Twelve new recruits bolster parks, cemeteries TWELVE newly recruited employees have joined the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's (NMBM) Parks and Cemeteries Sub-Directorate in a bid to strengthen operational capacity and improve service delivery across public open spaces and cemeteries. The new intake comprises 11 females and one male, who will undertake a range of horticultural and maintenance activities. These include weeding and maintenance of flower beds, general upkeep of municipal public open spaces, tree maintenance and related horticultural work, vegetation control, cemetery maintenance and upkeep, and supporting general beautification and maintenance initiatives within public open spaces. NMBM spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, said in a statement that the recruitment formed part of the Municipality's broader commitment to restoring dignity to the dead, promoting healthy livelihoods and improving the appearance of public spaces. Executive Mayor Councillor Babalwa Lobishe said the Municipality's investment in human resources and fleet was critical
to improving the conditions of municipal facilities and preserving the dignity of the deceased. "As a caring government, we have given special focus to the areas where our people will feel safe, cared for, and their dignity preserved. Capacitating the Parks and Cemeteries Sub-Directorate becomes critical for us in realising this mission. The investment in fleet and human resources will enhance the work." The improvement of cemetery conditions remains a key priority for the Sub-Directorate. The Sub-Directorate is prioritising ongoing maintenance and upkeep, including vegetation control, grass mowing, general cleaning and the improvement of the overall appearance and functionality of these facilities. Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Health Councillor Thsonono Buyeye said the maintenance of cemeteries and parks reflected the Municipality's commitment to caring for its communities. "As the MMC, I did give clear priorities to the officials. Cemeteries and Parks speak to our DNA as a caring Municipal-
ity. I am encouraged that we are making inroads." Soyaya added that fleet management has also been a key area of focus for the Sub-Directorate during the 2026/27 financial year, with work under way to improve the availability, suitability and management of its operational fleet to support teams responsible for maintaining cemeteries, parks and other municipal public open spaces. "An appropriate and adequately managed fleet is essential to ensuring that maintenance teams can reach service areas efficiently, transport the necessary equipment and respond to operational needs," he said. "Improved fleet capacity is expected to contribute towards more effective maintenance programmes, improved response times and strengthened service delivery." Soyaya stated that the combination of additional human resources and improved fleet management is expected to enhance the Sub-Directorate's ability to maintain municipal facilities and respond to the needs of communities across Nelson Mandela Bay.
SAPS Kariega issues safety warning for school drop-offs SAPS Kariega is warning motorists, particularly parents and caregivers transporting children to school, to remain vigilant following a number of Theft Out of Motor Vehicle incidents reported in the Kariega policing precinct during the morning school drop-off period. According to Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the incidents occur when motorists leave their vehicles unattended, even for a short period, creating an opportunity for criminals to target valuables left inside the vehicles.
“Parents and caregivers are urged to ensure that no valuable items, including handbags, laptops, cellular phones, wallets and other electronic devices, are left visible inside their vehicles,” she said. She reminds motorists to lock their vehicles properly before walking away and to check that the vehicle is securely locked before leaving the area. “The community is further advised to remain alert to suspicious persons or vehicles in the vicinity of schools and to report any suspicious activity to the police
immediately,” she said. “Motorists should also avoid leaving their vehicles unattended with the engine running or the keys inside the vehicle.” SAPS Kariega is increasing police visibility and monitoring around schools during peak drop-off periods. “Motorists and the community are urged to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to prevent becoming victims of crime,” Janse van Rensburg concluded.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber says that more than 60% of the metro’s water is being lost through the system as Nelson Mandela Bay heads towards a hotter, drier summer, putting renewed focus on water losses and infrastructure maintenance despite dams currently being full. The South African Weather Service’s latest seasonal outlook points to a high likelihood of below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures between November 2026 and January 2027. “Our dams being full is positive, but it should not create a false sense of security,” says Chamber Chief Executive Officer Denise van Huyssteen. “If we are heading into a hotter, drier summer, we need to use this window to address water that is already being lost. Losing more than 60% of our water through the system is a vulnerability we cannot afford to ignore.” Water-loss reduction must be accompanied by basic infrastructure maintenance, including clearing stormwater drains and canals. While below-normal rainfall is anticipated, the National Disaster Management Centre’s Seasonal Hazard Profile identifies potential cut-off low-pressure systems during September and October, which could bring heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm, flash flooding and cold conditions. Anticipated strong wind events could further aggravate fire conditions. Nelson Mandela Bay is identified as particularly exposed to windstorms during spring, increasing the potential for rapid spread of fires and storm-related damage. “Preparedness means dealing with infrastructure vulnerabilities before they become emergencies,” says Van Huyssteen. “That means reducing unaccounted and non-revenue water losses by fixing leaks and addressing water billing issues, proactively maintaining infrastructure, clearing stormwater drains and ensuring we are prepared for weather-related risks.” The Chamber’s Risk Management Desk is working with stakeholders on practical measures to strengthen the metro’s ability to pre-
pare for and respond to weather-related risks. One intervention is a 12-month fire hydrant project led by Supporting Fire Services South Africa and implemented through the Risk Management Desk, improving hydrant functionality, accessibility and monitoring to ensure firefighters can access a reliable water supply during emergencies. To date, 336 hydrants have been rehabilitated and 109 hydrant markers painted. A geolocation and monitoring system is being used to improve visibility of the hydrant network. Seven YES participants are involved in the programme, supported through training and technical assistance from City Paint and Tool, Bay Fire Safety Solutions and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Water and Fire Department. Claire Lötter, Head of Supporting Fire Services South Africa, says the anticipated summer conditions reinforce the need to address firefighting vulnerabilities before they are tested. “Fire resilience starts well before a fire breaks out. When conditions become hotter and drier, the margin for error becomes smaller, making functioning and accessible fire hydrants even more critical,” says Lötter. “Through this partnership with the Business Chamber, we are addressing a vulnerability that can directly affect fire services’ ability to respond effectively.” The Risk Management Desk is also using data and spatial mapping to identify areas exposed to flooding and fire, in collaboration with the South African Weather Service, disaster management authorities, the municipality and emergency responders. For businesses, the Chamber says the seasonal outlook should be treated as an early warning to strengthen continuity measures, including reviewing water-contingency plans, identifying critical infrastructure vulnerabilities and assessing fire risks. “The opportunity is in front of us,” says Van Huyssteen. “We have water in our dams. The priority now is to stop losing valuable water, maintain the infrastructure that gets it to consumers and ensure we are ready for the weather extremes summer will bring.”

