Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit sukkel al geruime tyd met riooloorstromings, wat die Vrystaatse Departement van Water en Sanitasie (DWS) genoop het om in te gryp – ná ’n ministeriële opdrag om die munisipaliteit by te staan. Die (DWS) het saam met die munisipaliteit gewerk om die Thabong- en Kutlwanong-afvalwaterbehandelingsaanlegte en pompstasies op te knap, ten einde die voortdurende probleem van riooloorstromings aan te spreek. Die omvang van werk het pompstasieopknapping, die hantering van verstoppings in rioolafvoerstelsels en die opknapping van die afvalwaterbehandelingsaanlegte ingesluit. Nege aanlegte en 42 niewerkende rioolpompstasies is opgeknap, terwyl verstoppings in rioolnetwerkpypleidings, wat bestaan uit ongeveer 400km uitlooplyne en kamers met ’n algehele afstand van 1 543km, opgelos is. Die werk aan altwee aanlegte, vir Thabong en Kutlwanong, nader voltooiing, met albei projekte wat vordering bo 98% bereik het. Altesaam 19 pompstasies, insluitende dié van Bronville-Noord, Bronville-Suid, Rheederspark en Akasia, is voltooi en aan die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit oorhandig om te bedryf. Hoewel die projekte byna voltooi is, bly daar egter ’n beduidende probleem met

Die probleme word veroorsaak deur vandalisme van elektrisiteitsinfrastruktuur in Matjhabeng, asook vertragings in betaling deur die munisipaliteit aan Eskom. Die munisipaliteit is in konsultasie met Eskom en sal na verwating ’n ooreenkoms bereik wat sal meebring dat die Matjhabeng-gemeenskap baat vind by die opgeknapte infrastruktuur. Die twee aanlegte is toegerus met kragopwekkers; die vertraging in elektriese aansluiting kan egter nadelige vertragings veroorsaak om die aanlegte ten volle operasioneel te kry. Om Thabong se aanleg op kragopwekkers alleen te laat werk, sal na raming die munisipaliteit R2 miljoen per maand kos. Die munisipaliteit het die komitee verseker dat bevoegde aanlegoperateurs aangestel sal word om die fasiliteite te bedryf en sekuriteit is verhoog om vandalisme te voorkom, veral tydens die kontrakteurs se reses. Met die kontrakteurs se reses geskeduleer vir 15 Desember, het alle belanghebbendes onvermoeid gewerk om te verseker dat projekte praktiese voltooiing bereik. Hierdie groot infrastruktuur-belegging verteenwoordig ’n beslissende stap om Matjhabeng se langstaande rioolkrisis op te los, hoewel die elektrisiteitsaansluitingsuitdagings dreig om die volle voordele wat inwoners kan bereik te vertraag.

Women set up to fail; Lejweleputswa needs competence, not quotas Simon Mkhize, Lejweleputswa:
In recent years, the African National Congress (ANC) has repeatedly emphasised the need for gender parity in leadership, often pushing for women to occupy mayoral positions across municipalities. While the intention behind this policy is noble and necessary for a truly inclusive democracy, its application has too often been careless, short-sighted, and ultimately counterproductive – especially in municipalities already struggling to survive Nowhere is this clearer than in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, a district already crippled by years of mismanagement, dwindling revenue, financial instability, and deteriorating infrastructure. This is not a municipality that can afford symbolism over substance. It requires capable, experienced,
and credible leadership – regardless of gender. Yet the ANC’s deployment strategy tends to prioritise meeting gender targets over ensuring that the person appointed has the skill, experience, and readiness to govern a municipality in crisis. In doing so, the party is not empowering women; it is setting them up to fail. No one disputes the importance of women in leadership. South Africa needs more women in government, corporate leadership,and civil society. But, representation can not be meaningful when it is divorced from capacity-building. Too often, female leaders are deployed into dysfunctional municipalities with collapsing finances, hollowed-out administrations, and crumbling infrastructure – without the political support, resources or
technical teams needed to succeed. This is not gender empowerment. This is political carelessness disguised as equality. Lejweleputswa needs proven competence, not tokenism – the district's problems are deep and urgent. Water shortages, decaying infrastructure, unpaid employees, weak revenue collection, and collapsing local economies require a mayor with demonstrable management experience, financial literacy and the courage to confront entrenched political interests. This is not a training ground. It is irresponsible to deploy an inexperienced or untested mayor – man or woman – into a municipality on the brink of collapse simply to tick a box. Doing so delays recovery, prolongs suffering, and worsens community distrust.
The ANC must stop treating mayoral positions as deployment opportunities and start treating them as critical leadership posts that determine whether communities live with dignity or continue sinking deeper into neglect. There are many capable women who could lead Lejweleputswa brilliantly. But they should be chosen on merit, not merely because a quota demands a woman at the helm. If gender parity becomes an excuse to overlook credibility, skills, and readiness, then the policy is hollow and harmful. The people of Lejweleputswa deserve a credible leader who can restore stability, rebuild institutions, and speed up service delivery. Whether that person is a woman or a man should matter far less than whether they are capable of turning around a sinking municipality.

