man that was shot and killed in a daylight drive-by in Tafelsig, during the school holidays, has been identified as one of the former accused in the Clare Swartz murder case. Swartz’s body was found in the Wolfgat Nature Reserve dunes, behind Hugeunot Primary School, last year. Several men were arrested in connection with her murder but later released due to lack of evidence, including the man who was shot dead in Tafelsig on Monday 5 January. Capt FC van Wyk, of the police’s provincial media office, said that the man was killed at 14:50. “This office confirms that Mitchells Plain police registered a case of murder, following the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old male,” Van Wyk said. He said that, according to witnesses, a car passed the man and the occupants opened fire in his direction in Tafelberg Street. “He ran and collapsed in Westham Street, Tafelsig. The deceased sustained gunshot wounds to his chest. He was declared dead by medical personnel on the scene. The motive for the shooting is unclear at this point, and no suspect has been arrested yet,” he said. CONCERNS ON SWARTZ’S CASE Lynne Philips of the Cape Flats Safety Forum, confirmed that the man had been one of the accused in the Swartz case. She expressed sadness that he “lost

FORMER CLARE SWARTZ MURDER ACCUSED KILLED IN TAFELSIG DRIVE-BY his life in a gang fight” because she was concerned that his death would delay the court proceedings in Swartz’ trial. “We hope that this case will be dealt with with the full might of the law and that all those involved are brought to book as soon as possible so that the family of late Clare can have closure.” A post by the Mitchells Plain United Resident’s Association (Mura) on social media, identified the man as Diego Blaauw. The post said he was arrested and charged in August for Swartz’s murder but was freed a month later due to a lack of evidence and was no longer part of the case. The post said “Swartz was found stabbed, half naked and dumped at the Wolfgat Nature Reserve on 21 August 2025. She was stabbed multiple times in the neck while her boyfriend, who was also knifed, managed to get away and flee.” It added that Blaauw’s death was as a result of gang violence. “The fight started with stone-throwing and later escalated into shooting,” the post said adding that video footage showed the groups throwing stones at each other before shots were heard. Last year, Swartz's father took to social media to vent his frustration at the accused's release. At the time Mitchells

Plain station commander Brigadier Brian Muller said the men were released but the investigation is ongoing and they could be rearrested once the detectives receive the results of pending DNA tests. Muller said the other two suspects are still in custody because blood was found on their clothes and shoes which were taken in as evidence. “We are therefore awaiting the lab results to link all the accused to the case. We are also waiting on the pathologist to confirm if the victim was raped,” Muller said. According to Muller the boyfriend of Swartz was with her when they were attacked. He was seriously injured and admitted to hospital but he could not identify any of Swartz’s killers. Swartz’s body was found on 21 August. TODDLER STABBED Also in Tafelsig, a toddler sustained stab wounds over the festive season. Sergeant Wesley Twigg of the provincial police media centre said a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened for investigation after a three-yearold was injured in Guava Street, in the late evening on 29 December. “We can confirm that a 39-year-old male was arrested,” he said. He said that during the arrest, community members “became riotous” and threw bricks at the officers. “A law enforcement officer was injured during the incident and a public violence case was registered for investigation. No arrests was made yet,” he said.

Lifeguards spring into action to save man Quick thinking and cool heads saved the life of a bather at Strandfontein Pavilion on New Years Day. Six lifeguards from the Strandfontein Surf Lifesaving Club sprang into action when they were alerted to a man lying motionless in the water in the pavilion’s tidal pool at about 18:00. First responders Khaalid Mosaval and Razaan Mohedeen swam into the pool and found the man laying face down in the water. They took him swiftly to the shore and with the help of fellow lifeguards Lisa Adams and Musa Cele they took him to the first-aid room. Two more lifeguards, Luqmaan Naidoo and Tanweer Absolom, assisted their colleagues to give the man CPR because he was nonresponsive, had no pulse and was not breathing. “After five cycles of CPR, the patient began to show signs of life and regained responsiveness,” said a post about the incident on the club’s Facebook page. "According to the fire department, had CPR not been started immediately,

