sewer line gave way last month (July), marking the 13th such incident in the area since 2023. Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for Water and Sanitation, said the City was finalising critical documentation to ensure the site was safe for all
stakeholders before any physical repair work began. “Physical work will commence as soon as all internal processes, such as the tender scope, deviation report, purchase order process and health and safety specification and risk
assessments, are finalised,” Badroodien told the newspaper. “The completion of the healthand-safety specification and risk assessments is critical, as no work may begin without it to ensure the safety of all stakeholders, including the
public.” The latest collapse once again highlighted the vulnerability of the 50-year-old, 5 m-deep fibrecement bulk-sewer pipeline, which has suffered repeated failures due to sulphuric acid corrosion and infrastructure fatigue. TO PAGE 2
