Sinkhole and sewage crisis puts residents at risk

Residents in Bedelia are calling for urgent action over a long-running sinkhole and sewage problem at the corner of Hermina and Romeo Street. The sinkhole, located on property used by a religious congregation, has reportedly been present for between three and four years. According to the DA, the problem has been reported to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality on several occasions. The condition of the property has reportedly become so dangerous that the congregation has had to relocate. The surrounding area is also affected by an ongoing sewage problem. Raw sewage is reportedly being pumped into the veld between 1 and 21 Romeo Street on a daily basis. There are also concerns that damaged or collapsed stormwater infrastructure could be contributing to blockages and failures in the sewer network.
The sinkhole situation has raised concerns about the safety of residents, nearby properties, members of the congregation and the environment.

DA ward 33 candidate Claudia Doig has conducted several visits to the site to document the problems and raise them with municipal officials. The site was inspected on Tuesday 25 August, when drone footage was obtained to document the affected area. A further visit took place on Monday 7 September, accompanied by DA member of parliament (MP) George Michalakis. On Friday 11 September, Doig returned to the site with the municipal Speaker and officials from the municipality’s engineering and infrastructure departments. Despite these engagements, residents are reportedly still waiting for a permanent solution. Cllr. René Steyn, DA councillor for the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, says the municipality now needs to establish the cause of the sinkhole and sewage failures, secure the area, address the infrastructure problems, and provide residents with a clear timeline for the work. The party has called on the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to: ■ immediately secure the affected area; ■ conduct a comprehensive technical assessment of the sinkhole and surrounding infrastructure; ■ stop the discharge of raw sewage into the veld; ■ repair the affected stormwater and sewer infrastructure; ■ rehabilitate the contaminated area; and ■ provide residents with a written repair plan and clear completion dates. The matter highlights the ongoing impact of failing municipal infrastructure and services on communities, with residents in the affected area facing the consequences of a problem that has reportedly persisted for several years. The DA says it will continue monitoring the site and engaging the relevant municipal departments until the infrastructure is repaired and the area is made safe for the public.

Reports of WhatsApp messages, audio recordings and telephone conversations allegedly pointing to interference, bias and possible corruption in disciplinary processes raise serious concerns. Among the most troubling claims is an alleged recording in which a commissioner purportedly discusses payments allegedly received from a municipal manager in connection with a disciplinary matter. Jan Gysbert Maritz (57) was arrested on 9 October 2025 on charges relating to fraud, theft, money laundering and contraventions of the Legal Practice Act. The case was to have been heard in the Commercial Crime Court in Welkom on Monday 21 September and Tuesday. The case could, however, not proceed as the prosecutor checked in ill and the second floor of the Welkom Court building flooded due to a burst pipe. The case has now been postponed to 10 and 11 February 2027 for trial. According to a statement from the Directorate for Priority Crimes (Hawks) issued in 2025, the charges stem from a deceased’s estate concerning a tender awarded to a security company by the Matjhabeng Municipality worth millions of rands. The municipality had an outstanding amount exceeding R21 million after services had been rendered. The security company challenged this debt in the Free State High Court, securing judgement in its favour, plus 7% interest since 17 November 2020. The amount of over R21 million allegedly included R15 million from a settlement agreement, which was purportedly paid into a FNB account provided by Maritz. Investigations revealed that the FNB account belonged to a different company, of which Maritz was the sole director. In 2025, Maritz was found guilty of sexual offences against five minor children and sentenced to three life sentences and 61 years. The stepfather from Dagbreek in Welkom was sentenced on 16 counts following a lengthy court process after being found guilty on all charges initially laid in 2019. The late Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, Free State provincial corporate communication and media liaison, at the time told Vista that the case had been reported to the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit on 25 March 2019. The successful prosecution was handled by Adv. Amanda Bester of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), working with Capt. Fanie van der Merwe. The sentences imposed were: ■ Life imprisonment for rape (three counts). ■ Indecent assault: five years’ imprisonment. ■ Sexual grooming: eight years’ imprisonment (two counts). ■ Exposure of pornography to a child: five years’ imprisonment (two counts). ■ Sexual exploitation of a child: five years’ imprisonment. ■ Production of child pornography: five years’ imprisonment. ■ Sexual assault: three years’ imprisonment (five counts). ■ Compelled sexual assault: five years’ imprisonment. The provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane, said the heinous nature of the crimes, committed over years by someone in a position of trust and authority, demanded a firm response.

ALLEGED LOVER KILLED A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of a 40-year-old foreign national in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, on 13 September. Police were summoned to a stabbing incident in K9, Kutlwanong, at approximately 01:30. On arrival, officers were directed to a man lying motionless on the ground. He had sustained multiple stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene. According to police, an argument allegedly broke out between the suspect and the victim during a house party. The suspect reportedly accused the victim of having an affair with his wife. The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim several times before fleeing the scene. Police traced the suspect to his home, where he was arrested shortly after the incident. The 44-year-old is expected to appear before the Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court soon on a charge of murder.

