17 TONNES OF FISH FOR ENDANGERED BIRDS IS NOT ENOUGH, SAYS FOUNDATION, AS SARDINE DIE-OFF IMPACTS PRESERVATION EFFORTS
FISH SHORTAGE PUTS STRAIN ON SANCCOB
African penguins remain critically endangered, with their population having declined by about 97% and fewer than 10 000 breeding pairs remaining.

or seabirds arriving at the Table View rehabilitation centre hungry, injured or weakened, recovery starts with something very simple: food. With the African penguin and Cape cormorant breeding season approaching, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) is preparing for what could be a challenging few months. The organisation has secured
about 17 tonnes of fish to help feed the birds in its care amid uncertainty surrounding fish availability and a recent sardine die-off along Southern Africa’s coastline. Sanccob says preparation is essential because it does not yet know what the coming months will bring.“The truth is simple: seabirds cannot heal without food,” the organisation said. 17 TONNES SECURED TO KEEP BIRDS IN CARE FED The organisation is currently

caring for a range of seabirds, from African penguins and Cape cormorants to larger species with very different dietary requirements. A large pelican currently in Sanccob’s care can eat up to 15 fish in a single feed. A Shy Albatross, meanwhile, can consume around five squid per feed. For birds that arrive sick, injured, abandoned or malnourished, regular feeding is a crucial part of their rehabilitation before they can

eventually be returned to the wild. But obtaining enough fish is becoming increasingly difficult against a backdrop of declining small pelagic fish stocks and growing pressure on marine ecosystems. AFRICAN PENGUINS ON BRINK OF EXTINCTION The African penguin was upgraded from Endangered to Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in October 2024.
Sanccob says the species has lost about 97% of its population, with fewer than 10 000 breeding pairs remaining globally. The decline has been linked to several threats, but access to food is one of the major concerns. African penguins depend heavily on small pelagic fish, particularly sardines and anchovies. Changes in where these fish occur can force penguins to travel further and spend more energy searching for food. TO PAGE 4

he Cape Town International Kite Festival will return for its 32nd year on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery, bringing together thousands of people in support of mental health awareness and the work of Cape Mental Health. Since its launch in 1994, the festival has grown into Africa’s oldest kite festival and one of South Africa’s most recognised mental health awareness events. Beyond the colourful displays and family-friendly atmosphere lies a powerful purpose: breaking down stigma, encouraging helpseeking behaviour and reminding people that no one has to face mental health challenges alone. “We are excited to host the 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival this spring – a time of growth, renewal and colour. The kite festival provides us with an awesome opportunity to brighten the sky with messages of hope, stories of resilience and to celebrate the courage and bravery of those who live with a mental health condition,” said Professor Ingrid Daniels, Cape Mental Health CEO. “The kite festival gives us the opportunity to host our international, national and local kiters who will bring vibrant colour and flair to the sky. It’s a time when Cape Town comes alive after the cold winter months to support Cape Mental Health in raising much-needed funds and mental health awareness.” #COLOURTHESKY THEME CELEBRATES CONNECTION This year’s theme, #ColourTheSky, celebrates the power of connection and the difference each person can make in creating brighter, more supportive communities. Giant kites from local and international kite flyers will create a

“It’s a time when Cape Town comes alive after the cold winter months” — Ingrid Daniels display of colour and creativity over the weekend. “#ColourTheSky perfectly captures the visual spectacle and emotional energy of the event. The beautiful kites immediately transform the blue sky into a bright, moving canvas that attracts participation and community spirit,” said Daniels. “It has universal appeal — colour speaks to all ages, cultures and languages, embracing diversity and inclusion without needing translation. Bright colours naturally trigger feelings of joy, optimism, hope, positivity and happiness despite difficult and challenging times. Colour overrides darkness and gives hope in the face of adversity.” SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Visitors can look forward to family entertainment, interactive activities, food vendors and fun for all ages, while supporting Cape Mental Health and its vital work in the community. The festival has become a powerful platform for raising awareness about mental health, encouraging conversations around emotional wellbeing and helping to reduce the stigma that still prevents many people from seeking support. Every ticket purchased and every donation made helps Cape Mental Health continue providing essential free mental health services to vulnerable communities throughout the Western Cape.

