“The project is being run in collaboration withHop Haven, a registerednon-profit organisation, and focuses on catching, sterilising and safely relocating the surviving rabbits,” she says.

“Afterdiscussing thesituation within a community WhatsApp group, we learned that Hop Havenhad access to safe, private farms where the rabbits could be relocated to.The cemetery andsurrounding public areas cannotprotectthem from people whomay harm them, dogs, traffic, ongoingbreedingand future intervention. For that reason,webelieve relocation is thesafestlong-term option,” Basson says.
Hop Havenisalso able to assist with sterilisation bookings through the Animal Anti-Cruelty League(AACL) at reduced welfare rates, makingitpossible to help morerabbitsresponsibly.
RAFFLETURNEDCONCERNINTOACTION
“Our project’s first fundraising raffle received an incredible response from the Durbanville community. Residentsbought tickets, donated,shared social media posts and helped spreadawareness of the rabbits’ situation.
To date, 31 bunnies have been rescued throughthe project,” adds Caitlin Labuschagne, founder and owner of Hop Haven, who started the fundraising raffle.
“The fundsraised helped cover essential costs suchassterilisation, transport, food, temporary fostering andrelocation. Every ticket represented more than an entry into acompetition. It helped move rabbits out of danger andinto asaferfuture.”We would like to extend ourheartfelt thanks to everyperson, rescue organisation, foster carer,volunteer andsupporter who has contributed to the project so far.
“The response from the community has been overwhelming. Seeing people come together to help these animals has given us hopeand made it possible to save so many bunniessofar. We could not have reached this pointwithout thiswonderful community, and we would like to urge them to keep the momentum going,” Labuschagne says.

“Fundraising is notthe only challenge. The rescue teamisalso racing against the colony’s breedingcycle.
“Femalerabbitscan fall pregnant again very soon after givingbirth, and with an estimated 150 feral rabbits in the colony, thenumbers can quickly grow.
“Since catching began at the start of June, volunteers have already found two nests with youngbunnies. Within about 12 weeks, those young rabbitscan begin breedingtoo. This is why female rabbits are beingprioritised for catching and sterilisationwherever possible,” she says.
“Each rabbit is carefully caught and assessedbefore being sterilised. After surgery, they recoverintemporary foster carebefore being relocated to a safe environmentwhere they can live together away from the risks they faced in Durbanville

“Many of the cemetery rabbitsare feral or semi-feral andare notused to living as household pets. Some may also have been abandoned or previously harmed by people. For these rabbits,asecure farm environment with minimal human interference is often the kindest and most suitable option.
“Thereare,however, some rabbitswho appear to have been recently dumped or whoactively seek human interaction. Duringthe foster phase, volunteers spend timewith them andassess whether they may be suited to life as apet.
“We currently have onesuch bunny in foster care: abeautiful black-and-white boy whohas been sterilised but has not yetbeen releasedonthe farm. We are taking timetosee whether he would enjoy life as apet or whether he would be happier joininghis friends at the farm,” Labuschagnesays

“The rabbits’ welfare remains the priority. If arabbit appears better suited to aloving home, we will try to give that bunny the opportunity. However,rescues are already full and many domestic rabbitsare waiting for homes, so adoption spaces must be used carefully.
“If any of the cemetery bunnies are placed up for adoption, all adoptions will go through Hop Haven, including the necessary home checks and education around proper rabbit care,”she says.

Through years of rescue work, Labuschagne from Hop Haven has built relationships with other rescue networks and bunny lovers, says Basson.
“Through theseconnections, two safe farm spaces have been offered for the Durbanville rabbits. Bothlocations are managed by people who care deeply about the safetyand welfare of the colony. To protect the bunnies and respect the privacy of the farm owners, the exact relocation sites will not be shared publicly. This helps prevent the rabbits from being disturbed, removed, harmed or placed at risk again.
“Every time we visit one of the farms, it warms our hearts to see the bunnies out on the grass, safe and free. No more breeding, no more cruelty at the hands of humans, and no more fear.”