the patient would not have survived. The swift and decisive actions of the lifeguards saved his life." LIFEGUARDS PREVENT TRAGEDIES The near drowning was among dozens of others, the City said in a press release, along the Cape’s beaches. Since October 2024, lifeguards have successfully rescued 23 people from non-fatal drowning incidents, the release said, however, five fatal drownings were recorded along the coastline, comprising

three bathing-related incidents and two cases currently under police investigation. The City said all fatal incidents occurred outside designated swimming areas marked by lifeguard supervision. Three of the drownings occurred over the festive period, beginning with a 15-year-old at Noordhoek Beach in November. An adult male also drowned at Cape Town Harbour in December. The most recent fatality involved a 39-year-old man at Strand Beach on New Year's Day. Analysis of non-fatal incidents revealed that most of the rescues — 20 out of 23 — were along the False Bay coastline. Strand Beach recorded four incidents, whilst Clovelly and Fish Hoek each saw four and three incidents respectively. More than half of these incidents involved children aged between six and 17 years.

Westridge library gets makeover

wo former Westridge High School learners are giving back to their alma mater by funding a revamp of the school library in a bid to inspire a new generation of readers. Roscoe Williams and his brother Athol Williams are leading the transformation project, which includes a fresh coat of paint for walls and shelves, new furniture, and an updated book collection focused on age-appropriate materials for students. The brothers, both Westridge alumni, are funding the project privately without relying on external donations, though they remain open to contributions, particularly for furniture. "We want to create an engaging and modern space where students can feel inspired and excited to read," Roscoe explained during an interview with TygerBurger about the project. The revamp aims to foster a stronger reading culture amongst pupils and provide better resources to encourage learning and personal growth. UNVEILING PLANNED AFTER COMPLETION The ongoing project is being carried out as quickly as possible, with an unveiling event planned once the library transformation is complete. However, the reveal won't take place before the end of February. The initiative is expected to benefit students by providing a conducive environment for learning whilst potentially inspiring other alumni and community members to contribute to the school. FROM PAGE 1 It says that most of the deadly violence in Beacon Valley and Lentegeur last year was between two gangs “whose numbers have surged as they absorb smaller gangs and capture turf”. The report quotes a gang member who described gangsters changing alliances after an attack on their biggest rivals. “They all understood that we have it better in our camp. We got more guns, more girls, more drugs, more money and more power,” he is reported as saying. The report identified the seven most prominent gangs in the province and while almost all of them had dealings in the Mitchells Plain, only four were named as having strongholds in the area. Two of these four were engaged in the deadly turf war last year. According to the report, the recent flare up in violence began with a change in dynamic brought on by several factors, including Covid-19. It described an “accelerating gang fragmentation” which has caused one gang to absorb its smaller rivals while targeting its biggest rival. The report said: “Gang-related murders had already doubled between 2020 and 2024. The gangs fuelling this relentless violence have been allowed to proliferate, steadily entrenching their power and reaching crisis levels of brutality.” ABUNDANCE OF GUNS The report said that another factor was the high number of guns gangs have access to, mostly due to corruption in official ranks. An earlier gang monitor report said that guns are being smuggled in from Namibia but this report clarified that only a small number of weapons being used in the warfare are sourced this way. “Some supplies are diverted from police and military sources,” the report said, adding that others are taken in robberies and from licensed gun owners,” the report said. “This exploits the absence of

