Councillor Norman Adonis from Ward 92 cautioned a Sub-council 12 meeting last month regarding public participation around the Dolomites sports field in Tafelsig because illegal spinning was taking place there
participation and then the public participation office is not even going to listen to what we as councillors are saying,” he said
“We already have issues around the sportsfield,” Adonis said
“Residents are complaining that they do not want the spinning

“They have been using that space illegally and now we hear that they are going to have public
“On a Monday morning that clinic is full because of asthma attacks and chest problems, just because of what is happening around that space ”
- Normal Adonis
Adonis claims that the spinning clubs had moved to Dolomites after they were kicked out of Lentegeur
Sub-council chair Solomon Philander reminded the councillor that they were not
gatekeepers
“When they apply they must go through the proper channels,” he said He said that spinning clubs had breached their contracts with the City
“We are not against the

spinning but there is a responsibility on their end,” Philander said
“They had a very terrible event where all the by-laws were broken They were then no longer allowed to use the field in Lentegeur ” A neighbour of the Dolomites field said the community is divided about the spinning, or popping, as it is known

A group of animal activists are gearing up to tackle the GunRun pet walk to help raise funds for their third mobile clinic
The group will take part in the 5km Pet Walk category in this year's OUTsurance Gun Run at Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point on Saturday 13 September
The walk will start on Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point, and finish on the Green Point Common, opposite the Green Point Cricket Club All races finish on the Green Point Common, opposite the Green Point Cricket Club
RAISINGFUNDS
The runners represent the Animal Rescue Organisation (ARO) and are raising funds for their brand-new mobile clinic, said head of fundraising, Lindsey Concer
"This service is a lifeline for pets in need, and as a team, we're ready to put in the miles (and the sore feet!) to help make Mobile Clinic number three a reality
"Help us help the doggies and kitties who need us most," she said
The ARO team is making its debut in this year's Pet Walk with 25 team members, including their families
The animal rescue organisation has been appealing for funds to help cover their costs to build another mobile clinic since July and launched a fundraising drive
Concer hopes the new clinic can expand their services and allow them to support more communities where animals need vaccinations and sterilisations
"A third clinic is an urgent need that we identified during our recent outreach efforts in communities like Jim se Bos, Lekkerwater, Egoli, Phumlani, Siqalo, and most recently, Smallville," said Concer
So far they have received some donations from some loyal supporters, but their financial target goal they hope to reach is around R1 million The new mobile clinic will offer various services for sickly animals
. For more information about ARO, visit their website at https://www.animalrescue org.za

He said people didn’t like the smoke but at the same time the children loved it and there was not enough activities to keep the children busy in the area
“The cemeteries are full of children who became gangsters and were killed,” he said, adding that the spinning events could also provide trading and business opportunities if done well
Jonathan Schaffers, founder of Supporting People In Need (Spin), said that the City had set him up for failure when it gave him a lease at Lentegeur Sports Field
Schaffer said the field, which is badly neglected, has no access control and Schaffers’ agreement capped entry at 200 people
“No other codes that use the field have a cap,” Schaffers said Schaffers started the spinning club six
years ago, after a friend's daughter was raped there Since then he has spent hundreds of thousands of rands of his own money to secure the field
He said the purpose had been twofold, as crime prevention and recreation
He said that if the field was being used to entertain the community then gang activity could not take place there too
“They spend a lot of money on tracks at Killarney which our children can't reach,” he said
Schaffers said that City's bylaws are out of touch with some areas of the Cape Flats
“We elected those councillors to advocate for us but instead they work against us Those by-laws may work in Camps Bay but they don't work here ” Schaffers said his club was not active at Dolomites but was networked with all the other spinning clubs in Mitchell’s Plain

Adrilling competition that started in Mitchell’s Plain has become interprovincial, despite still not being recognised as an official sport
On Saturday 18 October the second interprovincial drilling and marching competition for the year will take place at the Jan Burger Sports Complex in Parow and teams from the Eastern and Northern Cape will be taking part
The drilling and marching competition was started by then Mitchell’s Plain station commander, Maj Gen Jeremy Vearey in 2007 in response to a sharp decline in discipline at schools
“He realised that an activity was needed that would teach youth discipline, respect for authority and encourage leadership skills,” said Cornelia Louw, the local organising committee (LOC) chair
“Marching and drilling was
“ anactivitywasneeded thatwouldteachyouth discipline, respectfor authorityandencourage leadershipskills.

