he future of cycling at the Bellville Velodrome is again under the spotlight after the GOOD Party raised concerns about plans to remove its indoor cycling track. GOOD secretary-general and Cape Town mayoral candidate Brett Herron on Sunday 9 August questioned whether the planned cycling facility at Vygieskraal Stadium would adequately replace the Bellville track. The City of Cape Town announced in April that the Bellville Athletics Track and Velodrome precinct was set for a major private-sector redevelopment. Plans include upgrading the athletics track and transforming the Velodrome

WHAT IS PLANNED FOR BELLVILLE? The City’s Mayco greenlit the proposed redevelopment in April, with the recommendation then due to go to Council for final approval. The project stems from a tender awarded in 2009 for the development of the 11,47 ha
precinct. Under the proposal, the City will retain ownership of the athletics track and Velodrome. The developer will lease the facilities for an initial 50 years, with a conditional option to renew for another 10 years. The developer will also purchase identified vacant erven around the facilities for mixed-use development and will be responsible for upgrading and operating the athletics track and Velodrome as event venues. The planned indoor arena would accommodate approximately 14 000 to 18 000 spectators. The athletics track would receive a modern, competitioncompliant surface, while public access would be retained.

VYGIESKRAAL IDENTIFIED AS CYCLING HUB The City previously said it would not be sustainable to retain the existing cycling track as part of the Velodrome redevelopment. It said this followed a city-wide cycling feasibility study that looked at demand and how best to provide cycling facilities sustainably. Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone was subsequently identified as a central hub for cycling. In April, the City said it aimed to carry out a R20 million upgrade at Vygieskraal during the 2026-'27 financial year, including the reinstatement and upgrade of a cycling track. TO PAGE 4

he City of Cape Town has dismissed claims that it plans to hit motorists with congestion charges, with Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas saying such measures are off the table until Cape Town’s public transport is up to scratch, and that current national legislation doesn’t even allow for it. This comes after Cape Independence Party (CAPEXIT) last week slammed the City’s proposed Travel Demand Management (TDM) Strategy as an Orwellian dystopia, warning it would punish motorists with higher parking fees, congestion charges and financial penalties simply for driving. In his council speech in the July sitting, the party’s leader Jack Miller said the City’s strategy would burden motorists with unnecessary costs and restrictions. The strategy, approved by Council last month after a public participation process in October and November 2025, proposes measures to reduce traffic congestion, commuting times and carbon emissions. Miller argued the proposal would restrict the movement of Cape Town drivers rather than address the root causes of traffic. “We are presented with a strategy to control and manage the demand that Capetonians have to travel. And of course, the answer is various forms of punishment and more taxation,” he said in his speech. He referred to what is called “pricing measures” listed in the document that proposes to make parking more expensive for motorists driving during peak traffic times, and to penalise drivers for driving by themselves in their own car. “How exactly the City intends to implement these policies one can only imagine would require fleets of CCTV cameras tracking and monitoring the facial biometrics of drivers, counting the number of people in each car, and calculating how much to fine them at the end of the month depending on what hours of the day they were driving,” he said. “If the City really wants to decongest the roads, they can stop pushing high density low cost housing into every open crack, corner and crevice of Cape Town,

