Although the building does notfall directly under DPWI’s mandate, the department prioritised the repairsdue to the severity of the damage.
“No police station should be allowed to deteriorate to the point where its most public-facingfacility becomes structurally unsafe,” said DA Member of Parliament, Nicholas Gotsell
OVERSIGHTLEADSTOLONG-OVERDUEREPAIRS
According to Gotsell, the collapse of theceiling in the charge office created unacceptable conditions for both police officers and the public.
He welcomed the DPWI’s decisionto treat the matter as urgent, noting that safety must remain anon-negotiable priority at police stations.
While the repairs are under way, Gotsell warned thatinfrastructure improvements alone do not address deeperchallenges facing the station.
STATIONOPERATINGBELOWSTAFFING CAPACITY
In response to arecent parliamentary question, the acting minister of police confirmed that Table View Police Station is operating at only 78,4% of its staffing allocation, despite the area experiencing rapid population growth.
“The Independent Electoral Commission’s decision to createan additional ward in Table View isclear evidence that the populationhas expanded beyond what existing policing resources were designed to serve,” Gotsell said. “Yet staffing levels and operationalcapacity have notkept pace.”
He added that vehicles remain unused in garages and terrain-appropriate resources have been removed, further weakening
the station’s abilitytopolice alarge and challenging area.
CONCERNSOVERLOSSOFVEHICLESAND RESOURCES
The parliamentaryreply alsoconfirmed that a4x4 vehicle was removed from Table View Police Station to support Operation Shanela.Gotsell criticised the decision, saying it undermines crime-fighting effortsin an area with sandy andoff-road terrain.
“Taking vehiclesand capacity away from afast-growingprecinctdoesnot fight crime—itentrenches vulnerability,”he said Gotsell further expressed concern that while police increasingly relies on the City of Cape Town’s metro police to shoulder theburden of crime prevention, it remainsreluctant to modernise policing roles or devolve certain investigative powers.
CALLFORPROPERRESOURCING
The DA hascommitted to continued oversight to ensure thatthe creation of an additional ward is formally reflected in staffing levels, vehicle allocation and infrastructure investment at Table View Police Station.
“Resources mustbeadded to highgrowthprecincts, not removed from them,” hesaid. “Communities likeTable View cannot be expected to absorb rapid population growth andrising crime while policing capacity stagnates or declines.”
He added that while the DA remains grateful for the dedication of Table View police officers, sustained pressure will continue until thestationisproperly staffed, equipped andhoused in facilities that are safe, functionaland fit for purpose.

After arecent petition gained momentum, Milnerton residents have joined forces with communities across Cape Town to urge the public to sign the ‘Stop the Sewage’petition, callingfor urgent action and accountability from the CityofCape Town over ongoingsewage pollution
Distinguished epidemiologist Dr Jo Barnes, Emeritus from Stellenbosch University’s Health Department at Tygerberg, has publicly supported the petition, issuing astrong plea to the City to address repeatedsewage spills thatpose seriousrisks to publichealth, livelihoods and the environment.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis,Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews and Francine Higham were formally invited to accept the petition, which highlights the widespread impacts of sewage pollution across the Helderberg, Milnerton and surrounding areas.
Ongoing sewage spills into rivers, wetlands, beaches and the ocean expose communitiestoharmful bacteria such as E. coli and Enterococci, while public warnings remain inconsistent or inadequate. Residents sayanxiety over water quality has stripped many communities of simplerecreational pleasures and compromised their wellbeing.
Tourism, hospitality and small businesses are also feeling the strainas foul odours, beach closures and pollution advisories deter visitors. Residents continue paying rates and taxes while property values decline and jobs areput at risk.
“We pay our rates every month, yet we can’t safely swim, walk near the lagoon

