Swimming at MelkbosstrandBeach hasbeen temporarily halted following asewage spill overthe weekend, prompting authoritiesto close the beachuntilfurthernotice.
The City of Cape Town told TygerBurger yesterday (Tuesday 24 February) their health and environmental officials wereon site assessing conditions andtrackingany potential risks to beachgoers. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid swimming or water activities until formal clearance is issued and the beach is declared safe.
CAUSEOFSPILL
The City said awet well clean-out wascarried out at the Ou Skip Main PumpStation early Saturday and Sundaymorning. However, unforeseen circumstancesled to an overflow at the 11th Avenue pump station, allowing sewage to enter coastalwaters along the Melkbos beachfront.
"The pump station teamhas since completed theclean-up operation, but public health warning signage hasbeen erected, and the beach will remain closed as aprecautionary measure. Authorities havestated thatthe beach will only reopen
once waterquality results comply with the National Coastal WaterQuality Guidelines for recreationaluse andthe City’s Sewage Spill Response Protocol," the City said.
RESIDENTSEXPRESSCONCERN
Local residents have voiced their
frustrations and concerns about the incident.Linda Botha, aregular visitor, said: “I’mglad the City is taking precautions, but Ihope they monitor the water closely before reopening.”
“It’sfrustrating that something like this happens so often. We rely on the beach for leisure,” added Dylan Pretorius, asurfer from Table View.
TheCityhas urged beachgoers to adhere to the ban and stay clear of the water until further notice. Authorities are monitoring water quality and have promised to issue updates as soon as conditions are deemed safe.

Beaches are being littered withdiscarded disposable nappies, raising alarm among environmental groups and community volunteers.

Environmental organisationSave aFishie hasofficiallylaunched its 2026 Schools Eco Challenge and Environmental Awareness Campaign in partnership withthe Cityof Cape Town. Running from March to June, the initiative invites primary schools across the metrotoparticipate in ahandson environmentaleducation programme aimedattackling pollution, waste reduction, recycling, water conservation and ecosystem protection. The programme is designed to move beyond theory —placing learnersatthe

Water Quality Awareness said theproblem reflectsa larger failure in waste management and producer accountability.
Product designer Jamii Hamlin described the situationasone of themostdisheartening aspects of modern consumer culture.
“Theconvenienceofa throwawaylifestyle andthe escalation of waste destined for landfill or flushed into the seahas become my greatest disillusionment.”
Sherecalledacoastal clean-up on RobbenIsland in 1999, where 22 000 pieces of rubbish were collected, amoment she described as her environmental “eureka” that shiftedher focus towards sustainable product design
Disposable nappies are made from complex materials, including plastics, elastic, adhesivesand super-absorbent polymers. They do not biodegrade. Instead, theybreak down into microplasticsthat enter marine ecosystems andpotentially the human food chain.
Environmental groups argue that while consumers must disposeofwaste responsibly, thescaleofnappies entering waterways points to systemic issues, from inadequatewaste services to insufficient producer responsibility.
ACALLTOMANUFACTURERS
Following the Lagoon Beach clean-up, Save aFishie issued an open letter to major disposable nappy brands calling for stronger action. The organisation is urging manufacturers to:
. Supportregular beach, river and wetland clean-ups.
. Invest in public education campaignsonproper disposal.
. Explore take-back schemes and lower-impact product alternatives.
. Strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility initiatives with measurable outcomes.
“If your logo is on our beaches it’s time your support is too,” theletter states. Founder Zoë Prinsloo emphasised that the
issue was not about blaming parents and caregivers.
“This is about systems that fail people and the environment,” she said. “What leaves our homes doesn’t disappear; it flows downstream.”
Advocates say City leadership is aware of the strain that nonbiodegradable waste places on sewage systems, landfills and biodiversity. But they argue that stronger enforcement, better infrastructure and greater producer accountability are urgently needed. Cape Town has repeatedly been recognised for its natural beauty and biodiversity. However, activists warn that maintaining that reputation requires decisive action.
Schools invited to lead the wayinnew ecochallenge
centre ofreal-world environmental action.
TURNINGKNOWLEDGEINTOACTION
Participating schools will form Eco Teams of 20 learners who will complete aseries ofpracticalchallenges to create meaningful environmental impact within theirschoolsand surrounding communities
Through action-basedlearning, learners will explore howeveryday behaviours affect streets, parks, rivers andoceans —and howsimple changescan prevent pollution before it starts.
Rather thanonlylearning about environmental problems, learners will actively become part of the solution.
PRACTICALCHALLENGESWITHREALIMPACT
Activities during the three-month campaign will include:
. School andcommunity clean-ups.
. Recycling and wastereduction initiatives.
. Water conservation awareness campaigns.
. Environmentaleducation projects.
. Creative “Recycling Monster” builds using reclaimed materials.
“Thesehands-on activities aim to inspire long-term behaviour change among learners, their families and broader school communities,”says ZoëPrinsloo, Founder of Save aFishie
EMPOWERINGYOUNGENVIRONMENTALLEADERS
The campaign seeks to engage up to 50 schools, directly involving more than 1000 learners andindirectly reaching thousands more.
“This project is aboutgiving learners theopportunity to understand pollution in areal-world way,” says Prinsloo. “When young people see the impact of their actionsand realisethey can be part of the solution, lasting change begins. Thanksto theCity of Cape Town’s support, we can reach more schoolsand empower more future environmentalcustodians.”
At theconclusionofthe programme, Eco Teams will present their projects for judging.
Thetop three schools will receive prizes of:
. R20 000 (first place)

