THE FINANCIAL STRATEGY ANGERED MANY STUDENTS

CPUT pulls recovery plan

TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS he Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has unconditionally withdrawn its controversial Draft 2027 Financial Recovery Plan following weeks of student protests and disruptions. The decision was taken during a special meeting of the CPUT Council on Saturday 29 August. The plan, which had been at the centre of the dispute between students and the university, included proposed upfront payments for registration and accommodation in 2027. The institution’s spokesperson Lauren Kansley confirmed the council had withdrawn the plan. “The CPUT Council sat for a special meeting on Saturday, which lasted many hours. The outcomes of the meeting were communicated to staff and students. “One of the important outcomes was the withdrawal of the Financial Recovery Plan. This was a decision taken by our Council and not management.”

Mervelec’s work is among those featured at the second Cape Town Photography Festival taking place from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 26 September. The festival will feature 40 exhibitions and more than 160 photographers at venues across the city. It explores the theme of “Truth” – an exploration of how truths are produced, challenged and resisted. “I’d like visitors to encounter an image that makes them stop, question something they thought they understood, or see their own world in a new way,” says de Mervelec, who settled in South Africa in the 1990s. The festival is also contributing to conversations around a national music photography archive, an initiative that grew from concerns about preserving South Africa’s photographic record of its musical heritage. STUDENTS PREVIOUSLY RAISED CONCERNS The decision followed concerns raised

UPFRONT PAYMENT WOULD’VE PUT FAMILIES ALREADY BATTLING WITH COSTS UNDER FURTHER PRESSURE

by CPUT students about how the proposed measures would affect those already struggling financially. Students had previously told TygerBurger that the proposed R7 000 upfront payment for students requiring accommodation would place further pressure on families already battling to cover university costs. One Bellville campus student who asked not to be named said at the time students were particularly concerned about the proposed upfront payment and a requirement linked to outstanding debt. Another student told TygerBurger that the shutdown had left students uncertain about their studies as classes were suspended and some did not know when they would be able to return to campus.
