Melkbosstrand resident Lee-ann de Vries said theincreasefeels like apunishment for people who depend on public transport every day.
“A R500 increasemight not seem like much to decision-makers, but for an ordinary working family it is enormous. We already budget every cent for groceries, school fees, electricityand fuel.Now we are expected to simply find another R500 every month just to get to work. MyCiTi hasalways been promoted as an affordable, reliable service, but this increasecompletely changesthat. It feels unfairthatresidents who have supported theservicefor years are now expected to carry suchaheavyfinancial burden.”
Table View resident AnoHendricks said commutersare being forced to pay more withoutreceiving any additional benefits.
“What frustratesmethe most is that nothing aboutthe serviceisimproving, yet thepricehas goneupdramatically overnight. Most of us use MyCiTibecause we don't have another affordable option. We leave home before sunrise, spend longhours travelling andwork hard just to makeends meet. A50% increase is simply unrealistic. It sends themessage that ordinary commuters must continue absorbingrisingcosts while our salaries remain thesame.”
Milnertonresident Lauren Andrews said many households have reached breaking pointfinancially.
“Everythingisbecomingmore expensive at thesame time. Rent hasincreased, food pricesare climbing, electricity is more expensive and nowtransport too. Families cannot continue stretching already tight budgets. For many of us, MyCiTi isn't a convenience —it'show we get to work, take our childrentoschooland attend medical appointments. This increase makes everyday life even harder and risks pushingpeople into financial distress.”
Melkbosstrand resident David Willemse said theCity should have consulted residents before implementing such a significantincrease.
“If the City is facing higher operating costs, commuters understand that costs sometimes need to change. What people are asking foristransparency and proper consultation. Adecisionthat affects thousands of workingpeople shouldn't happenwithoutmeaningful engagement. Residents deserve to understand exactly whysuchalarge increase is necessary and whetherevery alternative was
considered before placing the burden on commuters.”
PUBLICPARTICIPATION
Those behind the campaign are calling on the City of Cape Town to suspend the R500 monthly pass increase and to review the fare structure through meaningful public participation.
They are further demanding the introduction of commuter relief for workers, learners, and low-income passengers, the publication of aclear breakdown of cost calculations, subsidies, and diesel-related increases, as well as urgent public engagement sessions in affected communities.
Thepetition is directed at Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas, and the City of Cape Town Council.
In reply to amedia enquiry, the City of Cape Towndefended its decision to increase public transport fares by 50%, saying the hike is necessary to keep the service financially sustainable.
When asked why the increase is so steep, Quintas said the City had been absorbing rising fuel costs for months.
“The City has absorbed the rising costs of fuel for many months at an additional cost of R9,1 million per month. We have to keep the service sustainable in order to avoid cutting routes or narrowing down the service,”hesaid.
Asked how the City arrived at the 50% figure, Quintas did not provide adetailed breakdown of the cost calculations but pointed to diesel price increases as akey driver.
On thequestion of how low-income residentsare expected to afford the increase, and what the City's message is to poor commuters who can no longer afford to travel to work, Quintas acknowledged the burden on vulnerable households.
“We have lowered tariffs in the past when therehave been consecutive months of fuel cost reductions, and should the diesel price continue to decrease we will definitely revisit the fares, as we are well aware of the impact that transport costs have on low-income households in particular,” he said.
TheCitydid not directly respond to calls for apublished breakdown of cost calculations, subsidies, and diesel-related increases, or for urgent public engagement sessions in affected communities, both of which form part of the community petition submitted to the City.

Parklands residents were urgedtoremain calm last week after awidely circulated social media graphic called on people to take part in aMarch and Marchdemonstration in the area.
The campaign has made headlines in recent weeks after similar demonstrations were organised in other partsof Cape Town,including Claremont and Sea Point, whereprotesters raisedconcerns about illegal immigration.
While the issue has sparked widespread public debate, authorities have repeatedly warned that any demonstrations must remain peaceful and within the law.
Ward 107 councillor Jonathan Mills has appealed to residents not to panic, saying local law enforcement agencies and security partners are well prepared to monitor the situation.

