TheDAhas rejected proposed tariff increasesfor the2026-’27 budget in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, which exceed national guidelines by significant margins

TheANC-ledmunicipalityhas proposed electricitytariff increasesof23% against the National Energy RegulatorofSouth Africa (Nersa)guideline of 9,01%, andwater tariff increasesof25% against the Vaal Central Water(VCW) increase of 9,5%

Property rates, refuseremovaland seweragetariffswould each increase by 7%

Theincreasesare setagainstaconsumer price index of 3,4%,municipal unemploymentof36,7% affectingover150 000 adults, and negativeeconomic growth of-1,45% in the area

Themunicipality’spoverty rate exceeds 60%.

TheDAmayoral candidatefor Matjhabeng, Cllr Piet Botha, said the proposed increaseswould place additional financial pressure on households and businessesalready experiencingeconomic difficulty.

“Residents cannot be expectedtosubsidiseinefficiency, neglect andadministrativefailure,”Bothasaid.

TheDA hasraised concerns aboutthe methodology used to justify theelectricity increase, notingthat the Cost of Supply Studywas conducted in 10 of the municipality’s 36 wards.

Themunicipalityisexperiencing waterlossesofapproximately56% through leaksand infrastructuredeterioration, translatingtoanestimated R360 million annually.

TheDA argues that residents should not bear the costofthese lossesthrough increased tariffs.

During council deliberations,the Matjhabeng BusinessForum warnedof potentialwidespreadresistance to the increases, includingnon-payment.