a central database to track the amount of ammunition license-holders buy from different dealers, ensuring it stays within legal limits. It added: “Almost all major gang leaders reportedly have links to private security companies, which can legally purchase firearms and ammunition.” The report detailed eight other factors that has been fuelling the violence, including multi-national trading, corruption in police and government, the changing relationship between street gangs and prison Number gangs and money laundering through legitimate businesses in construction, property, taxis, casinos and private security. “This has a knock-on effect for the wider economy, as gang-linked firms can undercut legitimate businesses, property prices become artificially inflated, and government tenders are left uncompleted,” the report said. “A massive uptick in child recruitment, which began during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, has continued and intensified, with gangs recruiting in and around schools,” the report said. It added that: “Civil society organisations working with children and in schools in gang-affected communities say gangs are increasingly targeting children as young as eight.” The child recruits, mostly from impoverished areas, are attracted by the allure of easy money and false security and are used by gangs as “lookouts, runners, gun carriers and shooters”. “Magistrates, prosecutors and court officials have observed a sharp increase in children charged with gang-related criminal offences, including drug possession, murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, sexual offences and assault,” the report said. 12-point strategy The report did not only announce doom and gloom but also suggested a 12-point strategy, based on GI-TOC’s research, to mitigate the violence.

LEARNERS RECYCLE NEARLY 700KG TO CLINCH TOP SPOT

iesbeeck Primary School in Portland has been crowned champion of the Petco Get In The Loop Schools Recycling Competition, recycling 674,80 kg of materials to beat four other Mitchells Plain schools in the September 2025 challenge. The competition, supported by Petco, Grandmaster Ready D and his G-CAP programme, saw five schools compete to collect recyclable materials while teaching learners proper waste-sorting techniques. The initiative diverted 2,58 tons of waste from Western Cape landfill sites. Wavecrest Primary School finished second with 587 kg, while Caradale Primary School took third place with 487,10 kg. WINNING STRATEGY Grade 4 teacher Faaidah Kassiem explained the approach: "We sent multiple letters out to parents to keep the hype up, and it became a collaborative process between teachers and learners. I reminded them every other day about the recycling process of stomping on bottles, removing bottle caps and emptying plastic." She said other teachers helped guide students on proper techniques. "It became a whole collaborative process between teachers and learners. It boosted their confidence and enhanced their teamwork skills." Grade 7 learner Salmaan Hendricks said: "I always felt proud of myself… we had so much fun sorting the stuff." School principal Palie Gasant said the victory came at an important time for the school community. "This win comes at the right time as our school is going through an emotional period, with the loss of a staff member. We always knew we were

You could feel their excitement as they discovered how recycling works and why it matters. When we teach kids about environmental responsibility early on, we empower them to make better choices for their future and influence the households they come from. "This win for Liesbeeck Primary is a reminder of what's possible when schools, partners and communities work together." Mr Gasant concluded: "Our school has a unique culture and this makes us special. We are extremely grateful."

PUPILS LEARN RECYCLING SKILLS Throughout the campaign students received training on separating recyclable packaging from waste, identifying recyclable materials and understanding different waste streams. Workshops and demonstrations equipped learners with

SLICE OF LIFE

Birthdate surprises For an explicable reason, all of my seven daughters’ birthdays are clustered around or on special days. Between 1 December and 2 January our family celebrated five birthdays. Suffice to say, I am all festived out. We will have a few months break from birthdays before we celebrate my two non-Christmas season babies' birthdays — around Easter. A lot of people think I’m lying when I tell them about how weirdly clustered my children’s birth dates are, but most of their birthdays are truly on, or very close to, significant calendar days, such as a week before Christmas (daughter number two) and then 10 years later daughter number six was born on Aids Day (1 December). That’s two in December. Daughters one and five were both the second babies to be born on New Year’s Day at Mitchells Plain hospitals — 10 years apart — and both got prizes for their luckily-timed arrivals. And then, not to be outdone, daughter number four was born on 2 January, locally known as Tweede Nuwejaar — though this year the minstrel festival traditionally celebrated on that day was held later and on a different route, much to the annoyance of the participants. So, if you are not managing to keep track, that’s another three birthdays over two days a week after Christmas. Daughter number three was born on April Fools’ Day — after I went into false labour multiple times in the month before she was born (she pranked me even before birth).