and spending 75% of our budget on free handouts that invite economic migrants to come get a free house, free electricity and free water, and of course add to the overflowing traffic and collapsing water and sanitation infrastructure.” ONLY IN THEORY In response, Mayco member for the Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said to TygerBurger: “A congestion charge is not something the City is introducing now, or in the near future. Also, current national legislation does not make provision for such a system.” Quintas said congestion charging is “theoretical” and only to be considered once an effective, reliable and wellintegrated public transport system and enabling legislation are in place. “A congestion charge is mentioned as one of several long-term possibilities that may be considered only after we have achieved our primary goal of providing a reliable, efficient, and city-wide public transport network that serves as a viable alternative to private cars. We are a long way off,” Quintas told TygerBurger. “As for parking fees, the City charges R4,80 for every 15 minutes for the use of on-street parking bays in areas where the demand for parking is high. These are mostly business districts. Parking management ensures a turnover of parking bays and prevents any one motorist from occupying a parking space for extended periods.” The TDM strategy document states: “Beyond alleviating congestion, it contributes to reduced local emissions, enhanced urban mobility through increased use of public transport, walking and cycling.” It adds: “As public transport services improve, an investigation to understand the best suited scheme for Cape Town could be considered.”
Cape Town libraries recover R4.7m in overdue items The City of Cape Town said on Tuesday 4 August that their libraries have received a total of 37 422 overdue items back during its Fine Free Weeks. According to the City the cost of the overdue items was R4 767 836,51. “The number proves just how popular our Fine Free Weeks are. It is an opportunity for patrons to return books and other items without paying a fine for late returns. “Returning books allows others to also experience reading their favourite book. Our libraries have so much to offer, and I would like to invite residents to visit their local library to enjoy a safe reading space and so much more,” said Francine Higham, Mayco member for community services and health. Over the course of a year, the City’s Libraries and Information Services held four successful Fine Free Weeks – the last being held during the recent school holiday break which ran from 29 June to 4 July. This week also saw the return of 10 300 items valued at R1 393 920, the City said. Library patrons also returned 12 442 items during the National Fine Free Week in March earlier this year, the City said.

Lara Brand se insameling het gehelp om ’n leerder se skoolfonds te betaal, terwyl die projek ook bygedra het tot die verspreiding van kospakkies aan gesinne wat deur droogte geraak word. Lara sê sy het Droogtehulp gekies omdat sy ’n projek wou aanpak wat ’n werklike verskil in mense se lewens maak. “Sonder boere is daar niks nie. Die grootste hoogtepunt was om te sien hoe die gemeenskap saamgestaan het om mense in nood te help. Ek het besef dat dit wat

“Ek het geleer hoe belangrik samewerking is en dat mense baie meer kan bereik wanneer hulle saamwerk.” — Lara Brand ons as alledaagse benodigdhede beskou vir daardie gesinne soos luukshede voel.” Hoewel sy trots was om die geld in te samel, sê Lara die impak daarvan het eers werklik ingesink toe sy hoor hoe dit aangewend sou word. “Dit voel ongelooflik om te weet dat ek ’n verskil in iemand se lewe kon maak. Toe ek hoor dat ek R5 000 ingesamel het en dat daardie geld kon help om ’n leerder se skoolfonds te betaal, het dit eers regtig ingesink watter verskil ek in daardie familie se lewe kon maak.” Volgens haar het die ervaring haar met groot vreugde en trots gevul. “Om te weet dat daardie geld gebruik word om ander te help, het my met baie vreugde en trots gevul. Dit was ’n herinnering dat ’n mens, ongeag jou ouderdom, ’n betekenisvolle verskil kan maak.” Lara het vir die projek saam met Burre Burger van Droogtehulp gewerk. Sy vertel dat die organisasie reeds van kleins af deel van haar lewe was. “Ek en my pa het van kleintyd af altyd daardie plaatjies gekoop wat ’n oom by die winkel verkoop het, waarvan al die geld direk na Droogtehulp gegaan het.” Die geleentheid om saam met Burger te werk het volgens haar natuurlik ontstaan. “Dit het ontstaan deur ’n gedeelde passie om mense in nood te help.” Sy sê die ervaring het haar gewys hoe belangrik samewerking is. “Ek het geleer dat ’n mens baie meer kan bereik wanneer individue,
ondernemings en organisasies saamwerk. Dit het my ook geleer hoe waardevol goeie beplanning, kommunikasie en gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid is.” Vir Lara was die grootste hoogtepunt nie die geld wat ingesamel is nie, maar die gemeenskap se bereidwilligheid om saam te staan om mense in nood te help. “Dit was ongelooflik om te beleef hoe elke skenking, groot of klein, bygedra het om hoop en ondersteuning aan ander te bring.” Sy sê dit was ook besonders om haar Springbokprojek — die hoogste toekenning in Landsdiens — te gebruik om ander se lewens te verbeter. “Dit is ’n ervaring wat ek altyd sal koester.” Lara se inisiatief het ook lof van die stigter van Droogtehulp, Burre Burger, ontlok. In ’n plasing op sosiale media het hy gesê hy is “trots op hierdie jong dame” nadat sy R5 000 ingesamel het om ’n leerder se skoolfonds te help betaal, asook om kospakkies vir verspreiding aan gesinne in nood moontlik te maak. Hy het sy plasing afgesluit met die vraag: “Wie gaan soos Lara wees vandag?” Vir ander jongmense wat graag ’n verskil in hul gemeenskappe wil maak, het Lara ’n eenvoudige, maar kragtige boodskap. “Moenie ooit dink jy is te jonk om ’n verskil te maak nie. Dit gaan nie altyd oor donasies of finansiële bydraes nie. Deur iets kleins te doen, soos om ’n tannie met haar inkopies te help of jou bejaarde buurman se gras te sny, kan jy reeds iemand se lewe aanraak.” Sy glo die belangrikste is om met die regte ingesteldheid te dien. “Om ’n verskil te maak gaan nie oor erkenning nie, maar om ander se lewens te verbeter. As jongmense het ons meer invloed as wat ons soms besef; ons het die vermoë om hoop te bring waar dit die nodigste is.”

