The family of Georgina Willimina Davidshad been counting downto amilestone celebration when she passed away 18 daysbefore her101st birthday

Davids diedon1 July, aged 100. She would haveturned 101 on 19 July.

Her daughter Rita Scheffers said the family had planned to gather at the youngest sister’shome,where Davids had been living, with children, grandchildren and afew closefriends.

“Mymotherhad alot of friends,” said Scheffers. “Shewas just aphenomenal woman.”

LATERYEARS

Born on 19 July 1925, Davids spent timeatMandalay Place, acomplex for pensioners, before moving in with Scheffers in Rocklands, where she lived for 20 years

In thefinal two years of her life, she movedtothe home of Scheffers’ youngest sister, in HanoverPark

In her lateryears, Davids used a wheelchair. Shenever neededglasses, however, rightuptothe dayshe died. She alsoplayed the keyboard andwas known forher still reprimanding her senior citizendaughters, aged79, 68 and 63, especially Scheffers for having a“built in microphone”

Thefamily said the messages of condolence since Davids’ death had been overwhelming. Themayor, who attended her 100th birthday celebration the previous year, also sent condolences.

Thefuneral service took place at Rocklands Baptist Church on Sunday 12 July.

EightkilledinCa Flatsshootings

Eight people, most of them young people, were killed on the Cape Flats in shootingincidents lastweek.

Seven people were killed and five others injured in twomass shootingsinTafelsig and in Philippi East on the eveningof Wednesday 8July, while another man was killed in trafficin WestgateonThursday morning, while on his way to work.

TAFELSIGSHOOTING

The firstincident took place at about 20:10 at thecorner of Laura Street and Eighth Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig. Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said, five men were standing outside atuck shop when armed men approached and opened fire. Three of the men, aged 18, 19, and 51, were declared dead at the scene. Two others, aged 17 and 22, were taken to hospital.

PHILIPPI EASTSHOOTING

About 20 minutes later, at about 20:30, policerespondedto ashooting at ahouse in Philippi East, Traut said. Seven people were shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20, died from their injuries. Three others were admitted to hospital.

The following morning, Thursday, 9July, atabout07:00, a45-year-old man was shot dead at thecornerofWeltevreden and MorgensterroadsinWestgate, police spokespersonCapt FC van Wyk said.

He wasalone in hisvehicle, a Hyundaimini truck,and was on his waytoworkwhen he shot multiple times,Van Wyk said.

People are still surprised to discover that Mitchells Plain has tennis courts. This despite theannual Street Tennis Festival, locally known as Westridge Wimbledon, taking place at the courts behind the WestridgePublic Pool for the second year.

Rodney Brown co-founded the event with radio presenter Aden Thomas, five years ago. It was initially played in the streets, reminiscent of days gone by when people didn’t have access to proper sports facilities. Lastyear the event was moved to the tennis courts, which were recently refurbished.

HOWITBEGAN

Brown and Thomas started the event to give young people in Mitchells Plain something positive to do during the winter school holidays, drawing inspirationfrom the Wimbledon Championships,which are played during the same period. The aim was to show that the school holidays could become associated with tennis, opportunity and community.

This year’s fifth edition coincided with Mitchells Plain’s 50th anniversary. It was organised through apartnership between the Rodney BrownFoundation and the

Mitchells Plain Tennis Club.

The City of Cape Town backed theevent, withboth theMayor andDeputyMayor attending alongside community members, parents, local stakeholders andyoung tennis players. The Mayor praisedclub members for taking ownership of their facility and acknowledged the club’s work in developing young players.

The fact that there is athriving tennis club in the areaisgreeted with equal surprise, said Mitchells PlainTennisClub treasurer Karen Arendse. Thenearly 100-member-strong club hasproduced twoyoungplayers who secured tennis scholarships at American universities.

One of those players, LeoMatthysen, who wasonce the top-ranked African player in the under-16 category, began playing at the club at the age of five under coachAndrewJaphta.Helater trained at the Tony Anthony Harris Academy in Sea Point andhas goneontoplay in the Davis Cup. He is currently studying in the United Statesona tennis scholarship.

Another player who started at the club at ayoungage is Mikaeel Woodman. He too secured atennis scholarship to an Americanuniversity recently.

Arendse said the club competes in the Cape Town Tennis Federation league, entering between five and seven teams

The2026 Street Tennis Festival was held on Tuesday 7July. Theevent also had indigenous games, suchaskerem, on one courtalongside giant versions of board games andJenga. Two jumping castles kept youngerchildren entertained, while Heart 104.9FMbroadcastlive from the entrance. Anothercourt was set aside entirely for tennis coaching, wheredozens of childrenbouncedballs between cones and through hoops under the guidance of veteran coach Clifford “Cliffie” Swartz, whom Arendse called “the most qualified tenniscoach in South Africa”.

REPAIRSANDUPGRADESTOTHECOURTS

The event has attracted alot of interest in thesport andthis hashelped the club to motivate for improvements to the courts.

Clubmembers repainted the white lines, whichhad fadedover time and with help from theCity of Cape Town, the facility manageroversaw the replacement of the perimeterfencing, sections of which were

nearly falling over and had gaps through which dogs were entering, Arendse said.

Lights were also installed at the courts, which has allowed the club to coach and play for longer hours.

“Especially now in winter, with having lights, we can play in the evening and in summer we can play until about 8 o’clock,”Arendse said.

“Those are the bigleaps we’ve had over just the pastcouple of months,” she added.

Walkabout in Morgen’sVillage

Councillors hosted aWalkabout with the mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis on Tuesday 7July. The Mayor, Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith, Subcouncil 17 chair Elton Jansen and wardcouncillors took partinthe safety walkabout in Morgen’s Village.

Much has beensaid about illegalimmigrantsand the fact that manyhavenow returned to their home countries.Whether oneagrees with thatornot is a separate debate. What shouldnot be ignored is that manyemployers foundthese workers dependable. They arrived forwork, wanted to earn awage, followed instructions,and often communicated effectively becausetheycouldreadand speak English. Those qualities matterinevery workplace.

This is not about praisingillegal immigration.The lawisthe law. It is about askinganuncomfortable question: whydid so manyemployers valuethese workers?

South Africahas thousands of hardworkinglocal employees, and theydeserve recognition. Butwealso

knowthattoo manybusinessesstruggle with absenteeism, poor punctuality, lack of initiativeand weak communication. Thoseproblems hurtproductivity andmakeitharder forbusinessestogrowand employ morepeople.

Perhapsinsteadofsimplycelebratingthe removal of illegalworkers, we should also askwhatmade manyofthemsuccessful in theworkplace. If ourown workforceadopted the same attitude towardsreliability, communication, punctualityand commitment everyone wouldbenefit. Thelesson is simple. Good work habits have no nationality.
