Now, Sanccob is inviting you to experience this world first-hand On Saturday 27 September, the centre will host an Open Day, giving the public a rare opportunity to see what goes into seabird rehabilitation and discover how they too can make a difference
Visitors will get behind-the-scenes insights into the vital work of prepping fish for feedings, assisting the rehabilitation team, and even learning how rescued penguins are supported on their journey back to the wild Staff and volunteers will be on hand to share their stories, answer questions, and showcase the impact of community involvement in conservation

The move comes at a time of heightened concern over safety at Table View and Milnerton beachfronts TygerBurger recently reported on a spate of drownings in the area, where kite surfer Graham Howes lost his life and two were still missing at sea These incidents have underscored the urgent need for a stronger ocean-safety presence along this popular stretch of coastline, which attracts swimmers, kite surfers and tourists throughout the year
Van der Linde added: “As you know, we’ve had three awful drownings on our beaches of late After such tragedies BlueCape’s presence is so, so welcome Their expertise in both ocean safety and water sports makes them the perfect partner for this space ”
Daniel Olivier, a local kite surfer, said: “As someone who spends a lot of time on the water, I can’t think of a better use for the centre BlueCape brings both safety and support for ocean sports it feels like a win-win for everyone ”

The Astron Energy Refinery in Milnerton faced another operational hiccup this week when a process unit tripped, sending visible smoke billowing from one of its stacks The unit was immediately shut down as a safety precaution for employees and the surrounding community
The refinery issued a notice warning that flaring and venting noise can be expected as the units are gradually brought back online The noise may persist until operations are fully stabilised, and mitigation measures were being implemented to reduce disruption to nearby residents
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the community’s understanding as we work to safely return the refinery to normal operation,” the refinery stated Residents can send inquiries or complaints via SMS by texting “query” or “complaint” followed by their message to 30786
EXPLOSION,PRODUCTSPILL
Astron Energy has been fully reopened since 2023 after the explosion in 2020 in which two workers were killed According to news reports the inquest into what transpired during the explosion in 2020 found the Astron refinery blast was caused by safety protocol violations
In 2023 the refinery also made headlines after a product spill affected local birds and wildlife The reported leak took place in Koeberg Road into the Table Bay waterways that run through Rietvlei Wetland Reserve and join the Milnerton Lagoon
FEDUPWITHREPEATEDDISRUPTIONS
For many in Milnerton this incident was far from isolated Residents expressed frustration over ongoing noise and power trips from the refinery
Samuel Muller from Milnerton said: “This has become a regular disturbance The noise keeps my children awake, and it feels like nothing changes ”
A resident of Flamingo Vlei, Johan Dane, said: “Every few weeks there’s flaring or power trips It’s exhausting and affects everyone in the area ”
Peter Novac of Table View said: “The visible smoke is concerning It’s stressful knowing this could happen at any time ”
Residents were calling for stronger mitigation measures and better contingency planning to prevent frequent disruptions and ensure the community is not continually affected by refinery operations
Astron Energy assured the public last week that efforts were underway to safely return the process units to normal operation

A photograph featuring police and private security company vehicles and red and white tape to cordon off the scene was shared on the watch's social media pages The watch stated that no injuries were reported, and asked for any witnesses to come forward and or for anyone with CCTV cameras, which can assist in the matter, to reach out to them One resident who commented on the social media post, says she heard three gunshots go off near Tulbagh Street around 21:05

The Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) has warned recently that learners in the area are being “targeted” for their mobile devices, especially during the early morning drop-off The CPF issued a warning on Thursday 11 September, encouraging learners to stay alert and safe
Mario Borchards, CPF chair, stated that he wants to bring the safety concern to the attention of the community, after being approached for comment
"Learners within the Bothasig precinct are increasingly being targeted for their devices - such as cellphones and laptopsparticularly during early-morning school drop-offs
“In the last couple of months, there have been incidents where learners were robbed in front of schools during these early-morning hours This is a deeply concerning trend that places our young people at risk
“We appeal to parents, guardians, and learners to remain vigilant during drop-off times Staying alert and taking precautionary measures can help reduce

