Growth mindset needed to gain success MARTI WILL

What began as a dream and humble beginnings at local flea markets has grown into an inspiring entrepreneurial journey for Dr Rito Grace Madingana, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Earthly by Rito and Co. Madingana attributes her journey first and foremost to God, whose grace, wisdom and guidance she credits for every opportunity and milestone. Her passion for beauty was strength-

ened when she was afforded the opportunity to study Cosmetic Science at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Durban, where she gained practical experience in formulation, product development and quality assurance. Together with her mother, Nthabiseng Motaung, a scientist and co-founder of Earthly by Rito and Co., she has combined knowledge and passion to develop natural skincare products from scratch. The brand sources many natural resources from local farmers, with a strong focus on understanding what

goes into every product. Earthly by Rito and Co. advocates for natural beauty and encourages consumers to make more conscious skincare choices while moving away from unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals. The company recently reached a significant milestone when it was afforded the opportunity to exhibit at the International Professional Beauty and Salon Expo at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg on 6 and 7 September. The expo allowed the proudly South African brand to connect with people from America, India, China, Zimbabwe

and Europe, while recording strong sales and gaining valuable international exposure. Her journey -from selling products at flea markets to exhibiting before an international audience - is a testament to perseverance. Madingana's message to young people and women is simple: “Never allow fear to silence the vision God has placed in your heart. “Start where you are, use what you have, keep learning, remain resilient and trust God’s perfect timing. Every successful business begins with one courageous step.”

Road to success paved with passion What began as a journey in education as an education assistant has culminated in a major achievement for Tshepang Montso of the Seabo Primary School, who has emerged as the provincial winner in the category for excellence in teaching Natural Sciences at the National Teaching Awards. Montso was recognised for her outstanding contribution to teaching and learning at an awards ceremony held at the Imvelo Safari Lodge in Bloemfontein on 28 August. Her achievement marks a proud moment for Seabo, Circuit 1, the Lejweleputswa Education District and the Free State. However, her achievement is about more than a single award. It reflects a remarkable

professional journey and years of commitment to developing young minds. Montso joined the education sector in 2021 as an education assistant at Seabo. Her dedication, commitment and passion for teaching soon became evident, earning the recognition and support of the school’s

headmaster, Klaas Moopeloa. Recognising her potential and the qualities needed to become an exceptional educator, Moopeloa encouraged and supported her professional growth. In 2022, Montso was appointed as a permanent teacher at the school. Her passion for Natural Sciences has extended beyond the classroom. Centre aims to empower

MARTI WILL D3 Energy South Africa has opened an information technology (IT) training centre in Virginia, providing a dedicated community space where residents can develop practical digital skills. The centre was officially opened on 4 September and is intended to help people become more confident in using technology through practical, hands-on learning. The facility is located in a municipality where communities face significant economic and skills challenges. According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the Free State recorded an unemployment rate of 37.3% in the second quarter of 2026. While the centre cannot solve unemployment on its own, D3 Energy says access to relevant digital skills can help people prepare for and pursue opportunities in education, employment and business. The facility is open to the wider community, including school learners, job seekers, adults, entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Training is expected to focus on practical skills such as preparing CVs, creating documents, using spreadsheets, sending formal emails and managing electronic files. These skills are increasingly important as job applications, school assignments and business activities move online. Many people are familiar with using WhatsApp, social media and the internet on mobile phones, but may have limited experience

using computers for more formal or professional tasks. D3 Energy South Africa is the local subsidiary of ASX-listed D3 Energy Limited, a natural gas and helium company with exploration interests in the Free State. Virginia is also home to the company’s South African operational base. The company says its presence in the region should extend beyond exploration to include practical contributions to surrounding communities. Daphne Mentor, country manager of D3 Energy South Africa, said the centre formed part of the company’s investment in local potential. “Our investment in the Free State is not only about what lies beneath the ground. It is also about investing in the potential of the people and communities around us,” Mentor said.“The

IT training centre is a practical way for us to create access to skills that people can use in education, employment, business and everyday life.” D3 Energy acknowledged that the centre cannot guarantee employment or address every skills challenge facing the community. However, it provides a place where participants can learn, build confidence and acquire practical skills that may help them identify and pursue future opportunities. The company intends to monitor how the centre is used and work with local stakeholders to ensure its programmes respond to community needs. For now, the focus is on making the Virginia IT training centre an accessible and valuable resource for the surrounding community.

