WHAT began as a house party in Despatch ended in tragedy when a man (29) was fatally stabbed after accidentally hitting a toddler with a stone during an argument on Saturday morning, 4 October
Shervago Hanse (29) was murdered
following the incident, and another man (29) has been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in connection with his death
According to a SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, it is alleged that the victim was fatally stabbed after he accidentally hit a
two-year-old toddler with a stone following a heated argument
“Police records indicate that at approximately 04:00, the homeowner wanted her children’s friends to leave her premises following a binge drinking party at her house in Albatross Street, Reservoir Hills, Des-
patch ”
Janse van Rensburg added that it is alleged that as friends were vacating the premises, one of them started to argue with the homeowner’s daughter
“He threw a stone, but missed and struck a toddler (2),” she said “On seeing that his nephew was injured, the toddler’s uncle retaliated and stabbed Hanse, who later died in hospital ”
The uncle (29) was arrested and is expected to appear in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 October
WILLOW Dam recreational area, a municipal property developed for family relaxation, has become an informal weekend gathering place for residents, resulting in documented issues including litter accumulation, broken bottles, and vandalism of trees
This weekend, visitors to the park allegedly chopped down trees for firewood, adding to existing concerns about noise complaints from loud music, safety hazards from broken glass and debris, and the absence of waste disposal infrastructure on the property
The Parks Department, responsible for the maintenance of the area, has indicated challenges in
Residents report using this space owing to limited alternative recreational facilities in the area, while authorities cite enforcement difficulties regarding existing prohibitions on glass bottles and open fires
Ward Councillor Roelf Basson
shared that “the Willow Dam recreational area was developed for family relaxation in general and not as a picnic spot for drinking and braai, which is currently the order of the day and, in my view, being abused
“If rules are enforced, it should be a bottle-free area, similarly open fires Both these activities are prohibited but not controlled With regard to noise
levels, there are means to have these controlled through the noise pollution section and enforced by SAPS and Metro Police regarding bylaws ”
He added that the Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance of the area, which includes the general appearance and waste disposal on a daily basis
“After an engagement with Parks, one got the impression that they do not have the ability to control what is currently transpiring ”
Basson added that “the irony is that just a few kilometres away, the Springs Day Camping site is available and perfectly suitable for the use that Willow Dam is being put to I’m not sure why
Willow Dam is preferred - perhaps because it’s nice and central and free
“I am fully aware of the prevailing situation through physical observation and following social media complaints, but the authorities are throwing their hands in the air in hopelessness
“I must remind the public how revellers were making use of Channer Street for parking and blocking it, even for emergency services, but this was resolved by establishing a parking area on site, alleviating that problem ”
Basson shared what he believes should be the way forward for mitigating this situation
“The Department must ensure that the rules for the use of the
facility are enforced and used within limits Secondly, should it not yield success, one should involve the necessary law enforcement agencies to ensure that the use of the facility is within limits
“I also wish to appeal to our public in general to cooperate and make the amenity accessible for its purpose and to abide by the rules of the game Do not chop down the trees to make fires - I must register my total dismay at that Anybody who is found doing that or transgressing rules must bear the brunt,” he concluded
The municipality was approached for comment, but no response was received at the time of going to print
A YEAR ago, a two-tonne rock burst into Earth's atmosphere from space, and a fragment was found by nineyear-old Eli-zé du Toit in the Eastern Cape
Twelve months later, scientists have tracked the Nqweba Meteorite back to its origin in the Main Asteroid Belt between Jupiter and Mars
At a public lecture hosted by Nelson Mandela University on 23 September, Professor Roger Gibson from Wits University's School of Geosciences shared insights about this remarkable finding and highlighted the crucial role of citizen science observers
"The excitement and sense of wonder people felt when they saw 'fire in the sky' and quickly reported it was critical to scientists researching this event," said Gibson about the event on 25 August last year, when the meteorite appeared as a brilliant fireball across the Eastern Cape Eli-zé found the first fragment in the Nqweba (Kirkwood) district when she saw a small dark rock fall from a tree in her grandparents' garden It was presented to Dr Carla Dodd from Nelson Mandela Univer-
