eavy rainfall and flash flooding once again brought disruption to parts of Cape Town last week, with low-lying areas in Table View, Milnerton and other surrounding communities experiencing waterlogged roads, overflowing canals and rising concerns among residents. According to the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate the ongoing downpours have pushed several vleis, rivers and retention ponds to their limits. The resultant overflow has caused stormwater systems to back up, forcing water onto roads and into nearby properties. “The sheer volume of ongoing rainfall is causing vleis, rivers and canals to reach capacity,” said Rob Quintas, Mayco member for Urban Mobility. “This causes water to back-up in the stormwater system and onto our roads which then act as water conduits.” The situation has prompted warnings for motorists to avoid

flooded roads, steer clear of low-water crossings and remain alert to the possibility of sudden road closures. The City’s teams are monitoring pressure points and conducting assessments as conditions allow. Humanitarian organisation Gif of the Givers has been called out to multiple flooded areas in the city last week. “The first urgent appeals and footage were received from Lwandle and Nomzamo, where close to 1 000 residents have been severely affected,” the organisation stated. “Requests for help have since flooded in from multiple areas, including Khayelitsha, Du Noon, Mfuleni, Gugulethu, Philippi, Philippi East, Mitchells Plain, Chris Nissen Park, Macassar and Nyanga.