Veranderings in ’n dier se gedrag, oormatige speeksel, aggressie, verlamming of ongewoon mak optrede kan waarskuwingstekens wees.

Web platform gives NSRI urges water beach updates safety this holiday
B
eachgoers will soon have an easier way to check whether their favourite stretch of coastline is suitable for recreational use, with the City launching a new online platform providing up-to-date water quality and beach information. Cape Town Beach Alerts is designed as a one-stop source for information on beaches and tidal pools along the Atlantic and False Bay coastlines. The platform, available at Cape Town Beach Alerts, provides the latest and longterm coastal water quality results in a simplified, colour-coded format. Users can search for a specific beach or tidal pool and view its most recent water quality result, as well as results over the past 365 days. The system uses three colours to make the information easier to understand: green indicates results within the national recreational water quality guidelines, amber indicates a single failure, while red indicates two consecutive failures. MORE THAN WATER QUALITY The platform goes beyond pollution results, providing a range of information for locals and visitors planning a day at the coast. For each monitored beach or tidal pool, users can access the location where water samples are collected, the number of samples taken over the previous year, the date of the last failed result and the results of the last eight samples. It also provides long-term water quality classifications, testing protocols and details of any active environmental alerts. Weather information, including current conditions and a three-day forecast with wind direction and strength, is also included. Beach goers can check whether lifeguards are on duty, view seasonal lifeguard schedules and find out whether a beach is designated as a Blue Flag beach during the season. The City says the platform will eventually be expanded to include information such as dog-walking areas, coastal upgrades and marine-life sightings. ALERTS FOR COASTAL INCIDENTS The service is also available through the City of Cape Town mobile application, with users able to register for push notifications about environmental and pollution-related alerts. These could include incidents such as sewage spills, unusual marine-life events, a beached whale, a rabid seal or other events that could affect beach users.
Cape Town Beach Alerts is a new pocket-source for reliable and relevant information about beaches and tidal pools in Cape Town.
City Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Eddie Andrews, said the platform was intended to make technical water quality information easier for the public to understand. “Cape Town Beach Alerts makes complicated data about coastal water quality accessible to the public,” Andrews said. He said the City wanted the platform to become a trusted source of information for residents and visitors. “This is only the first phase of the webpage,” he said, adding that more information would be added during future development. WEEKLY TESTING ACROSS THE COASTLINE The City says its coastal water quality monitoring programme covers more than 300km of coastline, with a dedicated team collecting water samples every week from more than 100 locations. Testing is based on enterococci counts, an internationally recognised indicator used to assess coastal water quality and associated health risks. The samples are independently analysed by a laboratory accredited by the South African National Accreditation System for microbiological analysis of seawater. Andrews encouraged residents and visitors to use the new platform when planning trips to the coast. “Please save the link, share it, and use it for reliable and relevant beach information in your pocket,” he said. The launch comes ahead of the summer season, when thousands of residents and visitors are expected to make use of Cape Town's beaches and tidal pools. Go to https://beachalerts.capetown.gov.za and try it out
.
CAPE TOWN BEACH ALERTS PLATFORM WILL GIVE RESIDENTS UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON WATER QUALITY
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is urging the public to prioritise water safety as warmer weather and the school holidays are expected to bring increased water-based activities. The warning comes as the NSRI reports an increase in rescue activity along parts of South Africa’s coastline. NSRI Head of Communications Andrew Ingram said families, swimmers, boaters and anglers should take precautions before entering or spending time near the water. “Summer should be a time to enjoy the water safely, but increased activity along the coastline, dams and rivers can also result in more people getting into difficulties,” he said. “Many water-related emergencies can be prevented by planning ahead, choosing safer places to swim and supervising children closely.” KNOW THE RISKS BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER The NSRI is urging swimmers to use beaches where lifeguards are on duty and to remain between designated swimming flags. The organisation is also reminding the public to learn how to respond to rip currents. Anyone caught in a rip current should remain calm, avoid swimming directly against the current, float and raise an arm to attract attention. PREVENTION TIPS Where possible, swimmers should move parallel to the beach until they are clear of the current before using incoming waves to return to shore. People are also advised never to turn their backs on the sea, particularly when standing on rocks or fishing from the shoreline. Boaters, paddlers and those fishing from rocks should wear correctly fitted lifejackets. The NSRI said drowning can often
happen silently, meaning a child in difficulties may not be able to splash, wave or call for help. Parents and caregivers are urged to supervise children actively whenever they are in or near water and to keep young children within arm’s reach while swimming. Children should never be left unattended near water, even for a short period, while parents and caregivers are encouraged to put mobile phones away and avoid other distractions while supervising. Families visiting busy beaches and other public areas are also advised to agree on a meeting point in case a child becomes separated from the group. KNOW WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY The NSRI advises the public to avoid alcohol before or during swimming and boating as it can impair judgement and physical ability, and affect a person's ability to supervise children. People should save 112, the national emergency number, and the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre on 087 094 9774 on their phones before heading to the water. Anyone who sees someone in difficulties should call a lifeguard or the NSRI rather than enter the water without flotation equipment. The NSRI recommends throwing the person something that floats, such as a Pink Rescue Buoy, and encourages members of the public to learn basic bystander CPR. “Water safety starts before you leave home,” Ingram said. “Check where lifeguards will be on duty, make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency and save the relevant emergency numbers on your phone. Most importantly, please actively supervise children whenever they are near water.”

