“It’s like a family here,”

said Laeeq Garrett of his fellow Beacon Hill High School drilling squad members “Everyone doesn’t have a real family at home I go to them, most of them, every single day, especially the drummers That’s my family ”

The 19-year-old’s words were met with applause from his squadmates who returned last week as winners from the

Annual National March and Drill

Competition in Gqeberha

“Mr Skink is my father in the drill squad,” continued Laeeq, from Beacon Valley “Drilling plays a big role in my life ”

“Mr Skink” is Mekyle Skink, Afrikaans teacher, drilling coach, and a former pupil and drill squad member He has been coaching since 2018

“We’ve been working very hard for the last five years,”

Skink said, but added that covid and finances kept them

school for more than three hours, giving up their time to make this a success ” Principal Melisha Benjamin knows the sacrifices

“Drilling is very expensive

from competing as often as they wanted

Last year, with sponsors’ help, the school won the Grand March, inspiring them to push even harder

“Learners were staying after

We’ve reached out to sponsors but I’ve often had to put my hand in my own pocket ”

Some sponsors, like the Ward councillor and alumni, provided shirts and shoes; others gave cash, but most of the money came from fundraisers That cost made pupils fiercely protective of their

equipment

Benjamin recalled how the drumline begged to practise during breaks, though she worried about “wearing out the skins” Their persistence paid off when the drumline’s lively routine won first place in Gqeberha Beacon Hill also won first for Grand March and took home two second-place trophies for Exhibition and Drum Major TOPAGE2

Yolande Geldenhuys has had sewage bubbling up from a drain in a yard for two weeks

The Tafelsig resident was especially concerned about her backyard tenants, who lived in a wendy house and were disabled and asthmatic The sewage was causing a massive stink and creating a health hazard

Geldenhuys was also unable to use any water in the house As soon as she opened a tap or flushed a toilet, the excess water would push the sewage further into the yard “The poo is just laying there,” Geldenhuys said “It’s getting nearer and nearer the wendy ”

Geldenhuys said she had called the City to clear whatever blockage was causing the flooding but after two weeks, she had received no help

She was not the only one to have sewerage flooding their homes, she said On Wednesday 13 August Geldenhuys' neighbours told her that Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis was doing a services blitz at the Thusong Centre in Tafelsig She determinedly marched to the centre to get help and found her way to Solomon Philander, the Ward councillor for her area and the Subcouncil 12 chair

Philander said the sewage flooding had been caused by a collapsed section of the sewer in Olifantshoek which was being repaired He assured that the sewage would stop flooding as soon as the infrastructure was repaired

SERVICEBLITZ

Philander was among several other councillors at the centre who were attending to service complaints and

malfunctions

Hundreds of residents came from all over Mitchell’s Plain to access services by several government departments, including home affairs, revenue services, environmental health, water and sanitation and to collect compost bins

The Thusong Centre was one of several points in Tafelsig, Lentegeur and Beacon Valley that were part of the mayor’s Service Blitz on the day

Later that day Hill-Lewis and Carl Pophaim, Mayco member for human settlements, visited Tafelsig resident

Rosina Plaaitjies (79) to personally deliver the title deed to her home

Pophaim also sat down to lunch with 50 residents at the Olifantshoek Community Hall to hand over their deeds “The Mayor and I have spoken publicly about our obsession with ensuring we create more home owners in Cape Town A title deed changed my grandmother’s life and can do the same for so many other families

We are investing more than R20 million to fund the transfer of properties at no cost to qualifying residents This is the biggest municipal commitment in South Africa to build generational security and opportunities for families

“It is so important for us to spend time and engage with the residents who have become owners of their units as part of the City’s unique home-ownership ‘No Cost Transfer’ programme We have already delivered more than 6 600 deeds to residents as part of this initiative We have less than 5 000 to go and are fully committed to this mission

“We encourage beneficiaries in older City of Cape Town housing developments who do not have their title deed to contact the City To really drive progress, we will soon take our new and improved Human Settlements bus into all areas of the metro, to not only bring services closer to communities, but also take our TitleDeed-to-Door programme directly to our residents again," said Pophaim

SEWERCOLLAPSE

When TygerBurger visited Geldenhuys two days after the Blitz, she said she was still unable to use any water in her home TygerBurger noted however that her yard was no longer flooded

Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said the City’s water and sanitation teams identified a collapse in the Olifantshoek Street sewer network on August 7 which affected the surrounding roads in Tafelsig

“A contractor was appointed on the same day, began repairs on 8 August, and the repairs have since been completed Suction tanks were used during the daytime to address any sewage spills, but not at night due to safety reasons, and the area was cordoned off with a traffic diversion in place,” he said He said sewage overflows were cleaned and disinfected and that only one spillage onto a residential property was reported, which was also cleaned and disinfected

