THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has completed 12 disaster recovery infrastructure projects worthmore thanR142 million, restoringcritical roads, bridges andstormwatersystems damaged during the devastating floods that struck the metro in 2024.

According to an NMBMstatement, the projects were funded through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant, which contributed R89million, and the MunicipalDisaster Response Grant, which provided R53.9 million. The funding was used to rehabilitate infrastructure across several communities,witha focus on improving resilience against future extreme weather events.

The delegation, togetherwith representatives from theDepartment of Cooperative Governanceand Traditional Affairs, the ProvincialDisasterManagement Centreand theMunicipalInfrastructure Support Agent (Misa),gathered on Monday 3Augustfor a pre-briefing before embarking on aseries of site visits to inspect thecompleted projects

According to municipalspokesperson SithembisoSoyaya, the programme included the rehabilitation of damaged roads, the reconstruction of the MatanzimaBridge,the rehabilitation of theCAT Canal inWard 48, and therepair and restoration of theDeMist Canal andFourieStreet in Kariega.

The first site visit took placeatMoegesukkel in Kabah, Kariega, where officialsinspected theconstruction of anew surfaced road that replaced the previous gravel road.The project alsoincluded the installation of stormwater infrastructureand water pipelines to improve accessibility, strengthen thearea'sresilience to future flooding and enhance service delivery.

The delegation then visited the Jones Street/ Taylor Water Pipeline Project,where R5 million was invested to restore water infrastructure damaged during the floods.The work included reconstructing and raising the canal's concrete walls, repairing thewaterpipeline, protecting sewer infrastructure, removing debrisand installing perimeter fencing to re-

duce the risk of future flood damage

was the CAT Canal in Kariega, where rehabilitation work included repairs to thewater pipeline and theinstallationofperimeter fencing to protect municipal infrastructure, improve public safety and strengthen theresilienceofessential services

Asecond round of inspectionsincluded the De Mist Canal and Fourie Street project in Kariega, where officials assessedthe reconstructed roadway, rebuilt canal wall andrehabilitated embankment.Municipal officials said the infrastructure had already demonstrated itsresilience during theheavyrainfall experienced in May this year.

The delegation also visitedthe newly constructed Matanzima Bridge in Nomakwazana.

The projectdelivereda new bridge, pedestrian pavements and stormwater culverts, providing asafer crossing for theMqolomba and Jabavu communities. Accordingtothe municipality, the bridge also withstood therecent floods withoutsustainingdamage.

At theMatanzima Bridge/Panona Tini project in KwaNobuhle, officialsinspected completed stormwaterinfrastructure, pipeline installations and thereinstatedroadway. The municipality said thecompleted works had restored critical infrastructure, improved accessfor residents and strengthened the area's resilience to future flooding.

Municipal officials said thesite visits formed part of ongoingoversightofthe grant-funded recovery programme and provided stakeholderswith an opportunitytoassess theimplementation of theprojects, reflect on lessons learntand identify best practices for future disasterrecovery initiatives.

THENelson Mandela BayMunicipality (NMBM)has officially launchedits "Fill Up the Bay" pothole repaircampaign, backedbya R61 millionroad maintenance budgetaimed at restoringthe metro's deteriorating road network.

ExecutiveMayor CouncillorBabalwa Lobishe launched the campaign in Perseverance on Monday 3August, where repair teams were alreadyon the ground in Ward 30, covering Veeplaas, KwaDwesi andthe Perseverance Industrial Area.

According to aNMBM statement, of the R61 millionallocation, R30 million hasbeen earmarked specifically for acceleratedpothole repairs acrossthe metro. Thebalance will fund broaderroad maintenance interventions, including stormwaterinfrastructure maintenance, drainage improvements and therehabilitation of flood-damagedroads

Speaking at the launch, Lobishe acknowledged the daily toll that potholes take on residents and said the municipality was acting decisively.

“Every day, thousands of our residents travel on these roads to get to work, school, healthcarefacilities and places of business. We understand the frustration that potholes cause and that is why we are acting decisively to accelerate repairs across Nelson Mandela Bay,” she said. “At thesame time,weare looking beyond potholes.Byinvestinginstormwater infrastructure andotherpreventativeroad maintenanceinterventions, we are addressing

some of the underlying causes of road deterioration and protecting the long-term integrity of our road network.”

The mayor appealed to residents for patience as the programme is rolled out in phases, assuringcommunities that all 60 wards will receive attention. “The programme is being rolled outinphases to ensure all wards receive thenecessary attention,” Lobishe said.

Atotal of 12 contractorshaveallegedly been appointedand are already deployed across the metro, operating fromfive depots alongsidemunicipal road maintenance teams.Each contractor is required to recruit three local workers from every ward in which work is undertaken, creating employment opportunities and facilitating skills transfer within communities.Municipalengineers and technicalofficials will oversee all projects to ensure quality workmanship and compliancewith engineering standards.