introduced as a diversion programme ”
Louw has worked in policing since 2006 She was the sports administrator at Mitchells Plain Police Station but left for Pretoria in 2010 after she was promoted to the Hawks
She returned to Cape Town in 2014 to work in the Hawks’ provincial cyber crime investigation unit
Her main role as LOC chair is also finding partners and funding
Louw says that for the first 10 years, the programme had one sole funder but that funding has since dwindled
This has caused the competition
to shrink but ironically, it still expanded Interest from more schools and community squads, including in other provinces, has also made the competition interprovincial
NEWCATEGORY
This year’s competition has a new category: Trash Can Champs, which is about recycling, Louw said “A team of five fill as much refuse bags as possible in a given time at the competition but it has to be separated and sorted according to recycling categories like paper, plastic or tins,” Louw said Despite the scale and scope of the competition changing, investment remains a challenge
Many schools are also unable to secure coaches
“If we can get government to acknowledge the sport and employ coaches and develop them, it would be great as they have a great passion for the kids and sport,” Louw said
Searidge Park Primary in Mitchells Plain has received a bright R753 000 new kitchen makeover and a new dining area with capacity for children, thanks to GrandWest
The no-fees school is situated in the heart of Tafelsig, a community that faces extreme poverty and poor socio-economic conditions
Now the school’s kitchen boasts gleaming stainless-steel countertops, a double sink, and food storage shelving, while a small hot water urn makes cooking and cleaning up easier
A much-needed coat of paint and splash tiles have brightened the room, while a roller shutter door will secure the space when it is not being used
A new 60m² prefab dining unit constructed on a steel frame was installed, with electrical connections, tables, and 60 freestanding stools The upgrade included cutlery, crockery, and kitchen utensils such as pots, sealable containers, chopping
boards, measuring scales, and a commercial can opener
The dining unit was brightened with a mural and images in snapper frames The staff room was also refreshed with a lick of paint
GrandWest General Manager
Mervyn Naidoo said, “Searidge Park Primary School is served by the National School Nutrition Programme, which currently feeds more than 300 learners at the school each day
“With that many meals to make and serve, we felt it was important to provide a professional space within to prepare meals and the infrastructure for children to comfortably eat their meals in ”
In 2023, GrandWest provided support for the school’s computer lab
The computer lab is also used to uplift and assist the community with free classes to empower them in basic computer skills

The City of Cape Town has welcomed the opportunity for the Western Cape High Court to determine the constitutional and funding obligations related to the Dial-a-Ride transport service for persons with disabilities This development could potentially unlock much-needed national government support for the long-running service
Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, said the City had requested that the Western Cape Network on Disability’s legal representatives join court proceedings alongside the national government and other relevant state entities
The request was made during discussions held on Friday 5 September, as part of an urgent legal application for a review of the City’s adjustments to the Dial-a-Ride service due to funding constraints
In a show of good faith, the City has agreed to temporarily extend the existing
Dial-a-Ride service while legal proceedings are underway This agreement has been formalised as a court order
"This extension provides an important window to engage in a broader conversation about the respective mandates and responsibilities across all spheres of government in the provision of specialised services such as Dial-a-Ride," said Quintas
He stressed that while the City of Cape Town currently invests more in transport for persons with disabilities than any other metro in the country, it cannot continue to fund the service unilaterally
“Delivering true inclusion requires a collective effort not just from municipalities, but from all spheres of government, employers, and civil society,” Quintas added
“And that support isn’t necessarily

