Cape Winelands Airport has received environmental authorisation (EA) from the provincial department of environmental affairs and development planning (DEADP), marking a key step forward in the planned airport expansion.

The authorisation was officially issued last Monday 27 October despite fears of noise pollution, traffic congestion and others The planned expansion of Cape Winelands Airport is expected to be an investment of approximately R8 billion into the economy of the Western Cape, according to a media release by the airport One of the biggest infrastructure projects in the City of Cape Town, it is anticipated to open in 2028

MAJORMILESTONE

This approval marks a major milestone in the progression of the project and authorises the applicant, Capewinelands Aero, to proceed with a phased expansion across 883ha that will transform the existing facility into a major aviation hub complete with terminal buildings, general aviation facilities and extensive supporting infrastructure such as new sewage systems, electricity infrastructure, access roads, stormwater management structures and solar photovoltaic installations

The approval follows an extensive environmental assessment and consultation process undertaken in full compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA)

The authorisation is the culmination of more than two years of dedicated environmental planning and public participation, including four rounds of public consultation, two open days, and over 40 specialist studies assessing environmental, social, and technical factors With this authorisation now in place, the environmental practitioners have 14 days to formally notify all registered interested and affected parties

“The granting of environmental authorisation is an important validation of the extensive work and consultation that has gone into ensuring this project meets the highest environmental and community standards,” says Deon Cloete, managing director of Cape Winelands Airport

NEXTPHASE

The next phase will focus on developing the detailed plans and implementation measures as stipulated by DEADP before any construction-related activities begin

The Cape Winelands Airport expansion project aims to establish a modern, multipurpose regional airport that enhances connectivity, supports economic growth and unlocks new opportunities for trade, tourism, and industry across the Western Cape, according to the media release

The proposed project entails the expansion of the existing Cape Winelands Airport in a phased development approach

This includes the realignment of the A

The Cape Peninsula Informal Traders Forum (CPITF) has strongly condemned what it describes as a "cruel and unnecessary" raid by the City of Cape Town's law enforcement on long-time Goodwood informal trader Ganeef Kamaar

Just before noon on Friday, officers reportedly surrounded Kamaar's freshproduce stall at the Goodwood Mall precinct, confiscating his fruits and vegetables despite ongoing talks between the City's Area Economic Development (AED) department and the forum Kamaar, who has traded at the same spot for four decades first alongside his late father was allegedly told he would have to pay a fine of R5 000 to reclaim his goods According to the CPITF, Kamaar is a legally permitted trader and has operated at the site with municipal approval for years

"This is a grave injustice," said a spokesperson for the CPITF

"The City has allowed countless unpermitted traders to operate across the metro with little action, yet they have

chosen to punish a man who has been part of Goodwood's trading fabric for 40 years

We call for the immediate return of his goods, an apology from the City, and the reinstatement of his right to trade "

The forum said it had been in constant communication with Lance Greyling, the City's chief of area economic development, seeking a resolution when the raid took place

CITYRESPONDS

However, the City has defended its actions, stating that the operation followed repeated warnings to traders operating without permits in the area "The City has received numerous complaints about unpermitted trading near Goodwood Mall," said law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason

"During inspections, officers identified at least eight locations where traders were operating without permits Compliance notices were issued on 10 October, and

Prevent strokes with healthy habits

The provincial department of health and wellness issued a statement recently highlighting the importance of detecting the early signs of a stroke, and ways in which people can prevent it from occurring World Stroke Awareness Day was celebrated on Wednesday 29 October

As part of the awareness the Karl Bremer Hospital, in the statement, highlighted the importance of preventing strokes through knowledge, as well as the vital role played by a multidisciplinary team in supporting stroke survivors and their families

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is reduced or blocked, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients Within minutes brain cells begin to die, making every moment critical

STROKERISKS

While anyone can experience a stroke risks increase with age and family history

Yet many factors remain within our control

Regular physical activity supports healthy blood pressure and circulation, while avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol further protects the cardiovascular system, the department cautioned

Routine health screenings are essential for early detection

“A stroke changes a person’s life overnight and our goal is to make sure every patient receives the support they need to regain dignity and quality of life

“Recovery is not only physical, but also emotional and deeply personal,” said Dr De Vries Basson, head of internal medicine at Karl Bremer Hospital

Since January 2025 the hospital has managed 288 stroke-related patients, the youngest 13 years old

Strokes have traditionally been associated with older patients with multiple comorbidities But Karl Bremer Hospital has noted a shift in recent years

In 2022, the average age of stroke patients at the hospital was 60 years of age

By 2025 that figure had decreased to age 57, indicating a concerning trend of strokes occurring at younger ages It is an important reminder of the need for early recognition of stroke symptoms and immediate medical attention

CHALLENGES

Remember the abbreviation F A S T:

F - Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Ask the person to smile Is their smile uneven?

A - Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms Does one arm drift downward?

S - Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred or strange? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence

T - Time to call emergency Stroke is a medical emergency and every minute counts Call emergency services immediately and note the time when symptoms first appear

The hospital’s stroke-care team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, radiologists and speech therapists, working together to provide comprehensive care from diagnosis to rehabilitation Patients who require extended care are transferred to M7/ M8, an intermediate care facility, which are dedicated stroke units

We thank each one for their unwavering commitment, courage, and excellence,” said Mireille Wenger, provincial minister of health and wellness, at the event Dr Keith Cloete, head of department for the provincial department of health and wellness, also commended the nurses

“At the heart of excellence lies the heart of what we are called to do, to care Today, we celebrate the essence of nursing through four simple but profound truths First, to care about something, this calling You do not stop caring, it is who you are Second, to care for others, to be a caregiver, giving care with compassion often unseen, in those quiet moments between nurse and patient where the true essence of nursing lives Finally, to receive care, because when patients receive care, they receive more than a procedure di ti th i th

Kommentaar // Comments

BULL FLUGTAG SOARS AGAIN: Fun,laughter and high-flying excitement filled the air

Embrace analog to balance digital life

Regarding the letter published on 29 October, it appears that the world has moved from physical childhood slavery to mental childhood slavery Meditation tai chi hiking many sports and activities away from computers help solve this problem I am a software developer with 40 years experience I hike I meditate I do tai chi I wear a 40-year-old watch that doesn’t count steps or tell me things I really don’t need to know On my bike, I don t use a headset or bluetooth

I don’t play computer games There are loads of great board games and there is my favourite activity, being able to have an old fashioned discussion without resorting to Google to check things I asked an electrical engineer friend a question the other day He said have you asked Google? I then emailed my

question to an electrical engineering professor I know, who I studied with in 1982, and he referred me to an electronic engineer who can solve the problem

We need to have digital and analog worlds I still have an old motorcycle with an analog speedometer I dislike these new digital speedometers which my car has, and which give one zero “distance”, zero reference point I live in Milnerton If people can get groups of 10 or more people (scholars included) together, I am willing to run weekly meditation and tai chi classes

People can email me (david@mypowerstation biz) WhatsApp notifications are switched off on my phone as they distract me too much

My personal view is that these activities increase people s brain power and ability to do more and stay

Weekend events gridlock city

I think it s time to say to the City administration: Wat genoeg is, is genoeg!

There is hardly a weekend going by without some or other huge event Now we just had this "Classic Motor Race” on an extremely busy Kgosana Drive It’s been poorly planned and seriously inconvenienced probably 100 000 residents who use the affected routes to travel between work and home daily The City no doubt made millions, but won't compensate even one of the affected citizens who’s travelling time will have been longer, using more fuel or paying more for taxi fare

If it’s not a marathon, it’s a huge football game in the stadium when thousands come in their cars gridlocking the city centre for hours (Sunday 5 October) I don’t know what the authorities did during the Western Cape in 2010, I wasn’t here, but I read about parking facilities to the east of the city centre and shuttle buses If then, why not now ?