The NMBM claims that work has already commencedin10ofthe municipality's60 wards, with crews systematically repairing damagedroads. The programme prioritises areas mostseverely affected by potholes, deteriorating road conditions and flood-related damage. During the launch, Lobishevisited Mhalokotshane Street in KwaDwesi, where municipal teams were carrying out pothole repairs.She engagedwith workers on the ground and receivedprogress updates on the work being undertaken.

Theaccelerated programme builds on the

municipality'sbroader infrastructurerecovery efforts. During the previous financial year, morethan R50 million was invested in reconstructing two flood-damaged bridges,restoring critical transport links across the metro.

This financial year, the municipality will continue investing in roads and stormwater infrastructure, including the reconstruction of the collapsed William Moffett Expressway bridge, the clearing and maintenance of stormwater drainage systems, the refurbishment of damaged stormwater infrastructure and road marking projects in KwaDwesi, Despatch and KwaMagxaki.

The municipality has calledonresidents to assist by reporting potholes through its official reporting channels, helping officials prioritise repairs and respondmoreefficiently to road defects.

“Thisprogramme is aboutdelivering safer roads, restoring public confidence, supporting economic growth and ensuringthat our communities experience visible improvements in the quality of municipal services,” Lobishe said.

As work gathers pace, residents will increasingly see municipalteams and contractors repairing potholes, maintainingroads and strengthening infrastructure across themetro. Thecampaign formspartofongoing efforts to restore road infrastructure, improve service delivery and ensuresafer travelfor motorists and pedestrians throughout Nelson Mandela Bay.

THE CCTV cameras currentlybeing repaired in parts of KariegaCBD arepart of the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality's (NMBM) existing surveillance network and not anew installationproject, confirms the NMBM spokesperson.

After observing contractors repairing CCTV cameras at several locations in the town, UD Express approached the Municipality forclarityonthe work being carried out.

Questions sent to the Municipality sought information on the scopeofthe work, the budget and funding source, the number and locationsofcameras, the department responsible for the project, monitoring arrangements,access to footage, and whether the initiative was intended to help curb infrastructure vandalism, cable theft and other crime.

The Municipality was also asked whether similar work was planned elsewhere in Nelson Mandela Bay and when the Kariega work wouldbecompleted.

In response, Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya clarified that the Municipality doesnot currently have aproject to install new CCTV camerasinKariega

“The Municipality hasapproximately1000 CCTV cameras installed across the metro,” Soyaya said.

He explained that the Acting City Manager has recentlyapprovedacomprehensive functionality assessment of themunicipal CCTV

network tobeundertaken by theSafety and Security Directorate.

“This assessment work will be inclusive of Kariegaand thescope will also include a needs assessmentfor more cameras in additionalareasinGqeberha, Kariega and Despatch,”hesaid.

According to Soyaya,the assessment aims to determine the operational statusofthe existing cameras and identify those requiring repairs or upgrades so they can be restored to full functionality.

FOLLOWING the resounding success of its inaugural tournament in Kariegaearlier thisyear, the Nelson Mandela Bay Klawerjas (NMBK) Union is preparing for another exciting chapter in its mission to revive and strengthen the game of klawerjas.

What started with four clubs at the inaugural tournament has alreadygrown to six participating clubs, aclear indication that NMBK's vision is gaining momentum. The union is also delighted to welcome participation from Central Karoo, further expanding itsfootprint and strengthening relationships between regions

From 8to10August, NMBK will host its second inter-regional tournament in Mossel Bay, in partnership with the host club, Young Starrs K.C. The tournament will featureVikings K.C., Schauder K.C., Diamonds K.C., CatsK.C., B/West K.C., and the host Young Starrs K.C. The inclusion of clubs from Central Karoo and the South Western District reflects the growing appeal of thisinitiative.

The Kariega tournament demonstrated that

competitive klawerjas remains alive and well, with high-quality matches, outstanding sportsmanship, and aspirit of unity that inspired players and supporters alike. Building on that momentum, NMBK is now extending its reach intothe SouthWestern District and the Central Karoo to create stronger ties between clubs and encourage the continued growth of the sport NMBK's vision is not only to organise competitive tournaments but also to strengthen the foundations of klawerjas by fostering unity, friendship and healthy competition across regional boundaries. The union believes that by working together,clubs can help restore the game to the prominence it enjoyed before the Covid-19 pandemic. Jeuglede van Die Voortrekkerskan in hulgr. 12-jaar die bekroonde toekenning op nasionalevlak verwerf nadat hulle 'n deurlopende proses van leierskapontwikkeling van gr. 8tot 12 voltooihet
