ommunity members in Table View and Bloubergstrand have voiced shock and anger after a man accused of murdering a car guard was released on R5 000 bail last week. The accused, Neo Malignant (30) from Cape Town central, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 3 September, where his bail application was granted despite the state opposing his release. The case has been postponed to 26 November for further investigation.
WADDLE FOR A CAUSE Mrs Universe SA 2025-’26 finalist Wendy Beneke joined the Waddle Walk in Table View this past weekend. This was a charity fundraiser led by 12-year-old Alex du Plessis in support of The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) and endangered African Penguin. WOMAN RELEASED, CHARGES WITHDRAWN Malignant was arrested on 31 August along with a 24-year-old woman after police traced the pair to a residence in Cape Town. CCTV footage allegedly showed the two suspects fleeing Marine Circle, where the fatal stabbing took place in the early hours of that morning. While Malignant now faces a charge of murder, the case against the woman was withdrawn before court proceedings, and she was freed. guard, who was found with a stab wound under his arm. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene. Detectives quickly secured CCTV footage from nearby properties, which they say was instrumental in identifying and tracing the suspects. Ward councillor Jonathan Mills criticised the bail decision, saying: “It’s truly outrageous that someone caught on CCTV murdering another person be released on R5 000 bail. The courts are failing us on this, and if they blame lack of space in prisons, then Correctional Services are failing us too.” RESIDENTS REACT WITH ANGER Residents have expressed their frustration at what they see as a justice system that does not serve victims. “A man lost his life trying to earn a living, yet the suspect is already out on bail. It feels like justice is slipping away,” said Mark Naidoo, a Bloubergstrand resident. TO PAGE 2