For the organisers of the Mr and Miss Face of Matjhabeng contest, beauty and pageantry are only part of a much bigger vision: nurturing young people who are confident, compassionate and committed to making a difference in their communities. In partnership with the Rehoboth Reconcile Ignites Foundation, the pageant aims to mould, groom and empower young people into purpose-driven leaders who understand that true leadership is rooted in serving others. This commitment was reflected on 12 September, when the 2026 finalists visited the SPCA Animal Shelter in Virginia as part of the initiative’s community outreach programme. The finalists donated food for the animals and spent time learning about animal welfare, responsibility, kindness, and compassion. For the organiser, Dr Rito Madingana, the experience was a meaningful reminder that leadership begins with empathy. “Watching our young people engage, ask questions and learn was such a beautiful experience,” she said. The visit forms part of a broader mission to create opportunities to develop confidence, self-awareness, leadership skills and a spirit of service, while using platforms to make a positive contribution to society. The finalists’ community involvement will continue over the next two months in the lead-up to the Grand Pageant on Tuesday 1 December. Planned outreach activities include visits to an old-age home and a children’s centre, allowing the young

participants to connect with different members of the community and learn about the importance of compassion, dignity and service. “We believe our finalists should not only prepare for a crown, but also learn what it truly means to serve, inspire and leave a lasting legacy,” Madingana said. Through these activities, Mr and Miss Face of Matjhabeng hopes to establish a platform where young people are encouraged to recognise their potential and use it constructively. The pageant’s message is clear: a crown may symbolise achievement, but character, purpose and service are what give leadership lasting value. Tickets to the pageant are available from the finalists. In ons kindskap weet ons ons het ’n Vaderhuis. In die nuwe Testament skryf Jesus self en gebruik Hy ook die beeld om te sê: Johannes 10: 11 – “Ek is die goeie Herder”. Dan versterk Jesus ons geloof deur te sê: 1. Die goeie Herder ken sy skape op die naam. 2. Hy stap voor hulle uit, ons volg Hom. 3. Die goeie Herder lê sy lewe af vir sy skape. Dit maak my so opgewonde om weer vandag ons te herinner: Jesus het sy lewe vir ons afgelê; vir ons gesterf sodat ons vir ewig kan lewe. Ons kan vandag vashou aan Jesus se woorde in Johannes 14. Jesus sê: “Ek gaan om vir julle plek voor te berei ...” Mag Psalm 23 vir jou ’n harts-Psalm wees. Jou Vader wat jou lei. Ek sit vandag en dink aan: Wat is jou gunsteling-Bybelvers? As ek die vraag sou vra – dan hoor ek die meeste, oud en jonk, sê: Psalm 23. “Die Here is my Herder.” Wat ’n groot skat. Om vandag weer Psalm 23 te lees en drie waarhede vir myself te neem. 1. Wanneer daar ’n persoonlike verhouding tussen my en God is, kan ek en jy tot rus kom, want Hy sorg vir my. In alles wat ek nodig het, elke emosie, verstaan God en wil Hy ons verseker dat Hy ons lei. 2. God sorg vir alle mense wat in hul nood na Hom roep. Ons as mense hoef ons nooit blind te staar teen enige omstandighede en ons daardeur laat oorweldig nie. Jy is nooit alleen nie. Ons Herder is by ons. 3. Vir ons wat naby die Here is – daar is oorvloed, ongeag wat die omstandighede mag wees. Dit is nie altyd so maklik om te leef asof daar net goeie tye is nie. Dit is in daardie donker tye dat ons naby God is en Hy by ons. God nooi elkeen van ons as sy eregaste.

Life and legacy of stalwart community member honoured KHOJANE MATUTLE The Virginia community, together with relatives and friends, mourns the passing of Pontsho Josephine Hlohlolo, affectionately known as “Puni”, who died following a brief hospitalisation last week. Born on 6 February 1947 at Mmamahabane in Ventersburg, Hlohlolo was the daughter of Kutu Mohoje and Mmadijeng Mohoje. She was born a twin, but her sister passed away in hospital shortly after birth. Puni began her primary education at the Mmamahabane Bantu Community School before continuing her schooling at the Harmony Mine School in Virginia. She later attended the now-de-

funct Tshiya College of Education in Qwaqwa, where she obtained her junior certificate. In 1968, she married Moiketsi “City” Hlohlolo. Their marriage endured for 58 years, standing as a testament to commitment, companionship and the sacred promise to remain together through life’s joys and challenges. Together, Puni and Moiketsi built a family and a life grounded in love, dignity and perseverance. They raised their children with values that continue to live on through the generations. Reflecting on the loss of his beloved wife, Moiketsi said: “Se sa feleng sea hlola,” which loosely translates to “what has no ending is a miracle” or “nothing lasts forever”.