The City of Cape Town has initiated the public participation process for its updated Freight Management Strategy, with residents and stakeholdersinvited to comment on plans that could reshape how goods move through the metro over the next decade.
The comment period opened yesterday, Tuesday 24 February and will continue until 31 March, givingcommunities the opportunity to influence freight planning decisions that directly affect them.
MODERNFREIGHTCHALLENGES
The strategy was tabled at the Subcouncil 17 meeting in Mitchells Plain on Monday 16 February. Cityofficial Nicky Sasman presented the report for noting.
Sasman said the increase in freight traffic has affected not only infrastructurebut also road accident statistics.
The updated strategy builds on the 2016 Freight Management Strategy while addressing contemporary challenges including the surge in online shopping deliveries, informal truck staging, and growing environmental concerns about freight transport.
The strategy tries to balance
the urban mobility department’s visionoffreight of “safe, efficient and reliable” transport while ensuring operators comply with safety and environmental principles
KEYINFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTSPLANNED
The strategy outlines significant infrastructure projectsdesigned to improve freightmovement acrossthe metro
These include developing the Kraaiconinland terminal, supporting the Belcon intermodal terminal, andreopeningthe Atlantis-Chempet rail line to servethe Atlantis
SPECIALECONOMICZONE
Other major projects include upgrades tothe Cape Town Container Terminal to increase capacity, new truck staging facilities in Paarden Eiland, andback-of-portfacilities in Culemborg. The strategyalso prioritises rail infrastructure, withplans toprotect and maintainCity-owned rail sidingswhilstadvocating for better utilisation of existing rail networkstoreduce road freight dependency.
ADDRESSINGCOMMUNITY CONCERNS
The strategy directly responds to community complaints about freight impacts, includingtraffic
UPDATESTO STRATEGY ADDRESS TRAFFIC CHANGESDUE TO DELIVERY INCREASES
congestion, accelerated road deterioration, and safety risks to pedestrians and cyclists. Environmentalissues feature prominently, with measures proposedtoaddress air pollution from vehicle emissions and noisepollutionfrom heavy vehicles, particularly affecting residential areas nearfreight corridors.
Thestrategy also tackles illegal parkingand offloading by delivery vehicles, which disrupts traffic flow and pedestrian access, whilst addressing nuisance behaviours from truck queuing near the port and terminals
TECHNOLOGYAND ENFORCEMENTFOCUS
Enhanced enforcement capabilitiesform acornerstone of theupdatedstrategy, including weigh-in-motion systems and automated over-height detection on strategic roads.
Thesetechnologies aim to reduce overloading andimprove compliance with vehicle regulations.
Thestrategy recognises the need for better freight movement data to inform planning decisions about loading zones, congestion management, and emissions reduction.
Digital scheduling systems and after-hours operations are proposed to reduce peak-hour freightmovements, potentially easingtraffic congestion during busy periods.
SUPPORTINGMICRO-FREIGHTAND LAST-MILEDELIVERY
Recognising the growth in online shopping and small-parcel deliveries, the strategy introduces specific measures for microfreightand last-mile delivery services
These include plans for dedicated loading zones, microhubs for package sorting, and infrastructuretosupport various delivery modes including cargo bikesand small delivery vehicles.
