The City’s Street People Programme Unit continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of Cape Town’s rough sleepers, having helped over 5 000 people off the streets in the past financial year This they did through access to City-run Safe Space and partner shelters, work placement and reintegration programmes, family reunification, and help to overcome substance abuse

Bayside back on track: Work on the multi-million-rand Bayside canal upgrade in Milnerton will resume in October following the resolution of a contractual dispute with the service provider The upgrade was temporarily suspended in November 2024 at 55% completion. The project is a key City investment to improve water quality in the Rietvlei by enabling Bayside canal to cope with increased stormwater flows during peak periods and addressing pollution of stormwater channels into the vlei. The provision of naturally structured treatment facilities is a major focus to improve the quality of stormwater runoff from the canal into the Rietvlei. This is why construction will first focus on the stormwater canal leading to the primary sedimentation ponds, as well as the bypass canal from the secondary treatment channel to Rietvlei

City needs help containing the creep

Recreation and Parks is actively managing ivy infestations in public spaces. Yet community awareness and action remain critical to control this invasive creeper across town.

English ivy (Hedera spp ) is a flowering species from the Araliaceae family and is native to Europe It was originally introduced to South Africa as a groundcover and ornamental climber, but in Cape Town, its rapid spread has become a growing concern in both public and private spaces The Hedera canariensis and Hedera helix are particularly problematic.

Let’s cut it down to size

The ivy is listed as a category 3 invasive species under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 and must be managed accordingly In sensitive or riparian areas its status escalates to category 1b, requiring control If left unmanaged, ivy blocks a tree’s sunlight and causes branch dieback The added weight that the creeper adds to the distressed tree often results in collapse and also increases the risk of wind damage in open areas. The plant outcompetes and displaces local vegetation which damages our biodiversity

Creeping up on us: The City is calling on residents to help it control and contain Hedera spp , commonly known as ‘ivy’ or ‘English ivy’ The creeping, climbing invasive plant poses a serious threat to the local environment

If you have ivy in your garden, use what is left of the cooler months – ivy’s dormant phase – as a strategic opportunity to control or remove it safely following the steps below:

• Manually pull out the stems and roots. The stems can be removed from the ground of a standing tree Upper vines will die if they are not rooted, so they can be left to rot

• Follow up regularly to remove any new growth

• Dispose of the cuttings responsibly

Do not dump trimmings in natural areas, as the plant may re-root and spread.

• Either dry the vine clippings on a plastic or canvas sheet or a paved surface, and then shred, or solarise in black trash bags until the vines are no longer viable.

* Report ivy overgrowth in public spaces by logging a service request via the City’s C3 system. Alternatively, log sightings on the iNaturalist app and website to help the City track infestations.

No mow, let them grow

To give Cape Town’s spring flowers and fynbos a chance to grow, bloom and seed, the City will again be following a ‘no-mow’ approach at selected public open spaces, greenbelts, road verges and parks from July to November The affected areas will be marked with temporary signage to inform residents of the adjustment to the mowing schedule and encourage respect for these special natural spaces

Many of the earmarked no-mow areas contain remnants of critically endangered vegetation and pockets of high biodiversity and often serve as corridors that connect larger biodiversity hotspots such as conservation areas, nature reserves and national parks.

Nominate a no-mow area

Residents can help support Cape Town’s unique biodiversity by nominating local parks or green spaces to be included in future nomow areas. Send your suggestions to RP.Enquiries@capetown.gov.za

* To view the full list of no-mow locations across the metro, go to https://bit ly/41Bq61M Areas not on the list will be mowed as per the normal annual schedule

‘Mowratorium’ on cutting:

The City will be halting mowing at selected public parks and open spaces until November so that the Mother City’s endemic and indigenous flowers and fynbos can flourish

Building hope, breaking down barriers as social housing pipeline rolls out

One of this administration’s most important priorities is to break down the unjust spatial legacy of our country’s past – to make our city fairer and more accessible, and to give more Capetonians a better chance at building a life of dignity and prosperity