is nie elke dag dat 'n verpleegster by 'n Clickskliniek die geleentheid kry om 'n baba, nogal 'n brugbaba, te vang nie. Die meetsnoere het vir die jong ma, Lisa Qhuzu van Kraaifontein, 'n werknemer by Pick n Pay in Pinehurst, ook net reg geval dat dit juis Tanya de Beer was wat op Maandag 3 Augustus die dag by die Clicks-kliniek werksaam was. De Beer is 'n geregistreerde verpleegter en ook 'n gekwalifiseerde vroedvrou met kraamsaal-ervaring. " 'n Vroedrou is gekwalifiseerd om ondersteuning, sorg en raad aan vroue en hul gesinne tydens swangerskappe, die geboorteproses en na die geboorte te gee," verduidelik sy. Volgens De Beer was sy die namiddag op pad uit die kliniek uit toe een van die werknemers van Pick n Pay, wat in dieselfde sentrum is, haar vra om met 'n noodgeval te kom help. "Toe ek daar aankom, sien ek een van die werknemers van Pick n Pay is in kraam. Ek het by haar gebly om haar te help en te ondersteun totdat die ambulans daar aankom," vertel sy.
Die nuwe mamma, Lisa Qhuzu (regs), is hier met haar babadogtertjie by Samantha Fredericks Qatar, bestuurder by Pick n Pay Pinehurst.
KLINIEKSUSTER HELP MET GEBOORTE "Maar ná 'n paar minute het ek besef Lisa se kraamproses vorder vinnig. Haar kollegas het haar na 'n gebied toe geneem waar sy op die ambulans kon wag, en ons kon voorberei vir as die baba dalk sou arriveer voor die ambulans daar aankom," vertel sy. "Haar kollegas het haar so mooi ondersteun terwyl ek kalm en gefokus gebly het om die klein lyfie veilig in die wereld in te bring.
"Die Here het my baie rustig gehou om te doen wat nodig was en toe is 'n pragtige babameisietjie voetjies eerste gebore. "Hoewel dit nie die eerste baba was wat ek gevang het nie, was dit 'n wonderlike ervaring; dit was vir my 'n groot voorreg om daar te kon wees om te help," sê sy. Die baba is Jenete Samantha gedoop. Haar eerste naam "Jenete" beteken "paradys" in Arabies, en haar tweede naam is genoem na Samantha Qatar, Pick n Pay Pinehurst se bestuurder, wat haar ook met die geboorte bygestaan het.
KOMMENTAAR OOR DIE STAD KAAPSTAD SE BYGEWERKTE BELEID OOR BYDRAES 2026 Die Stad se eenheid vir tegniese vennootskappe (TPU) is tans besig met die bywerking van die beleid oor bydraes aan die Stad Kaapstad (beleidnommer 41636) wat oorspronklik in 2015 opgestel is. Meer oor die konsepbeleid Die Stad Kaapstad is besig om die beleid oor bydraes, wat in 2015 goedgekeur is, te hersien en by te werk. Die hersiene beleid verskaf ’n duidelike raamwerk vir hoe die Stad bydraes vanaf eksterne partye ontvang, evalueer en bestuur. Dit sluit tegniese bystand, toelaes en skenkings in. Aktiwiteite wat buite die omvang van die beleid val, soos borgskappe en nuwe inisiatiewe, word ook uiteengesit. Die bygewerkte beleid stem ooreen met huidige wetgewing, vereistes vir regeringsbestuur en die Stad se prosedures. Hierdie hersiening word gedoen omdat die bestaande beleid nie meer die kompleksiteit van bydraes wat deur die Stad ontvang word, weerspieël nie. Nuwe prosesse is oor die afgelope dekade bekendgestel, wat teenstrydighede tussen die beleid en onderliggende prosedures skep. Die bygewerkte beleid vereenvoudig prosesse, verbeter deursigtigheid, versterk regeringsbestuur en maak dit makliker vir Stadsamptenare, inwoners, besighede en ontwikkelingsvennote om die bestuur van bydraes te verstaan.

