SWIMMINGTOSHORE

Larsen managed to paddle to shore and ran to the lifeguards They rinsed and dressed his wounds before he drove himself to Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital He sustained multiple bite wounds to his right hand, upper arm, and both legs

Additionally, he received anti-rabies injections as a precaution

“The rabies shots are quite sore, they have to inject every single wound, even scrapes,” he said “I have three more sessions to complete The doctors told me it’s better to be safe than sorry, because rabies is fatal if untreated

“When approached for comment, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said he was aware of the Big Bay seal attack but had no further details

“I believe it was handled by emergency services and that the Department of Environment was investigating,” he said “We are not aware of any other recent incidents ”

Marine experts have previously cautioned that seals can become aggressive during breeding season They have urged beachgoers to keep a safe distance

“It was terrifying,” said Larsen “You do not expect to be attacked like that in the water , I am just grateful I made it out alive ”

SEALINGWASHINGASHORE

As seals continue to wash ashore on Bloubergstrand, Sunset Beach and Milnerton Beach, and attack surfers who now fear the waves, a two-day workshop was held last year to address the issue

The City of Cape Town in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation and Sea Search, partnered on an expert scientific workshop Some key findings, outcomes and agreements have been concluded TygerBurger reported on the rabies outbreak noted in seals (“Rabies detected in Cape Fur seals along Western Cape coast, warning issued”, 5 July 2024) after a Cape fur seal off the coast at Big Bay tested positive for rabies It died on 22 May 2024 and the laboratory results came in on 7 June 2024 The workshop focused on investigating the possible causes of the increase in the frequency of unusual and unprovoked Cape Fur Seal bites and aggression on recreational users in the Western Cape

In October 2024, the newspaper reported of a similiar incident last year ("Man bitten by seal at Big Bay amid rabies warnings", 28 October 2024) after man was bitten by a seal while swimming at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand The Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club reported that he sustained a minor wound and was advised to seek medical care The NSRI confirmed that authorities were notified and reminded beachgoers to be cautious around marine animals and to swim only at beaches protected by lifeguards

TygerBurger has reported of warnings advising the public to stay away from seals as far as possible before, particularly after a Cape Fur Seal off the coast at Big Bay has tested positive for rabies

CRITICALINFORMATIONONRABIES

Rabies is a serious and often fatal disease The rabies virus is spread to humans and other animals through contact with the saliva of infected animals Humans can be exposed to rabies through

bites, scratches or licks to wounds, grazes, broken skin, or to the lining of the mouth and nose by rabid animals

“The common signs and symptoms of rabies in people include discomfort or pain at the site of the (previous) wound, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting This rapidly progresses to signs of neurological dysfunction, which may include changed behaviour, confusion, and agitation People with rabies can also display hypersalivation, localised weakness and paralytic syndromes, which eventually progresses to coma and death,” the NICD says

Immediate medical attention following suspected rabies exposure is critical If no post-exposure prophylaxis is given, an infected person may start experiencing symptoms one to three months after exposure In rare cases, symptoms can develop after more than six months following an exposure

ADVICEFORSEALBITEVICTIMS

If you have been bitten by a seal, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation from a healthcare provider (general practitioner, clinic, public or private hospital) immediately

“The incident will be assessed for the necessity of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) This is irrespective of whether you previously received medical attention for the bite Rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin is available at strategic public hospitals, emergency centres at private hospitals, travel clinics and selected pharmacies,” the NICD says For bites from animals such as dogs, cats, mongooses, jackals or seals, follow these steps:

.Clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water, as soon as possible after the injury

.Visit a hospital emergency centre promptly for a medical assessment

.The need for PEP with rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin administration will be determined based on the category or nature of the bite, severity, and risk assessment for potential rabies exposure

.Avoid interacting with seals and other wild animals

.Ensure your pets’ rabies vaccinations are current Pets need re-vaccination every 1-3 years, depending on the vaccine and regional rabies risk

.Keep dogs controlled or on a leash to prevent contact with wild animals

.Report any strange animal behaviour to the local State Veterinary Office

.Stay informed, stay safe, and take immediate action if exposed Rabies is preventable with prompt and appropriate medical care