When people live in difficult circumstances, far from economic opportunities and reliable transport, their options in life effectively shrink

To build Cape Town into a city of hope for all who live here, we must put far more Capetonians within reach of those opportunities, and break down the barriers that keep them locked out

That is why our pledge to speed up the delivery of more affordable housing across town is so important

At our Council meeting in August, we took another big step forward on this mission when we handed over one of the best-located parcels of land in the city centre – the ‘Fruit & Veg’ site at the top of Roeland Street – to our private-sector developer partner for a mixed-use development that will include 237 social housing units

These units are subsidised rental flats aimed at those with a monthly

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR

household income of less than R22 000

We now have around 12 000 such units at various stages of development in our social housing pipeline, of which 4 000 are in inner-city areas such as Woodstock, Salt River and Maitland. This offers tenants easy access to services opportunities and amenities

Tenants of the ‘Fruit & Veg’ development specifically – so called for the Food Lover s Market store, formerly known as Fruit & Veg City, located there – will have the entire city centre on their doorstep, with MyCiTi bus stops just a block away There are

schools nearby, and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology is just a short stroll away This is the kind of address that can instantly change people’s lives

This model where we partner with the private sector holds the key to unlocking affordable housing for thousands more families

Developers who bid on these discounted properties have to deliver a minimum number of social housing units as part of their mixed-use development And should they fail to meet this threshold, ownership of the property would revert to the City

Our friends at Province, too, have three exciting inner-city projects in their social housing pipeline. We will continue to play an enabling role to support these provincial projects, as well as to contribute financially where we can

Project by project, we are chipping away at the massive demand for affordable housing in the metro, and giving more Cape Town families the chance to reimagine their future and restart their dreams.

Western Cape dam levels slightly lower than this time last year

The dam levels for Cape Town are sitting at 92,4% The City is aiming for an overall usage target of 650 million litres per day – which means Capetonians should still try to use less than 105 litres per person per day

Protect our water resources by following water-wise guidelines

Residents and businesses are reminded that the permanent regulations contained in the City s Water By-law still apply across Cape Town, regardless of the

restriction level

Municipal water may be used in gardens only before 09:00 or after 18:00, but never to hose down paved areas

• Visit www capetown gov za/thinkwater or www capetown gov za/waterregulations to access the regulations

Once-off write-off a chance to reset

The 2025/26 budget includes the write-off of some R2,2 billion in old debt for qualifying beneficiaries. By having their old debts written off, beneficiaries undertake to pay their dues

and social grants.

Some non-profit, public-benefit and social institutions may also meet the requirements. The goodwill shown through debt write-offs is proven to foster a stronger payment culture. As a result, the City has been able to maintain an annual collection ratio of above 95% during tough economic times As at 30 June 2025, the collection ratio was 97,83%

Support doesn’t stop there Aside from the debt write-off initiative, the City also still offers extensive rates and services relief to pensioners and those relying on social grants and indigent support

* To find out more about the debt write-off drive, visit your nearest walk-in centre, or email payment.arrangements@capetown.gov.za For more on other relief options, email rates rebate@capetown gov za or indigent relief@capetown gov za Alternatively, dial 0860 103 089 for info on all City assistance

TfimShe Western Cape Provincial Safety Council convened on Wednesday 10 September to strengthen its approach to fighting crime and improving community safety across the province

The meeting, chaired by Premier Alan Winde, brought together a range of stakeholders including the police, municipalities, and academic institutions

The council provides strategic oversight of crime prevention efforts and promotes evidence-based decisions and innovation to address safety challenges

Opening the meeting, Winde acknowledged the ongoing struggle residents face due to high crime rates

“Our residents are feeling the impact of high crime levels more than ever before We must build stronger partnerships with a joint approach to addressing this issue,” he said

SAFETYPLAN

Winde praised the City of Cape Town for recently deploying 700 new metro police officers – the largest investment in personnel in a decade This includes a dedicated neighbourhood deployment for each ward in the city