STORIES AGTER KWILTS Sy het 'n paar van haar eie kwilts saamgebring en die stories daaragter met gaste gedeel. Meyer het in 1977 kwiltwerk begin doen, en het sedert 1987 begin klasgee in laslap- en kwiltwerk. In 1996 het sy as beoordelaar gekwalifiseer en het al verskeie kwiltkompetisies in SuidAfrika, Zimbabwe en Dubai, asook Namibië se eerste kwiltkompetisie, beoordeel. Sy het die sonderlinge status van meesterkwilter. Meyer het in 2022 'n Pro Dedicate-toekenning van die Suid-Afrikaanse Kwiltgilde ontvang. Van haar werk is al plaaslik, asook internasionaal, uitgestal. Sy was al die voorsitter van die Goeie Hoop Kwiltgilde in die Kaap, die Jakaranda Kwiltgilde in Pretoria, en is tans die voorsitter van die Outeniekwa Kwiltgilde in George. LEEF VOORT IN HARTE Linda Coetzee, wat die inisiatief geneem het om die gilde te stig, was ook 'n eregas. "Die kinkels, kreukels en
kwinkslae van die Kaapse Kwiltgenot leef voort in baie harte en huise en die kwilts maak harte bly," het Coetzee gesê. Volgens haar hoef SuidAfrikaanse kwilters vir niemand terug te staan nie. Die gilde het selfs 'n brief van gelukwensing uit Montana in die VSA ontvang van nog 'n stigterslid, Helena Myburgh. Sy het vertel van die projek wat die gilde jare gelede aangepak het, naamlik om deurnag kwiltwerk op aflostye te doen. 'n Paar van die voltooide dekens is daarna aan die Durbanville-kinderhuis geskenk. STIKDAG GEHOU Die Kaapse Kwiltgenot hou ook elke jaar 'n stikdag, waartydens Little Quilts of Love gemaak word. Dit is klein kwiltjies wat geskenk word as 'n blyk van troos aan ouers wat hul pasgebore baba verloor het. 'n Paar lede was die gelukkige wenners van gelukstrekkings van onder meer geskenkbewyse, geskenk deur Textile City en Fabric Friends in Bellville, asook nuttige geskenkpakke vir kwilters, geskenk deur Bernina Northern Suburbs. Die oggend is afgesluit met lede wat gespog het met hoe die kwilts vorder waaraan hulle tans werk. Die voltooide Little Quilts of Love is ook vertoon. Waarom word die beleid bygewerk? Die beleid sal na verwagting administratiewe vertragings verminder, voldoening versterk, wetlike en finansiële risiko’s minimaliseer, en samewerking tussen die Stad en organisasies wat munisipale programme en projekte wil ondersteun, verbeter. Die hersiene beleid gee ’n duidelike uiteensetting van: • wat ’n bydrae behels; • watter aktiwiteite buite die omvang van die beleid val; • hoe bydraes versoek, geëvalueer en aanvaar kan word; • hoe bydraes met die Stad se prioriteite en wetgewing ooreen moet stem; en • waar verdere leiding deur middel van onderliggende prosedures en riglyne beskikbaar is. Herron said a due diligence briefing presented to Council in June described the planned Vygieskraal facility as a “moderate speed outdoor municipal cycling track” intended for recreational and training use. He argued that this would not be comparable to the indoor cycling track at the Bellville Velodrome. “The truth is that Cape Town will not get another Olympicstandard velodrome; once converted into a concert venue, it is gone,” Herron said. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis previously described the proposed arrangement as a “win-win scenario”. He said private-sector investment would allow the Bellville facilities to be upgraded and maintained for athletes, schools and residents in a way
the City and ratepayers could not achieve through municipal funding alone. The City also said funds raised from the transaction would go towards upgrades to regional sporting facilities elsewhere in Cape Town. The Velodrome and athletics track themselves would remain under public ownership, while identified vacant erven surrounding the facilities would be sold for mixed-use development. TygerBurger has approached the City for comment on GOOD’s latest concerns and asked whether the planned Vygieskraal track will accommodate the same level of competitive cycling as the existing Bellville facility. The City was also asked to confirm the current approval status of the redevelopment. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