sity's Department of Geosciences, who quickly contacted colleagues from Rhodes and Wits universities
"Our response time was critical to pinpoint sightings and find more fragments in a vast area," Gibson explained "Within 24 hours, it was world news, bringing pressure as meteorite hunters arrived from everywhere There's huge money in private meteorite collections "
The multi-university teams scoured the area between Nqweba and Cape St Francis, sleeping only four hours a night By day twelve, four fragments had been added to Eli-zé's sample, and by day 18, five more were found
"We found a total mass of half a kilogram from what was initially a two-tonne rock travelling at 20km per second We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have found what we have," Gibson said
The Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Resources Authority issued permits within two days, allowing immediate organisation - a stark contrast to Botswana's 2018 meteorite find, where delays allowed unpermitted hunters to reach the area first Gibson emphasised that the Nqwe-

ba find "offers the opportunity to look across vast distances of space to another world and back in time to conditions that formed our own world "What makes this discovery special is its collaborative nature, built around citizen scientists and multiple institutions across countries
The ongoing research includes teams from the Astronomical Society of South Africa (ASSA), NASA's SETI Institute, and international research laboratories
NASAs Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies recorded the event as it happened Over 150 written witness reports were compiled from citizen observers, some from as far as Ceres and Bloemfontein, over 550km away Mobile phone, dashcam, and security videos were tracked down across the Eastern Cape Video analysis allowed ASSAs Tim Cooper to identify at least 18 break-up events in the fireball, visible for over 250 kilometres along the coastal region between Mossel Bay and Nqweba People felt ground vibrations from the shock wave, and witnesses described hearing thunder and screeching sounds as rock fragments whistled past
Scientists now know the Nqweba meteorite is a rare achondritic Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite (HED) breccia a rock made of broken fragments HED meteorites originate from Vesta, the second-largest body in the Main Asteroid Belt
"We know a lot about Vesta because NASA's Dawn space probe studied it in 2011-2012," Gibson explained "That mission confirmed it's a protoplanet that formed a metal core Its size (525 km across) allowed it to conserve heat long enough to completely melt, with metal sinking inward to form a nickel-iron core and silicate melts crystallising around it " These processes created magmatic rocks largely indistinguishable from Earth rocks, apart from their exceptional age and chemical signatures HED meteorites show Vesta was solid by 4 56 billion years ago, only 40 million years after solar system formation
The ten main fragments display beautiful black glassy fusion crusts with bubbles, wrinkles and flow lines, showing how airflow dragged melted material backwards during their fiery descent Broken surfaces reveal concrete-like mixtures of
green crystals and rock fragments in a grey matrix
For analysis, the team used CT scanners to build 3D images, optical and electron microscopes for mineralogical information, and electron microprobes for chemical data These steps were necessary for submission to the International Meteoritical Society's Nomenclature Committee
The Committee approved the application in September 2025, allowing the team to submit results for publication Scientists are now pie-cing together mineralogical, textural, and geochemical evidence to build the fragments' "life story" and, by extension, Vesta's history
"Future isotopic analysis will help us understand how this particular rock mixture formed and what happened between when it was blasted off Vesta and its arrival on Earth," Gibson said Professor Lew Ashwal, who studied the first Apollo lunar samples, remains as excited as the search team members While pursuing scientific analysis, they continue searching for more pieces to expand knowledge about our solar system and share discoveries with the public
KIRKWOOD Public Library in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood) has been named this year's winner of the prestigious LIASA-Ndende Public/Community Library of the Year Award at the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) 2025 Conference
The library was selected as the national winner from three outstanding nominees: Kirkwood Public Library (Eastern Cape), Bakgoma Public Li-
brary (Limpopo), and Zamdela Public Library (Free State) This recognition reflects the innovative work of Kirkwood Library and demonstrates what is possible when public service is rooted in passion, inclusivity, and purpose, even in rural and under-resourced settings