MY CHILDREN NEVER SHOWED UP WHEN THEY WERE EXPECTED TO...

Her birthday usually coincides with the Easter period and the year she turned five, she unwrapped her birthday present and Easter chocolates on the same day. It's much less fun for her when her birthday falls mid-Lent. My seventh daughter was born five minutes before Workers’ Day on 30 April, 10 years and one month after her April Fool sister. I think she did it just to thwart her daddy’s planned witticisms because, as my labour approached midnight, he was already practicing saying: “May the first, be the last”. So, to recap; all my babies born in the same months (December, January and April) did so 10 years apart — and yes, all of my children were born naturally. And, just to freak you out more, here’s another weirdness — none of them, were born on their expected due dates. Not even the two that were induced due to my gestational diabetes. They were all either early (daughter number two) or late (all the others). This may be due to their size because they were also bigger than normal due to gestational diabetes. My smallest baby was daughter number six, who weighed a puny 3,8kg at birth. Their size confused the scans so they were projected to be older than they actually were in utero and therefore their estimated due dates changed with every doctor’s visit — and none of them were correct. The calendar-calculated due dates were also off because it has a built-in two week margin of error. My point is, my children never showed up when they were expected to, even the last two who were induced because they wouldn’t budge after the first induction attempts and hung around a day longer. Stubborn little buggers. But what is the point of all this, you might be wondering. Well, I'm not complaining or harking after ended festivities. WARRINGTON SWIMS FOR SPCA: Guinness World Record holder Howard Warrington’s epic seven-hour battle against False Bay’s unforgiving waters has netted nearly R65 000 towards the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s animal sterilisation programme in December last year. Despite enduring jellyﬁsh stings and battling challenging onditions for seven hours, covering more than 22 km, Warrington fell short of reaching Rooi Els. However, his efforts proved that sometimes the journey matters more than the destination. City boom brings infrastructure challenges A recent opinion piece praises Cape Town for being a better run municipality experiencing a strong property boom, but raises concern about infrastructure to cope with accelerating development, particularly around traffic congestion in the CBD and Atlantic Seaboard areas. Residents can however be assured that the City will continue making the necessary infrastructure investments and is currently refining the mobility plans to back this. In the short-term, an independent traffic engineering assessment is under way on tactical interventions to address event-related congestion in the CBD and Seaboard areas. Overarching strategies to assist with traffic flow in central Cape Town have also undergone two rounds of public participation this year, first with the draft CBD Local Spatial Development Framework, and in November, with the draft Mobility and Access Plan for the Cape Town CBD. This is a plan to transition to a CBD where access is easy and convenient, sustainable transport options are within short walking distance for all, the city feels safe and inclusive, and people of all abilities are provided for. The main ideas include improving walkability in the heart of the CBD and around public transport stations; promoting walking and cycling within the CBD by creating a decongestion zone; diverting through-traffic onto bypass roads; and better use of off-street parking methods. Granted, it will take time to implement and achieve

these outcomes, but this is a workable alternative as we head into the future. It is also a given that improved public transport is critical to the future success of the CBD and Seaboard. Thankfully, the building blocks for this are coming into place. A large portion of the current commuter volumes already arrive in the CBD via public transport, mostly around the Cape Town Station area, either by minibus-taxi, GABS buses, rail, and MyCiTi, which serves the CBD via the northern corridor along Table Bay, the N2 Express to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, and Victoria Road to Hout Bay and Imizamo Yethu. The progressive restoration of passenger rail, its future devolution for the City to take over operational control, and the ongoing expansion of the MyCiTi system — including the over multi-billion rand metro south-east route development — will increase access to scheduled public transport and make it the ﬁrst choice for traveling to the CBD. Likewise, major City investments on the Seaboard over the years — including the Sea Point Promenade and Green Point Urban Park — remain an excellent foundation for the future. There is also no false choice between redeveloping public land and channelling infrastructure investment into central Cape Town. Land release does precisely that: it rejuvenates precincts with private-sector led mixed-use developments that bring in critical revenue for the city, alongside all the economic beneﬁts and residential opportunities.