orlet our kids play on the beach," said resident Deon Jacobs. "This isn’t aluxury issue —it’sabout basic services and public health.”
According to thepetition, environmental damage causedbysewage pollutionis severeand oftenirreversible. "Wetlands, estuaries and marineecosystems are degraded, seabirds andfish are killed, andCapeTown’s unique biodiversityis increasingly threatened —leavingfuture generations to bear the cost,"the petition reads,
Environmentalists andconservation groups have addedtheir voices to the growing call for action, saying thescale of pollutionwitnessed overthe festive season reinforces the urgencyofthe petition.Zoë Prinsloo, an environmental activistwho participated in extensive coastalcleanups overthe holidays, said the volume of waste and pollution collected was deeply concerning Ayesha Davids from Sunset Beachsaid: “Clean-ups help, but volunteers shouldn’t be cleaning up sewage pollutioncaused by system failures. The City must fix the source, notjust manage the fallout.”
The City’sInland Rivers andWetlands Report(May 2024) found thatCape Town’s rivers andwaterways are 59% contaminated, reflectinga20% increase from the previous reporting period.
Scientific research hasconfirmed pharmaceutical contaminationinmarine life andeven in critically endangered
African penguin eggs, highlighting how pollution moves through catchment areas into coastalenvironments. Key water bodiessuchasMilnerton Lagoon,Zandvlei, Rondevlei and Zeekoevlei, along withrivers including the Diep,Black, Disa,Lotus, Eerste, Lourens, Soetand Sir Lowry’s, are now considered barometers of environmental degradation.
Residents have alsoraised concerns aboutthe threeAtlantic Seaboard marine outfall pipelines, which discharge approximately 50 million litres of raw sewage daily into marineprotected areas near Hout Bay, Camps Bay and Green Point.
CONSTITUTIONALRIGHTSAND LEGALOBLIGATIONSBREACHED
The petition statesthatongoing sewage spills violate Section 24 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees theright to an environmentthat is not harmful to health or wellbeing. It further citesbreachesof:
*NEMA Section 28 (Duty of care)NEMA
Section 30 (Pollutionincident response)
City Water andSanitation By-laws
*TheNational HealthAct
Residents saydelayed responses, poor communication andinadequate maintenance amount to afailure of governance.

The petition calls for:
. Transparent financial reporting.
.Independentwaterquality monitoring and public dashboards
.Immediatepublic alerts within two hoursofspills.
.Infrastructure upgrades and a development moratorium until capacity is adequate.

Baieouersisaandieeuwelvan skoolvervoeruitgelewer
—BRENDEN RUITER

This gripping drama centres on therise anddestruction of abrilliant andruthless man, but with adifference: 12 patrons become jurors who vote guilty or not guilty each night, changing theending of every performance. The play embodies Rand's styleofsocial commentary, asking: "Who is trulyontrial —the accused, or the societythatjudges her?" It promisesto be anail-biting,thought-provoking and absorbingevening.

Vigilancekeyduring schoolpick-ups
With the 2026 academic year now in full swing, parents have been reminded to exercise caution when dropping off or picking up their children from school.
District Group, alocal private security company, last week shared some helpful safety tips in this regard, to help parents.
In apost on its social media page, it says the daily school run is routine, but that routine can bring risks. Busy streets, predictable routes, and rushed handovers create opportunities for mistakes and crime, they wrote. The group mentions, however, that small habits make abig difference.

Social development dismissesfalse rumours
The National Department of Social Development has dismissed false claims circulating on social media that theCovid-19 Social Relief of Distressgrant is set to end.
Videos and graphics spreading across various social-media platforms have incorrectly stated that the government planstoterminate the cSRD programme, prompting the department to issue an urgent clarification.
“There is no such decision, announcement or directive from theDepartment or government regarding the termination of thecSRD.”
The department expressed particular concern over theunauthorised use of the minister’s official image and thedepartment’slogo in the misleading posts, warning that such actions constitute illegal misrepresentation of government communication.
Social Development officials havecautioned the public
against creating and sharing fake news that causes unnecessary panic amongst grant beneficiaries who depend on the monthly payments.
Thedepartment urged South Africans to disregard the false information and rely solely on verified announcements from official government channels.
Thedepartment directed the public to four official sources for accurate information about social grants and government announcements. These include the Department of Social Development’sofficial website, SASSA and NDA official platforms, verified government social-media pages, and the DSD WhatsApp Channel.
Theclarification comes as millions of SouthAfricans continue to rely on the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant for financial support, making any rumours about itstermination particularly concerning for communities that are vulnerable.