The conference highlighted the vital role libraries play in driving innovation, supporting entrepreneurship, and empowering diverse communities across the country Kirkwood Library was honoured for its outstanding contribution to

championing technological innovation, including the integration of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) tools within the library and information services sector
The municipality is very proud of this achievement Sundays River Valley Municipality (SRVM) Mayor Solethu Lucas said, “Kirkwood Public Library stands out owing to its exceptional innovation, community-driven approach, and unwavering staff commitment, despite operating with limited resources The staff often use their personal devices and borrow tablets from colleagues within the municipality to support learners entering national competitions Their commitment to national programmes and digital transformation has never failed ”
He added that what sets them apart is that the library has become a hub for technology, community partnerships, and community-based innovation, playing a vital role in addressing local challenges with practical solutions
Prioritising libraries in the digital era, Lucas said, “Libraries are and remain a foundation of community development in the Sundays River Valley Municipality Kirkwood Library, like others in our municipality, provides essential services that many residents cannot afford on their own These include photocopying and printing, lifelong learning opportunities, digital skills training, job-seeking support, and access to e-government platforms like online ID applications ”
Regarding how this national recognition will align with the municipalitys broader digital transformation strategy, he said the award validates SRVM's broader strategy of inclusive digital transformation, prioritising the community they serve “It affirms that our municipality's vision

Library in Nqweba has been named this year’s
to modernise public services through innovation, especially in rural areas, is both achievable and impactful ”
He added, “The recognition of Kirkwood Library sends a clear message: that even municipalities with modest resources can lead in digital innovation if they prioritise people, partnerships, and long-term development
Our commitment to creating smart libraries, supporting e-learning, and building digital skills is central to how we plan to empower citizens and future-proof public services in the Sundays River Valley ”
Beyond the technology aspect, Lucas shared the measurable impact the municipality has seen since implementing these innovations “The results have been transformative
One of the most notable impacts is the increased digital confidence amongst learners and youth, many of whom previously struggled with even basic computer skills ”
He added that thanks to consistent exposure at the library, many are now conducting online research and submitting assignments digitally af-
ter participating in national online competitions like the MobiReadathon Digital Reading Competition
“Kirkwood Library has also seen a significant rise in digital engagement, with a notable increase in eBook circulation, ranking in the top three and being recognised by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (District) “The library has become a central point for community engagement, with programmes supporting unemployed youth and school dropouts, especially in agricultural training such as citrus production that aligns with the local economy This is achieved through a MOU with Sundays River Valley Collaborative, which is assisting with computers, networking equipment, furniture, and related materials
“This will be piloted in two libraries: Kirkwood Public Library and Lungephi April Public Library These initiatives demonstrate how libraries can actively contribute to local skills development and economic empowerment,” he concluded

According to Ward 49 Councillor, Georgen Miggels, on Sunday, 12 October, they will have cross-planting and wreath-laying at the four-way for all the people who died owing to horrific crime
“We invite family members of those who died to come and join us to plant a cross (which will be supplied by the Fraternal) We are inviting everyone from the community as we will also erect a bigger cross that will overlook the other small crosses which will be planted there for every person who died,” he said
Miggels added that the programme starts at 15:00 at the four-way stop in Kamesh Road For further information, contact the Public Relations Officer, Bishop Van Rooyen at 068 273 0470
Miggels believes that this initiative will be a symbol of hope for the com-
MONDAY - FRIDAY:
munity “It is an important initiative as it could be the beginning of healing for all I am personally affected, as I also live in the war zone The community needs to join hands with my office and the Fraternal to stand up against crime by encouraging our kids to go back to school and to go back to church ”
He added that it would be ideal if the Nelson Mandela Municipality could increase Metro Police visibility and also establish a Metro Police satellite station on this side of the metropolitan area to mitigate criminal activity
