The clock is ticking forWestern Cape parents as the crucial school admissionapplication window for 2027 is officiallyopen, with just over a monthremaining before thedeadline.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) opened applications on Tuesday 10 March, forlearners entering Grade R, Grade 1, or Grade 8in2027. Parents have until Tuesday 14 April to submittheir applications. Officialsare urging families not to leave it until the last minute.

These roads already experience congestion, particularly duringschool peak hours. Residentsare concernedthat traffic mitigation plans are based on data that is already out of date, conceptualand notguaranteed, while the development scale is significant.”

According to EddieAndrews, the City of Cape Town’sdeputy mayor and Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, aresponse to the petition and any other inputsorcomments received will be sent to the applicant for theirresponse before the matter is tabled at the municipal planning tribunal.

“The application is in the advertising stage. The purpose of thisstage is to obtain inputsfrom the publicand the City’s internal technical departments. The technical departments will then consider capacity issues, assess the specialist studies provided and related matters,”he says.

Durbanville policehave issued awarning to all walkers, joggers andcyclists to be vigilantwhile exercising in streetsinpart of Durbanville

"Criminals target people who exercise alone —specifically in hotspot ares such as De Villiers Road, Langeberg Road, Sport Way and Verdi Boulevardclose to theCobble Walk Shopping Centre,"warns Col Gonum Munsamy,station commander of Durbanville police.

According to Munsamy robberies usually take place in theearly morning between 04:00 and07:00. "Jewellery, cellphones and watches areusually robbed. Residents are advised to exercise in groups, tryto exercise during the dayand leave their expensive items at home," she says.

BEAWAREOFFRAUDSTERS

Other crimes that are concerning in Durbanville is fraud andcybercrime.

"There are criminals pretending to call from abanking institute, Telkom or other cellphoneserviceproviders, requesting yourbankingapp pin. They then later withdraw moneyout of the victim’sbank account withouttheir permission," she says.

"Criminals alsopretend to be police officers, claiming thatthereisawarrant of arrestagainst avictim's name. Money is then demanded from the victim. Criminals alsobuy goods on the internet such as Facebook marketplaceand other social media trading sites. They send afalse proof of paymentand send an Uber to collect thegoods.Never give your pin or any other banking information over the phone. Confirm any payment made to you before handing overyour property," Munsamy says.

Monkey injured in N1 traffic accident

Amonkey was injured after being struck by avehicle on the N1 outbound near Durban Road last Friday, prompting a response from both the City of Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Theincident occurred on the N1 close to Durban Road in the direction of Bellville, with the SPCA confirming that the injured animal was transported to theiranimal hospital in Grassy Parkfor veterinary assistance.

TRAFFIC OBSTRUCTED

Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for the City's Traffic Services, said: “Traffic officers were called to the scene of amotor vehicle accident on the N1 outbound at the ramp to Durban Road, at 09:39 thismorning (Friday 13 March). Avehicle hitamonkey and the centre lane was obstructed temporarily. The vehicle involved in the accident left before officers arrived on the scene.”

Theorigin of the monkey remains unclear.

“It is not clear where the monkey had come from, but the injured animal was taken to the SPCA,” Jacobs added.

These timeless words seem so prescient and ominous in the uncertain times we find ourselves today, in thewakeofthe bloody war in the Middle-East, inflation, the Ukraine invasion, Trump's presidency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modifying and "streamlining" the way we work. Sadly, the skills more people are developing lately are related to howto "perfect" their AI prompts to visualise aconcept instead of struggling to understand photography or learn an instrument and use critical thinking. Idread the long-term effects on our brain processing power after decadesof relying on producing prompts instead of pondering and solving some of the problems ourselves.

It is often said that each generation assumes they are living in the "end times", while the one preceding it feels that today's youth are "doomed, spoilt, entitled" and frying theirbrains with TikTokand Instagram.

Whether it's thebaby boomers emerging from World War 2, millennials witnessing changes in music, movies and computers reshaping our daily lives.

Today we find Gen-Z caught in the throes of social media, political turmoil between the left and theright andsurviving a pandemic that shackled the world to slow down.

SADLY, SOMEOFUSLACKTHECURIOSITYAND EMPATHYTOIMAGINEWHATITSLIKEGROWING UPINADIFFERENTBACKGROUND,CULTURE, WAYOFEATINGANDCELEBRATINGLIFE.

However, Ifind Gen-Z's social consciousness and urge to call out injustice when it comes to racismand discrimination so importantand so inspiring when it comes to uniting in the nameoflove, peace and understanding, especially with thefar-rightsoeagerto mock and belittle their voices and stake in the world.

Sadly, some of us lack the curiosity and empathy to imagine what its like growing up in adifferent background, culture, way of eatingand celebrating life. Each of us is swimming in adark, mysterious current that can drown us or inspireusto swim.

There's areason why the 80s sounded different to the 90s, anew dawnhad descendedwith new exciting ideas.

Thus Iremain optimistic that the youth can lead us out of the darkness thatbreeds division, hatred, warfare and deliverus to amoment in time where we canspeak to each other around atable insteadof shouting and justifying our opinions

Amidst the social upheaval of the 60s another inspiring tune by TheBeatles echoed on the airwaves and still soothes to this daywith the simple message which said, "all you need is love".

Two teams from Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC) excelled by winning their respective divisions in the Western Province Trips League.

The Durbanville Amade history by ending top of the log in the tough Division 1. This victory leads to the promotionof the team to the top Premier division— the first ever team from Durbanville to achieve this.

After their last game last Saturday against Constantia, theteam finished as leaders with 58 points, pipping Fresnaye A(53 points). Third in Division 1was PinelandsAwith35.5 points.