The council also reviewed progress on the Western Cape Safety Plan, highlighting key focus areas:

Ongoing stakeholder consultation; Strengthening community safety forums; Pushing for greater devolution of policing powers; Addressing police underresourcing in the province; and directing more resources to high-crime areas

Council members agreed that faster implementation of the Safer Cities Cooperation Agreement – signed by the Western Cape Government, national government, the police, and the City of Cape Town – is essential

While some crime categories show modest improvements, Winde noted that many communities, especially those affected by gangsterism, are yet to feel any real difference

“There is a need to intensify crimefighting efforts, but we must also focus on preventing violence,” he added

TACKLINGVIOLENCEANDGANGSTERISM

Following the Safety Council meeting, Winde hosted a digicon discussing violence prevention strategies such as the Violence Prevention Unit (VPU), managed by the provincial Department of Health and Wellness

The VPU uses data from healthcare facilities to develop targeted interventions addressing the root causes of violence in communities

The digicon also featured a discussion on the provincial government's latest Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) report for 2025'26 This legislated report aims to shape policing strategies and guide the allocation of resources

Key findings and recommendations

“Ourresidentsarefeelingthe impactofhighcrimelevelsmore thaneverbefore.
- Alan Winde

included:

. Budget and Resources:

The province continues to face chronic underfunding despite high crime levels

Recommendation: Allocate funding based on crime severity and community needs

. Human Resources: Police staffing has declined, even as the population grows In some hotspots, officer-to-resident ratios reach 1:962

Recommendation: Fill vacancies, revise recruitment and training models

. Infrastructure and Equipment: Several police stations are in poor condition and face shortages in vehicles Recommendation: Upgrade facilities, decentralise servicing and modernise technology

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, noted that despite these challenges, the police in the Western Cape have recognised the value of the PNP report and is using its recommendations to improve service delivery and strategic interventions

ORGANISEDCRIME

The Premier’s special guest at the digicon was Mark Shaw, Executive Director of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime –the world’s largest organised crime think tank With one of its 14 global observatories based in Cape Town, the organisation is well-acquainted with local challenges

“It is not only the Western Cape that is affected by organised crime and gangsterism This is a huge challenge globally,” said Shaw

“We need a strategic, joined-up response We need to work together to bring together all the resources we can in a coordinated way " He outlined six recommendations for fighting organised crime:

. Ensure strong political will;

. Develop a clear and unified strategy;

. Disrupt criminal financial networks, including through the South African Revenue Service;

. Address resourcing gaps;

. Prioritise the removal of illegal firearms; and . Build community resilience to reduce the influence of gangs

Winde concluded, “Ultimately, we must prevent violence by building a safer society from the ground up ” . Visit https://youtu.be/SKxfLk72_S0 to watch a recording of the digicon

City to clamp down on illegal angling

The City is calling on the public to help protect Rosendal dam in Durbanville by respecting existing no-fishing regulations Despite clear signage and regular patrols, illegal fishing continues to pose a serious threat to wildlife and undermine ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the area

The dam supports a variety of indigenous bird species such as cormorants, cattle egrets and Egyptian geese, as well as indigenous plants forming part of the larger aquatic ecosystem Conserving this biodiversity is essential to the City’s broader environmental goals and community wellbeing

Recent events have underscored the need to stamp out unregulated angling in Cape Town’s sensitive local ecosystems At Rosendal dam, a cormorant was found dead, suspended from a tree by fishing line. The same fate nearly befell an Egyptian goose at Sonstraal dam shortly thereafter, although the bird managed to return to the water

Don’t become ‘catch of the day’ Fishing at undesignated sites and without a valid permit is illegal According to City and CapeNature policy, all anglers must obtain a CapeNature recreational fishing licence Residents wishing to fish legally in the greater Durbanville region are encouraged to get a permit and fish only at designated City sites, such as Doordekraal dam in Bellville This serves to protect both fish populations and other, dependent species in the ecosystem Law Enforcement officers will be on patrol, and those breaking the law will be fined.

