Analert member of the public helped bring a suspected FacebookMarketplace scammertojustice after spotting the red flagsjust in time. The incident has cast afresh spotlight on the alarming rise of social-mediadriven commercial crimeacross the WesternCape, where thousands of cases are being recorded each quarter.
The Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) of Titanium Securitas in Brackenfell recently assisted in preventinga suspected Facebook Marketplace scam resulting in the detention of asuspect who allegedly defrauded at least 22 victims in the region using fake banking notifications and fraudulent proof of payment.
The incident began when a Durbanville resident advertised aflat-screen TV for sale on
Facebook Marketplace and agreed to acash-on-collection deal witha buyer. After nothaving arrived over an hour later, the buyer changed the arrangement, claiming he would makean instantEFT while sendinga driver to collect the TV
“Suspicious ofthe change,the seller intentionally provided incorrect banking details to test the payment. Shortly thereafter, both apaymentSMS andproof of payment were received, both of which were later confirmed tobe fraudulent,” says Titanium spokespersonKobusKotze
The CPU members were alerted and responded to the seller’s house where they detainedthe suspect. Investigation revealed thathehad allegedly posed as an inDrive driver andusedsoftware togenerate fake bank SMS
notificationsand fraudulent proof of payment screenshots.
It was further established that at least22other victims in the region had reportedly fallen prey to thesame scam. Durbanville police attended thescene and took thesuspect into custody.

Amongthe most prevalentschemes targeting sellers is thefake payment or overpayment scam. In atypical scenario, awould-be buyer agrees to purchasean item but claims to be unable to collect it in person. They proceed to send a counterfeit proof of payment, often made to appear as though it originates from alegitimate bank transfer or payment platform. In many cases, thefraudster then claims to have accidentally overpaid, urging theseller to refund the difference via an instant payment service before the seller discovers that no money was ever received
Red flags include buyers who offer more than the asking price without negotiation, show no interest in bargaining, or insist on arrangingdeliverythrough athirdparty courier.
Buyers, too, are far from immune. Advance fee and non-delivery scams pose asignificant threat, with fraudsters listing high-demand goodssuch as vehicles, smartphones and event tickets at conspicuously low prices, only to request an upfront deposit to secureorcourierthe item.
Once payment is made, they vanish without atrace. Common warning signs include aseller’s reluctancetomeet in person, pressure to pay through
untraceable channels suchasgift cards or wire transfers, and vague explanations aboutbeing outoftown or outofthe country.
Experts advisekeeping transactions localwherever possible,meeting in a public space, ideally outside apolice station and usingcashfor in-person exchanges. All communication should remainwithin Facebook Messenger, as scammers frequently attempt to migrate conversations to WhatsApp in order to sidestep Marketplace’s built-in tracking systems.

Luani Bekker, skoolhoof van Leef Kidz, verduidelik dat die skool elke jaar 'n beroepsweek hou en dat hulle hierdie jaar 'n beroep wou uitlig wat dikwels min erkenning ontvang —veral gedurende die koue wintermaande. Die skool het besluit om die vullisverwyderaars te bederf met nie-bederfbare produkte as teken vanwaardering vir hulle harde werk.

Die kleuters is eers bewus gemaak van die vullisverwyderaars se belangrike rol in die gemeenskap. Aangesien die kindershulle weekliksbuite die skool hoor en sien, was dit 'n natuurlike keuse. Die skool het 'n beroep op ouers gedoen om skenkings saam skool toe te stuur, waarna die kleuters self die sakke help pak het. Vra jy die een hoekom, is hul antwoord: "vir 'n beter toekoms". Die ander lê klem op ons land se swaar geskiedenis. Maar uit 'n jongeling se oëisnie een van hierdie geldige antwoorde nie.
Nie een van hulle is tydensapartheid gebore nie. Nie een van hulle hetdaardeur geleef nie. Diegeskiedenis iswel vir baie van hulle belangrik, maar ditwordnie meer gesien as 'n geldige rede om 'n dag op te gee om by die stembus tou te staannie Hul besluite word geneem volgens wat hulle vandag hoor en sien.
Nou, wat dan van 'n beter toekoms?