In May, the City adopted the Universal Access Policy for Accessible Transport, an internationally recognised framework aimed at integrating universal design into Cape Town’s broader transport network
The policy promotes independent, safe, and dignified travel for all, regardless of physical ability
These principles are already evident in the City’s ongoing investment in the MyCiTi bus service, which is designed for universal access
The City is currently advancing Phase 2A of the MyCiTi network, which will link Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with the economic centres of Claremont and Wynberg
The City also continues to upgrade its
network of sidewalks and pedestrian crossings to serve a wider population from wheelchair users and the elderly to children, pram-pushers, and cyclists
Despite these improvements, Quintas acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing the Dial-a-Ride service
Originally introduced in 2002, the service has significantly expanded beyond its initial scope It was designed to transport wheelchair users and people with severe mobility impairments to and from work until such time as mainstream public transport systems became fully accessible
Municipalities are not constitutionally mandated to provide such specialised services
To date, Dial-a-Ride has been funded directly from the City’s municipal rates account, without support from other spheres of government
For the service to continue accommodating trips unrelated to employment, the City hopes that the outcome of the court proceedings

A historic landmark in the heart of Cape Town, the Castle of Good Hope, is undergoing significant regulatory maintenance and restoration efforts aimed at preserving its legacy and enhancing visitor experience
Calvyn Gilfellan, chief executive officer of the Castle of Good Hope, said the bulk of the works will be completed for the start of this year’s summer tourism season According to Gilfellan the work
between the Castle and the National Department of Defence
He said about R1,2 million has been set aside for a perimeter fence along the area once illegally occupied by a group of homeless people
According to Gilfellan repainting of yellow walls inside the Castle will cost about R1,5 million
He said repairs to CCTV cameras will also be carried out “The other works include replacing all broken windowpanes,
room interior and waterproofing of some of the roofs These are ongoing repair and maintenance work ”
He assured that while the repairs are ongoing, the Castle remains fully open to the public, continuing to host major cultural events such as Doek on Fleek, Kota Festival, and Kuier, with no disruptions Gilfellan said the repair work is vital to ensuring that South Africa’s oldest colonial building is preserved

The milkwood tree is the tree of the year Every year the national government picks a tree to spotlight for Arbor Day and this year the hardy milkwood is the star of the show, said City arborist Altus de Wet De Wet was addressing a crowd of residents and City staff under a ring of milkwoods in Westridge Gardens on Wednesday 3 September
“I sense a very green spirit in this place,” said De Wet before listing facts about the indigenous tree and how to care for it
“The milkwood is well adapted to the Cape Peninsula, especially the coastal areas,” he said “It prefers sandy soil

Insults and statistics were flung around like missiles during the rapid fire debate at the provincial Sitting of the House on Thursday 4 September
These concerned the police service’s response to gang violence and the efficacy of the parole board
At the end of the sitting, however, the province tabled a Power Bill which, in a nutshell, seeks to give it autonomy from national government in certain sectors, to make decisions where it believes the national government is failing
The meeting devolved into farcical chaos multiple times when members shouted and interrupted one another with comments that the Speaker dismissed as “frivolous” Khalid Sayed, of the African National Congress, interrupted Premier Alan Winde during his address, asking if it was “parliamentary to compare human beings who are being butchered to cats?”
He was referring to Winde’s comment about parolees who are released from prison, back into society without being tracked: “You know, at home my wife’s got a tracker on my cat ” Winde, in his address, criticised police and the parole board, arguing in favour of giving more policing powers to the City and the province While there was consensus in the House that the police were under-resourced and over-burdened, opposition parties were quick to point out that crime is rooted in economic instability The DA-led province was accused of not acknowledging its own failures in economic reform
Several members also questioned the province’s safety strategy calling it “an expensive failure” ANC shadow MEC for Health Rachel Windvogel said: "Millions of rands were poured into this safety plan, but the murders have increased ” GOOD Party member Brett Herron also criticised the safety plan, which he said “has prioritised policing over prevention This means this

