The “mayor of Tafelsig”, a72-yearold woman who ran seniors clubs, started non-profitorganisations, organised soup kitchens and founded neighbourhood watches —Beatrice Leng —died on Sunday 26 April.
Belovedbygenerations, Leng, who was affectionately known as Auntie Beatie, was rememberedatamemorial service on 29 April.
LEGACY
Outspoken and active, Leng was wellknown in Tafelsig for her activism and crime fighting.
Vernon Fortune, the Hyde Park Neighbourhood Watch chair, called Leng a“pioneer, legend, founder —all the long namesthatyou can give to thesepeople that have been there around ahundred years —she is oneofthose people”.
According to Fortune, Leng founded the original neighbourhood watch in Tafelsig before it was split into smaller sectors.
“She was amemberofthe Tafelsig Neighbourhood Watch from the beginning,” he said.
As newsofLeng’s passing spread over theweekend, condolences poured in over multiple channels, including social media,
from far and wide.

Leng’s eldest daughter, Claudette Sauls, said the family was completely overwhelmed by the calls, visits and messages of support and she is floored by the impact her mother has had.
“The last time Iwas sitting with her in the lounge and Isaid, ‘Mama, please, this is not your concern anymore, please, you said you’d let it go. Let the younger people take over, concentrate on your health. Concentrate on getting better, please.’ But that was not my mother,”Sauls said.

Leng had aheart condition and a pacemaker fitted. Her health had been declining for about two years, but she continued her community work despite her illness.

The Mitchells PlainUnitedResidents Association (Mura) alsosent their condolencestothe family.
“Murawould liketoexpress our heartfelt condolencesand prayers to the Morris Leng family on the passing of the ‘mayor of Tafelsig’,” said Mura secretary Michael Jacobs.
Jacobs said Leng was a“dedicated servantand volunteer of the community”.
“She servedanumber of years as a victim support volunteer at Mitchells Plainpolice,was involved in local government as award committee member and alsoworked within the NGOsector to improve thelives of community members throughher selfless actions, commitment and dedication,” Jacobs said.
To thefamily he said: “May you find peace and comfort in knowing that BeatriceMorris Leng hasleft alasting impression on many.”
Lengissurvived by five children, three of whom she adopted, nine grandchildren and threegreat-grandchildren.

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA)said Cape Towncriminals have stooped to new lows to ambushmotorists on the R300 highway.
It said criminals had taken to hanging dogs from concretepalisade walls lining parts of the roadway using bits of wire tightly wound around theirnecks, leaving them to dangle andsuffer in the hope that such distressing scenes will force motorists to stop andrescue them, and whom theywill then rob.
“On Sunday26April we received acall from adistressed motoristwho spotted a dog hanging from the wall behind Samora Machel,” apostonAWSSA’s Facebook page related, “and another cruelly jammed between theconcrete palisades.Their inclination was to stop and help but they suspected this may be atrap so alerted us as soon as it was safe to do so.”
Senior InspectorSivuyile Kilwa, accompanied by senior nurses Michelle Henning, respondedtothe scene within minutes,but tragically both dogs had already succumbedtoinjuries and suffocation.
“In our experience this is not an isolated incident, butrather proof of just how ruthless criminals have become,” the AWSSA said. “Ifyou witness asuspect settingupsuch ascene do not stop. Instead, call ouremergency hotline on 082 601 1761.”
Commentators on the postwere outraged. “Weare sharing acountry with barbaric savages. They don’t deserve to breathe the same air as thesebeautiful creatures they are murdering,” one said. Another: “Please, Father God, unleash yourfullwrath on these demons that they may never harmanother animal or human ever again. Amen.” TygerBurger reached out to the police for comment. The manager of the OK Liquor shop in Blou Dakke, Strandfontein, has strongly rejected claims that he or anyone linked to the business intimidated community members, saying he has voice notes andwrittenmessages that contradict theaccusations.

Influencer SibuMpanza, formerly from Mandalay, was the host at the Telkom gaming stand activation at Comic Con Cape Town this year.

“I grew up in Mandalay. Igrew up goingtochurch in Khayelitsha and going shopping in the Town Centre with my mom,” he said.
BACKGROUND
Mpanza’s presenting career started when he discovered YouTube as astudent at the University of CapeTown (UCT). While skipping class, he sat down ata computer andfound acreator talking to acamera.
“I said,‘What is that?Whatdoyou mean,welcome to my channel? Ithought YouTube is just aplatform whereyou dump random videos’,” he recalls.“Today in 2026 —completely normal —but in 2014, very few people knew orunderstood what that was.”