Halting state land release and planning approvals more generally, as the recent opinion piece implies, would only entrench the problem of high demand for limited housing supply which Cape Town experiences, like other thriving cities globally. As Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis notes, there are only two options: reduce demand — and with it the beneﬁts of economic progress and growth — or increase supply by building more housing. This is why the City is working on making it much easier to build more affordable housing, with Cape Town leading the way nationally on several initiatives. The City is already systematically identifying these violations of the existing rates policy and working on mechanisms to further improve compliance. Looking at the big picture, Cape Town has a South African record R40 billion infrastructure budget over the next three years, and a R120 billion ten-year pipeline. Whatever your income level, or wherever you live, Capetonians can be assured that Cape Town — as South Africa’s city of hope — is poised to keep making progress towards being an even better place to live in future, underpinned by transparent planning, record infrastructure investment, and clear long-term mobility strategies. Cape Town’s approach is neither fanciful nor reckless — it is a pragmatic, data-driven blueprint to manage growth, expand opportunity, and build a more inclusive, connected and resilient city for decades to come. Water shortages hit Cape Town as illegal settlements grow Our energetic mayor is showcasing a project to extract millions of litres of water from the Philippi aquifer — a major water project underway in the DA-led Cape Town. This in an attempt to "feed" the masses with water whilst the Rietvlei lagoon in Milnerton is a sewerage cesspool and thousands of new arrivals from the Eastern Cape are building illegal structures under Eskom’s high-voltage lines in Dunoon. We, the ratepayers, are constantly advised to reduce our water consumption and then slapped with a “basic charge" when we adhere to this call — from water to electricity to “street cleaning”. The disgraced ANC member Ebrahim Rasool, also the erstwhile premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008, famously made the iconic statement that "Cape Town is a home for all". Well in 2025 ALL have arrived and now Cape Town

has a major water shortage. Ditto for Overstrand Municipality when the Onrust lagoon has dried up, but the council keeps on approving new developments. Currently Tehran, the capital of Iran (our good friends), with an estimated population of 15 million, has run out of water as I write. Visit the link: Iran's largest water line is gone — Tehran faces mass evacuation as 15 million people without water. Since 2001, due to catastrophically bad policy decisions by the Iranian regime, Lake Umeria is dying and Tehran’s main water supply has dried up. On top of this Tehran’s population has jumped from 4 to 15 million due to unemployment and devastation of the agricultural sector in the north of the country. They have also built numerous dams in the rivers that feed into Lake Umeria, which has changed the lake into a salt bowl.

Tehran, the city, is now paying the price for these irresponsible policies and are now going to buy water from it’s neighbours and cannot feed its population. And how is Cape Town different from this apocalyptical scenario? When will this madness stop? The unbridled population growth of Cape Town, the densiﬁcation of neighbourhoods and the deforestation of the environment of which the Butler property is just another example. The current dust bowl on Bolandweg reminds one of the American Midwest dust bowl of the 1930’s. Where are our scientists in this scenario? I have concluded that our municipal officials actually do not understand what their functions are and are willingly compliant to the popular policies of the political leaders. FRANCOIS J. itchells Plain computer tech Craig Jaftha dreams of becoming a full-time writer. That goal is one step closer now thanks to the publishing of his first book The Cynewards and the Serpent Trials. The book is a supernatural tale that weaves together mythology, magical realism, Christian themes and personal experience. Prior to writing this novel, Jaftha, (29) from Rondevlei Park tried his hand at various fields, working in information technology, human resources, fitness, nutrition, and hospitality. The careerhopping eventually taught him something important; he enjoyed “creating something new from scratch". It was only four years after having this revelation however, that he chose to channel his creative energy into writing. "It was like I could just see these characters' lives unfolding in front of me," Jaftha recalls about his eureka moment. "That's when I knew what I wanted to do with my life." Growing up in Mitchells Plain after moving there from Manenberg at age six, Jaftha experienced firsthand the challenges that would later inspire his novel. Raised by hardworking, protective