Eastcape Midlands ready for skills competition in Shanghai TWO students from Eastcape Midlands TVET College (EMC) are set to represent South Africa on the international stage after winning gold medals at the National Skills Competition. Nikita Fourie and Angela Philip were recognised during a WorldSkills Send-Off Ceremony held by EMC as they prepare to compete at the WorldSkills International Competition in Shang-
hai, China. Fourie will participate in the Baking Skills category, while Philip will compete in IT Software Application Development. Both students earned their places at the international competition after achieving gold-medal finishes in their respective categories at the national competition. Fourie will travel with her mentor and lecturer, Sinethemba Mhlambiso, who is a Hospitality
lecturer at EMC. Philip will be accompanied by Gillmore Maziena, a lecturer in Information Technology and Computer Sciences. The send-off event was attended by EMC management, staff, students, the Student Representative Council (SRC) and external stakeholders. The gathering celebrated the students’ achievements and offered them encouragement ahead of their trip.
EMC Principal, Charl van Heerden, congratulated the students on their achievements and expressed his pride in their success, while wishing them well for the upcoming competition. The SRC Deputy President also encouraged the students to stay focused and proudly represent both the college and South Africa. Several external stakeholders have also supported the students as they prepare for their inter-
national journey. Nedbank, Standard Bank, the Uitenhage District Taxi Association, McMillan Education and Future Managers provided gifts to assist them during their trip. Competing at WorldSkills International will give Fourie and Philip an opportunity to demonstrate their technical abilities, gain international experience and compete against skilled young people from across the world.

Young lives transformed through reconstructive surgery ALULUTHO MADOLO FIFTEEN children received specialised reconstructive surgery at PE Provincial Hospital last week as part of a three-day programme hosted in partnership with the Smile Foundation and its donors. The programme, which ran from 16 to 18 September, provided children with access to specialised reconstructive procedures while also strengthening the skills of healthcare professionals involved in the programme. Smile Foundation Regional Coordinator Tanya Jackson said five patients underwent surgery on Wednesday, with another five scheduled for each of the remaining two days. "By the end of the week we have changed the lives of 15 children. With this small foundation we assist children, we are not just helping the child; we are changing the lives of the family," Jackson said. She said the impact of the surgeries extends beyond the physical changes, as children would have an opportunity to attend school,
pursue education and eventually enter the workforce. Tshidi Chabana-Xaba, the Chief Operating Officer of the foundation, said they were very excited about the ongoing collaboration. She said it changes the communities the children come from. "We are changing communities when we change these kids'lives. When they go back to their communities, they will be integrated into playing with other kids," said Xaba. "We are grateful to be doing this with the Eastern Cape Department of Health. We have never had any complaints, cancellations or postponements. We are grateful that we are helping kids far beyond the Eastern Cape and not just kids in the Eastern Cape only." Dr Saulene Swart, one of the surgeons, said that since the programme started, all the operations had gone well. "The main reason we do these types of things is that these kids are still young. When they grow up, there are a lot of psychological things that go around with

