For two years, aTafelsig grandmother’s murderinvestigation has madenoprogress and herkillers arestill at large.
Kathleen “Ellen” Malan (87) was found tiedupand murdered in her Tafelsig home on the night of 27-28 September 2024. Almost two years later no suspect has been identified andnoarrest made, according to details published by Action Society on its website.
Action Society, acivil-rights group, said it had madeeightdocumented attempts to push theinvestigation forward since beingmandated by Malan’s family to monitor thecase. Theorganisation has met with detectives, submitted formal progress requests andforensic follow-ups (requests forfurther scientific testing of evidence),lodgedacomplaint with the DNA Board (the official body that oversees DNA testinginSouthAfrica’s police labs), escalated the casetoprovincial police leadership (senior police officials in theprovince), written to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP, the leading government lawyer who decides whether acaseisstrong enoughtogotocourt) and submitted aformal complainant statement (a formal statementmade to the police by someone acting on behalf of the victim’s family).
“Eightinterventions should not be necessary to keep onemurder investigation moving,” said Juanita du Preez, an Action Society spokesperson. “Every letter, complaint andescalation has been aimedatanswering the same questionEllen’s family has been asking since September2024: who murdered her?”

In March Action Societywas informed the DNA retakes had been completed and the docket (the police case file containing all the evidence and statements for acase) had been with the DPPsince 10 March. In April it confirmed the investigation was incompleteand had been referred back to Mitchells Plainpolice to finalise outstanding investigative work.
“DNAoutstanding,”DuPreez noted. “DNAretakes. Further samples. Adocket sent to the DPPand then returned for further investigation. Ellen’s case has moved from one stage to the next, but almost two yearslater we still cannot name the person who tied an elderly woman up and murdered her in her own home.”

Malan’sbody was discovered with her hands tied by afamily member on 28 September 2024. Known as “everyone’s granny”, the beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was known by her community for her kindness and looking after children while their parents worked.
While Action Societycommended the police and DNA Board for their written responses and cooperation it expressed dismay that no suspect had been identified nor any arrest made.
“With every month that passes without a suspect or an arrest Ellen’s murder moves closer to joining SouthAfrica’s growing cold-case crisis,”DuPreez pointed out.
“An unsolved murder does not become less urgent because time has passed. Ellen’s killer has already had almost two years of freedom. We will not allow her name to quietly disappear intoanopen docket. Her family deserves answers.”

Ward councillor Avron Plaatjies confirmed on his WhatsApp channel that aman’s body had been found at the sports field following the shooting. He said police were on the scene and that what had happened was not yet known. Police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were still under investigation.

Asordid story of brutally killed cats in Mitchells Plain seems to have leapt straight outofahorror movie plot.
According to aFacebook post by the Animal Welfare Society(AWS), the cats were not onlykilled in an “unimaginably violent” way, but their corpses werethen staged in aplay park in Harmony Village.

AWS inspectors recovered several of the bodies and forensic post-mortem examinations are under way to establish the cause of death and gather clues about who was responsible.

Jansen added that the legal process to evict the illegal occupiers and demolition of the house is taking too long.
“Hence the reason now for escalating it to the minister for his immediate attention and action,” he said.

The race, which was organised by the Mitchells Plain Homing Union (MPHU), saw 7500 pigeons from dozens ofMitchells Plain lofts flyroughly 475kmtotry to bring homethe legacy trophy. While the union takes part in dozens of races annually, and the Mitchells Plain loftsfare well in most of them,the Legacy Race was done in commemoration of Mitchells Plain 50thanniversary and the union's 46th year of existence.

