mergency crews battled a fast-moving fire that tore through Site 5 in Dunoon on Friday 9 January, after multiple informal structures caught alight shortly after 10:25. The blaze spread rapidly through the densely built settlement, driven by strong southeasterly winds and a heavy fuel load. According to City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse,
the first arriving officer immediately requested additional resources due to the scale and intensity of the fire. A total of 12 fire engines and water tankers were deployed, with operations coordinated by an Incident Management Team (IMT) Type 4. “The strong winds and fuel load are presenting a challenge to firefighting efforts,” Carelse said, adding that conditions remained volatile throughout the day.
