Swift action thwarts land grab

Shacks cleared in crackdown MARTI WILL

Swift and decisive action by local leadership and authorities has successfully prevented an illegal land occupation in Rheederspark, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated community response and law enforcement intervention. The illegal development was halted within hours of the first informal structure being erected, following immediate reports from concerned residents. Cllr Werner Janse van Rensburg of ward 34 says that when authorities arrived on Friday, 16 January, ten shacks had already been constructed. “They were purposefully spaced approximately 800m apart, extending from the front of the combined school in Rheederspark down to the railway line, and then to the timber company,” he said. The structures formed a strategic pattern across public land, suggesting a coordinated occupation attempt. Janse van Rensburg emphasised that residents’ immediate reporting enabled authorities to respond before the situation escalated. Upon receiving reports of unauthorised land occupation, he immediately contacted relevant authorities. “From information I received, I identified that illegal foreign nationals were erecting informal structures in the area. “Through prompt coordination with municipal officials, law enforcement, and Bylaw Enforcement, the situation was swiftly addressed. The illegal structures were removed by Bylaw Enforcement before any permanent occupation could

take place,” Janse van Rensburg confirmed. Those found on site were informed that illegal land occupation would not be tolerated and that all land and housing

matters must follow lawful processes. Janse van Rensburg assured residents that investigations into the incident, including the legal status of the individuals involved, were being handled by relevant authorities. “Continuous monitoring of the area will remain in place, and decisive action will be taken against any future attempts to unlawfully occupy land.” He urged communities to stay vigilant. “Be aware of your surroundings and any activity taking place there. Land grabs must be reported within 24 hours of the first shack being observed. Residents must take a stand and protect their own environment by acting swiftly.” The successful intervention underscores the importance of community-authority cooperation in maintaining lawful land use and preventing unauthorised settlements.