parents in an environment where his father worked so much overtime that his young son barely saw him, Jaftha understands the complexities of family dynamics and personal struggles. Finding inspiration through personal trials "The inspiration for my book came through the experiences I've endured as well as those I've witnessed in my friends' lives," he explains. The novel's central concept of "Serpent Trials" represents the everyday challenges teenagers and young adults face – from relationship problems and parental expectations to family conflicts – that shape them for life. Jaftha's love affair with the supernatural began at age nine when he watched The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser. Since then, he has consumed countless horror and paranormal stories, each helping to shape his imagination. He even spent nearly a year as part of a game writing team with Ghana-based Letti Arts Gaming studio, working on a psychological horror game. The actual writing of The Cynewards

and the Serpent Trials began in February last year, though Jaftha had been brainstorming the story since his favourite series, Supernatural, ended in 2020. Balancing his full-time IT job with his writing passion, he completed the manuscript by July last year, spending additional months on editing before embarking on the publishing process in October.

CHOOSING ASSISTED PUBLISHING FOR DEBUT WORK Choosing assisted publishing over traditional routes, Jaftha wanted to ensure "the best possible final product" for his debut work. While he describes the overall experience as positive, particularly praising the layout and design process, he acknowledges there were "a few touch and go moments". "What you don't find out until you publish your book is that, that's when the hard part starts," he notes, referring to the promotional campaigns, advertising, and social media obligations that follow publication. The effort has paid off. Early reviews have praised the novel's plot, world creation, and unique approach to mythology. Reviewers have highlighted the book's major themes of love, family, inheritance, and friendship, with many

noting it as "a strong debut". For aspiring writers, Jaftha's message is clear: "If you have a story that's itching to be told, don't let anything hold you back from telling it. Even if it's just a couple of sentences a day, start writing." Currently the martial arts enthusiast and heavy metal fan is preparing for his first print run while juggling his day job.

There is a saying among writers: your first book teaches you about writing, your second book teaches you about publishing. For author Craig Jaftha, from Rondevlei Park, Mitchells Plain this lesson came all in one package. He wrote and recently published a fantasy novel with Christian themes, The Cynewards and the Serpent Trials, through Blue Weaver. The book is a supernatural tale that weaves mythology, magical realism and personal experience. Jaftha said the process was an eye opener in terms of publishing, adding the process was mostly positive. “I decided to go with assisted publishing because I was still new at writing, and particularly this calibre of project, and I wanted to put the best possible final product out.” Jaftha said from now on he would probably try the traditional publishing route instead. “Hard as it may be I would love to try traditional publishing. I’ve seen the additional work that goes into making one’s book a success after it’s been published, and I now have a deeper respect for the process. “What one doesn’t find out until after the book is published that the hard part has just begun. Launching promotions campaigns, advertising, finding the right distributors, social-media obligations and just plain building an online presence, definitely a lot of work one has to juggle with a full-time job.” PUBLISHING STREAMS Helen Holyoke, who does niche public relations for authors, publishers and book sellers said each publishing stream has its own pros and cons. With decades of publishing experience under her belt, she advised that authors do thorough research before choosing which stream to pursue. “One of the biggest pitfalls for independent authors is signing with a publisher offering ‘packaged’ publishing contracts that do not include essential professional services, such as proper editing, production and printing. A potentially strong book can be undermined by inadequate editing, which is detrimental to the author’s credibility and can be costly, often with little return on investment. “The main advantage of traditional Nuhaa Bardien at the launch of one of her books.

