Anslin Gysman, from Kuils River and aUniversity of the Western Cape human resources professional has become the voice behind the Springboks’ new anthem “They Don’t Know What We Know,” transforming aviralAI-generated song into an emotional anthem for South Africanrugby.

Gysman, a30-year-old singer whogrewupinPhilippi but residesinKuils Rivernow, works full-time in UWC’s payroll department, was selected by SA Rugby after an audition process that followedthe viral success of an AI-created version of thesong.

Gysman is awell-knownSouth African singer, songwriter, and radio host known for his emotive,faith-based music and soul-stirring performances.Based in Cape Town, he has risen to prominence through TheVoice SouthAfrica andhis work with TheVocal Associates. He recently won the “Inspirasie-mens met Kuier” award at the Netwerk24 Smaakmaker-toekennings.

“I didn’t even curate an expectation that I’d getthe job considering all theincredible people whowereinvited to audition. Ihad to sing for my life,” Gysman said in an interviewwith UWC

The journeybegan when content creator Skiwi used artificial intelligencetogenerate theoriginal version, which gained significanttraction online.

SA Rugby then invited singers to audition for ahuman-performed version

“I received acall from SA Rugby inviting me to an audition for the song. They shared the linktothe AI version, and Ifell in love with it immediately,” Gysman explained.

Despite his musical success, Gysmanremains committed to hisacademic aspirations. He holds an undergraduate degree in linguistics and multiple postgraduate qualifications in human resources, advanced taxation, strategic finance and informatics. He is currently completing another master’s degreeand plans to begin aPhD this year. “Singing was never my dream. It has always been a passion of mine,” he said.

At UWC, colleagues describe himasquiet and reserved. “I’m actually very quiet,” he admits.

Gysman’smusical journey began in childhood at church, and he later became afinalist on season three of The Voice SA He is also aradio host, content creator and supportsthe DHL Stormers.

The anthem project became deeply personal for him during therecording process. “I cried real tears because it felt as if Icould sense the healing and restorative properties of thissong for South Africa,” he said.

“I thought about every boy from the Cape Flats who looks like me and dreams like me, Ithought about every mother who would stop at nothing to see theirkids succeed, Isaw my grandmother, who was obsessed with rugby, cheer me on and my late uncle who would quietly stand in the crowd feeling proud of me.”

For Gysman, the anthem representsmore than rugby enthusiasm. “The song is a beacon of hope, aheart’sposture and abold declaration of hope for us as acountry,” he said.

“I realised what agreat moment it is, not only for me but for SouthAfrica, to have something on the airwaves that people can hold onto as asymbol of resilience —that’sincredibly powerful.”

Thesinger, who has performed at rugby fan malls during World Cup seasons, described the opportunity as “the greatest honour to serve my country in thiscapacity.”

Looking ahead, Gysman plans to continue his academic pursuits whilst developing his music career, with new releases planned alongside his PhDstudies. His advice to aspiring artists reflectshis own journey: “The reward for your labour isn’t overnight. Nothing that is meant for you will miss you. It will locate you when the time is right and elevate you in aseason that has been set aside for you.”

The City’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) programme officially launches in April,following the appointmentofacontractor to replace about 83 000 mechanical water meterswith smart, modern metering technology

Almost R1,1 billion is beinginvested in the first phase of the AMIproject, which will result in early detectionof water leaks, automated system readings for customers and easy tracking ofdaily waterconsumption on their properties.

“The Water and Sanitation Directorate is excited to begin roll-out of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI) Programme,”said Mayco member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien

“Thisisalarge-scale initiative to enhance water management and service delivery using modernwater metering technology

Over the next decade more than 680 000 of the City’s existing mechanical water meters will be replaced by smart AMI water meters, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure to move our metering system intoamoremodern digital world.”

The programme is scheduled to be implemented in two phases:

. The first phase will run forthree years from April2026 to February2029, deploying about83000 smartmeters in 170 areas citywide. The R1,1 billion investment hasbeen provisioned forthis phase of the project.

. The second will be to replace the balance of the meters and is currently earmarked to continue up untilJune 2040. This strategic approachaids in coststo be allocated over time, and installation to progress gradually based on available budget.

. Evidence of actual consumption leads to fewerdisputes.

“TheCity has thoughtcarefully about every aspect, including design and durability,” Badroodien said. “The smart AMI watermeters will be equipped with an anti-tamperingmechanism, in the form of alockable protective cover, in an effort to reduce the risk of theft and tampering with theenclosedmeter. Also, data will be transmitted via eSIMtechnology rather than aphysical sim card, which could be removed. Another key feature is that themeteritself, as well as the protective cover, is made from plastic, which has no scrapvalue. In addition, the meter will havethe capability to detect any tilts or movement and an alert will be generated immediately to theCity.

“Thereal value of these smart water meters isn’tintheir material components, butrather in the value of the data that they provide and transmit. It’salso commendablethatthe meter is designed to havea 15-year life span.”

What to expectwhen the meter on your propertyisbeingreplaced:

. Temporary water disruptions the installation team may temporarily turnoff yourwater to remove the old water meter and install the new smart AMI water meter. During the installation process you may experiencelow or no water pressure on yourproperty.

Budget boost for pre-winter stormwater

TheCity has allocated an additional R39 million to ramp up maintenance and repairs of stormwater infrastructureinflood-prone areas. Thework will takeplace over the next few months to preparefor high rainfall events in winter

With the added budget, the City can deploy moreteams and increase its stormwater system cleaning cycles. Theareas for focused intervention wereidentified using data from last year,public reports of flooding, and site visits and investigations by City teams. Stormwater systems in and around informal areasare included.

TheKleinvleicanal is an artificial watercourse that was built in 1990 to drain the eastern parts of the Blue Downs development area and Blackheath. TheDeVilliersStreetsection of the R146 million Trappies sewer upgradeis substantially complete andwas opened in December 2025. TheJoubertStreet and further work phases arescheduled for2026, includingworktoaddressproblems near the Lourens river.Asworkingspace is confined, andsite conditionsare challenging dueto priorincorrect installations, the City is using cured-in-place pipelining to avoid large excavations. This trenchlessmethod involves creatinga sealed lining within the current sewer,restoring it to near-new condition.
