Anelderly couple were assaulted and robbed in their home at a complex in Vergesig, Durbanville, early on Tuesday morning, 3February.

AccordingtoCapt FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, the robbery took place at 04:00, leaving the house in the Vergesigcomplex in Robinson Streetransacked.

“The perpetrators took two firearms,a laptop, cellular telephones and personal items.

“According to reports the complainant and his wife weresleeping when four unknown men, their faces covered, entered their bedroom. The complainant was assaulted and forced to lie face-down and his hands were tied behind his back.”

Atotal of 122kg of litter was diverted from the Mosselbank Riverand season wetland in Fisantekraal in arecent community clean-up by the Mosselbank River ConservationTeam (MRCT)

Theclean-up on Saturday 31 January was presented in celebration of World Wetlands Day,celebrated annually on2 February.

With 55 volunteers from the community, MRCT membersand members of Fairmont High School's Wildlife Society, they managed to collect 46 bags of litter

“The Mosselbank WetlandsinGreenville in Fisantekraal plays avital rolefor humans,other ecosystems and the climate, providing essential ecosystem services such as water regulation, including flood control and water purification,” said Danielle Cronje, one of MRCT’s directors.

“Wetlands are critical to people and nature,given the intrinsic value of these ecosystems, and theirbenefits and services —including their environmental, climate, ecological, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational andaesthetic contributions to sustainable development and human wellbeing,” she said.

This powerful message wasatthe heart of WorldWetlands Day 2026.

Thisyear’s global theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage”, highlighted the enduring roleoftraditionalknowledge in protecting wetland ecosystems and

preserving cultural identity across generations, Cronje said.

Kaapjag Family Daya success

TheCentral branch of Kaapjag (The Cape Hunters and Game Conservation Association) hosted afamily day at the Durbanville Shooting Club.

Theevent took place on Saturday 17 January as part of the club’sregular Confederation of Hunting Associations of SouthAfrica's (CHASA’s) .22 gong shoot, which helps train and improve sport shooting.

“The gong shoot is designed to provide acompetitive and level playing field for all to participate. It involves shooting at various sized steel plates placed at various distances” said chair PaulHarding.

Afamily-entry option was added in order to attract the wives and children of Kaapjag members, many of whom have never held afirearm before.

“Our youngest entrant was four years old and thoroughly enjoyed having her father teach her how to aim and pull the trigger,” said Harding.

Seven family teams wereentered, which resulted in an additional 20 competitors on the day.

“One of our goals for thisyear is to increase new membership for Kaapjag Central and we feel that by encouraging wives and children to appreciate the sport, it will help us to achieve our goals,” said Harding.

TheJoubert family with Johann, Johann Jnrand Hugo Joubert were first.Second were the McIntyre family with Neil, Vanessa, Dan and Jenna McIntyre. The Young family with Andrew, Bridget and Maddi were third.

We had no medical aid. We knew the odds were against us. Still, when death feels close, logic takes aback seat. Walkinginto thereceptionarea, Iexplained that this was amedical emergency.

We left and went to aprivategeneral practitioner (GP), who then assessed and referred us to astate hospital.

But the divide becomes even clearer in astate hospital. Time stretches endlessly Hours pass while pain deepens. Wards aresoovercrowded that patients lieon floors, bodies against walls and hardened benches.

Security guards, hardened by constant chaos, enforce order with little patience or compassion, as though authority is the only thing keeping the system from collapse.

This is not astory about individual failure. It is about systemic inequality

In theory, healthcare is ahumanright. In practice, it is aprivilege.One that mirrors our economic divides.

Private hospitals boast efficiency, comfort, and immediacy, but only for those who can afford it

As Durbanville business owners, my husband and Iare increasingly concerned about the growingdisorder outside abottlestore on Chenoweth Street

Largegroupsofmen –both homeless individuals and workers–regularlygather theretodrinkonthe pavements.This bottlestore appears to attractstreet peopleand after-work drinkers who consume alcohol immediately outside the premises.

Theresultisanareathatfeelsunsafefor residents andcustomers.

On weekends especially,the crowds become disruptive.Brokenbottles, shouting, public urination,and even defecation have become common. Pavements areoften littered with glass, andmanyshoppers have experienced harassment from intoxicated individuals.

This behaviour degrades theneighbourhood and harms localbusinessestryingtomaintain aclean, welcomingenvironment.

Durbanville already hasseveral bottlestoresin secure shopping centres where loitering andpublic drinking arenot tolerated.

It’sa dailystruggle…motorists driving, some speeding, down the yellow lane whilethe rest of us law-abidingdriverspatientlycrawl to ourdestination. Some do it under the pretenceofturning left at the next robot,evenifthe next robot is 500m away,only to shoot straightoverthe intersection from the left turning lane

Othersmakethe left turn, but shoot through the hospital andshopping centre’sparking areastojoin Okavangoagain further up the road. What theydon’t realise–ormaybe they’re justtoo selfish to care –isthey’re makeanexisting trafficjam even worse. Thesemotorists maketaxidrivers look like angels