THINKING OUT LOUD
The Christmas pox
It’s September, which is Spring and Heritage Month but also mine and my hubby’s birthday months
Yay! To me this means booking all those lekker free trips that become available in this month only but it also means prepping for Christmas Christmas is a big deal in our family and I prefer to start prepping now before prices get inflated for Black Friday “sales” and festive season madness
This year especially I would like to have a special Christmas with my family because not only have we had a hard year but last year Christmas was spent in quarantine because our family were ‘poxxed’ It began in early November when my middle daughter came home with a blister on her wrist Parents in the know are already groaning yes, it was chickenpox I sprang into protocol mode: isolation, Allergex, calamine, Panado generics, and a message to her teacher
The teacher replied with a crying emoji My daughter was the fifth in her class, and by year-end 11 had caught it, part of a mini-outbreak that overlapped with exams
You’re probably thinking: “Vaccines!” Well, I’m not anti-vax I’m pedantic about every other jab but I’ve never been sold on the chickenpox one It’s expensive, not on the state schedule, requires boosters, and may even be linked to shingles spikes in some countries So, I let nature take its course
Sure enough, chickenpox’s virality meant the others were likely doomed except my eldest, who’d had it at two The next day my youngest and second youngest
In case you’re counting on your fingers and struggling to keep up, let me clarify, I have seven daughters
The rash faded quickly, probably allergies, but I wasn’t sure But first, let me explain my own bizarre immunity I’m the eldest of four, my mother’s sickliest child, asthmatic and allergic to half the planet, yet I never caught chickenpox despite multiple exposures including from my youngest sister, from my eldest daughter, and even while working at Red Cross Hospital A blood test later confirmed I am immune, though how remains a mystery I briefly considered the vaccine but the test spared me the decision Naturally, my teens hoped I’d passed this magic gene down When my middle child recovered, second eldest taunted her mercilessly, certain she’d dodged the virus Then, the day before her final exam, the blisters appeared A doctor confirmed her mild case, which only added to her smugness Until my fourth daughter got it She missed her prizegiving and, by the time she recovered, mid-December had arrived Just as we thought it was over, my second eldest, the prideful mocker, caught it again rare but possible I did feel for her, though Her 15th birthday was a week before Christmas, and her beach party plans dissolved in a sea of blisters With second eldest sick, we were officially housebound for Christmas As she recovered, my third eldest sprouted a blister, then my youngest on her eye, so New Year’s was equally subdued By January we were three months into the saga, with only my second youngest untouched Sure enough, the day before school started, a blister appeared on her lip My excited little Grade R missed her first weeks thanks to chickenpox By then, the pox had finally had its one-at-a-time way with every one of my children and made last Christmas (cue George Michael) the one forever marked in family lore as the year of the Christmas Pox - LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY
Moderne wonderwerk gebeur

Business man arrested in Durbanville
I would like to express my shock and disgust at the incident in Durbanville ("Sakeman in hegtenis vir skoot op messteker", TygerBurger 17 September), in which a concerned businessman was trying to save someone's life and, after using physical force on the attacker, had to resort to using a firearm to avoid a murder or further injury to the victim
The report stipulates that he reported this to the police, only to get arrested for attempted murder
What was he supposed to do? Just stand back and watch and let the criminal do as he pleased?
Instead of thanking him, the police locked him up for the night Unbelievable!
I hope he sues the police for tarnishing his name
Can someone please get clarity on what the police would like the public to do when they encounter any type of criminal offence?
Should we just stand and watch and wait for someone to die?
It seems if you don't have a red beret and overalls you're likely to get arrested at the drop of a hat Stopthecrazy,BRACKENFELL
fences, gates, and rules plastered on signs But how often do you see six or more unrelated children freely playing together? When we design for rules instead of for joy, we design out community Mr Andrews I urge you: Let us redesign some of our recreational spaces with skateboarding in mind Create safe, well-maintained parks that welcome skateboarders, cyclists, and skaters Let Cape Town become the city that proudly says: We did not forget our youth! Imagine the pride if one day a South African skateboarder, who credits the design of the Durbanville skatepark for providing the foundation needed to develop their skills, should carry our flag at the Olympic Games That story begins with a decision we make now TristanBellingan,HOOGSTEDE