Kersfees is gewoonlik ’n vrolike en rustige tyd, maar dit is nie waar vir almal nie. Die gebeure rondom die geboorte van Jesus was ’n onseker tyd. Niks het uitgewerk soos Josef en Maria dit beplan het nie. Hulle het onverwags swanger geword en toe moes hulle Bethlehem toe gaan om geregistreer te word. Tydens die reis is Jesus gebore, maar hulle kon nie blyplek kry nie en moes met ’n pasgebore kindjie in ’n stal bly. Kort ná die geboorte moes hulle vlug omdat die koning die kindjie wou doodmaak. Ons lewe werk dikwels so. Daar het in jou lewe ook al goed gebeur wat jy nie verwag het nie: siekte, werkverlies, huweliks- of verhoudingsprobleme; of dalk is daar vanjaar ’n leë stoel aan jou Kersfeestafel. Ons begeerte om te beheer, kom uit ’n gebrek aan vertroue en geloof. In Matteus 18:3-4 sê die Here ons moet soos kindertjies wees wat nie wil beheer nie. Kindertjies leef sorgvry en geniet die lewe, omdat iemand anders sorg. Psalm 37:5 moedig ons aan om die Here te vertrou en ons lewe aan die Here oor te gee; dan sal Hy sorg. Korintiërs 2:9-10 sê God het besluit en God het gedoen wat geen mens kon bedink of doen nie. Die oplossing, of verlossing, wat God met Kersfees gebring het, is so vreemd dat mense dit vandag nog nie verstaan nie. Net God kon die mensdom op so ’n manier verlos en vrykoop. As God dit kon doen sonder jou, waarom vertrou jy Hom nie ook met die res van jou lewe nie? Wat laat jou dink jy kan beter planne maak as God? Wat laat jou dink jy kan jouself op ’n beter manier red? Met Kersfees sê die Here vir ons: Ons hoef nie in beheer te wees nie. Ons hoef nie te probeer beheer wat ander mense van ons dink nie. Ons hoef nie die toekoms te probeer beheer nie. Ons hoef nie ons huweliksmaat of ons kinders of ons werksituasie en probleme self te beheer nie. Volgens 1 Petrus 5:7, gee liewer al julle bekommernisse aan God oor, want Hy gee vir julle om en Hy sal sorg. Father to be imprisoned for life The Odendaalsrus Regional Court has sentenced a 55-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his biological daughter. The sentencing stems from an incident reported on Thursday 25 August 2022, in Allanridge. The court heard how the victim was sexually violated by her father during the period from January 2022 until August 2022. The victim, who was aged 17 at the time, relocated to stay with her father in January 2022. Two days after her arrival at her father’s house, the victim slept in
the lounge whilst her father slept in the bedroom. This arrangement changed after the father told the victim that they could share the bed. The court heard how the father undressed and raped the victim on several occasions. The sexual abuse continued weekly from January until the information was leaked and the matter was reported to police in August 2022. A case of rape was registered and the victim’s father was arrested and remanded in custody after being denied bail. The case was assigned to Const. Malearongwa Mokoena of the Welkom Family

LAW ENFORCERS THWART CRIMES Two suspects have been arrested for possession of drugs with a street value of R20 000. The men, aged 30 and 36 years, were arrested on Friday 12 December during a roadblock in Maokeng. The arrest happened at about 08:00 when members of the SAPS, in partnership with the traffic department, Community Policing Forum (CPF), and the youth desk, conducted a roadblock at Marabastad section, Maokeng. While searching a taxi, the members noticed a man acting suspiciously. They found a hidden

Magistrate Mzana sentenced the 55-year-old father to life imprisonment on Friday 5 December. This case highlights the importance of reporting sexual abuse and demonstrates that the justice system will hold perpetrators accountable, regardless of their relationship to the victim. The life sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victim.