80 SENIOR BURGERS VAN RAWSONVILLE TOT GANSBAAI IN EERSTE KOOR BY WES-KAAPSE SENIOR-BURGER-SANGFEES
Table View Police Station received two trees from the Table View Lions Club as part of Arbour Month celebrations. The donation is aimed at adding greenery to the station, with members pledging to care for and nurture the trees as they grow.

FROM PAGE 1 They also face competition from commercial fishing for the same resources. Sanccob has warned that, if current population trends continue, African penguins could disappear from the wild by 2035. A FIGHT FOR FOOD BENEATH THE WAVES Cape cormorants, Cape gannets and other seabirds also depend heavily on sardines and anchovies. Sanccob’s recent reporting identifies competition with commercial small-pelagic fisheries, along with environmental changes, as significant pressures on seabirds. The organisation says combined sardine and anchovy stocks are currently at their lowest recorded levels. This creates a difficult situation for seabirds trying to raise chicks. Adult birds need enough food to maintain their own condition while also returning to colonies to feed their young. When prey becomes scarce or moves further away, the distance and effort required to find food can have consequences for breeding success and chick survival. There have also been developments aimed at improving access to food for African penguins. In March 2025, Sanccob and BirdLife South Africa reached a settlement with the commercial sardine and anchovy fishing industry that was endorsed by the state and resulted in a Pretoria High Court order establishing no-take zones around six important African penguin breeding colonies. The measures are intended to protect biologically meaningful feeding areas for the penguins for the next decade. The conservation groups have argued that protecting access to prey is essential

if the species is to have a chance of recovering. As breeding season approaches, Sanccob is preparing for an uncertain period along the coast — one in which the availability of food could make a significant difference to the seabirds depending on it. And for the birds already in its care, the message remains straightforward: before they can heal, they need to eat. ard 113 councillor Sue van der Linde has highlighted a range of issues affecting residents in her latest weekly update, including healthcare, public spaces, roads, development and preparations for the upcoming local government election. Van der Linde said she attended a Dunoon Clinic Committee meeting where a shortage of some medicines and its impact on patients was discussed. “The clinic is managing its available supplies as carefully as possible while this national issue continues,” she said. CLINIC SHORTAGES AND SPECIAL VOTES Van der Linde also assisted residents with special-vote applications following the opening of the application period on 21 September. According to the Independent Electoral Commission, qualifying voters have until 17:00 on 12 October to apply for a special vote ahead of the 4 November local government election. She said she had already received requests from residents needing assistance with the process. The councillor also raised concerns about the condition of the area around the Potsdam transport hub, following a meeting with several City departments. She said illegal trading, litter, graffiti, damage to a wall and the poor condition of a pathway required attention. “More departments will need to be involved in the repairs and improvements, so we will meet again shortly to agree on the work required and to start the clean-