Miggels said that the Metro Police
in NMBM operates a 24-hour Control Room Residents should contact the Control Room for assistance with issues related to load reduction updates, multi-disciplinary enforcement projects, and familiarisation with municipal by-laws

THE Rotary Club of Uitenhage has welcomed its 78th president, Mia Smit, who said it is both an honour and a privilege to lead one of the town’s oldest and most respected service organisations
“It is an honour and privilege to be inducted as the 78th president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, a formidable club with a rich history that continues to grow each year,” Smit said “For each Rotarian, serving the community is a passion, as our motto ‘Service Above Self’ clearly states ”
Smit, a social worker with 17 years of experience, began her career in child protection and elder care after completing her studies at North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus
Her commitment to community work started while she was a student, when she volunteered several times a week at a local school for children with disabilities
“Those early experiences taught me a sense of responsibility toward those less fortunate,” she said “It was also
through those moments that I discovered the value of strengthening human connections within our communities ”
Smit joined Rotary in 2009 and received the Paul Harris Fellowship in 2017 in recognition of her outstanding service to the community
“With open dialogue, we can identify community needs and design projects that empower individuals to grow and contribute meaningfully to society,”
she said
“If you lead by example, work hard, and have fun while doing it, you create joy and joy is what binds communities and drives lasting change ”
Under her leadership, the Rotary Club of Uitenhage will continue aligning its projects with Rotary International’s areas of focus, which include education, community development, and youth empowerment
“Each new president brings a fresh perspective,” Smit said “Our focus adapts according to the needs of the community, ensuring that we continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of others ”

ON 30 September and 1 October, Volkswagen Group Africa’s (VWGA) Product Development team, in partnership with Nelson Mandela University’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in ACTION, welcomed 114 Grade 9 learners from six schools around Nelson Mandela Bay, namely Andrew Rabie High School, Strelitzia High School, Uitenhage High School, Hoërskool Cillié, Marymount Secondary School, Motherwell High School and Sanctor High School
The learners were given a first-hand look into the world of automotive engineering, gaining valuable exposure to the innovative work being carried out by VWGA engineers
STEM in ACTION is a community engagement initiative spearheaded by the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology at Nelson Mandela University The programme focuses on supporting Grade 8–12 learners and their educators in Mathematics and Physical Science, with the objective of equipping learners with the competencies required to pursue further studies in STEM-related careers In addition to strengthening academic foundations, STEM in ACTION plays a vital role in fostering career awareness by providing opportunities for learners and teachers to explore STEM-related career pathways
“Our aim at STEM in ACTION is to ignite curiosity and open doors to opportunities that many learners may not have imagined possible,” said Nabeelah Jappie, Marketing Coordinator at STEM in ACTION “Activities like these not only make science and engineering
exciting and accessible, but they also help young people build scarce skills they will need to thrive in the future Collaborations with industry partners such as VWGA are invaluable in showing learners the real-world of what they are learning in the classroom ” VWGA is in its first year of partnering with STEM in ACTION and seeks to inspire learners to pursue careers in STEM As part of this collaboration, VWGA’s Product Development team gave participants a glimpse into the daily life of an engineer and encouraged them to consider this career path On both days, learners were divided into groups of three and provided with equipment to build their own miniature vehicles, designed to race down a ramp The excitement was evident as teams eagerly watched their creations speed down without any assistance, cheering each other on with enthusiasm Beyond the fun and energy, the activity encouraged problem-solving, creativity, and innovative thinking - key skills that are essential in the fields of science and engineering
“At Volkswagen Group Africa, we recognise the urgent need to grow South Africa’s pool of skilled engineers and innovators,” said Réhan Strydom, Product Development Division Head “By opening our doors to learners and showing them what engineering looks like in practice, we hope to grow the profession, spark curiosity and passion, and ultimately contribute to building the next generation of problem-solvers who will help drive both our industry and our country forward,” Strydom concluded