. For more information, contact your local healthcare provider or visit the nearest medical centre

Flamingo Vlei residents are being commended for their quick thinking and vigilance after several small fires broke out in the open grass areas around the suburb last week

According to the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW), between two and three separate fires were reported in the Flamingo Vlei area over the past two days Thanks to fast reporting from residents many of whom spotted smoke on CCTV cameras the blazes were contained before they could spread to nearby homes

“This is exactly why community awareness matters,” said Laura Outhet, spokesperson for TVNW

“We’re entering fire season, and early detection is key Residents who act quickly are helping to prevent what could easily become a much more serious situation ”

COMMUNITYSTEPSUP

Neighbours in the area have been praised for their teamwork and calm response during the incidents

“We’ve lived here for 15 years, and every summer the risk returns,” added Mark Jonas

“People walking dogs or jogging along the green belts should always keep an eye out even a small spark can turn dangerous ”

“Our neighbours all message each other when something’s spotted,” said resident Karen du Toit

The Rotary Club of Blouberg joined millions around the world in recognising World Polio Day recently, with an eye-opening awareness campaign at Bayside Shopping Centre in Table View

Over two days, 24 and 25 October, shoppers were invited to step inside a life-sized wooden “iron lung”, a replica of the machine that once kept polio patients alive The unique experience encouraged visitors to reflect on the devastating impact of the disease and the life-changing power of vaccination

EXPERIENCINGLIFEINSIDEANIRONLUNG

The iron-lung demonstration drew steady interest from curious shoppers and families throughout the weekend Many took turns lying inside the chamber for 20 minutes, experiencing the physical restrictions once endured by polio patients before vaccines became available in the 1950s

“This was a powerful way to help people understand why vaccination is so critical,” said Helène Visser of the club “There’s no cure for polio once it strikes, but it can be completely prevented through immunisation ”

The Blouberg Rotary Club welcomed several notable guests who visited or participated in the initiative, including Marlene le Roux, CEO of Artscape Opera House, herself a polio survivor as well as Prof Pierre Goussard from Tygerberg Children’s Hospital

Local schools also showed strong

The Rotary Club of Blouberg, in collaboration with the Downtown Los Angeles Rotary Club, recently hosted a powerful Peace in Schools event aimed at inspiring young South Africans to embrace peace, unity, and cultural understanding

The initiative, driven by Dr Bettye Walker, a member of the Downtown Los Angeles Rotary Club and honorary member of the Blouberg Rotary Club, encouraged learners from various high schools to explore the theme of peace through creative expression Each participating Rotary Peace Club was tasked with presenting their concept in South Africa’s 12 official languages through posters, banners, videos or flags

The event took place on 15 October at Buren High School, where the auditorium was filled with students, parents, community members and Rotarians The programme opened with a prayer by lay minister Llewellyn Okker, followed by a warm welcome from Buren High School principal Marwaan Shiri and

support Members of the Blouberg International High School Interact Club assisted Rotarians, while learners from Curro Century City Interact Club volunteered on Saturday to help engage with shoppers and hand out awareness material

ROTARY’SGLOBALEFFORTTOENDPOLIO

Since 1988, Rotary International has worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF on a mission to eradicate polio worldwide

Once a disease that paralysed hundreds of thousands of children each year, polio now remains endemic in only two countries

Pakistan and Afghanistan To sustain the progress, Rotary International must raise $50 million per year over the next three years, a target generously matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Although South Africa has been poliofree for decades the message remains crucial: vaccination is the only protection Recent outbreaks in Zimbabwe, Gaza and Angola serve as reminders that the virus can re-emerge wherever immunisation rates drop

“Only about 67% of young children in South Africa have received the polio vaccine,” said organisers “We urge parents to ensure their little ones are

protected; it’s a simple step that saves lives ”

HONOURINGCOURAGEANDRESILIENCE

The display also honoured the late Paul Alexander, who contracted polio at age 6 and spent more than 70 years living inside an iron lung