government has deprioritised investing in the environmental and socio-economic conditions that are conducive to violent crime ”
MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais also called for the devolution of policing powers to the province, which mirrors the same motion in the DA-led City The motion was met with mixed reaction, the ACDP supporting it while the ANC accused the DA of using the House to push its own agenda through
“While we welcome the debate we have repeatedly called for it, but were ignored Only now that it serves the DA’s purposes does it happen," Windvogel said
The province’s Constitutional Court case opposing the national government’s National Health Insurance (NHI) Act also came under fire On Wednesday 3 September the DA issued a statement on its website saying the Western Cape Government challenged the validity of the NHI Act to defend the constitutional right to proper health care of every resident of the Western Cape Sayed made a motion without notice, strongly condemning Winde and urging him to withdraw the case, saying it was a waste of taxpayers’ money Galil Brinkhuis of Al Jama-ah said: “There is nothing unconstitutional about the NHI We want to know how the province is paying for the lawsuit? Or, is it taking the money from education?”
MEC for Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Ivan Meyer also tabled a motion for the Powers Bill He said the Powers Bill would deal with “issues of trade, issues of the harbour, the issues of exports, issues of public transport and the issue of safety and security”
The Bill is exactly as its names suggests, seeking to give the province the autonomy to make decisions where it believes national government is falling very short Despite much criticism of national government for the lack of public participation on NHI, the Power Bill was tabled at the sitting without any
The Bill itself states: "No prior consultation with the public has occurred in the development of the Bill Public participation will be conducted and the due process will be followed "

I was fine one day The next, I was struggling to breathe, fighting for every inhalation and placed on oxygen in the ICU
Two weeks ago, I experienced what I now call a life quake If you've never heard the term, it's a powerful disruption that shakes your life, shifts your direction, and demands transformation It doesn't arrive politely, and it rarely feels convenient, but it comes with purpose Your life is calling for change
For me, that quake lasted seven days In those ICU hours, time slowed Even a glimpse of an airplane outside my hospital window, its roar and motion from the seventh floor, gave me hope That small sight became a beacon, I waited for it, letting it remind me that I would get out In that space, I wasn't just Namhla Monakali I was "a slip-and-fall risk", a clinical classification meant to protect fragile patients At first, the label felt cold and impersonal, but it forced me to confront my vulnerability and reflect on how easily life can shift Every breath felt monumental Every heartbeat reminded me how fragile life truly is It forced me to face how I had been living, long hours at work, skipped meals, skipped workouts, stress carried like a badge of honour, rest ignored I had been
LIFEQUAKESAREPAINFUL,BUT THEYARECLARIFYING.THEY STRIPAWAYDISTRACTIONS, FORCINGUSTOCONFRONT WHATWE’VEIGNORED. .. BRIEWE|LETTERS
investing in everything but my most precious asset, my health That's when it hit me, health is wealth
No promotion, no car, no social accolade can replace the value of being alive and well Health is the foundation of everything else Yet, we often wait for a crisis to force us to notice I don't want to wait anymore
Since that life quake, I've committed to caring for myself differently, physically, mentally, and emotionally I've learned to listen to my body, to prioritise well-being and to make conscious choices each day that protect and nurture my health
Last week was Kidney Awareness Week, and I couldn't help but think of Asanda Hlamandana, a young skilled, passionate and dedicated teacher with a Master's degree (yes, she would want me to mention that she has Masters), whose passion for teaching has always inspired her learners I've watched her create an inclusive learner-focused learning environment, celebrate their journeys, and helping them reach not only their academic goals
Life quakes are painful, but they are clarifying They strip away distractions, forcing us to confront what we've ignored They challenge us to grow, to change, and to emerge stronger My ICU stay was not just a brush with mortality, it was a chance to redefine priorities, appreciate the little things, and embrace life fully Health is freedom For me? It's freedom to breathe without struggle, to move without pain, to pursue dreams, to nurture relationships, and to experience joy So, take this as my reminder to you, and to myself, cherish your health Protect it Honour it Don't wait for a life quake to shake you awake Make time for rest Eat mindfully Move your body
If you're in the middle of a life quake, whether through illness, loss, transition, relocation, grief, new opportunities, or the unpredictable road of entrepreneurship, I see you I pray you move through the shock and embrace the beauty trying to break through I hope, and I live, to reap the rewards of allowing growth to visit, shake me, and usher me into one of the most beautiful seasons of my life -NAMHLA MONAKALI