And a few little paws may have found their match. “You can scroll past a picture, but when you walk in and touch them, it is difficult to walk past,” Diedricks said. IT STARTED WITH WHAT SHE SAW Diedricks’ journey into animal rescue started about two-and-a-half years ago. While travelling through Kuils River to write exams, she regularly saw pregnant dogs, puppies and animals suffering from mange and illness. She found herself seeing the same need each time she passed through the area. “I literally prayed and said, ‘Just show me what to do, because I can’t handle this anymore’.” So she started doing what she could. She asked for donations, collected food and deworming treatments and began dropping them off in the community. “I would pass there after work and drop off a few bags of food.” Eventually, people began approaching her with puppies they could not keep. “That is how the puppy thing started.” What started with a few bags of food grew into Loving Paws Rescue. HELPING WHERE SHE CAN Diedricks said her experience has also taught her not to judge families who may be struggling to care for their pets. “Some of them do love animals, but they just can’t afford it,” she said. important part of the work, particularly in communities where unwanted litters can quickly add to the number of animals needing homes. “It is an ongoing thing. You think you have your area covered and then, when you look again, there is another pregnant mommy or a mommy with babies.” For Diedricks, another part of changing this is teaching children how to treat animals.

Nagmerrie-ervaring met Women who shape our stories Sassa-aansoek THINKING OUT LOUD
On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women marched through the streets of Pretoria with a simple yet powerful message: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo — you strike a woman, you strike a rock”. This happened long before I was born. I was fortunate enough to be raised by another remarkable woman: my own mother. She taught me resilience, compassion and quiet strength, not through speeches, but through the example she set every single day. Women like her, and the thousands who marched before her, helped shape the world we have the privilege of living in today. I say this without taking anything away from the brave men and fathers who also have a special place in our lives. But Sunday belonged to the women who have carried families, communities, businesses and our country forward, often without fanfare and always with extraordinary courage.