Van der Linde also reported an incident in which she said she was confronted and assaulted by a homeless man known locally as Mark. She said she had laid a charge of common assault and that the matter would now follow the legal process. She added that concerns about the man's dog, Jesse, had also been raised and said a foster home had been arranged for the animal. DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLIC SPACES UNDER SCRUTINY The councillor said she also met with a neighbourhood watch to discuss strengthening relationships with local non-profit organisations. She further met with the Greater Table View Action Forum (GTAF) regarding the Flandorp development and residents' concerns about the project. Van der Linde said she now had information needed for a meeting with Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews. “I share residents’ concerns about the scale of this development and its effect on our ward, and I will press for clear answers,” she said. She ended her update by raising concerns about illegal dumping after receiving a video showing someone dumping rubbish in a park. “Dumping is illegal, and if you are caught, you will be fined,” she said, encouraging residents to make use of the free public drop-off facility on Potsdam Road instead.
Redevelopment of Tyberberg hospital on the cards
RICHARD ROBERTS The Western Cape MEC of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger, visited Tygerberg Hospital recently to discuss and provide an update on the much-needed redevelopment of the state-owned facility. Wenger and Nonhlanhla Nkosi, the department’s deputy director general, met with Marchel German, Ambassador of Global Gateway: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Ditri Zandrstra, Director of Public Finance: Invest International and Mohale Rakgate, acting head of Infrastructure Finance and Implementation Support Agency (Ifisa) — partners in the redevelopment — at Tygerberg Hospital recently. It was during this visit on
Wednesday 16 September, that the group signed a Statement of Intent. In an online post, Wenger noted that the work being undertaken is intended to help the department deliver highquality, specialised healthcare to South Africans, while also strengthening training for the next generation of health professionals. ONCE-IN-A-GENERATION TRANSFORMATION Wenger told TygerBurger that the redevelopment of Tygerberg Hospital is one of the Western Cape Government’s megabuilds for future infrastructure and is a once-in-a-generation transformation of healthcare in the province. “Redeveloping Tygerberg

is one of the largest and most technically complex infrastructure projects the province has undertaken. The Western Cape Government is working through the required planning and National Treasury processes to secure a sustainable
Public Private Partnership agreement. These requirements are essential to protect public finances and ensure the hospitals can serve communities for decades to come. “This is a long-term project and given the scale of the project and the multiple processes still under way, it is not yet possible to confirm a start date, final cost or completion deadline. However, we are working towards breaking ground in 2029,” said Wenger. STATEMENT OF INTENT Wenger said the agreement explores up to 45 million in proposed support, made available through the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs via Invest International, for health technology and medical equipment for the
future Tygerberg Hospital redevelopment. “The proposed support is structured in two phases: 15 million is envisaged for oncologyrelated health technology, with up to a further 30 million for advanced medical equipment for the main redevelopment. This remains subject to the required agreements, conditions, and governance processes. “While ground has not yet been broken, this is the essential work happening behind the scenes that will make the project possible. This proposed support would help ensure that the future Tygerberg Hospital has the technology and equipment needed to provide specialised, high-quality care and train the next generation of health professionals,” said Wenger.