All urged to question water charges The Matjhabeng Community Forum calls for tariff reversals, corrected municipal accounts and formal disputes over incorrect charges. It has welcomed the Free State High Court’s decision to suspend the municipality’s 25% water tariff increase pending the final determination of the Forum’s review application. The interim ruling follows concerns raised over the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP), budget and tariff-setting processes. The Forum says these concerns were repeatedly brought to the attention of the Matjhabeng Council, with DA councillors raising questions about alleged irregularities before the matter was taken to court. The Forum said the case demonstrated the importance of elected representatives, residents, businesses and community organisations using the available platforms to hold the municipality accountable. “This is what Matjhabeng needs: elected representatives, residents, businesses and community organisations each using the platforms available to them to hold the municipality accountable,” the Forum said. The organisation said the tariff dispute must be viewed against the broader difficulties experienced by municipal account holders. Residents, it said, continue to face incorrect and estimated water accounts, unresolved billing disputes, accumulating interest and, in some cases, the threat of disconnection while disputes remain unresolved.

Although the court has suspended the increase, the legal proceedings are not yet concluded. The Forum said it would now pursue Part B of its application and seek final relief. In the meantime, it intends to press for suspended tariff increases that have already been billed to consumers to be written back, with affected accounts corrected. The Forum shared that it will also seek the reversal of the water flat rate in cases where the municipality cannot demonstrate that it was lawfully imposed. To assist affected residents, the Forum has prepared a municipal account dispute form, which has been published with its statement. Residents experiencing incorrect water charges, estimated readings, disputed interest or unresolved account corrections are encouraged to complete and submit the form to
formally record their objections. The Forum urged residents to retain proof that their forms had been submitted. “Residents need practical assistance now,” it said. The Forum has also called on business owners to review their municipal accounts and formally dispute any charges they believe are affected by the suspended tariff increase or other unlawful billing. It referred businesses to Section 102(2) of the Municipal Systems Act, which it says provides protection against credit-control measures or disconnection where a formal billing dispute is pending. The Forum is encouraging businesses to participate in a consolidated Section 102 dispute process linked to the High Court proceedings. According to the Forum, the process is intended to require the municipality to reverse the 25% increase on affected business accounts and to protect businesses against disconnection while the review application is being considered. The Forum described the court’s decision as significant for Welkom’s business community. It also stressed, however, that its practical effect would ultimately depend on residents and businesses with the conviction of taking steps to enforce their rights and ensure that the municipality complies with the ruling. The Forum called on business owners to review their latest municipal bills, identify any disputed increases or unapproved basic water charges,
and submit the prescribed dispute template to the municipal manager, with reference to the High Court order. The Forum said a united response was necessary to ensure that the ruling was implemented and that businesses were not exposed to what it described as retaliatory disconnections. The Business Forum has attorneys on standby to assist if Council decides to implement the credit control policy. A pre-populated dispute form has been prepared, with most sections already completed. Local Miss South Africa Heritage 2026 finalist Princess Mnqotho is turning her platform into a campaign for menstrual dignity, educational access and youth empowerment across Matjhabeng. For many schoolgirls, Princess Mnqotho, a Miss the monthly challenge South Africa Heritage of menstruation extends finalist. PHOTO: Supplied far beyond the physical discomfort. Without access to sanitary products, appropriate facilities and reliable menstrual health information, this natural biological process can become a barrier to education. Seeking to address this challenge, Mnqotho is spearheading a campaign aimed at combating period poverty and restoring dignity to young girls across the area of the Matjhabeng Municipality. Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene education and suitable sanitation and waste management facilities. Its consequences can include missed school days, reduced participation in classroom activities and increased pressure on families already facing financial difficulties. Mnqotho has taken her campaign directly into local communities through collection drives, educational workshops and sanitary pad distributions at schools, including Kgotsong Primary School, Itumeleng Mabele Primary School, Marobe Primary School and Seqhobong High School. Her outreach combines the distribution of sanitary products with interactive discussions on menstrual health, personal hygiene, dignity and self-worth. The initiatives have also received support from local Community Policing Forums (CPFs), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipal stakeholders. “No girl should ever have to choose between her dignity and her education. Period poverty is not just a women’s issue – it is a community issue that affects our future leaders. “Through my Miss South Africa Heritage journey, my promise is to ensure that no girl in Matjhabeng misses school because of a natural biological process,” Mnqotho said. While donation drives provide immediate relief, Mnqotho says the long-term goal is to establish sustainable support structures that can continue assisting girls beyond individual campaigns. Through partnerships with local businesses, civic organisations and community leaders, she aims to develop regular sanitary product distribution channels and educational forums at schools in Odendaalsrus and the wider Matjhabeng region. The initiative seeks not only to provide essential supplies, but also to encourage open, informed conversations about menstrual health and challenge the stigma that can leave young girls feeling embarrassed or isolated. As a youth mentor and community advocate, Mnqotho is using her heritage pageant journey to promote practical change at grassroots level. Her platform places youth empowerment, menstrual health equity and community leadership at the centre of her campaign. For Mnqotho, the message is clear: ensuring that girls can attend school with confidence and dignity is not merely an act of charity, but an investment in the future of the community.