Irecently stumbled upon a Facebook memory that took me back seven years, to an election year,toayounger version of myself, and to amoment Ihave notquite let go of.
Iwas ajournalism studentthen, on the eNCA election bus, and live on television when Iwas asked asimple question: "Are you voting?"
Isaid no. Around me, the answer was almost unanimously yes. My response landed awkwardly, as Iexpected it would. It was not because Idid notunderstand the importance of voting.
Idid. Political awareness was not foreign in my home.
But Ialso understood something else: the framing theory. This is atheory in communication of understandinghow meaning is shaped not only by what is said,but byhow it is presented, interpretedand socially received.
At its simplest, framing is the process of selecting certain aspects of reality and making them more prominent in communication, so that a particular interpretation is encouraged. The same issue can therefore produce entirely different reactionsdepending on the frame attached to it
Conversations about politics among young people were, and often still are, uncomfortable terrain.
Speak too earnestly and you risk being labelled "too serious". Push too far and the conversation dissolves into humour.
Deflection or disengagement Politics becomes something to joke about, avoid, or reduced to personalities rather than policy. So Ianswered deliberately. Not to reject democracy, but to disrupt the script.
Africans navigating politics with adegree ofawareness, but withoutconsistentspaces that nurture, challenge and deepen thatunderstanding.There is curiosity,but not always guidance.
There is exposure, butnot always explanation.
Politics is notanimage.Itisnot public relations
It shapes the costofliving, the safety of our communities, the quality of education andthe opportunities available to young people.
It requires more than following personalities or slogans. It requires lookingatleaders and parties critically, weighing their positions,manifestos andgovernance records, and makingdecisions grounded inunderstanding rather than allegiance.
Now, seven yearslater, as the countryapproachesanother localgovernment election,Ifind myself returningtothatsame question. Notwhether young people will vote, but whether they arebeing preparedtodecide.
Because voting, on its own,is notthe endpoint of democracy.
It is only meaningful when it isinformed. Aballot castwithout clarityis participation in form, but notalways in substance.
We cannotcontinuetomeasure civic engagementpurely by turnout,while ignoring the uneven foundation on whichthat participation rests.
Political understanding remains fragmented. In somespaces it is actively discouraged, treated as divisive or unnecessary. In others, it is reduced toslogans, party loyalty, or surface-level debates thatdo little to build critical thinking

Thecynicism in this defencecan be puncturedbythe simplebut probingquestion of :“Have anyofthose 52 really been interviewedtoget their informed view of caged, confined andrestricted animal beingsbeing forced to perform fortheir amusement? Have theybeen given anyinsight into what happens to the sheer spirit andsoul of thesebeautiful wildcreatures whentheyare cagedand confined forthe duration of their livesand many, like lions, areforcedtoperform “under the whip”?
They have not.

Iwanted to see if anyone would pause long enough to ask why. Very few did.That moment has stayed with me, not because of the answer Igave, but because of the gaps it revealed.
Young people are consistently encouraged to vote, but not always equipped to understand what that participation demands. We are told our voices matter, but seldom guided on how to interrogate manifestos, unpack ideology, or position ourselves within acomplex political landscape. Participation is promoted. Political literacy, far less so. At the time, my answer frustrated people close to me.I was accused of making myself appear uninformed in apublic space. How could Isay that, on live television, during an election cycle? But Iunderstood the power of framing.
Iwas willing to sit with that discomfort because the moment was never about appearing clever. It was about forcing aconversation that toooften remains avoided, even in spaces that are meant to encourage engagement

The result is ageneration expected to participate in a system they are not always fully equipped to navigate.
This is notanargument against voting. It isanargument against shallowengagement.
Importantly, these conversations cannot be confined to formalspaces alone. They must exist in homes, schools, campuses,communities and media platforms. They must be normalised amongpeers, not avoided. Political literacy should notrequire aspecialised interest or professional background. It should be part of howwe understand the world we live in.
The challenge isnot apathy. It is access, to knowledge, to dialogue, to spaces where politicalunderstanding is developed rather than discouraged.
As local elections draw closer, the questionshould notonly be howmanyyoungpeople will showupat the polls.
It shouldbewhether they arearriving there with clarity, confidence and asense of urgency.Whether they understand notjust who they are voting for, but why.