‘SPOILED’ wins top award in Spain
A
documentary exposing the grip of offshore oil and gas giants on South Africa’s coastline has landed its biggest international accolade yet, taking home the Terres de l’Ebre Award at an overseas film festival. The South African short feature documentary won the award for Best Film Promoting Sustainability at the 10th edition of the Terres Travel Festival, a tourism and travel film festival with a focus on sustainability, held in Tortosa, Spain in September. SPOILED premiered in South Africa at a marine workshop in Cape Town in July 2025, unpacking preliminary findings from a Wildtrust-led project examining the environmental, social and economic risks of offshore oil and gas exploration and extraction in South Africa. Recognised as one of the festival’s two Great Awards, the accolade celebrates films that champion sustainability and inspire more responsible ways of engaging with the world. The award marks the biggest international recognition yet for the film, which profiles the coastal communities, fishers, scientists and activists standing up to the threat of offshore oil and gas exploration along South Africa’s coastline. The feature was selected from 157 entries submitted by the production teams from 29 countries, competing within a programme dedicated to films that champion sustainable tourism, conservation and responsible development. It was presented as one of three “perspectives on nature conservation” at a live screening event, part of the festival programme. The film takes viewers along the windswept coastline of the Northern Cape and the culturally rich Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, revealing the simple and
urgent truth that around 90% of South Africa’s mainland ocean territory is threatened by oil and gas exploration. Through deeply personal interviews with local fishers, activists, youth and community leaders, the film uncovers the cracks in the system that allow international oil and gas giants to pursue drilling rights in South African waters – including flawed Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), a lack of meaningful public consultation, and the leasing of ocean space without community consent. It is, at its heart, a story of resilience and hope, and a tribute to and voice for the everyday heroes defending their livelihoods, their heritage and the ocean we all rely on. AMPLIFYING VOICES “We are deeply honoured to receive this award. This film amplifies the voices of coastal communities who are too often ignored or sidelined in governmentlevel decisions about their ocean. I feel incredibly privileged to produce films that help give marginalised communities and nature itself a voice and a meaningful say in decisions that affect their ocean, their livelihoods and, ultimately, our collective future,” said Lauren van Nijkerk, campaigns and communications director at Wildtrust. The film was produced by Wildtrust and Love Africa Marketing, in collaboration with The Green Connection, and has already built significant momentum since its release, with more than two million views across social media, screened to 20 fisher communities reaching over 750 people across three provinces, and a Silver Award at the International Tourism Film Festival Africa this year. The Terres de l’Ebre Award adds a major international

accolade to that growing list. “Thank you for shining a light on this important South African story for our ocean. Through the power of storytelling and film, we hope to build greater public awareness, deepen understanding, and inspire people to value and support our natural heritage. A heartfelt thank you to our crew and partners for their incredible commitment and effort in bringing this story to the screen,” said Nicola Gerrard, film co-director and founder of Love Africa Marketing. “The film comes at a critical time for South Africa,” added Green Connection spokesperson, Neville van Rooy. “The Africa Energy Corporation owned

This also presents an opportunity for communities and potentially impacted stakeholders to speak up for their oceans. The hope is that this international honour will draw fresh global attention to the risks facing South Africa’s oceans, and to the communities most likely to be affected.” Information on how to have your voice heard is on the film’s website, stopthespoil.co.za. THINKING OUT LOUD
A woman’s safety is purchased with her freedom
Kommentaar // Comments LEWENSKIEKIE
Die vreugdes van ’n ‘Karen’ langsaan
Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo went for a run after work and did not come back. Her eight-year-old daughter raised the alarm. Her body was found behind a hotel in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park. Since mid-July, nine women’s bodies have been found across Ekurhuleni — beside the R21, in the veld at Olifantsfontein, in a river at Clayville, on roadsides in KwaThema and Dawn Park. Only four have been identified. Police say four were sexually assaulted. Notice the grammar of police reports: the women “were found”. The passive voice hides someone. These women did not simply come to lie there, partially clothed. Someone left them. A body beside a highway speaks to every woman: this is not your space. Police have urged women around Kempton Park not to walk or run alone, to avoid secluded spaces and exercise in groups. Any woman would be wise to heed this. But our safety is bought with our freedom, and a curfew is drawn around women’s bodies while whoever threatens them moves freely. The HSRC’s National GBV Study of 2022 found that more than 35% of women over 18 have experienced physical or sexual violence, mostly at the hands of intimate partners. We are told to leave the street for the room. The room has never been safe.
BLAMING VICTIMS FOR BEING IN THE ‘WRONG’ PLACE TEACHES WOMEN TO SHRINK THEIR LIVES
..
In 1989, Gill Valentine mapped a geography of women’s fear, showing how blaming victims for being in the “wrong” place teaches women to shrink their lives. She called it “a spatial expression of patriarchy”. Judith Butler sharpens the stakes: Frames of War (2009) asks when a life is grievable; Notes Toward a Performative Theory of Assembly (2015) writes of a plural right to appear — bodies claiming the street, demanding a liveable life. But a right a woman may exercise only in company, only in daylight, on approved routes, is not a right, it is a permission. Section 12(1)(c) of the Constitution guarantees everyone the right to be free from all forms of violence “from either public or private sources”. The duty is the state’s, not ours to discharge by staying indoors. In November 2025, during South Africa’s G20 Presidency — in which I served as Co-Chair of Women20 — genderbased violence and femicide were declared a national disaster after the Women’s Shutdown and a petition of more than a million signatures. Ten months later, a declaration is only as good as the road it reaches. Drucilla Cornell, in The Imaginary Domain (1995), held that becoming a person requires bodily integrity and the protection of an imaginary domain — the space in which we imagine who we might become. Fear invades that space. Urgency requires safety as public infrastructure, not private discipline: lighting that works, open land maintained and watched, patrols. Ekurhuleni has promised more metro police visibility; that must become permanent, not fade with headlines. The Clayville death was linked to the investigation only after police revisited their cases. Residents are right to ask why they were not warned sooner. The Acting Minister of Police called the thought of someone leaving for a run and never returning “too unbearable to think about”. Until a woman can run after work and come home to her daughter, we have not answered the disaster we declared. We have only described it. — PROF NARNIA BOHLER-MULLER

