The neighbourhood watch in Tafelsigacted swiftlyonreportsof youngsters stoning buses in the area recently.

Vernon Fortune, the Hyde Park neighbourhood watch deputy chair,said they were "activated" when they were informedbypolice that buses were being stoned.

"We've been speaking to thepolice," Fortunesaid,calling the incidents a"sad affair".

Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, confirmed that there had been 18 stoning incidents in Tafelsig last month.

"The motive forthe stonings is unknown, but witnesses identified theperpetrators as youths," she said.

She said GABS worked closely with police, law enforcement and the ward councillor to ensure that the stonings stopped.

"Golden Arrow will not allowcriminals to inconvenienceour passengers, and all incidents havebeen reported to the police," shesaid, adding that there were no repeat incidents.

DAMAGETOPROPERTY

Police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said that six malicious damage to property cases were opened and that no arrests have been made.

AStrandfontein training centre is offering free Saturday Computer Applied Technology (CAT) readiness assessmentstohelp matric learners prepare for their final examinations.

Knights Innovation Support Centre, based at 29 Blackberry Mall, says the assessments are designed to help learnersidentify their knowledge gaps before the final examination period.

Séan Achim, managing director of the centre, said the initiative was adirect response to concerns he hears from parents in the community.

"I am achild of Mitchell's Plain. Isee the struggle every day and parents often come up to me asking if Ican help," said Achim. "This is our response. The assessments are completely free, with no strings

attached. We simply wantlearners toknowwhere they stand, what they already understandand what they should focus on next."

The assessments are aimedat matric learners takingCAT, but Grade 10and Grade 11 learners arealso welcome where spaceis available.

Wanneer rugbyondersteuners, van verskillende spanne, goedig met mekaar spot,maakdit die spel nog lekkerder, maar wanneer hulle mekaar begin vloek en beledig, doen dit afbreuk aan die spel en dievrede watdit kanbring.

Ihavealsoencountereddrivers andattendants who appeartobeoperatingwhile intoxicated and reaking

of alcohol, often with clearsignstheyare under the influence of asubstance other than alcohol, whichmake them aggressiveand unpredictable, andraises obvious andserious safety concernsfor passengers.

Thesedrivers don't care about the livesand safety of their passengers, drivingintooncomingtrafficlanes simplytoavoid waitingintrafficaseveryoneelse must,insultingand cursingatpassengersfor objecting to their livesbeingplacedatrisk.

Theseconcernsare notaboutthe taxi industryasa whole.Theyconcern specificconductthatpassengers should notbeexpected to tolerate simplybecause theydependonpublictransport.Public transport users deserve accountabilityand protectionfrom exploitation,intimidation and unsafepractices.