Badroodien said any spillages could be reported via WhatsApp at 060 018 1505, online at www capetown gov za/ servicerequests, via email at water@ capetown gov za, via SMS at SMS 31373 (maximum 160 characters Standard rates apply), by calling 0860 103 089 or by visiting a walk-in centre (see www capetown gov za/facilities to find the one

closest to you) He added that the City’s WhatsApp line and online service channel were convenient ways to report water and sanitation issues because you could upload photos there too

“We brought her back,” she said with relief “She made it ” This is why education about water safety is so important, Whitehead said “We've got a whole department at head office that falls under drowning prevention and they have a whole group of people that go to schools in the areas, all over Cape Town,” she said “They explain to the kids what the current is and how you notice them and why you don't go into the water when it looks like that So we are actively trying to educate the kids around water safety ”

The implementation of the Mitchell’s Plain Safety and Development Plan started to take shape on Saturday 16 August when stakeholders met with government to workshop the plan’s various streams

Provincial department of police oversight and community spokesperson Kurt Nefdt said that during the workshop, at Cedar High School in Rocklands, participants were split into several groups to discuss which projects need to be supported or created in the strategies various “streams”, such as gender-based violence prevention, business and development, integrated violence prevention

He made an example of the outcome of the workshop he took part in for business and development which identified the need for more artisan training

“I was part of the business skills and development workstream and we identified three extra projects It came through very strong that there is a need for technical and skills schools,” he said “There are lots of opportunities for plumbing and electricians but youth can’t tap into these fields ”

He said in some cases it was because there was a lack of awareness and information about the programmes that are available to youth about skills training programmes

He said that the integrated violence prevention strategy also identified the need for safe zones or hubs

Other workgroups identified 10 projects that aligned with the strategy streams that would be strengthened, Nefdt said

THE PLAN’S VARIOUS ‘STREAMS’

(CPF), said the workshop “was well attended and very fruitful”

“Community leaders had an opportunity to decide on a few strategic interventions which will reduce the levels of gang violence and crime in Mitchell's Plain,” he said

There was overwhelming support for the plan, he said

“Community members stressed the importance of sustainability and funding for the initiative The issue of community cohesion was also stressed – we as the community should be united in this endeavour ”

Janjies said that the plan is still being developed and that the community will have another opportunity to give input

“The CPF would like to appeal to young people and religious leaders to join this endeavour,” he said Provincial police oversight and community safety MEC Anroux Marais thanked the stakeholders who took part

“The enthusiastic participation of community leaders, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, residents and other spheres of government demonstrated a shared commitment to addressing crime in the area This engagement served as a platform for

The Mitchells Plain United Residents Association (MURA), together with the Development Action Group (DAG) and the Community Police Forum (CPF), invites all property owners, rental landlords, contractors, subcontractors, small business owners, entrepreneurs, ward committee members and civic organisations in Mitchells Plain to an important workshop on the City of Cape Town’s recently amended Municipal Planning By-law (MPBL).

The City has introduced key changes to encourage affordable housing development and address illegal building practices.

The amendments include support for micro-development by simplifying processes for the construction of affordable rental flats and supplementary dwelling units, particularly in areas with a high demand for housing. This workshop will be held at the Lentegeur police, Boardroom, 64 Melkbos Road, Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, on Saturday 6 September, from 09:00 to 12:00 . Beacon Valley was abuzz with activity on Wednesday evening when the mayor and Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith brought a complement of leap officers and accompanied two neighbourhood watch groups during a pamphleteering drive

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis met Smith on the corner of Jukskei and Hengelaar roads in Beacon Valley on Wednesday August 13 to raise awareness about the City’s informant reward system

Led by Beacon Hill High School's drilling group, they weaved in and out of the streets in the area while handing out “see something, say something” pamphlets

That section of Beacon Valley is considered a hotspot for gang activity

While the group was pamphleteering, a message on crime watch groups circulated that there had been a shooting a few streets away, but Mitchell's Plain station commander Brig Brian Muller said the report was false

REWARDSFORTIP-OFFS

The pamphlets said that the City offered rewards of up to R20 000 for useful tip-offs

“The Informant Reward System was

introduced to assist the City's enforcement services to good effect In recent years, more and more City departments have started feeling the brunt of theft and the vandalising of critical infrastructure, and have started using the reward system,” said Smith

He also pledged his support for the #SilencingTheGun campaign, a community-driven safety initiative started by the Nyanga Community Police Forum (CPF)

“Since the beginning of the year our team has removed 215 firearms and over 5 000 rounds of ammunition off the streets

The number of firearms confiscated increases each year but there seems to be an endless supply While we believe more needs to be done to investigate the suppliers of these firearms, residents can help by reporting the locations of these firearms I want to appeal to residents to make use of the anonymous tip-off line and work alongside law enforcement agencies to make our communities safer,” Smith said . Residents can report crime and by-law offences anonymously, 24 hours a day, on 0800 110077. For urgent emergency service requests call 021 480 7700 from a cell phone or 107 from a landline