* If you witness illegal fishing or come across injured or deceased animals at any of the dams in Area North, contact Recreation and Parks at rp.enquiries@capetown.gov.za, or report it directly to Law Enforcement on 021 480 7700 Information about the permitting process is also available from the email above

Angling at nature’s expense: Illegal angling at Rosendal and other dams is inflicting significant damage on local ecosystems, causing tragic biodiversity losses The image of a cormorant found dead at Rosendal dam, suspended from a tree by fishing line, is a distressing reminder of this

City’s keeping an eye on Milnerton

air

To safeguard residents against any potential harmful exposure to hydrogen sulphide in the Milnerton lagoon area, the City has parked a mobile air quality monitoring station at the canoe club to take ongoing readings.

An air quality monitoring station is in operation at Milnerton lagoon as part of the City’s broader efforts to restore the lagoon environment Air quality results will also be shared with the public.

Initially placed at the Woodbridge Island complex in February, the monitoring station has now been moved to a permanent location in the parking area of the Milnerton canoe club The mobile minilaboratory is equipped with a continuous air quality analyser for the full-time measuring of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) levels – the gas responsible for the rotten egg odour sometimes experienced in the area. Readings are taken every 10 to 15 seconds. Data is automatically stored and analysed to assess exposure against international standards

Since installation, the technology has helped Scientific Services detect varying levels of H2S in the area While foul odours may be experienced at times, 100 days of data indicate that there were no exceedances of the World Health Organization’s recommended maximum of 150 micrograms per 24 hours The City utilises the WHO guideline as South Africa does not have its own H2S air quality standard

Atlantis neig watch all kitt

In July, the City enhanced the capabilities of the Oasis neighbourhood watch in Atlantis by providing the 27-member team with equipment such as bodycams, traffic control lights, LED vehicle lights and night vision goggles In 2025/26, more accredited neighbourhood watches across town will receive assistance to the tune of nearly R4,4 million via ward allocations In addition to equipment handovers, the City’s 16-year-old support programme for neighbourhood watches also includes training and skills development in areas such as

Watching out for our watches: The Atlantis is now better equipped to walk the beat th night vision goggles and the like Ald JP S Security, was there when the group receive

What is H2S?

H2S is a so-called ‘nuisance gas’ due to its characteristic odour, even at extremely low concentrations The gas is colourless and flammable, and toxic when found in high concentrations in confined spaces It is typically found in environments such as sewer systems, oil and gas industries, and as a by-product of certain industrial processes

No secrets

The City is also engaging the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment as well as the South African Weather Service to publish the H2S readings on the South African Air Quality Information System (SAAQIS) platform for public access This will give the public realtime access to the data, either via SAAQIS’s smartphone app or website (https://saaqis environment gov za/)

The Milnerton facility is the City’s fourteenth air quality monitoring station. The others making up the administration’s citywide air quality monitoring network are at Athlone, Atlantis, Bellville South, Bothasig, Cape Town Foreshore, Goodwood, Khayelitsha, Molteno, Plattekloof, Somerset West, Potsdam, Table View and Wallacedene

Opening up the opera world: The City and the Cape Town Opera chorus hosted four concerts in the communities of Gugulethu, Woodstock, Pinelands and Kuils River in June and July The events unlocked the opera experience for local audiences, taking it out of the traditional theatre space and bringing it to residents where they live The 45-minute performances included traditional African spirituals and operatic music More concerts are planned, so do keep an eye on your community noticeboard For more on the chorus, see www capetownopera co za

Atlantis helps pick PV’s name

The City’s first utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Atlantis is nearing completion By the end of the year, 12 850 solar panels will start to power the local grid in the area

To make the plant truly part of the Atlantis community, local residents were asked to help choose a name for the installation. The winner will be announced at an on-site ceremony in December

The R200 million solar plant project has brought about significant upskilling of local labour as well as business opportunities in the renewable-energy sector

