POLICE in the EasternCape are investigating two separate shooting incidentsatHillwatch Informal Settlement, Kabah in Kariega.

Ashooting today, 27 July, claimed thelives of four people and has led to cases of murder and attempted murder. Aseparate incidenton18 Julyhas resulted in two counts of attempted murder and the murder of aminor. According to the SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, it is alleged that at approximately 12:00, asuspect opened fire on agroup of individuals.

“Upon arrival at the scene,SAPS members found four victims whohad sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” she said. “The deceased have been identi-

fied as threewomen,agedbetween 18 and 31, andone man aged 27.”

Gantana added that afifth male victim, who was alsowounded,was rushedtoanearby hospital for urgent medical attention. “Atthis stage, the motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made,” she said. “Preliminary investigations suggest thatonly one suspectwas involved in the incident.”

She added that, as this is an active crime scene, further details will be sharedindue course. “The names of thedeceased willbereleased once their nextofkin have been informed,” she said

Janse vanRensburg added that the suspects fled the scene but allegedly returned shortly afterwards and fired additional shots into the shack before fleeing on foot

DESPITE advice from the presiding magistrate Lungisile Mahlati to seek legal representation,one of Gqeberha’s most wanted suspects, facing18charges, confidently elected to represent himself.

On Thursday, 23 July at the Kariega Magistrate’s Court, two separate matters were dealt with involving Irvincia Basson before proceeding with anew case in which sheappeared alongsideco-accused Donovan Williams, also known as “Poenie.”

In the first matter, the State withdrew all eight charges against Basson after informing the courtthatit had been unable to trace thecomplainant andkey witness.

The courtheard that despite effortstolocate the complainant, they could not be found, making it impossiblefor the State to proceed with the prosecution. The matter was withdrawn rather than struck from the roll, and Basson’s Legal Aid attorney, Zithobile Mtengwana, raised no objection to thewithdrawal.

Although the charges against Basson were withdrawn, she remained before the court in connectionwith aseparate, newly enrolled matter alongside Williams.

Before proceedings commenced in the new case,the actingmagistrate Lungisile Mahlati reminded both accused that they had aconstitutionalright to legal representation and could apply for Legal Aid should they be unable to affordprivate attorneys. While Basson was represented by Legal Aid, Williams informed thecourt that he wished

to continue representing himselfdespite being fully aware of his right to legal assistance.

Magistrate Mahlaticautioned Williams about the seriousness of the charges he wasfacingand the risks associatedwith conducting his owndefencewithout formal legaltraining.Williams nevertheless maintainedthathewas confident in his ability to represent himself, and thecourt accepted his decision after satisfying itselfthatheunderstood theimplications.

Williams, whowas facing18 charges, told thecourt that although he had been informed of the chargesagainst him,hehad not yet received acopyofthe charge sheet.

The charges include four countsof conspiracy to commitmurder, five counts of murder, threecounts of robbery with aggravatingcircumstances, two counts of unlawfulpossession of afirearm,one count of unlawful possession of ammunition, onecount of forgeryand one count of fraud.

During proceedings, the defence indicatedthatitbelieved the eight charges previously withdrawn against Bassonhad beenincorporated into the new indictment involving Williams. Those charges includedconspiracytocommit robbery with aggravatingcircumstances, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, twocounts of trafficking in persons, twocounts of involvement in traffickinginpersons, one count of kidnapping and onecount of malicious damage to property.

As aresult, the defence requested copies of the charge sheet to under-

stand properly the allegations contained in the new matter.

Thecourt orderedthat bothaccused be providedwithcopies of the charge sheet,while copies of the docket wouldbemade availableat the nextcourt appearance.

Both accused abandoned theirbail applicationsand will remain in custody pendingtheirnextappearance

Before thematter waspostponed, Williams addressed the court to raise twopoints.Firstly, he said he had understood that the State was suggesting he had objected to bail, butthe courtclarifiedthat the record reflected his bail application had been abandoned, notopposed

Secondly, Williams sought clarity on how he wouldreceive copies of the charge sheet,saying he had understood they wouldbesent electronically. TheState clarifiedthat hardcopies wouldbeprovided.

Themagistrateagain encouraged Williams to reconsider obtaining legal representation, given the complexity and seriousnessofthe case, whichheagain refused.

Throughout the proceedings, Williams remained composed and confident despite facing multiple serious charges, while Basson’s mother and other family membersbecame visibly emotional and were seen crying in court. Basson’s alleged connection to the newly enrolled matter was not yet established in open courtduring Thursday’s proceedings. Basson wasvisibly happy at her family's presence as she was walking from the dock into the courtcells.

The matter waspostponed to 28 August, and both accused will remain in custody.

GQEBERHA businessman Rob Evans appeared brieflyinthe Gqeberha High Court on Wednesday, 22 July, for his pre-trial conference.

Evans is accused of premeditated murder, attempted murder,kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice in connectionwith the death of histhen 36-year-old girlfriend, Vanessa van Rensburg, in April 2025. The court heard that Evans’s defence had received allthe necessary documents from theState and indicated that it would be ready fortrial.

As he stepped downfrom the dock,Evans thanked the familymembers present in court, seemingly expressinghis gratitude fortheir support.

Burger also showed images of scratchmarks on Evans’s body, arguing: “Vanessa wasscratching you because she was fightingfor her life,” while Evans maintained a “no comment” stance.

The post-mortem also showed that one of Van Rensburg's ribs had been broken and had puncturedher lung, contradicting Evans’s earlier claim that her sonhad caused theinjury.

Burgerlaid out atimelineshowing that Evans left agathering earlyon19April 2025, apparently angry, and that Van Rensburg died at about 22:00, while security was only alerted at 01:30.

Evans has remained in custody since hisarrest on 9May 2025. His trial is scheduled to run from 3to21November 2026.
