“Don’t look back at your past and hold on to childhood trauma, but decide where you want to go in future and worktowards your goal,” is the advice of aBloubergstrand mother, who has just walked away with thecoveted titleofMrs Universe South Africa 2026 —the first woman from the Western Cape to win the national title.
The annual Mrs Universe South Africa pageanttook place at theRoodepoort Theatreon19February. Charlene Kleynhans from Bloemhof in Free State was crowned first runner-up.

ABUSIVEFAMILYSYSTEM
She wasonlyseven years old when she wastaken from her divorced mother andput in the careofher father andher stepmother in the Free State.
“It was an abusive family system and when, at the age of 13, Iinsisted to come and visit my motherinCape Town, Isaw it as an opportunity to getout. Itore up the return ticket anddecided to stay right here. Iwas told by afriend of Durbanville High School and itshostel. Ilived in the hostel from 2006 to 2009, where the residence father, Adriaan Cronje,and his wife, Sanette,became my secondfamily. Theytaught me about love andhad agreat impact on my life,”Venter says.
Venter has been married for sevenyears to her husband, Adrian,who she met while at school and he was alearner at
Fairmont High School. They have afouryear-old daughter.
Shenow wants to inspire people to realisethat“it does not matter what cards you were dealt, you can decide what you want to do with your life”. Venter did a course in life coaching in 2020, and has been presentingstrategic life coaching, in whichshe teachespeople steps and skills to break freefrom their childhood or other trauma.
Shehas already writtenafew journals, and is currently busy with one aimed at children. Shealso hopes to present motivational talks at schools.

Melkbosstrand beachremainsopen and calm,despite reports of aseal attack last Friday evening. TygerBurger wasonsite on Saturday and observed that conditions werenormal, withlifeguards actively monitoring thearea and warning signageclearly displayed.
Authorities emphasise that while the beachisaccessible, beachgoers should remain vigilant when entering the water
According to local Ward councillor Paul Swart, the recent incident involved onlyone man who was bitten by aseal. Other reportscirculating online reference previous attacks, some of which occurred months or even years ago, and do not reflect the current situation
The single attack happenedonFriday evening, when the man wasbitten while swimming. Emergency services attended to the victim, and he received immediate medical care. No other incidents were reported in connection withthis event, andthe situation at thebeach wasstable by Saturday. Lifeguards and safety signage remain in place to alert visitors of potential hazards.

Anyone bittenbyasealisurged to seek medicalattention immediately, regardless of whether previoustreatment was administered. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which may include rabies vaccine andimmunoglobulin, will be determined by medical professionals based on the nature and severity of the bite.

These timeless words seem so prescient and ominous in the uncertain times we find ourselves today, in thewakeofthe bloody war in the Middle-East, inflation, the Ukraine invasion, Trump's presidency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modifying and "streamlining" the way we work. Sadly, the skills more people are developing lately are related to howto "perfect" their AI prompts to visualise aconcept instead of struggling to understand photography or learn an instrument and use critical thinking. Idread the long-term effects on our brain processing power after decadesof relying on producing prompts instead of pondering and solving some of the problems ourselves.
It is often said that each generation assumes they are living in the "end times", while the one preceding it feels that today's youth are "doomed, spoilt, entitled" and frying theirbrains with TikTokand Instagram.
Whether it's thebaby boomers emerging from World War 2, millennials witnessing changes in music, movies and computers reshaping our daily lives.
Today we find Gen-Z caught in the throes of social media, political turmoil between the left and theright andsurviving a pandemic that shackled the world to slow down.
However, Ifind Gen-Z's social consciousness and urge to call out injustice when it comes to racismand discrimination so importantand so inspiring when it comes to uniting in the nameoflove, peace and understanding, especially with thefar-rightsoeagerto mock and belittle their voices and stake in the world.
Sadly, some of us lack the curiosity and empathy to imagine what its like growing up in adifferent background, culture, way of eatingand celebrating life. Each of us is swimming in adark, mysterious current that can drown us or inspireusto swim. As ordinarycitizens we have to navigate, survive the challenges that meet us in each revolving era, God forbid we find ourselves in World War 3.
We owe it to our children and the next generation who are hungrytohelp the world and live alife that is unique to them, to support them and guide them on their mission to make their mark in society.
Our parentsalways speak fondlyofthe golden oldies they listened to growing up like the Bee Gee's, Bob Marley and Whitney Houston and simpler times, so tooare the next wave of youth eager to see how today'sartists will provide the soundtrack to their lives.
There's areason why the 80s sounded different to the 90s, anew dawnhad descendedwith new exciting ideas.
Thus Iremain optimistic that the youth can lead us out of the darkness thatbreeds division, hatred, warfare and deliverus to amoment in time where we canspeak to each other around atable insteadof shouting and justifying our opinions
Amidst the social upheaval of the 60s another inspiring tune by TheBeatles echoed on the airwaves and still soothes to this daywith the simple message which said, "all you need is love".
This simple mantracan healthe world for those who wish to listen and thosewho choose to care.

After months of waiting the 37th Bayhill Premier Cup (BPC) tournament is upon us.
Scheduled for Wednesday 1toMonday 6April, the tournament will take place at Erica Park in Belhar, with thefinal on Monday6April at Athlone Stadium. Participants’ names were revealed on Saturday14March during adraw conducted at the Cape TownCivicCentre. Atotal of 226 local Western Cape teams went head-to-head against each other from October to February to qualify forthe spots over the Easter period.