By ontvangs word 'n papier oor die toonbank geskuif met al die nodige dokumente afgemerk wat ek benodig. Nadat ek die amptenaar ingelig het ek wil aansoek doen om 'n toelae, word ek aangesê om Maandag 21 Junie terug te kom. Let wel, net 'n handjievol mense het in daardie stadium gewag om gehelp te word. Op 21 Junie daag ek om 07:00 op en gaan na die ingang waar 'n sekuriteitsbeampte my voorkeer. Ek wys hom die papier wat ek die vorige Vrydag van 'n beampte gekry het en word toegelaat om op 'n stoel by die ingang te sit. Tussen halfnege en nege-uur word die aansoekers ingelig dat slegs diegene met 'n afspraak gehelp gaan word. Die res moet afsprake maak. Weer eens terug in 'n ry vir 'n afspraak. Tydens my beurt om 'n afspraak te maak, lig ek die beampte in dat ons nuwe aansoekers onkundig is met die prosedure en sy my al die vorige Vrydag van 'n afspraakdatum kon voorsien het of ingelig het dat ek eers een moet maak. Die afspraak word toe gemaak vir Maandag 20 Julie. Kwart voor ses neem ek my plek in die ry in — wat amper strek tot by Ou Paarlweg. Tussen die gesels deur verneem ek dat party mense daar geslaap het of al van 03:00 gearriveer het in die hoop om gehelp te
word. Teen 06:20 word ons ingedeel in drie groepe — navrae, vingerafdrukke en laastens, aansoekers. Aansoekers moet binne gaan sit en hul beurt afwag om 'n nommer te kry. Die ander twee groepe moet buite in die koue sit en wag. Teen omstreeks 15:00 besef ons dat ons nie voor 16:00, wat toemaaktyd is, gehelp gaan word nie. Aangesien ek Vrydag nie weer vir 'n hele dag daar kan sit nie, sal ek maar nog 'n tydjie sonder Sassa se inkomste moet klaarkom en sal my kinders hul moeder vir nog 'n rukkie moet onderhou. ‘n Sassa-aansoek is 'n absolute nagmerrie met 'n stelsel wat nie 100% werk nie, asook kantore wat onderbeman is. Dalk, as die ministers 'n slag uit hul aircon-kantore en luukse voertuie kom en 'n slag saam met Sassa-aansoekers in die donker, koue en soms reën in rye kom staan, sal hulle besef waardeur applikante vir 'n aalmoes moet gaan om darem vir 'n gedeelte van die maand te kan eet. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to subcouncil manager 3, Roxanne Moses, for her assistance during the recent upgrade of the Theo Marais Park boundary wall. The project initially caused unnecessary concern and frustration among residents due to shortcomings in public participation and communication. It was at this point that Roxanne's intervention proved invaluable. She took the time to meet with residents, listened to our concerns, and facilitated engagement between the project manager, the ward councillor Anthony Bernadie, and the community. Her calm, professional approach helped restore confidence in the process and ensured that all parties worked together towards a practical and mutually acceptable solution. As a result, the necessary repairs were completed promptly and efficiently, leaving residents satisfied with the outcome. Throughout the process, Roxanne demonstrated professionalism, responsiveness, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving the community. Thank you Sixty60 driver for you kindness during break down I wanted to share a small but meaningful moment that reminded me just how much kindness still exists in our community. Last night I broke down on Jip de Jager near Loevenstein and found myself standing outside my car waiting for friends to come and help. Out of nowhere, a Checkers Sixty60 driver pulled over. He had already finished his shift and was heading home, but when he noticed me, he actually turned
back to come check on me. He asked if I was okay and when I explained that help was on the way, he still offered to stay with me until my friends arrived. I was honestly so touched that someone would take time out of their evening like that – not just to stop, but to genuinely care. I even worried that I might be delaying him, only for him to tell me he was already done for the day. What stayed with me most was what he said: “We
need to help one another.” Simple words, but he had already shown exactly what that means through his actions. It was such a powerful reminder that there are still good people out there — and that people, at their core, are good. Addictive taxation highlights is an economic feedback loop in which governments become financially dependent on revenues generated from systemic revenue collected by any and all means. Afrikaans talent shines Afrikaans public speaking was taken to new heights with the Nou Praat Jy! national competition held at Curro Durbanville High School recently. The second edition of Nou Praat Jy! was held on 30 July, drawing school teams from as far afield as Graaff-Reinet, Lutzville and Porterville. According to the organisers, Joline de Klerk and Maritsa Smit, both Afrikaans teachers at Curro Durbanville, the competition speaks to something bigger than the day itself. “In a world crowded with opinions and noise, the ability to think for yourself and to express those thoughts clearly and confidently matters more than ever. Competitions like Nou Praat Jy! give learners exactly that opportunity in a language as rich and diverse as the country in which it is spoken,” De Klerk said. “What makes this competition different is simple: We ask participants to speak in the Afrikaans that lives within them, not the Afrikaans found in a textbook,” she said.