Therescue team hopes the community will continue supporting the project by buying raffle tickets, donating, and sharing the campaign.
“The public is also urged never to abandon unwanted domestic rabbits in cemeteries, parks, fields or publicspaces. Domestic rabbitsoften struggle to survive after being dumped and may reproduce rapidly, become injured, starve or fall victim to predators and human cruelty.
“Anyone who can no longer carefor a rabbit should contact areputable rabbit rescue for assistance,” Basson urges.
“The progress so far shows what can happen when acommunity comes together with compassion and ashared purpose. A total of 31 bunnies are now on their way to safer lives, but the project still needs help to reach the rabbitsleft behind.

The Western Cape EducationDepartment has expanded its holiday security supportfrom 424 schools lastwinter to 453 high-risk schools ahead of the 2026 June-July holidays, allocating R11,99 million for holiday securityinthe 2026/27 financialyear.

future. We urge communities to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activity to the police or the Safe Schools Hotline on 0800 45 46 47. A watchful community can defeat even the most determined criminals,” saidPeter Johnson, DA provincial spokesperson on education.
Johnson added that he would be writing to the office of the provincial commissioner to obtain aclear understanding of what plans the police has in place to protect schools during the June holidays.
“As places of learning increasingly become targets for vandalism and theft, visible policing and proactive interventions are essential. Communities and schools cannot fight thisbattle alone, and the police must play itsfull role in safeguarding our children’s futures. Criminals and vandals must be caught and successfully prosecuted to ensure the safetyofour schools,”hesaid.

Whilethe righttoprotest is afundamental part of ademocratic society, it is important that these demonstrationsremain peaceful,lawful, and constructive.
In recent weeks, severalprotests have drawnpublic attention, particularlyinareas such as Parklands, Claremont, and SeaPoint. Thesegatheringshave sparkedstrong debatewithin communities, with some residents expressing concern about the messagingbehind certainmovements, while others feel that protest action is the onlyway to have their voices heard.
What is becoming increasingly clearisthatmanyof thesedemonstrations arerooted in deeper socio-economic frustrations. Rising electricitytariffs, transport costs, housing shortages, andunemployment continue to placepressure on households already struggling to makeends meet

While thousands of Capetonians will lace up theirwalking shoes forthis year’s Blisters for Bread fun walk, volunteers willbehardat work behind the scenes ensuring the event runs smoothly.
For over 40 years, the Lions Club have given their time as marshals at the annual fundraising event, which raises money for the PeninsulaSchool Feeding Association (PSFA)

Blisters for Bread, one of Cape Town’s most iconic charity walks, hasbeen fighting childhood hunger for58 years. This year the event will take placeon Sunday 16 August and with only 10 000 entries available, participants can choose between a5km or 10km route along the Sea PointPromenade.
Entries cost R125, enough to provide breakfast and lunch to 23 children for a day.
The 10km walk starts at 07:30 and the 5km route at 08:00, with medals and refreshments provided to all participants. Each year around 130 Lions Club members take up positions along the route guiding participants, ensuring theirsafety andhanding out medals to those who

successfully complete the race.
Former Lions Club president John Houston,who has personally volunteered at theevent for 30 years, said supporting Blisters for Bread alignsperfectly with oneofthe organisation’s coremissions.
“One ofthe Lions Club’s pillars is hunger relief, andBlisters for Bread falls perfectly into that category,” he said.
Houstonsaid members willingly volunteer their time because they understand the impact the event has on children facing food insecurity.
“Every cent raisedgoesdirectly to feeding schoolchildren. Ienjoy attending theevent and assistingpeople. Ibelieve it’s for aworthy cause,”hesaid.
Despitethe early starts andlonghours on their feet, Houstonsaid the atmosphere makesthe experience worthwhile.
“We do it voluntarily anditisfun.
There is agreat sense of camaraderie and satisfactioninknowing you’re helpingto make adifference.”
The Lion’sClub is alsoencouraging community members who would liketo get involved andserve as marshals in future events to contact the organisation.