My wife and I recently moved from Parow to Oakdale in Bellville Our primary motivation was the safety, security and relative tranquility in the area
Imagine our shock when we discovered that prostitutes are plying their trade in broad daylight literally next to our complex on the corner of Sydney and Kingsmead Streets
Needless to say, we were shocked to the core! We felt horribly betrayed since nobody ever alerted us to this scourge
This, despite the fact that two primary schools surround us and small innocent children are exposed to this dehumanising practice I understand that numerous complaints were already lodged with the relevant authorities but to no avail Police simply drive past the prostitutes as if its the right thing to do When confronted, they just return without a care the next day All this happen in broad daylight as if they know
The waste diversion initiative by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology ( CPUT goes green , TygerBurger 27 August) is indeed a noble environmental sustainable project If only Grant Twigg Mayco member for urban waste management, quietly rightly praised the zero-waste project Yet, the question remains: is it going to remain sustainable?
Take for instance the projects promoted by the City over the years! When wheelie bins were introduced, residents received pamphlets as to what could, or could not, be dumped in them It even provided special bins in certain areas for recyclable materials
There was a time when recycling was the in-thing when many businesses venues allowed drop-off points for certain items - including fluorescent tubes, batteries, etc
No longer! And in the interim, as society finds the pleasures of life more attractive, we now even dump highly toxic items of all sorts in the convenient wheelie bin Even asbestos
Which may only be dumped at a site at Bellville South It is so much more convenient to just dump (all
sorts of items/cuttings) in the cover of darkness at some convenient spot No wonder the City has waste trucks on the roads seven days a week!
While the drom-krappers are the curse of numerous residents it is unbelievable the number of sugar/maize bags they fill on many days of recyclable items For which they are paid by recycling depots Yes some litter the pavements and streets, but there is a way the culprits can be stopped Without force
Which brings me to the outcry from residents surrounding the Goodwood dump site Over a decade ago, the City eventually found a suitable site amidst much fanfare; until after further investigation, it was rejected due to water level issues
As usual, the issue was swept under the foundations of City's sacred headquarters! I mean, the wagon moves on
The very same scenario applies to what gets dumped into waste water outlets in numerous buildings Or down manholes Or anywhere else! Oh well, ratepayers can pay JBeelders,VASCO
There is a significant increase in potholes in the Goodwood area Many potholes are resembling craters, that will do damage to vehicles, and will evidently cause incidents
The quick "fixing" with gravel is definitely not suitable, as can be observed The question is, when will the road surfaces be a top priority? TessaLuck,GOODWOOD
they have protection! From early morning to late at night we are forced to watch this spectacle This cannot be correct and tolerated Something must be done and fast We regret everyday the decision to move into this neighbourhood We feel trapped and terribly betrayed! How can this be allowed in this day and age? I would like to appeal to the authorities to intervene with urgency We do not deserve this Frustrated Citizen, BELLVILLE

Cape Town Opera (CTO) is set to enchant young audiences this September with a vibrant new production of The Magic Flute, tailored specifically for primary and high school learners
This lively adaptation of Mozart's beloved opera will run from 16 to 20 September at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone, offering two performances daily at 10:00 and 13:00
Directed by Elizma Badenhorst, with imaginative designs by Frankie van Straten and lighting by Kieran McGregor, this playful version blends live performance with engaging puppetry Music direction is by Jan Hugo, recently seen onstage as Rossini in CTO's acclaimed The Barber of Seville
Designed with accessibility and education in mind, The Magic Flute has been adapted into two unique versions—one for primary and one for high school learners—making it an ideal cultural outing for schools.
With multilingual narration in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and opera sung in the original German, the production
ensures inclusivity while supporting curriculum-linked learning, particularly for high school music learners
The opera follows the young Prince Tamino on a fantastical quest to rescue Princess Pamina. Along the way, he's aided by a magic flute and the quirky bird-catcher Papageno, embarking on a journey filled with humour, wisdom and wonder
A stellar cast from CTO's Judith Neilson Young Artist Programme brings the tale to life, including Alida Scheepers as the Queen of the Night and Khayakazi Madlala as Pamina. Mongezi Mosoaka, Sisikelelwe Mngenela, Nathan Lewis, and guest artist Riaan Hunter also feature, alongside colourful puppet characters crafted from recycled materials.
Supported by the National Arts Council and the Western Cape Government, this interactive production is more than just a show—it's a chance for young people to fall in love with opera. After the Athlone run, The Magic Flute heads to Woordfees in October . Tickets are R80 via Webtickets