them. What is important for us is to make sure that each child feels like they are normal. We work with what we have available, and with the help of the provincial health department and Smile Foundation, our theatres have been placed and managed in a very nice and organised way,"said Swart. Siyanda Manana, the Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson, said it is important for the department to support the initiative because their aim is to provide good healthcare services to the people of the province. "I am happy with the progress and impact that we are making together with the partnership in the lives of these kids." He further explained that they have a database where they extract people after they go through the assessment process. They then invite them to hospitals for evaluation. Speaking to Express, Tasha Klaas, whose seven-year-old son, Thandolwethu Gaceni, was due to undergo reconstructive ear surgery said her feelings are all over the place. "I will be relieved when the operation is done. I was excited when I heard my child was going to be operated on because my child was being bullied at school," said Klaas. She further said that from the day her child was born, she had followed all the procedures she was instructed to follow by the clinic. She was told to wait for the child to turn seven years old before the operation could be done. Veroska Visagie, one of the mothers whose child's cleft palate was successfully operated on, was filled with tears of joy and relief. "I become very emotional when I speak about this. I am happy and grateful for the doctors and the Smile Foundation. I am happy that my son will now live a normal life and no child will tease him again," said Visagie.

Tint machines are available in-store to help customers get the colour required for their projects. Build It Kariega’s focus is not limited to the products it sells. The branch has continued its involvement in the local community, including supporting schools and community initiatives. “Without customers, growth wouldn’t be possible. Prettyboy is ’n tweemalige nasionale kampioen, ’n tweemalige Oos-Kaapse kampioen, en is al twee keer nasionaal met die beste bokser-toekenning weggestap. Op internasionale vlak het hy al ’n silwer- en ’n goue medalje verower. Altesaam 19 spanne en 190 boksers het reeds vir die toernooi geregistreer.
120 Porsches to take over Gqeberha ESMI WINDWAAI MORE than 100 Porsches have taken over the streets of Gqeberha as the Porsche Club Parade 2026 rolls through the city until 27 September, bringing a motoring spectacle ranging from historic 911s to the latest high-performance machines. TThe event is being coordinated by Karl Illenberger, president of the Porsche Club Parade and Porsche Club Eastern Cape. "The first Porsche Club Parade was held in 1998 in Gqeberha. I am so happy and proud to bring this national Porsche Club Parade back to Gqeberha," said Illenberger. All four Porsche clubs from across South Africa — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and KuGompo City — will meet at the Courtyard Hotel in Summerstrand. Members from the wider Eastern Cape region, stretching towards Mossel Bay, will also take part. The parade celebrates a shared passion for the Porsche marque, combining driving, friendship, motorsport and the opportunity to explore a different part of the country every two years. Members will take part in an action-packed programme that includes an iconic social run, top-speed run, time tri-
al, track day and Show & Shine, alongside a programme of social events and meals. The Porsche Club Parade 2026 promises to bring an unusual motoring spectacle to the city. Residents along the parade routes will have the opportunity to watch the procession as the vehicles make their way through Gqeberha. Show & Shine One of the main public events will be the Show & Shine at Baywest Mall on Thursday, 24 September, from 10:30 to 13:00 at the Upper Deck, Entrance 2. If the weather is poor, the display will move downstairs. According to Illenberger, the public can expect to see a wide range of Porsche models, including 911s dating from 1971 to the latest 911 GT3 RS, as well as Boxsters, Caymans, Cayennes and Macans. Visitors can also look forward to a "most beautiful Porsche" competition and the opportunity to get up close to the cars — and perhaps take a few selfies. The event is expected to attract both Porsche enthusiasts and local families, offering a glimpse of a marque whose history stretches back 78 years, from the first 356 to the 911, introduced in 1963.

Fast action at Scribante Raceway The second public event takes place at Scribante Raceway on Friday, 25 September, from 09:00 to 13:00. Entrance is free. Porsche drivers will put their cars and driving skills to the test on the circuit as participants compete to determine the fastest Porsche on the track. With 120 Porsches moving around Gqeberha, motorists could encounter an extraordinary convoy on routes including Marine Drive and the N2. The parade is being supported by several sponsors, including Gqeberha-based Detail My Ride, as well as XPEL, MUA Insurance, Bigfoot Express Freight and SafariProjek. For Gqeberha, the arrival of 120 Porsches will provide a unique motoring spectacle, ranging from historic 911s to the latest high-performance machines. The parade rotates every two years, with a different city where Porsche clubs are based hosting the event. The next time the Eastern Cape hosts the parade, it will be KuGompo City's turn.
