“When shereceives donations, she always shares with other organisations and with everybody. She would always seethatall other NGOs also received what shehas beengiven,” Harris said. “And shewould say, ‘Councillor, I’ve got apack here for you as well’.”
Of Rafiq Larnie,Harris said: “He is literally teachingyouthhow to fish.”
Harris was referring to afishing programme, one of his many community projects.

The meeting, held at theRocklands RugbyClub, was called by the interim committee, which has been trying to get a Mitchells Plain Agrihub off the ground for four years.

“We’ve found alocation,” Sawule said, adding thatacontainer with refrigeration will be put in that space.

“Each community does things differently. So we don't come andimpose our ways, butwecan give advice,” he said.
The goal of theAgrihubs is to be selfgoverning, he said.
“We don't havestandard rules. The community should be the ones laying the
ground rules for themselves and we need it to be fair and inclusive to everyone that needs that help,”hesaid.

Theinterim committee successfully elected six new members representing the different areas at the meeting. Their rolewill be to recruit new members representing every area in Mitchells Plain.
They will also be establishing aTool Library for the hub members’ use, which will include basic gardening tools. Davids, who was reelected as secretary, invited home gardeners, or entrepreneurs who have enterprises related to urban farming, such as making jams, whether for themselves or for sale, to contact him. . Agruelling development programme has given 20 young people aboost in leadershipand resilience
The youth, from all over Mitchells Plain, graduatedfrom the Chrysalis Academy Community-Based Programme (CMP) on Saturday 27 June, at RLabs in Westridge. Programme director Chrizelda Tolo of Chrysalis Academy said thegraduation was significant because it wastakingplace duringYouth Month and in the academy’s 26th year of operation.
In addition to this, all the young people that were recruited completed the programme. Tolo commended them for their resilience, saying thatinmost of Chrysalis’ CMP’s thereare drop outs along theway.
“They came for recruitment onan incredibly cold day followinga weekend of storms. And they showed up again at thestart of the programme on 4May, also followinga weekend of storms.All 20 pitched up to make adifference and so we are celebrating your resilience, your discipline, and your determination.”

Student Cassie Classen described how the group grew together despite coming from diverse backgrounds.
“During our orientation phase, we became familiar witheach other aswell as our facilitators. It was awkward inthe beginning due to our diverse backgrounds, but as the course progressed we learned well together and we grew,” she said She described the details ofthe course.
“The orientation phase introduced us to many modules thathelped us learnmore aboutourselves,” she said.

Subcouncil 17 chair Elton Jansen acknowledged Woodman's role in bringing the project to fruition, crediting her sustained engagement withRecreation and Parks officials over thecourseof nearly ayear.
Jansen noted that councillors are required to work through formal administrativeprocesses —including requests forquotation (RFQs) and purchase orders —and are not permitted to interferedirectly in administration. Their role, he said, is to advocate.

“In today’s socio-economic state, young people’s parents don’t really want them to go and study —they must go and work, because financial income and supportis much needed in the household,”Tolo said.
“That was avery courageous decision. You disrupted apattern and chose longterm growth over short-term gain. And in doing so, you have opened doorsof possibility that will benefit not only your son and daughter today, but the generations to come.”

Therecentwaveofprotests acrossparts of Cape Town highlights growingfrustration amongresidents overissuessuch as servicedelivery, risinglivingcosts, transport fares, andbroader concernsaroundsafety and governance. Whilethe righttoprotest is afundamental part of ademocratic society, it is important that these demonstrationsremain peaceful,lawful, and constructive.
In recent weeks, severalprotests have drawnpublic attention, particularlyinareas such as Parklands, Claremont, and SeaPoint. Thesegatheringshave sparkedstrong debatewithin communities, with some residents expressing concern about the messagingbehind certainmovements, while others feel that protest action is the onlyway to have their voices heard.
What is becoming increasingly clearisthatmanyof thesedemonstrations arerooted in deeper socio-economic frustrations. Rising electricitytariffs, transport costs, housing shortages, andunemployment continue to placepressure on households already struggling to makeends meet
However, while the concernsmay be legitimate, the manner in which theyare expressed matters Thereisa risk that heightenedtensions andmisinformation can lead to fear,division,and even confrontation within communities. This is whyresponsibleleadership,clear communication from authorities, andcalmengagement with residents areessential during such times. It is also importantthat political andcommunity leaders avoid inflaming situations forpersonalor
political gain. Instead, efforts shouldbefocused on creating platforms formeaningful dialogue between residents anddecision-makers.
At the same time,law enforcement agencies have adifficultbut necessaryroletoplayinensuring that public order is maintained whileprotecting the constitutionalright to peaceful assembly. Abalanced approach is needed, onethatneither suppresses legitimateexpression norallowsdisorder to develop. Ultimately, protests areasymptom of broader challenges that requirelong-term solutions rather than short-termresponses.