The tribute came just days after an extensive multi-agency search ended sadly, when Howes’ body was found offshore between Bloubergstrand and Dassen Island

family raised the alarm

His kite and board were located on Monday morning, and later that day a private yacht assisting in the search recovered his body

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), together with Metro Rescue, diving units, fishing vessels, and volunteers, coordinated the search Neighbourhoodwatch groups, coast watchers and fellow kite surfers also played a vital role in shoreline patrols

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon commended the effort “Family, friends, coast watchers, neighbourhood-watch groups and the local kite-boarding community assisted tirelessly with shoreline searches We commend the extensive efforts by all involved that helped bring closure for the family ”

TRIBUTEONTHEWATER

The Small Bay paddle out brought together fellow kite surfers, friends and supporters, with dozens forming a circle in the ocean to celebrate Howes’ life Flowers were placed in the water as a symbol of remembrance

One fellow surfer, James Ryland, said: “Graham wasn’t just an incredible kite surfer; he was the kind of person who

lifted everyone around him Today was about celebrating that energy ”

Another participant, Lindy Morris, added: “Out here, on the water he loved, we felt connected to him one last time It’s the way he would have wanted us to say goodbye ”

For many the event was also about the strength of the local community Kyle Slade, a kite surfer, said: “This is what makes our community special In times of heartbreak, we come together, just as we did when searching for him ”

Showing the Vygekraal some LUW

The Vygekraal river upgrade forms part of the City’s Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) programme

The section to be upgraded flows from Jakes Gerwel Drive through Nantes Park between Bridgetown Silvertown and Kewtown, towards the N2 The project scope will also include a small section of the Blomvlei and Jakkalsvlei rivers

The aim is to increase the river’s capacity to carry water, reinforce and stabilise its banks, and create a safer, more functional river corridor This will help protect nearby infrastructure, reduce the risk of flooding, and support local biodiversity

To this end, the City will be submitting a water use application in terms of section 21 of the National Water Act to allow for sediment and vegetation management, erosion control, and maintenance of stormwater infrastructure.

The push for housing is urgent and nationally important yet the development has sparked alarm for its potential threat to public safety, ecological integrity and legal compliance

ANUCLEARSAFETYRISK

Erf 1117 lies within the 5-16 km radius of Koeberg’s UPZ, a zone where national regulations demand rigorous evacuation modelling before any major population increase No such modelling has been submitted for this land

“The dangers are not hypothetical,” said Collins “During unrest on the DunoonMalibongwe corridor, a key evacuation route, roads were blocked and impassable If it can occur during protests it can certainly do so during an emergency Concentrating thousands of households here without proven evacuation feasibility is reckless, unlawful and violates the National Nuclear Regulator’s mandate to protect public safety ” S id l l id t M k H tt “W

One, Andre van Wyk, said: “The process feels like a fait accompli Residents’ inputs are being sidelined while decisions seem already made to benefit private interests ”

POLITICALANDREGULATORYPRESSURE

Freedom Front Plus councillor Pieter Jansen van Vuuren recently called on the City to provide clarity about developments near Koeberg, including Erf 1117 and a hazardous-waste site near Melkbosstrand He highlighted that the proposed housing density of 30 000 people would be five to six times higher than surrounding areas, violating NNR guidelines for low-density development within the UPZ “The safety of residents must always come first Until proper risk and environmental assessments are made public development here should not proceed ”

When Carla van der Burgh, call sign FR23, joined Community Medics in 2021 she had just wrapped-up her university studies and was eager to give back Signing up both as an Emergency First Aid Responder (EFAR) and a dispatcher operating the emergency call line, she quickly proved to be a valuable member of the team Today she also serves on the organisation’s management committee as Clinical Portfolio Manager, helping guide training and quality of care

“Carla is the kind of volunteer every organisation dreams of,” said Craig von Essen, spokesperson for Community Medics “She’s passionate, professional and brings an enormous heart to everything she does, whether she’s on call as a responder, managing clinical standards or simply showing up for her fellow volunteers ”