CHESS STARS CLAIM THREE PROVINCIAL TITLES More than 200 chess players gathered in Bloemfontein on 5 September for the Free State Top Schools Provincial finals. Schools from Lejweleputswa and Mangaung Metro competing from U10 to U20. Lejweleputswa was represented by learners from Loskuil PS, Trio PS, Naudeville Primary, Welkom Volkskool, Goudveld-Hoërskool, Welkom-Gimnasium, St Andrews School (Welkom) and the Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Academy. The district secured three provincial victories. Lejweleputswa Legends won the U12 girls and U12 mixed divisions, while St Andrews claimed the U18 boys’ title. Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Academy placed two additional teams in the top three. The U12 boys finished second, while the U10 girls took third place. Setshabelo athletes sprint to glory Setshabelo Public School’s athletics team secured a remarkable result, with 14 of its 16 young athletes qualifying for the upcoming FS Provincial Championships. The school, based on the outskirts of Thabong, has been praised for hard work and resilience after a dominant performance at the district trials held recently in Bultfontein. The 14 athletes, aged between 9 and 13, will now represent the school at the provincial level in September, competing against top schools from across the province in track and field events. The achievement has been credited to the dedication of the school’s coaching team, from left, back: Puleng Nyelele, Victor Makhebesela, Selapane Soke and Steven Mokoena.

Time trials Harmony Striders runners turned out in numbers for the Rand Water Vaal River City Marathon in Vanderbijlpark on 13 September, competing across the 42.2 km and 21.1 km distances. In the marathon, Thompho Muthelo, Andre van Niekerk, Clayton Anderson and Morne Nel represented Harmony Striders over the demanding 42.2 km route. The club was also represented in the half marathon by Twane Anderson, George Semoeng and Ntombizodwa Danisa. The Vaal River City Marathon formed part of a busy period for the club, with runners also preparing through regular time trials designed to test their fitness and build towards longer-distance races. At the club’s time trials on 9 September, runners competed over 8 km and 4 km distances, producing a wide range of performances.

Bykans 200 spelers van oor Suid-Afrika heen sal oor vier dae van intense kompetisie aan die toernooi deelneem. Welkom- en Rovers-rolbalklub sal as speelterreine dien, met Welkom-klub as hoofkwartier. Die toernooi werk volgens ’n stelsel waar elke streek een tot vier spanne het. Elke span bestaan uit vier spelers, wat uit
mans en/of vroue kan bestaan. Dit maak rolbal die enigste sport wat gelyk tussen mans en vroue gespeel kan word. Noord-Vrystaat het die afgelope twee jaar reeds tweede in die land gekom met die o.25-spanne en het uitstekende spelers. Van hierdie spelers neem ook aan die o.35-kampioenskappe deel. Een van die spelers in die Noord-Vrystaat A-span is Andrian Bookless, die nommer een speler in Suid-Afrika onder 30. Hy is uitgenooi na die Hong Kong Internasionale

Nasionale kampioenskap aangepak MARTI WILL ’n Groep van 17 jong ruiters van BRS Riding School neem deel aan die Sanesa- nasionale kampioenskapsbyeenkoms wat van Donderdag 24 September tot Maandag by Kyalami Park in Johannesburg plaasvind. Die ruiters het deur hul deelname en prestasies gedurende die Sanesa-seisoen hul plek in die Vrystaat-span verdien. Hulle sal in ’n verskeidenheid dissiplines deelneem, waaronder skouspring, dressuur, Prix Caprilli, equitation, Working Hunter, Working Riding en Performance Riding. Die 17 BRS-ruiters wat die Vrystaat gaan verteenwoordig, is: Zonika van den Berg, Janke Rossouw, Kara Taute, Ivanka Erasmus, Hanno van Jaarsveld, Ava Adendorff, Kelsey Smith, Mike Calitz, Phoebe Kilian, Beaule Jordaan, Ethan Erasmus, Miah Erasmus, Bekker Taute, Lizay Jonker, Atile Mohlatsane, Hlompo Mohlatsane
en Desmond MacCaskill. Die span word afgerig deur Belinda Basson, met Shaylene Basson as assistent-afrigter. Die inlywingsdag op 12 September by BRS buite Riebeckstad was die begin van hierdie besondere avontuur as ’n span. Die ruiters wat gekies is, het aan verskeie uitdagende spanaktiwiteite deelgeneem om mekaar beter te leer ken en om samehorigheid te bou voordat hulle die Vrystaat op nasionale vlak gaan verteenwoordig. Vir hierdie jong ruiters is deelname aan die nasionale kampioenskap die hoogtepunt van ’n seisoen van harde werk, oefening, toewyding en baie ure saam met hul perde. Perdry verg nie net tegniese vaardigheid nie, maar ook dissipline, geduld, deursettingsvermoë en ’n sterk vertrouensband tussen ruiter en perd. Nou wag die groot verhoog by Kyalami Park, waar die ruiters hul vaardighede teen ruiters van oor die land heen gaan meet.