ECONOMICGROWTH CONSIDERATIONS
The strategy emphasises freight transport's role in supporting local and regional economic growth, recognising that efficient goods movement underpins businesscompetitiveness and job creation.
Plans include protecting freight-generating land uses near the portand along arterial routes from rezoning pressures
that could compromise freight efficiency.
Thestrategy also addresses the needs of small and informal freight operators, acknowledging theirimportant role in the local economy whilst working to improve safetyand compliance standards.
NEXTSTEPSFORIMPLEMENTATION
Following the public participation period, Urban Mobility will compile and analyse all comments received, preparing responses and incorporating appropriate feedback intothe final strategy.
Theupdated strategy will then progress through the City's formal approval processes, including consideration by the PortfolioCommittee for Urban Mobilityand eventual review by the Mayco and Council.
Subcouncils have been asked to assist with distribution of participation materials through their offices, libraries, and community networks, whilst encouraging local stakeholders to engage with the process. . Residents demand responsiblepet ownership
I'm absolutely fedupwith the number of dog owners inour area who think it's perfectlyfine to lettheir pets run wild without leads. It's becomingaserious problem that's affecting everyone'ssafetyand enjoymentofpublicspaces. Just last week,I wasout formymorningjog whena massive German Shepherdcame chargingtowards me, barking aggressively. Theownerwas nowhereinsight, andIhonestlythought Iwas about to be attacked. When Ifinally spottedthe owners chattingontheir phone 50 metres away, theyjustshruggedand said, "He's friendly"!
Well, that's notthe point, is it? Ishouldn't have to
guess whethersomeone's dog is going to bitemeor just wants to play.Myelderlymother won'tevenwalk to the shopsanymorebecauseshe'sterrifiedofbeing knocked over by an overexcited dog. And don't get me started on the mess theseunleashed dogsleave behind in our parksand on pavements. It's disgustingand completelyunfair to families trying to enjoy thesespaces. Thelaw is crystalclear –dogsmust be on leads in public areas. It's notjustabout following rules; it's about common courtesyand respect foryour neighbours. Your dog might be the sweetest creature on earth, but the rest of us don't knowthat. FEDUP, Durbanville

Die metro is besig om in ‘n tente- of karton-dorp te ontaard. Hierdie euwel word by die dagerger en geen noemenswaardigevordering word gemaak om dit te keer nie

Calls foraction at dam
Iamfrustrated at the ongoing problems at De Oude Spruit dam, which at times is an absolute nightmare forresidents.
What wasonceapeacefulspot hasturned intoa regularhangout forgroupsofyoung peoplewho seem to have no respect whatsoeverfor the community. They gather theretodrink, smoke, anduse the most appalling language youcan imagine As someonewho's livedherefor over15years, I'm genuinelyworried aboutthis. My elderlyneighbour can'tevenwalkher dog thereanymorebecause she's been verbally abusedfor asking them to keep the noisedown.
We'vecalledthe police, but theyshowuphours laterwhen everyone'salready gone. The council seems equally disinterested in sortingthis mess out. This dam belongs to allofus, notjust abunch of rowdy teenagers who think theyown the place. We need proper enforcement, regular patrols, andperhaps some decent lighting andCCTV to deter this antisocial behaviour.Enoughisenough. Ourcommunitydeserves better.