Whether you are a seasoned marathon runner aiming to secure a Comrades Marathon qualifying time, or a social runner simply looking to enjoy a fun and active day out, the Mimosa Mall Marathon offers a race for everyone. Distances include the full marathon, half marathon, 10km, and the ever-popular 5km fun run, making it an inclusive event for serious athletes, families, and first-time runners alike. A highlight of the event is its unique and fast route, which starts and finishes at Mimosa Mall and takes runners through some of Bloemfontein’s most iconic landmarks. Participants will run through the Tempe Military Base, the University of the Free State (UFS), and Grey College, offering a scenic and memorable race experience supported by enthusiastic spectators along the way. The marathon remains an official Comrades Marathon qualifier, giving long-distance runners the opportunity to test their endurance and secure a qualifying time early in the season. 'n Jong ontluikende hokkiespeler van Welkom, Rihane Liebenberg (17), het onlangs teruggekeer ná 'n suksesvolle toernooi in Italië. Liebenberg, ’n gr.11-leerder aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool, is gekies vir die SS Rhino-hokkiespan wat van 30 November tot 9 Desember getoer het. Sy is tydens een van die wedstryde in Italië gekies as speler van die wedstryd. Haar hokkie-loopbaan het reeds in gr. 1 begin toe sy ’n leerder by Primêre Skool Naudeville was. In gr. 5 is sy gekeur om vir die skool se eerste hokkiespan te speel, en sy word vir die Lejweleputswa-span gekies. In 2022, in gr.8, is sy weer vir Lejweleputswa-hokkie gekies. Sy is verder bevorder en is vir die Noord-Vrystaatse span
The RCFA Bhubezi Fight Club is proud to celebrate a major milestone following the recent National Black Grading event held in Parys during the weekend of 5 and 6 December. “The club had multiple students who were selected for the RCFA Presidential Team - a powerful achievement for both the dojo and the Free State martial arts community,” says Sensei Joe Gladstone Ralejoe. Sensei Joe, head instructor of the RCFA Bhubezi Fight Club, was honoured with selection to the Presidential Team of Officials for the upcoming 2026 World Championships. Additionally, during the RCFA annual general meeting, he was appointed the provincial head for RCFA Free State. The successful grading results are as follows: ■ Brandon Kelly (1st Yellow Belt). ■ Gofaone Sebati (1st Yellow Belt). ■ Keagan Smith (1st Green Belt). ■ Sensei Joe Gladstone Ralejoe (3rd Degree Black Belt). “These achievements mark a significant boost for Free State martial arts development. With several advanced students now excelling nationally, the club is ready to welcome a new generation of beginners and grow the sport even further within the province,” Sensei Joe explained.

gekies. Ook in 2022 is Rihane vir die Elsie Coetzer Hockey School (ECHS) se span gekies en hulle toer na Nederland. In 2023 het sy die eerste keer vir die Goudveld-Hoërskool se eerstespan gespeel. In 2024 het sy weer Noord-Vrystaat-keuring behaal en is sy weer vir die skool se eerste span gekies.
Rihane is weer in 2025 vir die Lejweleputswa-hokkiespan gekies, en keuring vir die Noord-Vrystaatspan volg. Dit was op Noord-Vrystaat-vlak dat sy raakgesien is en gekeur is om na Italië te gaan. Sy sal graag eendag ’n kontrak in Italië kry om vir hulle hokkie te speel.
Flexing his muscle the world over Welkom bodybuilder Frans Hloi, has again beaten the best of the best in the world of body building. On 6 December during the Muscle Mulisha at the Silver Stars Casino in Krugersdorp, Hloi came first in the U70 kg and the Masters division. Preceding this, on 29 November, he came first in the same categories during the Summer Bodies event at the same casino.