publishing is that the publisher cover the costs of editing, production and printing. However, debut authors often struggle to secure a contract, and those who do must work within the publisher’s schedule and creative parameters, including decisions on design, editing, cover and print runs. “Independent publishing gives authors full control over the process and the timing of publication, including design and presentation, but the major drawback is all production costs are carried by the author. “Assisted publishing can offer a middle ground, provided the services are professional, transparent, and deliver real value.” TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING Children’s author Makhosi Dewette Dludla, who recently published her fourth book, said landing a traditional publishing contract can be a lot of hard work. “At first I didn’t know much about publishing, so the journey involved a lot of trial and error. “I rewrote my work many times, asked for feedback and faced many rejections along the way. It seemed as if I had sent my first manuscript to every publisher in South Africa,” Dludla said. “My first book was published by Ndalo Publishers, but unfortunately the company later went into liquidation. Despite that setback, I kept going, and eventually my second publication lined up. Seeing my work published with Penguin Random House South Africa made all the challenges worthwhile.” Dludla’s most recent book, My Unicorn Speaks Zulu, was published earlier last year. PUBLISHING OVERSEAS For Goodwood fantasy and romance author Shameez Patel, the traditional publisher route looked different and came with other challenges. “My publishing journey has had many ups and downs,” she said, “and I am deeply aware of how this is only the beginning. I’ve come to understand that publishing success, whatever your version of success, is a marathon and not a sprint.” Patel has published five books, a fantasy series, The Selene Trilogy, and two interlinked romance novels, the most recent of which, Next Level Love, has just hit the South African shelves. She had eventually got her books on the shelves by applying to publishers overseas.

“I have had the privilege of working with two publishers and one distributor. I got my first publisher by cold-calling, emailing. I spent many hours researching publishers who publish in my genre and submitting to those who were open to unsolicited manuscripts. I was unagented at the time. “After securing a deal I went on to publish with a small press, and since the publishing territory was USA and UK they reached out to a local distributor to distribute my novel locally. “Afterwards I submitted a new manuscript to agents, whom I found via thorough research. “The one I signed-up with submitted my manuscript to the publisher I have currently. This publisher also works through a local distributor to reach a South African audience.” INDIE PUBLISHING For indie author Nuhaa Bardien the journey has been a lot of hard work. She had wanted total control over her romance novels Better Once Than Never and Till This Night. “I don’t want someone to tell me when I need to write or when I need to get edits back to them, and I don’t want someone to tell me, ‘no, you can’t have that new cover’ or ‘no, you can’t have that in your book.’ I thought, ‘no, I’ll do it myself’.” The drawback though is that Bardien has to do all the work, while holding down a day job and caring for her family. ADVICE FOR AUTHORS Despite their varying publishing routes all the authors agreed publishing is hard work and not lucrative, unless one is JK Rowling. “The journey to publication can take time, and there will be moments of rejection or self-doubt, but persistence is key,” Dludla said. “It’s also important to understand that being published doesn’t mean your work will automatically sell itself. As an author one plays a big role in marketing one’s book, and without that effort there may be little or no royalties.” Regarding the hard work publishing entails Jaftha said: “There will be days when one’s ideas run wild and days when they conflict with the plot, but seeing your completed work and hearing people’s honest thoughts are some of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever experienced. “If you have a story that’s itching to be told, don’t let anything hold you back from telling it.”

After four losses the Capetonians had to dig deep in themselves and players like Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen, Jason Smith, Nicholas Pooran, George Linde, Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch scored runs or took wickets when it mattered. "The four losses were not how we as defending champions would have liked to start, but we only need one victory to get us on track and to believe again. The win at Newlands against JSK was what we needed and the belief was back," says Rashid Khan, captain of MI Cape Town. Yesterday (Monday 12 Jan) MI Cape Town played against Pretoria Capitals, the same team who beat neighbours Paarl Royals at Boland Park in Paarl by 21 runs. MI Cape Town already tasted victory last year when they won, but since the inception of the SA20 three years ago, Paarl Royals only made the play-offs although no-one gave them a chance in the competition.
