he R27 highway has once again come under scrutiny after a spate of deadly collisions over the past few weeks, leaving multiple people dead and raising serious concerns about safety on what residents are now calling a “death-trap road”. On Wednesday 1 May a fourvehicle pile-up occurred on the R27 heading towards Cape Town, shortly after the Atlantis turn-off near Cape Farms. The incident, which occurred between 15:00 and 16:00 on Friday 26 April, involved two vehicles, one of which caught fire with two people still trapped inside. The third victim was found lying on the road, raising suspicions that the person may have been ejected from the vehicle on impact. While official confirmation was still pending, Weslander’s sister newspaper WeskusNuus reported one of the deceased was believed to be a senior police officer. The identities of the other two victims had yet to be released at the time of printing. A formal inquiry had been lodged with the provincial police office, and investigators remained on the scene late into the night, searching for clues.