DF Akademie en die Hoërskool Melkbosstrand deel die tweede plek en Jan van Riebeeck is vanjaar se wenskool.
Desalination article gives incomplete picture I think the article “Desalination plant facing 5-year delay”, published on page 2 of the TygerBurger on Wednesday, 16 September, is somewhat light on the broader facts and may give an incomplete picture of the challenges facing the Western Cape's long-term water security. What is certainly true is that the Western Cape faces significant long-term water-security challenges. These are not simply a question of annual rainfall, but also of rapid population growth and migration, economic development, increasing water demand and the need to build resilience against drought and changing climatic conditions. Based on comments made by the Mayor of Cape Town on KFM 94.5, it appears that the desalination project initially associated with Paarden Eiland has been placed on the backburner. If this is indeed the case, the reasons deserve much more public discussion. I believe the original Paarden Eiland proposal should be reconsidered as part of a broader, integrated engineering and infrastructure assessment. The City's own feasibility study identified advantages for Paarden Eiland, particularly regarding integration with the existing potable-water system and land acquisition, but also found that the constrained site could accommodate approximately 70 ML/day. The City has also investigated Witzands at a substantially larger capacity. This demonstrates that there is no single obvious answer and that site selection requires careful
comparison of technical, environmental, financial and infrastructure considerations. The recent approval of major data-centre developments at the former King David Golf Club site also raises legitimate questions about the City's long-term infrastructure priorities. However, unless a direct causal link can be demonstrated, it would be inappropriate to claim that the data-centre development caused the desalination delay. The broader question of how scarce electricity, water and infrastructure capacity should be prioritised nevertheless deserves public discussion. A broader engineering assessment is required. Selecting a large-scale desalination facility along the Western Cape coastline requires considerably more than simply identifying a site close to the sea. The major criteria should include oceanographic and seawater-quality conditions; energy availability and grid integration; bulk-water distribution and network integration; topography and geotechnical suitability and environmental, socio-economic and stakeholder considerations. Research shows that different coastal regions present different advantages and disadvantages. The point is not that one location has already been proven to be the answer. The Western Cape should undertake a properly integrated site-selection process before committing billions of rand to infrastructure that may operate for decades. BEN GROENEWALD, Plattekloof
I am writing on behalf of concerned residents of Oakdale who feel that our community is being neglected and is deteriorating before our eyes. We are law-abiding residents. We work hard, raise our families, send our children to school, attend our churches and contribute to our community. Yet many of us are increasingly feeling that the neighbourhood we call home is no longer safe or suitable for our families. One of our greatest concerns is the growing presence of prostitution in our streets and surrounding areas. Residents report seeing women openly soliciting and, in some instances, being exposed in public spaces in ways that are completely inappropriate for children to witness. Oakdale is a community where there are homes, schools and churches. Our children should be able to walk through their neighbourhood without being exposed to adult activities taking place openly on our streets. We are not asking for people to be treated without dignity or respect. We are asking for the law to be enforced fairly and consistently and for the concerns of residents to be taken seriously. How did our community reach this point? Why are law-abiding residents being left feeling that they have to simply accept what is happening around them? Where are the authorities who are supposed to protect our neighbourhoods and listen to the people who live here? We are asking the City of Cape Town, the police and our local representatives to engage with Oakdale residents, investigate our concerns and work with the community on practical solutions. We want our streets back. We want our children to feel safe. We want our homes and churches to remain places of peace. Most importantly, we want to feel that our voices matter. Oakdale is our home. We have worked hard to build our lives here, and we should not have to give up on our community. When will somebody hear our plea? When will somebody come and help us? A CONCERNED RESIDENT, Oakdale