THINKING OUT LOUD

When goodbye comes too soon

It is a strange, almost unreal feeling to watch someone you love endure a grief so deep it seems to swallow them whole Two weeks ago, I watched my fiancé lose his mother, and I felt a pain unlike any I have ever known

It was not my mother, not my family, yet the weight of it pressed on me, leaving a hollowness I had never experienced before I wanted to reach out, to say the perfect words, to somehow ease the ache, but grief is not something that can be fixed with words And sympathy, however heartfelt, sometimes feels hollow when the loss is not your own I have been blessed to still have both my parents I have hugged them, laughed with them, shared the ordinary chaos of everyday life, and perhaps taken it all for granted Watching my fiancé navigate a world without his mother was a sudden, jarring reminder of how fragile life truly is Death does not send warnings, it does not schedule its arrivals at convenient times It comes uninvited, and the void it leaves is vast and echoing

How can you tell a child that some people leave forever, that no one can bring them back? His world of stability and routine was shaken, and I could feel the heartbreak in every tremor of his voice We hugged, we whispered, we repeated that heaven was a special place, and yet, the simplicity of his understanding made my own emotions even more complicated How fortunate are those of us who still have mothers? To hear their voices, to feel their embrace, to know their love is something that should never be taken lightly

.. WE MUST CHERISH THE TIME WE HAVE WITH THOSE WE LOVE ..

Over the past week, I saw a man strong, capable, and loving confront the unimaginable: the absence of the one person who has been a constant presence in his life since birth His grief was raw and unfiltered, spilling into every corner of the room and touching everyone near him I wanted to comfort him, to hold him, to take away the sorrow, but I could only be there, quiet, present, a steady hand and listening heart

The pain was multiplied when I had to explain to our three-year-old that his “Ma” had gone to heaven The innocence of a child makes grief even more poignant His small face scrunched with confusion and disbelief “No,” he said repeatedly, “she went to work and will be back ”

BRIEWE / LETTERS

Yet life is fleeting In one week, a life can change completely Death is not a distant concept; it is a reality we cannot predict, and the reminder is both sobering and urgent: we must cherish the time we have with those we love I have learned, in watching my fiancé grief, that love is not diminished by loss; it is magnified Memories become sacred, every shared laugh, every quiet conversation, every simple gesture is etched more deeply into the heart And while sympathy can never replace presence, compassion, patience, and listening become small acts of sanctuary for those enduring the storm of grief

So this week has been devastating, yes, but it has also been a lesson: to hold those we love a little closer, to speak words that matter, to celebrate life in all its fragile beauty The loss we mourn today reminds us that tomorrow is not guaranteed, and it challenges us to live fully, to love fully, and to treasure the people who fill our lives with meaning Grief is heavy, but so too is love And in the quiet spaces of sorrow, it is love that keeps us tethered to hope, to each other, and to the memory of those who are gone too soon -KAILINDANIELS

NORWAY TAKES GOLD HOME ON THE DAY

Cape Town Spurs were crowned this year's Bayview FC u-16 Youth Cup after defeating a spirited Antalyaspor JPM 2-1 under the floodlights at Athlone Stadium on Saturday 16 August. It was rather a moment to remember for the Parow-based outfit, after falling at the last hurdle against Ubuntu FC last year

Other big winners on the day were Norway Park, Woodlands United, D6 Mitchells Plain and Lentegeur FC; they beat PPG Langa, Heath Athletic AFC, Pioneer Sport Club and Southampton FC, respectively Spurs lifted the Platinum Cup, with Norway Park taking the Gold Cup home while Woodlands claimed Silver D6

Mitchells Plain took the Wagiet Cup and Lentegeur Bronze

In the only ladies' match of the day, Rygate Invitational Ladies locked horns with Mitchells Plain LFA ladies The two sides played a 1-1 stalemate

An elated tournament organiser and Bayview FC chair Mark Rodrigues hailed the event He thanked all the sponsors, teams and supporters for their commitment and support in making the tournament one of Cape Town's top sporting events "This was a very special year for us, not only because the finals

were played at the Athlone Stadium, but it is also a huge milestone for the team We are celebrating our 20th anniversary," said Rodrigues

He said this year's venue elevated the tournament to new heights and gave people from across the province an opportunity to witness young soccer talent on display The tournament also gave the players a chance to play on a proffessional pitch

"This means if you dream it you can do it Playing at Athlone Stadium is not something many of our young footballers

get to do in their lifetime This gives them an opportunity to be part of something special," he said Rodrigues described the occasion as "very special" and an the journey to Athlone Stadium as "emotional" "It was not an easy journey There were too many obstacles but the support from everyone has been amazing This is not about people It is about giving the younsters an opportunity to showcase their talent " He added that preparations were already underway for next year's tournament "We've launched a platform for a great tournament moving forward We have started with plans for next year and hope to make it even better