Just weeks after joining, Van der Burgh experienced first-hand what it meant to have Community Medics by her side One of her family members needed urgent medical attention, and within minutes volunteers arrived at their door

That moment of support cemented her commitment

“It made me realise this is so much more than just volunteering; it’s about being there when people need it most, no matter who they are ”

FRIENDSHIPINUNIFORM

During her induction Van der Burgh met Michelle Selipsky, another dedicated volunteer who has since become one of her closest friends The two are known as something of a dynamic duo, often responding to emergencies side by side “Community Medics isn’t just about saving lives,” Von Essen pointed out, “it’s about the friendships and support networks that form within the team Carla and Michelle are perfect examples ”

AMIDWIFEWITHAMISSION

Outside her volunteer role Van der Burgh works as a midwife, a profession she proudly called “the best job in the world ” She is passionate about providing holistic care to new mothers, supporting them through one of life’s most profound experiences “Helping parents welcome their babies into the world is incredibly special,” she said “Every birth is

NationalWills Week:Don’t stallonyourwill

Every year during National Wills Week thousands of South Africans take advantage of the opportunity to have a basic will drafted for free Yet many still put it off, assuming they’ll “get to it one day.”

The truth? Dying without a will can leave your loved ones facing unnecessary stress, delays and financial hardship, if something should happen to you

With National Wills Week taking place from 15 to 19 September, Marnus Mostert, franchise principal and certified financial planner at Consult by Momentum, challenges South Africans to stop procrastinating and take the opportunity to get their affairs in order

“Many of us are ill-prepared for death

While no-one likes to think about dying, the reality is that if you do not make provisions in time, those you love most in the world will suffer the consequences of your lack of preparation ”

Mostert shares all the questions you should be asking yourself when it comes to dying

WHATDOIWANTTOHAPPENIFIWERETOPASS AWAY?

Should the worst come to be, what are your wishes? What do you want to leave for your family? What will become of your assets? These are all questions that you need to ask yourself, and once you know the answers these need to be clearly laid out in a Last Will and Testament

Having a will ensures your assets are distributed according to your wishes after your death, preventing family disputes and ensuring that loved ones are provided for

In South Africa, without a valid will your estate will be distributed according to the laws of intestate succession, which may not align with your intentions

YOURWILLNEEDSTO:

.be in writing;

.nominate your beneficiaries;

.nominate guardians for minor children;

.appoint an executor to manage your estate;

.specify how your assets should be distributed;

.specify if you want to be cremated or buried and whether you are (or want to be) an organ donor;

.make provision for a trust, if required;

.nominate trustees and

.be co-signed by independent witnesses to ensure compliance with the law

Mostert highlights that while free online tools exist to help you draw up a will it is worth the money to have it drawn up for you by a professional, such as your financial adviser or lawyer

“There are specific requirements involved in drawing up a will as well as its signing, and if you fail to adhere to these you risk your will being contested or deemed invalid

“A professional helps you consider things such as tax implications, various methods to cover estate fees and other associated costs as well as the liquidity of your family on your passing, helping to keep food on the table and having the cash

at hand to pay creditors ”

DOIUNDERSTANDTHEEXTENTOFTHECOSTS ASSOCIATEDWITHPASSINGAWAY?

Spoiler alert: It’s probably a lot more than you realise Mostert said the common estate administration fees in South Africa typically consist of executor fees (up to 3,5% of the estate’s value ex VAT), conveyancing fees, advertising fees, master fees, other miscellaneous taxes and estate duties (20% on the first R30 million and at a rate of 25% on the dutiable value of the estate above R30 million)

“These fees can significantly reduce the assets left to beneficiaries, especially if the estate isn’t liquid A lack of planning for these costs could force beneficiaries to sell assets such as properties or investments to settle the fees, which could diminish the estate’s value or impact the family’s financial security, he added, “which is why sound financial planning is so important ”

HOWDOIENSURETHEREISMONEYAVAILABLE TOCOVERTHESECOSTS,ANDTHATMYFAMILY ISNOTFINANCIALLYIMPACTED?