One of Flowers’ pigeons, asocial media starcalledNiggie Pearl, has helped to bring attentiontothe sport.Flowers said therehas been an explosion of interest since hiswife, Sandy Schuter, started postingfunny videos about the handreared pigeon on socialmedia. Initially he thoughtthe bird would never be aracerand asked his wife if she wantedtoraisethe severely injured and dyingchickonly because Schuter had previously askedfor abird. Ordinarily, severely injuredbirds are culled, Flowers said. However, when he realised that the fully recoveredand domesticated pigeon’s parentswere prime fliers, he changed his mind

Hosted by the Metro South Education District Office, and held at West End Primary in Lentegeur,it was designed to createasafe environment for boys to share theirchallenges and equip them with atoolbox of skills to navigate those challenges.
Grade 8and 9boys from high schools acrossthe metrowere invited to attend.
Theevent was acollaborationbetween two management and governance-support functions within the education district office, represented at each school—Safe Schoolsand Representative Learner Council (RCL).
The boys listened and tookpart in
discussions on fatherhood, personal growthand mindsettransformation.
According to David Marthinus, Acting Deputy Director of Management and Governance Support, the need for such aconferencewas gaugedbyidentifying severalkey problemareas: more boys than girls not completing their schooling; the mental healthofboys,who areoften told to “be strong” and nottalk abouttheir feelings, raising the boychild to become responsible men andgrowing up without positive role models.

The programme then moved to the RichinMind Movement, led by Shewaan Jumat, which focused on personal growth, mindset transformation and honest storytelling.
“Hiscontent was aimedatempowering youthwith makingthe right choices, supporting communities andpromoting education,” Marthinus said. “His stories drewonreal-life experiences, struggles, resilienceand personal victories.”
Themorning concluded with asession by Dr Shahieda Jansen, who focused on masculinity and the socio-moral personhood, drawingonthe ubuntu philosophy, whichenshrinessocial reciprocity, to develop the Umoya-Self framework.
“Thesessionwas lively and engaging, with good vigorousdebate leading to selfawareness,”Marthinus said.
DAY2:REFLECTIONANDRESILIENCE
Thesecond day began with areflection before Dr Alicia English focused on building resilience and “rewriting one’s story” through group activities. Jansen returned to conclude her presentation before proceedings closed with another reflection and on the John Lennon song “Imagine”. Theboys were told to imagine aworld where boys had positive role models that encouraged and supported them, Marthinus said.
Marthinus said feedback was good. Oneprincipal said the conference had meaningful topics that resonated with learners. Onesaid: “It was fun. There were alot of activities. It was interesting to interact with other studentstofind theirbackground out and the challenges they face daily.” The learner who uttered the opening quotation said: “We communicated with one another and we understand and help one another.”

Springbok Impi Alfonzo Franke says he never knew he had a“single creative hair” on hishead untilhis talent was uncovered by teachersat Wavecrest Primary School and Cedar High School.
The discovery led the “Mitchells Plain native”, as he callshimself,onapath that wouldsee him becoming proficient on both sides of the TV camera. Alfonzo Franke has been aSpringbok Impi for 10 years.
UNCOVEREDTALENT
Franke (38) grew up in Rocklands, but now lives in Muizenberg.
He says being close to the ocean, mountainsand nature shaped him from a young age.
“If you’re from acommunity that is close to theocean, mountain or any formof nature, there’s an element ofpeace that you find,” he said. “There’s asenseof environmental awareness thatyou grow up with.”
His creative journey beganatWavecrest primary,where ateacher named Shaheeda Duncan championed the arts andextracurricular activities.
The interest in art continued when Franke moved to Cedar High School.
“We were part of the first generation that propelledthe school intobecoming anartcentred school,” said Franke.
Ateacher at theschool played apivotal role in developing hiscreativity which wouldlater define his career path.
“He showed us the fundamentals of fine art,” said Franke, explainingthat agroup would stay behind after school to sculpt and paint.
Franke said he did not know he had any creative ability until those teachers investedinhim and soon his highest marks were forart
“WhenIsaw Icould get like 90% for something, Iwas like,I’m actually good at something. Iwasn’t good at maths or any of thesciences,” he said.