Puni spent many years working in the retail industry in Virginia, serving a community closely connected to the mining industry. During the vibrant mining era of the 1970s and 1980s, she played her part in helping miners look and feel their best. Her work was about more than selling clothing. Through her dedication, warmth and attention to her customers, she helped restore a sense of pride, confidence and dignity to the hardworking men who formed the backbone of the Goldfields economy. Her working life later took her to Harmony Gold Mine’s No. 4 Shaft, where she worked as a cook. In the demanding environment of

the Goldfields, her contribution went beyond preparing meals. She helped nourish a workforce whose labour sustained families and communities, while her warmth and dedication helped create a sense of

home and community in the workplace. Puni’s life was one of service, family and perseverance. Her story is intertwined with the history of Virginia and its mining communities, and her contribution will be remembered by those whose lives she touched. She leaves behind her husband, Moiketsi; children Mpho, Tseko, Sephiri, Theko and Mamerae (Ntswaki); 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter, but the values she embodied – love, dedication, resilience and family – will continue through the generations she leaves behind.

Dancers outperform competitors Dancers of the Vibez Dance Studio delivered a series of impressive performances at two recent competitions, collecting numerous awards and top placings across a wide range of dance disciplines and age groups. The studio enjoyed a successful outing at the Clash of the Titans Competition, held in Kroonstad on 15 August. In the festival section, Vibez dancers secured three diamond awards, one super gold, three gold, four special silver, eight silver, and three high bronze medals. Team earn double glory within 2 days It was a weekend to remember for Setshabelo Public School as the Setshabelo Ladies soccer team delivered their best performance ever in two consecutive tournaments. On 28 August the team was crowned Free State Provincial Champions after a dominant and disciplined performance throughout the provincial championships. The girls lifted the trophy and gold medals with pride, sparking celebrations across the school community. Less than 24 hours later, the same squad showed resilience and heart as they battled through strong competition to reach the final of the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, finishing in second place as finalist booking their place in the national finals. This historic double achievement has cemented Setshabelo Ladies as a top schools team in the Free State. Coach Thato Lemphane Mokgothu has worked tirelessly training the girls, and the team manager, Dikeledi Mokgothu, has supported and managed the team from early morning training sessions to the big stage.

Mokgothu said the girls showed courage, unity and resilience. “They prepared well, supported

each other, and represented the school with pride. We are incredibly proud,” she said.

Mokgothu added that it was indeed a proud moment for the school. “The girls have worked hard and

earned every success. We now wish them well as they prepare for coming tournaments.”

Runners stand out MARTI WILL The eighth edition of the Rand Water Vaal River City Marathon brought the town to a standstill on Sunday 13 September, as thousands of runners took to the streets in one of the region’s most anticipated long-distance events. Welkom was well represented, with two local athletes delivering standout performances and earning places on the podium. Nkhetheni Masupa secured third place in the Men’s Masters category, completing the marathon in an impressive 2:54:01. Nthabiseng Tinte claimed first place in the Women’s Grandmasters category, crossing the finish line in 4:10:34.

For Masupa, the race served as an important test ahead of his participation in next month’s Chicago Marathon in America. Masupa is working towards completing the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors series, with Chicago representing another step towards his goal. “I’m going for my fifth original Abbott Marathon Majors star. Tokyo Marathon, in Japan, will be my last star, and it’s not easy to get a ticket to compete,” he said. He added that even runners who had already completed all six majors could face years of waiting for an opportunity to secure a place in Tokyo. “I have a friend with five stars who has been trying to get Tokyo for seven years now, with no luck.” With a strong performance

in Vanderbijlpark behind him, Masupa now turns his attention to Chicago, where he will compete against some of the world’s leading distance runners. Hosted at the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Isak Steyl Stadium, the soldout marathon has become a key fixture on the running calendar. Known as an early qualifier, it provides runners with an opportunity to secure qualifying times for both the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons. The event is organised by renowned South African sports administrator Dr Molefi Oliphant, in conjunction with Athletics Vaal Triangle, and is sanctioned by Athletics South Africa. Rand Water has been the official sponsor since the marathon’s inception eight years ago.

Wys haar staal Megan Nel, ’n onderyser aan die Goudveld-Hoërkool in Welkom, het Sondag 30 Augustus aan die Tinman Tri Series-uitdaging in Johannesburg deelgeneem.