Despite being paralysed from the neck down Alexander earned a law degree and became an attorney, inspiring millions through his phenomenal courage and perseverance

The Blouberg Rotary Club contributed R5 000 to the Rotary Foundation’s Polio Eradication Fund and challenged other clubs in District 9350 to meet or exceed this amount The initiative raised additional donations and strengthened local awareness around the importance of vaccination “We are really and truly grateful to everyone who visited our stand, lay in the lung, and donated,” said Visser “Each rand, each conversation brings us closer to a world where no child will ever suffer from polio again ”

assistant teacher Jemina Josias, who served as mistress of ceremonies Earlier this year, in May, Walker presented several participating peace clubs with umbrellas printed with the word “Peace” in 100 languages, symbolising Rotary’s commitment to global harmony and inclusivity

Judges Attorney Max Ahmen (Blouberg Rotarian), Helène Visser (Blouberg Rotary Foundation chair), John Britz (Table Bay Rotarian), Judy Drew (Honorary Blouberg Rotarian), and Dr Vicky Ridel (Past District Governor D5280 Los Angeles), who joined online, evaluated the presentations and selected the winners

BULL FLUGTAG SOARS AGAIN: Fun,laughter and high-flying excitement filled the air

Embrace analog to balance digital life

Regarding the letter published on 29 October, it appears that the world has moved from physical childhood slavery to mental childhood slavery Meditation tai chi hiking many sports and activities away from computers help solve this problem I am a software developer with 40 years experience I hike I meditate I do tai chi I wear a 40-year-old watch that doesn’t count steps or tell me things I really don’t need to know On my bike, I don t use a headset or bluetooth

I don’t play computer games There are loads of great board games and there is my favourite activity, being able to have an old fashioned discussion without resorting to Google to check things I asked an electrical engineer friend a question the other day He said have you asked Google? I then emailed my

question to an electrical engineering professor I know, who I studied with in 1982, and he referred me to an electronic engineer who can solve the problem

We need to have digital and analog worlds I still have an old motorcycle with an analog speedometer I dislike these new digital speedometers which my car has, and which give one zero “distance”, zero reference point I live in Milnerton If people can get groups of 10 or more people (scholars included) together, I am willing to run weekly meditation and tai chi classes

People can email me (david@mypowerstation biz) WhatsApp notifications are switched off on my phone as they distract me too much

My personal view is that these activities increase people s brain power and ability to do more and stay

Weekend events gridlock city

I think it s time to say to the City administration: Wat genoeg is, is genoeg!

There is hardly a weekend going by without some or other huge event Now we just had this "Classic Motor Race” on an extremely busy Kgosana Drive It’s been poorly planned and seriously inconvenienced probably 100 000 residents who use the affected routes to travel between work and home daily The City no doubt made millions, but won't compensate even one of the affected citizens who’s travelling time will have been longer, using more fuel or paying more for taxi fare

If it’s not a marathon, it’s a huge football game in the stadium when thousands come in their cars gridlocking the city centre for hours (Sunday 5 October) I don’t know what the authorities did during the Western Cape in 2010, I wasn’t here, but I read about parking facilities to the east of the city centre and shuttle buses If then, why not now ?

Film crews hanging around everywhere blocking some roads even during the week or there is a fun walk, or the Cape Town Carnival, or beach Pro Volleyball in Camps Bay, as if that suburb isn’t congested enough It’s become almost impossible for large

coaches to drive along Victoria road any time on any day

The cruise ship season is here again when up to a dozen coaches depart from the cruise terminal on the days a ship is docked Driving up and down Kloof Nek road is a nightmare for the drivers, while turning into it coming from the cable way station in Tafelberg road is a lesson in extreme patience

Not to forget about the CTICC, hosting thousands of conference participants regularly, causing traffic along the adjacent roads to creep along at best Cape Town’s traffic control is totally out of sync at any time in the week, the City administration is out of touch with reality and staging such huge events is pleasuring relatively few yet causing thousands of the rate paying citizens much disruption