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Station 18 in Melkbosstrand has expressed heartfelt thanksto everyone who took partinits recent Solstice Swim, describing the event as avibrant celebrationofcommunityspirit andsupport for lifesaving work along the coast.
Organiserssaid the morning was filled with energy,laughter and determination as brave swimmers took to the cold winter water whilesupporters cheered from the shoreline, creating what they described as atruly memorablecommunity gathering.
“There were chilly toes, big smiles, and plentyoflaughs —exactly what awinter swim shouldbe,” the NSRI Station 18 team said. “Thank you for supporting NSRI Station 18 and for showing once again how special our community is.See you at the next one.”

Cape Town’s final budgetof the current mayoral term was adopted on Monday amid sharp divisions in Council, with Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis hailing fiveyears of infrastructure investment as aturning point for the City while opposition parties condemned the increases as unaffordable.
Hill-Lewis described the R87.8 billion budget as adefining moment, arguing that Cape Town had changed trajectoryafter years of infrastructurestrain. But opposition councillors painted astarkly different picture, one of rising electricity, water and sanitation costs outpacing inflation, missed housing targets, and findings flagged by the Auditor General.
The budget,already revised followinga courtruling that found the City’s method of calculating fixed charges unlawful, passed despite unanimous rejection from opposition benches, where speakers warnedthat ordinary residents, pensioners and the poor would bear thegreatest burdenofthe increases
Tabling the budget for final adoption at Council, Hill-Lewis said, “Five years ago, there was much of this City’s infrastructure grid that was under severe strain. The warning lights on the dashboardwere flashing bright orange. Five years later, we have changed trajectory.”
He said every major infrastructure project is either under construction or complete, with sewer spills alreadydown 30%, wetlands beingcleaned, and

new publictransport projects under waytocarry tens of thousands morepassengers daily.
Hill-Lewis said the City worked hard to ensurenocapital spending wascut as aresult.
“We cannotafford to makecuts to our capitalbudget,” he said, adding that the finaldraft had infact seen the capitalportion increase marginally by R50 million.
He said anyreduction in infrastructure spending, whether to pipe replacement, wastewater upgrades, electricity grid investment, roadrepairs or waste facilities would set Cape Town on the same downward trajectoryas otherSouth African cities.
OPPOSITIONUNITEDINREJECTION
During the ensuing discussions oppositionparties, through their council representatives, strongly rejected the budget

“This is notreflected in our communities where we have daily sewer overflows. The mayor boasts aboutwinter readiness, but we areflooded. The electricityincrease is unaffordable. Someresidents have to cookover open fires becausewecannot afford the current rates.”
Referring to the City’s 2024/25 reported audit outcome, and the City’s failuretoachieve aclean audit, Cheslyn Steenberg from
thePatriotic Alliance (PA) said, “We cannot,ingood conscience, support abudget thatasks people to paymore when money are being mismanaged.”
TheCity received an unqualifiedaudit with findings, mainly linked to procurement issues.

Pieter Jansen van Vuuren from the Freedom Front Plus said while the City may highlight increasedpovertyreliefthresholds andamodest 2% reductioninthe rates-in-therandfor the2026/2027 financial year, thereality on the ground tells astory of rising costs that will impoverish ordinary salary earners and loyal ratepayers.
“Therecent generalproperty valuation processhas led to asignificantincrease in property values, particularly for middle-and higher-income households.Thismeans higher rates bills for homeowners whoseincomeshave simply not kept pace with these increases. Furthermore, this sharp increase in property valuationsthreatens to excludemanybeneficiaries and pensioners from essential
electricity rebates,”hesaid.
He noted that the fixed electricitycharges for properties valued above R1 million are set to rise to R424.30 per month, whichfollows asubstantial increasefrom R281.78 to R390.87 permonth last year, representing an additional 8.5% increase on topofa38% hike.
“Our current rates relief system is clearly inadequate, and many residents will simply be unable to absorb theseescalating fixed service charges, which have increased by as much as 68.3% since the 2024/25 financial year These increases are completely beyondthe reach of ordinary salary earners, whose wage increases do not come close to matching such excessive tax and tariff hikes.”