Film crews hanging around everywhere blocking some roads even during the week or there is a fun walk, or the Cape Town Carnival, or beach Pro Volleyball in Camps Bay, as if that suburb isn’t congested enough It’s become almost impossible for large

coaches to drive along Victoria road any time on any day

The cruise ship season is here again when up to a dozen coaches depart from the cruise terminal on the days a ship is docked Driving up and down Kloof Nek road is a nightmare for the drivers, while turning into it coming from the cable way station in Tafelberg road is a lesson in extreme patience

Not to forget about the CTICC, hosting thousands of conference participants regularly, causing traffic along the adjacent roads to creep along at best Cape Town’s traffic control is totally out of sync at any time in the week, the City administration is out of touch with reality and staging such huge events is pleasuring relatively few yet causing thousands of the rate paying citizens much disruption

The time is long overdue when the number of huge events must be kept to a minimum, such as the traditional ones, Tweede Nuwejaar, the Two Oceans and the Argus

Additional ones should be limited to a maximum of maybe one a month, not like now when we have almost one every weekend

PETERSMULIK,Rugby

ahead of automation which started in 1760 with the first industrial revolution Imagine being able to work with and absorb and do two to 40 times more than you do now Imagine the ability to instantly recall things you learned years or decades ago Imagine learning techniques that allow you to remember things you think you have forgotten All possible Our brains are individually more powerful than every computer on the planet But do we have the user manual to use them efficiently and effectively? Meditation tai chi and other activities help to develop our brains and help to develop our intuition Intuition is knowing things we were never taught I use my intuition to find possible answers which I always research and check

And to dismiss deliberate behaviour as a “mistake” is ludicrous

A mistake is when you add 2 + 2 and get 5

This deliberate behaviour caused both physical and emotional harm the victim will live with for the rest of his life

While you are scared to leave your house, imagine the horror endured by the victim having to go to school every day and having to face your son's assault, physical or verbal

This is not about you

It’s about the victim, so deal with it like the victim had to deal with being beaten by a gang of cowards and thugs

What will they be getting up to once they leave school?

Jail time is the only appropriate punishment

Glans Of, as jy verkies, ‘n bordjie verouderde cheddar en ‘n stukkie donker sjokolade

BLIND CRICKET SA T20 TOURNEY A SUCCESS

Brightfuture forblindstars

AVRILFILLIES

The Blind Cricket South Africa T20 tournament held in Stellenbosch recently was a "resounding succes" and was "a national triumph"

A total of 10 provincial teams participated and the DP Lions were crowned champions after defeating North West Dragons in the final

A preliminary training squad was picked up and out of the identified players a team will be selected to represent South Africa in the T20 World Cup in 2027 in Lahore and Multan in Pakistan

A total of 11 matches were played at Maties Cricket Club in Stellenbosch and the grant from Cricket South Africa (CSA) was successfully deployed for essential services

"The partnership with CSA enabled us to livestream the games on a Youtube channel which greatly enhanced the tournament's visibility and accessibility

The grant by the Hollywood Foundation covered the costs of accommodation and professional livestreaming infrastructure Gift of the Givers in Athlone provided the lunch for the duration of the tournament," says Frankford Williams, president of Blind Cricket SA

To properly frame the players' achievements, the public needs to understand the modifications that make this fast-paced game possible

"The ball is a larger, hard plastic ball filled with metal ball bearings to allow players to track it audibly

“All deliveries by bowlers must be bowled underarm, and the bowler must loudly shout ‘Play’ upon release so the batsman can prepare Totally blind players (B1) can be caught out after the ball has bounced once, a key adaptation to

ALL DELIVERIES MUST BE BOWLED UNDERARM, AND THE BOWLER MUST LOUDLY SHOUT “PLAY”

compensate for their lack of sight ”

Teams are strictly balanced across three classes of vision impairment

"B1 (totally blind) is the most severe impairment and these batsmen are compensated with double runs for their scores B2 (partially blind) with significant visual restriction are players who often fill key all-rounder roles B3 (partially sighted) is the highest visual acuity allowed and these players face rules closest to sighted cricket and are the least compensated," says Williams

TALENTEXPOSED

The tournament exposed the exceptional talent of Lwande Bhidla (B3) from DP World Lions and Lesedi Lesufi (B2) of Titans

The achievements of these blind Protea players, whose club allegiances are confirmed, were the highlight of the tournament

Bhidla received the award as Player of the Tournament and Lesufi the award as Young Player of the Tournament

"Winning the overall top player award as a B3 player demonstrates world-class skill in the most competitive sight class He does not receive double runs, making his performance truly extraordinary Lesufi is a rising star and his success relies heavily on superior tracking and sharp reflexes, highlighting a dedication and focus that promises a bright future ”