There are a few avenues, but one of the best ways to ensure sufficient cashflow to cover these administrative expenses is to have a life insurance policy in place, said Mostert

“Life insurance provided financial support to a family after the policyholder’s death It offered the necessary liquidity to settle fees and taxes, while also covering any debts they may owe as well as ensuring the living expenses of their family are met

“Consider the amount of coverage needed, who your beneficiaries will be, and the affordability of your monthly premium It’s essential to align the insurance benefits with the overall estate plan to avoid liquidity issues

“For instance, if the estate requires liquidity to settle debts, the beneficiary should not be another person but rather the estate Consulting a financial adviser will help you to distinguish between what the estate requires and the needs of the beneficiaries ”

WHEREDOISTART?

Start by consulting a financial adviser who can guide you through the process List your assets, debts and beneficiaries, and consider your family’s future financial needs

It’s also helpful to understand the potential costs involved, such as estate duties and executor fees

A professional can assist in drawing up a legally binding will and ensuring that your life insurance and other financial planning aspects align with your estate plan and any other goals for your family, such as education

“The key is to take it one step at a time, focusing first on the most critical elements,” Mostert said

Gerhardcodes cosmicdetectors

As part of an exciting collaboration with the University of Cape Town's (UCT) physics department, Gerhard Vosloo, a Grade 10 learner at Parklands College, Cai Bridges and Dr Andre Rossouw recently met with Prof Andy Buffler, Dr Tanya Hutton and PhD student Miles Kidson on advanced radiation detection systems

UCT's physics department is at the forefront of applied nuclear-physics research, for example contributing to cancer treatment through proton therapy, enhancing PET scanner technology, and monitoring radiation exposure in frequent flyers such as pilots and cabin crew

The UCT Proton Therapy Initiative aims to re-establish proton therapy in Southern Africa as a cutting-edge form of cancer treatment, highly effective for a wide range of tumours and considered superior to traditional radiotherapy Gerhard focused on coding the detectors using the MaxIQ platform, while UCT physics developed the hardware, including neutron detectors and Geiger counters

This forms part of the Cosmic On Air citizen science project, which aims to measure radiation exposure on board aircraft UCT physics will send these detectors using Gerhard's code on a Nasa High Altitude Balloon in October and to the International Space Station in 2026 "It was an incredible experience to be part of a project with real-world impact, and I'm grateful to MaxIQ Space, UCT physics and Dr Rossouw for this

Melodies to heal hearts at Rocking4Cancer

Founded in 2013, Rocking4Cancer has grown into an iconic annual event, raising funds and awareness for cancer-related causes and other vital organisations

This year’s milestone 10th show will be hosted at West End, Cape Town on Friday 3 October at 20:00, with proceeds going to St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care, which is celebrating 90 years of service

Themed “Masquerade”, this year’s event will feature performances by a wide range of local artists, including Dr Jules, Berry Trytsman, Daylin Sass, Novocaine, Sade Von S, Tiana, Zoë Avontuur, B12 Boy Band, and DJ Hielin.

The first 100 attendees will receive complimentary goodie bags, and there will be a few additional surprises on the night St Joseph’s provides medical, emotional, and spiritual support to children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions, from birth to age 17 CEO Christelle Cornelius says the support from Rocking4Cancer will help them continue offering specialised care to young patients and their families.

One example is a young girl known as Angel, who arrived at the facility in 2021 with complex medical needs, including a feeding tube and tracheostomy Through consistent therapy, including hydrotherapy to encourage speech, she has made steady progress—now eating on her own and beginning to speak in short sentences. In the baby ward, children with severe conditions receive palliative care in a calm and supportive environment

Families facing uncertain futures are offered counselling and guidance by the clinical and social work teams.

Some children arrive severely underweight and weak but gradually regain strength through the centre’s multidisciplinary approach

Over the years, Rocking4Cancer has supported several organisations including St Luke’s Hospice, CHOC, The Sunflower Fund, Love Your Nuts, and the Breast Care Foundation