VILLAGER LOOKING FOR THIRD TROPHY THIS SEASON
Mixed results for locals in Gold Cup
AVRIL FILLIES he results of the first round of the three teams representing WP Rugby Union in the Gold Cup Competition on Saturday 26 September were a mixed bag. Villager from Brookside, Durbell from Durbanville and Schotsche Kloof-Walmers (SKW) are flying the flag for the city and were competing in the Southern Bracket in SA Rugby’s community club competition. SKW had to play second fiddle against the defending champions Naka Bulls in Pretoria when they went down 43-36, while Villager beat Young Leopards form East London 66-18 at Brookside and Durbell had to travel to East London for their victory of 38-24 over East London Police. SKW was the wild card in the competition and was selected on their performances during the Super League A competition of WP, while Villager and Durbell finished first and second respectively on the log. Villager is looking for their third trophy after winning Super League A as well as the Presidents Cup when they won the Top 8. The Gold Cup is seen as unfinished business and Villager wants to make amends for last year’s loss in the final against Naka Bulls. Naka Bulls is the number one club in the country with three consecutive wins and all the teams in the Gold Cup will have their work cut out if they want to topple the defending champions. SKW finished in the top five of WP’s domestic competition and earned the wildcard. This was their second encounter against
T
VILLAGER, DURBELL, SCHOTSCHE KLOOF-WALMERS FLYING THE FLAG Naka Bulls after competing against them in the Saldanha Top 8 Easter Tournament in the West Coast and the match was seen as a revenge match after they lost 28-24 in April. It was just a case of what the margin of the result is going to be and if it will again be less than 10. Like the encounter in April the rematch did not disappoint as both teams scored freely but the experience of Naka Bulls pulled them through for the win. This time the score difference was seven, again less than 10. Durbell went to battle against the second team from the Eastern Cape, East London Police, Young Leopards travelled to Cape Town for their encounter against Villager. EL Police won the Super 14 competition of the Border Super League and wants to be the team who will have the bragging rights in East London with their progress in the Gold Cup competition. The competition is divided into two sections, Southern Bracket consisting of teams from WP, SWD, Boland, Free State, KZN, EP, Griquas and Border. Curro Durbanville to host athletics Curro Durbanville will bring young athletes from across the region to the Curro Podium South athletics meeting, at Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday 23 October, and Saturday 24 October. Curro Durbanville will host the meeting on behalf of the school group. Primary-school athletes will compete on Friday, while the high-school programme will run across both days. The organisers describe Curro Podium as one of Southern Africa’s leading school athletics meetings. The programme will give pupils an opportunity to test themselves against athletes from outside their regular
school and provincial competitions. It will also bring primary- and high-school competition together under one event. The primary-school meeting starts at 07:00 on Friday and continues until 17:00. The high-school programme also starts at 07:00 on Friday. Competition continues on Saturday and is scheduled to end at 17:00. Although Curro Durbanville is hosting the event, organisers selected Coetzenburg because its facilities can accommodate a large interschool athletics programme. The meeting comes as schools prepare for the final term and the summer athletics season. Tickets start at R250.
