empower us to walk in the image and power of Christ: “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” (Phil 2:13, NLT) We were not created to reflect the image of a broken world that demands performance, perfection and self-preservation. Rather, we are called to reflect the character of a loving Creator who calls us to grace, truth and purpose. “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord - who is the Spirit - makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” (2 Cor 3:18, NLT) We will be what we behold. What we allow to speak into our lives will shape what we believe, our character and ultimately what our lives look like. Apply for Smart ID at bank The Department of Home Affairs has launched a digital partnership with banks that will allow people to apply for Smart ID cards directly at participating bank branches. The partnership entered its live operational phase on Sunday. Through this, South Africans can complete a secure Smart ID application at selected bank branches within five to ten minutes. The department said on Monday the system allows banks to connect directly to the department’s systems, enabling applications to be processed without completing paper forms or making prior bookings. The first participating institutions include Capitec Bank and Standard Bank, while First National Bank is in the final phase of testing. Other banks that joined the partnership are preparing to roll out the service. Initially, the service will allow South African citizens, qualifying naturalised citizens and permanent residents who still hold the green ID book to convert to the Smart ID card. Existing Smart ID holders will also be able to apply for re-issues. The department plans to expand services through the banking partnership. These are expected to include first-time Smart ID applications, passport services, courier delivery of documents and the ability to apply through banking apps. The Seniors in Action Sports Club was invited to a picnic organised by retired teachers (TARTA) at O’TIMES near Reitzpark on 25 February. Athletes show Fighters continue reﬁning their art their mettle A martial arts instructor and student of the RCFA Bhubezi Fight Club in Welkom recently attended the Ring Contact Fighting Arts South Africa (RCFA) Instructors’ and Officials’ Course held at Chazen from 27 February to 1 March. The national training course brought together instructors and officials from across South Africa to refine their knowledge, coaching standards, and officiating skills within the sport. The programme included sparring sessions, close combat theory and practical training, series and weapons work, as well as Kihapp. Sensei Joe Gladstone Ralejoe, head coach of the RCFA Bhubezi Fight Club, attended the full course as part of his continued development as an instructor and official within the organisation. Student Brandon Kelly, who is also part of the Presidential Team from the club, attended the Saturday sparring sessions. His participation formed part of the team’s ongoing

MARTI WILL Members of Harmony Striders participated in several prestigious races across the country during a busy weekend of competition on 7 and 8 March. The Surrender Hill Race in Fouriesburg on 7 March attracted a strong contingent from the club across multiple distances. In the 10km event, Gerald Sullivan, Mina Sullivan, Lientjie Blom, Rhian Rose, Linda de Jager, and Celeste le Roux represented the club. The half-marathon distance saw Johan Rheeder and Chantel Rheeder take on the challenging course, whilst the full marathon was contested by Lebohang Lala, Muso Molefi and Mavis Motaung. Simultaneously, Pieter Marais competed in the half-marathon at the Diamond Marathon in Kimberley, demonstrating the club’s widespread participation across the Free State and Northern Cape regions. Sunday’s action shifted to Gauteng, where Harmony Striders participated in the Edenvale races. Henry Sithebe tackled the full marathon distance of 42,2km, whilst Cyril Khumalo and Twane Anderson competed in the 16-kilometre event. The weekend’s sporting activities extended beyond running, with Eugene Delport and Jason Rothman representing the club in cycling at the prestigious 109km Argus Cape Town Cycle Tour on 8 March. Amelia du Plessis, one of the committee members of Harmony Striders regularly runs past this school and saw that there might be need for extra toys. In the words of the owner: “The Harmony Striders and Engen donated toys to our pre-school,

Club done proud Swimmers of the Welkom Aquatics club delivered excellent performances at the recent Level 0 and Level 1 swimming galas held on 27 and 28 February in Bloemfontein. At the Level 0 gala on the first day, three swimmers proudly represented the club. Kiane “Kiekie” Loots (10) finished first in the 50m freestyle and second in the 50m backstroke. Gabriela Agriao Oliviera (12) placed third in both the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke, while Tiago Agriao Oliviera (8) competed enthusiastically, gaining valuable race experience. The following day, the club competed in the Level 1 gala, where swimmers produced a string of outstanding results. Jano Bezuidenhout (15) achieved four first places and two second places, while Aiden Hewetson (8) secured two first-

place finishes. Tsotsang Hlanyane (13) earned two first-place finishes, one second place, and one third. One of the standout performances came from Bongani Hlongwane

(14), who dominated his events with eight first places and one second place. Nkotsana Maja (12) also impressed with five first places and five second places. Junior Mokonenyana (16) finished with three first places and two second places, while Khanyisa Mqeke (12) earned one first place, two second places and four third places. Joshua Mqeke (9) also participated. The team’s performances helped Welkom Aquatics finish second overall in the boys’ division, a proud achievement for the club. The club committee expressed their pride in the swimmers’ performances and dedication throughout the season. Their hard work and commitment in training are clearly reflected in the results. The club continues to focus on developing young swimmers, building confidence, discipline, and a love for the sport while proudly representing Welkom.

Skitter in laaste skoleseisoen Shyenne Laubschern van die Welkom Super Seals-swemklub is gekeur om op 20 Maart aan die Suid-Afrikaanse byeenkoms deel te neem. Dit is Shyenne se laaste seisoen van skoleswem. Tot dusver het sy 54 Top 3 plekke bereik vir haar swem- en tweekampseisoen. Sy het die seisoen al 16 galas geswem en een afdeling gewen. Vir tweekamp het sy twee keer die o.19-liga gewen; sy was tweede in die Gauteng-Noord-interprovinsiaal-byeenkoms en eerste in Noord-Vrystaat-interprovinsiaal.