September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
September is the month usually associated with the beginning of Spring and the month in which South Africans celebrate their heritage
The month however also marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the courage of children fighting cancer, the resilience of their families, and the tireless efforts of healthcare teams who journey alongside them, the provincial health department said in a statement last week
At Tygerberg Hospital, children are not defined by their diagnosis, the department said Instead, they are fighters, dreamers and survivors whose stories inspire hope With access to modern therapies provided in paediatric oncology units, many childhood cancers can now be cured, offering families the promise of brighter tomorrows, the department said
"These days, most children with cancer can be cured by modern therapy given in a paediatric oncology unit After treatment completion, it is important for survivors to attend a survivorship clinic to monitor their development and detect and manage any complications or so-called effects of the cancer or its treatment, explains Prof Anel van Zyl, paediatric oncologist at Tygerberg Hospital
Four-year-old Stanton Saaiman from Delft was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in January last year By then, the cancer had already spread to his bones and bone marrow Despite the challenges, Stanton responded well to chemotherapy, took part in an innovative research study using targeted radioactive therapy, and bravely underwent surgery and radiotherapy, the department said
This month, he will complete his treatment and continue his journey at the hospital's childhood cancer survivorship clinic
IMPACTONFAMILIES
His mother, Alethia, explains their journey with the disease
"When I heard the words stage-four cancer, my world collapsed But Stanton
was so strong that I decided never to cry again His bravery gave us strength as a family Today, we thank God, the doctors, and the community for carrying us through In February, when we celebrated that he was cancer-free, we held hands as a family to thank God for his faithfulness," she said
The department said early diagnosis remains the key to saving lives
"Parents, caregivers, and the community should be alert to persistent symptoms such as unexplained fevers, weight loss, fatigue, pallor, or lumps and swellings If a child shows signs like vision changes, bone pain, headaches, or persistent bleeding, they must be evaluated urgently Early detection saves lives," said Van Zyl If your child shows any of the warning signs of childhood cancer, it is important to seek medical help without delay
The public can access care in the following way:
Start by visiting your nearest clinic or family doctor for an initial check-up If further investigation is required, your child will be referred to a district or regional hospital
Children suspected of having cancer are referred to a specialist paediatric oncology unit, such as the one at the Tygerberg Hospital, where diagnosis and treatment are provided

Kuslangsvirkanker
DESIRÉERORKE
DESIREE RORKE@TYGERBURGER CO ZA

Comedian Nik Rabinowitz hobbles triumphantly back to Die Boer theatre to bring the audience his new stand-up special“Geriatric Millennial”on Tuesday 30 September at 20:30 The show is perfectly summarised by the phrase:“It’s never quite been the same”– words Nik now uses to describe his‘dicky’knee, his sex life, and his ability to stay awake past 21:00.“Remember when pulling an all-nighter meant clubbing until dawn, not just getting up six times to pee?”Laugh until your back spasms,or your smartwatch reminds you it’s time for your medications . City Ballet returns to Artscape
Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) returns to the Artscape Opera House this October with the timeless classical ballet Coppélia, performed for three shows only Audiences will be treated to the live accompaniment of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Brandon Phillips.
A spirited classic brimming with charm, Coppélia combines romance, mischief, and magical illusion in a tale beloved by ballet lovers the world over Set in a picturesque village, the story follows the young and impressionable Franz, who becomes enchanted by a mysterious girl he sees reading on the balcony of the

The winners of the Super Leagues of Western Province Rugby Union received their respective trophies on Saturday 20 September at City Park in thrilling matches
In Super League A, Villager dethroned Hamiltons, the defending champions, by 30-14 and it seemed as if the one week layoff had an influence on the performance of Hamiltons Both teams will be in action in the 2026 season in Super League A, and will be joined by Franschhoek and Primrose
In the Super League B final, it was one-way traffic between Primrose and Franschhoek, when Primrose under the coaching of Ricky Petersen, won 46-24 It was evident last week already in the semis

VICTORY
The UJ defence, marshalled by Shannon Macomo and Portia Masilela, put up a resolute fight, successfully containing UWC's attacking threats including Chelsea Daniels and captain Tiffany Kortjie Early in the second half, UWC's Kortjie delivered the decisive blow In the 46th minute, she scored the only goal of the match, completing a hat-trick of titles for the Western Cape side Despite falling behind, UJ fought valiantly to get back into the game Captain Sthembile Sandleni, Kabelo Mokoena, and substitute
Gugulethu Dhlamini led the charge, but to no avail UJ's best opportunity came in the dying moments when Kamogelo Maponya found herself one-on-one with the UWC goalkeeper, but her shot went wide After the victory, UWC coach Thinasonke Mbuli praised her team and the strategic preparation that led to the triumph She highlighted the role of the team s video analyst, stating: "The credit for this victory must go to our video analyst He knew the threat from the opposition We knew that UJ striker Thato Mofolo would be lethal with her usual turns because she's good at that " .