The time is long overdue when the number of huge events must be kept to a minimum, such as the traditional ones, Tweede Nuwejaar, the Two Oceans and the Argus

Additional ones should be limited to a maximum of maybe one a month, not like now when we have almost one every weekend

ahead of automation which started in 1760 with the first industrial revolution Imagine being able to work with and absorb and do two to 40 times more than you do now Imagine the ability to instantly recall things you learned years or decades ago Imagine learning techniques that allow you to remember things you think you have forgotten All possible Our brains are individually more powerful than every computer on the planet But do we have the user manual to use them efficiently and effectively? Meditation tai chi and other activities help to develop our brains and help to develop our intuition Intuition is knowing things we were never taught I use my intuition to find possible answers which I always research and check

‘Not a mistake’

Your article “Milnerton High parent pleads for mercy on family (TygerBurger 29 October) refers

Where was the “mercy” for the victim of your son’s bullying behaviour?

This is not some alleged activity It was captured on video for all to see!

And to dismiss deliberate behaviour as a “mistake” is ludicrous

A mistake is when you add 2 + 2 and get 5

This deliberate behaviour caused both physical and emotional harm the victim will live with for the rest of his life

While you are scared to leave your house, imagine the horror endured by the victim having to go to school every day and having to face your son's assault, physical or verbal

This is not about you

It’s about the victim, so deal with it like the victim had to deal with being beaten by a gang of cowards and thugs

What will they be getting up to once they leave school?

Jail time is the only appropriate punishment

NATIONAL AWARENESS DRIVE TACKLES CHILD MALNUTRITION CRISIS AFFECTING ONE IN FOUR SA CHILDREN

In a nation celebrated for its generosity and ubuntu, the reality remains stark: one in four South African children is growing up stunted a condition caused by chronic undernutrition that permanently limits growth and brain development

Determined to change that, Jenny Martin, Managing Director of Compact Food Solutions, is leading the charge from her Cape Town base

“When we nourish a child, we fuel a future,” says Martin “We raise healthier, happier children who will one day raise families, communities, and our nation ”

UNDERSTANDINGTHECHALLENGE

According to the SADHS 2016/2024

UNICEF report, 29% of South African children under five are stunted often up to 15cm shorter than expected for their age, and with as much as 40% of brain development lost during their first 1 000 days of life

While irreversible, stunting is entirely preventable CFS produces lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS-MQ) that meet WHO and UNICEF standards and distributes them through accredited NGOs to early childhood centres These small sachets, added to a child’s food, fill vital nutritional gaps between six and twentythree months

“These sachets might look small, but their impact is enormous,” says Martin

“They help children grow, learn, and thrive ”

VOICESFROMCANALWALK

At the Canal Walk activation, shoppers were encouraged to interact with displays, learn about early nutrition, and pledge support through micro-donations The event drew strong community engagement and heartfelt responses

“I had no idea stunting was this widespread,” said Leigh-Anne Jacobs from Durbanville “It’s eye-opening and I’m proud to see a local company taking the lead ”

“As a dad, this really struck a chord,” added Sibusiso Dlamini from Claremont “It reminded me that proper nutrition is not a luxury it’s a basic right ”

Retired nurse Mary Humphreys from Milnerton said: “Seeing people stop, listen, and care gives me hope This is how real change begins with awareness ”

LEADERSHIPWITHPURPOSE

With over 25 years’ experience in pharmaceuticals and consumer healthcare, Martin has always combined business expertise with a deep sense of purpose Under her leadership, CFS has strengthened its local manufacturing footprint and built lasting partnerships with NGOs and community organisations

“As a mother, I’ve seen how nutrition shapes a child’s potential,” she says “As

a leader, I know how collective action shapes a nation It’s time to bring those truths together ”

The

“Raise a Life Raise a Nation ” campaign will continue beyond National Children’s Day, with CFS planning more community activations in 2025 “Even a small act visiting a stand, making a micro-donation, or simply spreading the word helps give a child the start they deserve,” says Martin

Visitors explore the displays with curiosity and care
Young visitors eagerly checked how tall they’ve grown.
