University rejectsrenaming
The University of the Western Cape has formallyrejected aproposal to rename the institution after liberation theologian Dr Allan Boesak, stating that retaining itscurrent name ensures continuitywhilst honouring his legacy.
GasantAbarder, spokespersonfor UWC, said theuniversity had acknowledged the proposal respectfully but resolved to retain itscurrent name.
According to Abarder, the university’s name is integral to its identity, reputation, and inclusivity. The institution believes that maintaining thecurrent name ensures continuitywhilst still being able to honour Boesak’s legacy.
The response comes after The Thinking Masses of SouthAfrica Foundation (TMoSA), led by Bishop Dr Clyde N.S. Ramalaine, formally approached the university in Februarywiththe renaming proposal.

Spokesperson Supt Ruth Solomons said officers on patrol in the area spotted two men in acar in King Edward Street,whom they approached,and one of them got out and droppedsomethingand then kicked it underneaththe vehicle before walking to a nearby shop.
“The officers apprehended the suspect and escorted him backtothe vehicle, wherethey foundabag of tikunderneath
the car.”
Theshop owner then informed the officers the suspect had thrown aset of keys behind the counter.
“Officers questioned the suspect and he pointed asecond vehicle out to them, and therethey found abag of cash, containing three different currencies —rands, dollars and naira —totalling R40000,” Solomons said.
Thesuspect was arrested for dealing in drugs and was detained at Parow Police Station for further investigation.

Astudent who arrived in Cape Town full of hope for the future, recently found himself robbed and stranded in an unfamiliarcity.
However,thanks to the swift responsebyVoortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) Public Safety Officers and the support of Mould Empower Serve(MES),hehas been safely reunited with his family in Gauteng.
Karabo Modise was found in Parow by VRCID Public Safety Officers after he had been robbed of all his personal belongings. With no immediate support structureinthe area, theofficers helped him and coordinated with social development partners for care and shelter, theVRCID said in astatement.
Modise was temporarily housed at the MES CentreofHope in Alexandra Street, Parow, while arrangementswere made to reunite him with his family Through the collaboration between the VRCID and MES, the reunification was successfully completed, allowing Modise to return home safely, the statement reads.
The VRCID highlighted that this case reflects thebroader role their teams play on the ground.
Whilst Public Safety Officers are primarilyresponsible for safety and crime prevention, they regularly encounter individuals in distress who require social support and intervention.

TheCityiscalling on financially struggling residentstotake advantage of available indigent and pensioner support programmes, with expanded qualifying criteria now helping more households access financial relief.
Households earning below R7 500 per month may qualify for indigent assistance, while pensioners aged 60 and older with household incomes under R27 000 are encouraged to apply for substantial rebates on municipal services and rates.
“Help is available and we encourage indigent residentsand pensioners to apply for support with service and rates costs,” said Mayco member for finance, Siseko Mbandezi. “The qualifying threshold for pensioners and social grant recipients has been expanded to enable even more residentstobenefit from the Lifeline tariff and rates rebates, with the qualifying limit now increased to amonthly income of R27000.”
TheCityhas significantly increased itssocial support package to R5,1 billion in total for rates and services relief for the 2025-'26 financial year. Qualifying households could access free basic services and receive 100% discount on theirpropertyrates. Pensioners who have previously received benefits must take note of an important change. These timeless words seem so prescient and ominous in the uncertain times we find ourselves today, in thewakeofthe bloody war in the Middle-East, inflation, the Ukraine invasion, Trump's presidency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modifying and "streamlining" the way we work. Sadly, the skills more people are developing lately are related to howto "perfect" their AI prompts to visualise aconcept instead of struggling to understand photography or learn an instrument and use critical thinking. Idread the long-term effects on our brain processing power after decadesof relying on producing prompts instead of pondering and solving some of the problems ourselves.
It is often said that each generation assumes they are living in the "end times", while the one preceding it feels that today's youth are "doomed, spoilt, entitled" and frying theirbrains with TikTokand Instagram.
Whether it's thebaby boomers emerging from World War 2, millennials witnessing changes in music, movies and computers reshaping our daily lives.
Today we find Gen-Z caught in the throes of social media, political turmoil between the left and theright andsurviving a pandemic that shackled the world to slow down.
However, Ifind Gen-Z's social consciousness and urge to call out injustice when it comes to racismand discrimination so importantand so inspiring when it comes to uniting in the nameoflove, peace and understanding, especially with thefar-rightsoeagerto mock and belittle their voices and stake in the world.
Sadly, some of us lack the curiosity and empathy to imagine what its like growing up in adifferent background, culture, way of eatingand celebrating life. Each of us is swimming in adark, mysterious current that can drown us or inspireusto swim. As ordinarycitizens we have to navigate, survive the challenges that meet us in each revolving era, God forbid we find ourselves in World War 3.
We owe it to our children and the next generation who are hungrytohelp the world and live alife that is unique to them, to support them and guide them on their mission to make their mark in society.
Our parentsalways speak fondlyofthe golden oldies they listened to growing up like the Bee Gee's, Bob Marley and Whitney Houston and simpler times, so tooare the next wave of youth eager to see how today'sartists will provide the soundtrack to their lives.
There's areason why the 80s sounded different to the 90s, anew dawnhad descendedwith new exciting ideas.
Thus Iremain optimistic that the youth can lead us out of the darkness thatbreeds division, hatred, warfare and deliverus to amoment in time where we canspeak to each other around atable insteadof shouting and justifying our opinions