Nasionale netbalaksie by Stellenberg TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS Die SPAR Nasionale Netbalkampioenskap het van 5 tot 11 Augustus by die Hoërskool Stellenberg plaasgevind, met senior- en o.21-distrikspanne van oor Suid-Afrika heen wat sake op die baan uitgespook het. Botswana en Namibië het vanjaar ook as uitnodigingspanne aan vriendskaplike
wedstryde in die Senior A-afdeling deelgeneem. Die jaarlikse kampioenskap is ’n belangrike plek waar spelers hul talent kan wys, met talle huidige en voormalige SPAR Proteas wat oor die jare daar 'n indruk gemaak het. Die toernooi het ook ondersteuners en gaste na Stellenberg gelok.

Teen crowned world champ
LISE BEYERS 16-year-old Reddam House Durbanville learner has become the under-17 pentathlon world champion and world-record holder. Tatiana Thomatos won gold at the 2026 UIPM Pentathlon u-17 World Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, with a finish just two points ahead of her nearest rival. Competing against 158 athletes from 32 countries, Thomatos scored 1 463 points, surpassing the previous world record of 1 452 points set by Egypt's Farida Khalil at the 2025 championships in Johannesburg. The Grade 10 learner began strongly in the fencing discipline, finishing second, before performances in the obstacle race

Thomatos combined calm shooting with a courageous run to cross the finish line first, ahead of Türkiye's Tulya Kesebir in second and Great Britain's Jemima Chetwood in bronze. The victory continues a remarkable rise through the international ranks for Thomatos, who won the inaugural u-15 Tetrathlon World Championship in Guatemala in 2024 and earned individual bronze at the u-17 World Championships in Johannesburg in 2025.

Back-to-back champions
D
urbanville Cricket Club was again crowned the back-to-back Premier League champions at the annual Western Province Cricket Associations Awards on Saturday, 7 August in the Presidential Suite at Newlands. The trophies the club received for the 2025/26 season are Third Division B and A winners, Premier League winners, Club Cricket Most Sporting team and WP Club of the Year. They won the Premier League four times in seven years and the home ground is Sports Way in Durbanville, featuring provincial-rated fields and the Ed Fivaz Main field. “We currently have eight men’s teams, two woman’s teams and two veterans’ teams. Our junior club is also the biggest in the WP with a membership that exceeds 220 juniors,” says Morne de Beer, club chairman, who accepted the trophies on behalf of the club. The annual prize giving of the club was end of March and the club's awards evening is held soon after the seasons ends because some of their players leave for the United Kingdom to play cricket in the off-season. Durbanville has also won the CSA National T20 Community Cup in 2024. “Like in the 2024/25 the league was a tight affair between us, Rondebosch and Western Province Clubs. Our coach Seand Ackermann and captain Fritz de Beer have been sensational in their leadership

and guiding our Premier side to back-toback champions of the Premier league. Players of the club that have represented WP and the Proteas are Edward Moore, George Linde, Pieter Malan and Janneman Malan. Past WP representatives are Jody Lawrence and Janneman Malan, Pieter Malan represented Boland,” De Beer says. His message to the club's supporters: “Our recent achievements are the culmination of generations of members who have selflessly invested their time, effort, and passion into building a club and culture founded on friendship, enjoyment, and a shared love for cricket. Cricket is far more than a game. It is a platform where teammates become lifelong friends, where lasting memories are created, and where values such as camaraderie, respect, and belonging are nurtured.
NETBALLERS GET SECOND SHOT Nichole Breedt of Cape Town A during their match against Tshwane A on Saturday of the SPAR National Netball Championships that took place at Stellenberg High School from Thursday 6 to Tuesday 11 August. Cape Town lost this match 59-52, but following various other victories, went on to beat Mangaung A 68-53 in the playoffs on Monday. This set the home team up for a rematch against Tshwane A in the finals yesterday. At time of print the results were not yet available.