After high school, Franke pursued cinematography at AFDA for threeyears He went on to makeseveralfilms and musicvideos, including working on Youngsta CPT’s “YoungVan Riebeeck” video.Two of his mostrecent films that he worked on were screened at the Encounters Film Festivalthis year, such as “Amigothe Griot”.
These achievements opened doors in the rugby world, where he created content forthe screens during live matches and performances. It was through this work that he met his mentors; Marlon Kruger, the seniorbrandand marketing manager at SA Rugby andKirk KrotzofBlack and WhiteStripesCreative; both of whom would be instrumentalinthe development of theImpis.
LIFEASANIMPI
The birth of Impiscame aboutwhen SouthAfrica was preparing to face the All Blacks,who are known fortheir Haka. At thetime, there was no responsetothe Haka. The creative teamcame up withthe Impi routine,afiercer, more aggressive version of thetraditional Zulu dance.
Frankemade his debut as an Impi in 2017.Hewas directed to be fierceand intimidating, particularly towards the All Blacks captain at the time, Kieran Read.
Frankesaid he may have gone over the top, getting caughtupinthe performance Franke saidhewas so fiercethatimages of himappearingtoattack Readsoon went viral andbythe timehegot back to the dressing room “every journalist hadmy number”, he said laughing.
“The All Blackscaptain said he had neverseen anythinglike this before,”
said Franke. “Even the coach said he wished half of his teamhad that amount of passion.”
THEIMPISAREAHIT
From that match, theImpisbecame a regular featurebefore Springbok matches played on home soil, though Franke says thereistalk thatthis might soon change and thatthe Impis mightaccompany the team abroad.
Over theyears the other members of theteamchanged but this year marks Franke’s 10th yearasanImpi and he is the only Impi still remaining of the original trio
GOINGFORWARD
Franke, who has become afather of three since hisImpi journey began, said being calleduptorepresent the Springboksis one of the highest honours for him.
“It’smore than agig. It’smore than the five minutes of fame. I’mgoing out there to war for my country,”hesaid, adding that the Impis did promotional work on and off the field and are now apartofthe Springbok brand.
Franke says, he wants to use that platformtogive back.
LITTLEWARRIORS
Franke says the Impi warriors visit hospitals and foundations and thissparked adream in him for aLittle Warriors Foundation, anon-profit he plans to start with the aim of supporting children who are fighting battles, whether it be health or poverty. “Just to encourage that warrior spirit.Weall need to have this warrior spirit to fight through because life isn’teasy,” said Franke. “I feel like coming from Mitchells Plain, that already shaped me to become awarrior in life.”

The new short-termletting by-law proposed by the City of Cape Town will affect many property investors who have acquiredhomes and apartments specifically to let them out via Airbnb and other booking platforms —but they should think twice before deciding to sell theseproperties.
That’s the wordfrom Adel and Charl Louw, principals of the Chas Everitt Atlantic Seaboard and City Bowl office, who note that from 1July next year, owners of any property that is let on ashort-termbasis for more than 50% of the total annual room nights available can expect to paycommercial rather than residential property rates.
However, rather than making ahasty decision to sell these properties,they say, investors should know that thereisa compelling opportunity now to pivottowards long-term rentals, whichisasector currently experiencing significant undersupply in Cape Town.
“Thereisachronic shortage of long-term rental stock across themetro, particularly in central areas and along the Atlantic Seaboard,” they note. “Demand is exceptionally strong, vacancy rates are extremely low, and wellpriced,well-located properties are being let very quickly.”

The latest statistics show that while rentals in the Western Cape grew by almost 7% in 2025 to average between R11000 and R12 000 per month, thosein central Cape Town range from R13 000 to R15000 per month for one-bedroom units and start at around R19000 for twobedroom apartments, with prime properties in sought-afterareas often achieving significantly higherfigures.
“In addition, vacancy rates aregenerally well below 2%, underscoring the strengthof tenant demand, and rental properties in Cape Town also have good capital growth potential.