Delmaine Cottee of the ANC highlighted the impact of the electricityincreases, noting that residents currently pay R100 for 25 units, on top of fixed charges. After the increases take effect, that same R100 will only yield 22 units. He pointed out that most residents need to purchase R100 of electricityevery second day, makingthe increase asignificant burden.Cottee added that 70% of pensioners’ income is already consumed by electricity costs, and that the newly introduced waterand sewage charges compound the hardship further

More than 5000 learners participatedinthe City of Cape Town’s substance-abuse prevention interventions in just nine months, with demand far outstripping what was planned.
The milestone comes as World Drug Dayismarked today (26 June), thisyear’s theme centering on prevention, which is also one of four corefocus areasofthe City’s Alcohol and Other Drug Strategy
The Community, Arts and Culture Development Directorate’s substance-use prevention programme was planned for 3500 participants across themetropole over anine-month period. Attendance reached 5193, with several schools requesting that programmesbeextended to includemore learners.
Mayco member forCommunity Services and Health Francine Higham said the figures reflected an urgent community need.
“We cannot ignorethe direct link between substance abuse andthe violence and crime that plague many of our communities. That is why prevention programmes such as these are so important. They do more than educate young people about dangersofsubstance use; they also address issues like bullying, peer pressure, self-worth andmakinggood decisions. In several instances schools askedthatthe programmes be extended to include more learners, hence the higher attendance. The Substance Use Prevention Unit runs three key programmes: Driving my Future, Essentially Me and Family Strengthening.
Ayear ago the family-strengthening initiative was expanded to include an intervention specifically for adolescents, called the Sinovuyo Teens programme Thenine-week programmetargets caregiversofteens aged between 10 and 17, teaching positive parenting strategies and helping teens develop copingskills and familyproblem-solving skills.It also strengthens family communication and relationships, promotesnon-violent discipline and stress management, and draws on communitysupport to create a safe, nurturing home environment.

While thousands of Capetonians will lace up theirwalking shoes for this year’s Blisters for Bread fun walk, volunteers willbehardat work behind the scenes ensuring the event runs smoothly.
For over 40 years, the Lions Club have given their time as marshals at the annual fundraising event, which raises money for the PeninsulaSchool Feeding Association (PSFA).
ICONIC
Blisters for Bread, one of Cape Town’s most iconic charitywalks, has been fighting childhood hunger for 58 years.
This year the event will take place on Sunday 16 August and withonly 10 000 entries available, participants can choose between a5km or 10km route along the Sea PointPromenade.
Entries cost R125, enough to provide breakfast and lunch to 23 children for a day.
The 10km walk starts at 07:30 and the 5km route at 08:00, with medals and refreshments provided to all participants.
Each year around 130 Lions Club members takeuppositions along the route guiding participants, ensuring theirsafety andhanding out medals to those who

successfully completethe race.
Former Lions Club president John Houston,who has personally volunteered at theevent for 30 years, said supporting Blisters for Bread alignsperfectly with oneofthe organisation’s coremissions.
“One ofthe Lions Club’s pillars is hunger relief, andBlisters for Bread falls perfectly into that category,” he said.
Houstonsaid members willingly volunteer their time because they understand the impact the event has on children facing food insecurity.
“Every cent raised goes directly to feeding schoolchildren. Ienjoy attending theevent andassisting people. Ibelieve it’s fora worthy cause,”hesaid.
Despitethe early starts andlonghours on their feet, Houstonsaid the atmosphere makesthe experience worthwhile.
“We do it voluntarily anditisfun.
There is agreat sense of camaraderie and satisfaction in knowingyou’re helpingto make adifference.”
The Lion’sClub is alsoencouraging community members who would liketo get involved and serve as marshals in future events to contact the organisation.
