Amurder investigation is under way after the body of a 75-year-old man was discovered in his home in Sceptre Crescent, Flamingo Vlei, Table View on Wednesday evening
According to Table View Police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler an armed-response officer attended the property after a wellness request was made “On arrival the officer received no response from the homeowner He found a sliding door ajar and, after calling out and
receiving no answer, entered one of the bedrooms where he discovered the body of a 75-year-old male with his hands and feet bound The person was declared dead at the scene ”
Chandler confirmed the house was in a state of disarray and all relevant roleplayers were summoned to process the scene “A case of murder is being investigated,” she added

Cape Town-based environmental
group
Save a Fishie has announced the expansion of its flagship Coast 2 Coast campaign for 2026
What began in 2023 as a single journey along South Africa’s coastline to clear plastic pollution and inspire local communities will now be split into six focused clean-ups throughout the year making it easier for Cape Town residents and coastal communities nationwide to get involved
“Over the past three years, youth-led action has proven its power right here at home,” said Save a Fishie’s Zoë Prinsloo
“Our record 7,7 tonnes collected in 2025 shows how much South Africans care about our beaches and splitting Coast 2 Coast into six trips lets us make an even bigger impact in our neighbourhoods ”
In 2025, Save a Fishie mobilised volunteers from Cape Town’s beaches to other key coastal spots across the country, removing 7,7 tonnes of waste including plastics, fishing gear, lollipop sticks, bottle tops, and other harmful litter The campaign also expanded its education efforts, reaching thousands of local learners and families, sparking a growing culture of care for our environment
Breaking the campaign into six shorter journeys means:
. Timing clean-ups with tides and seasonal weather in our region
. Making it easier for schools, families, and community groups in Cape Town and beyond to participate
. Reaching more neighbourhoods during key community engagement periods
. Improving tracking of litter hotspots along our shores
. Offering more environmental talks and activities at local schools and events
“This isn’t just a clean-up it’s a community movement,” says Prinsloo
“By focusing on local areas throughout the year, we can work closer with our neighbours, adapt to changing conditions, and inspire even more people to protect our oceans ”
Save a Fishie invites everyone from Cape Town’s coastal communities to join the Coast 2 Coast 2026 campaign whether volunteering, partnering, or spreading the word “Together, we can keep our beaches and waterways clean and thriving for generations to come ”

With the Western Cape entering its most volatile fire season, the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) has confirmed that all operational plans, resources and partnerships are firmly in place to respond to rising wildfire threats.
The announcement was made during a graduation ceremony for newly trained firefighters held at the Ysterplaat Airforce Base on Friday 21 November
Despite the ongoing threats, the CWDM Fire Training Academy had reason to celebrate as 27 new firefighters joined the team The recruits completed extensive

training, including Firefighting 1 and 2, Hazmat Management, and, for some, advanced instructor qualifications
This financial year, the district has allocated R90 million specifically for fire prevention, suppression and emergency readiness a critical investment as the province continues to record an early spike in vegetation fires
Hot, dry and windy conditions have already driven multiple incidents, including at least five recent fires across the Cape Winelands
Cape Winelands fire chief Wayne Josias said the district’s collaborative systems are fully activated for the season ahead
“We are in constant communication with fire chiefs across the Western Cape All operational details have been aligned not just with municipalities, but also with our key partners such as the FPAs and CapeNature,” he said
The district’s newest cohort of firefighters, who graduated on Friday, will now join frontline teams across the region Trained in wildfire behaviour, suppression tactics and high-pressure emergency response, they add significant

capacity as the province braces for peak fire conditions
The Western Cape has seen a noticeable escalation in wildfire activity, with strong winds and soaring temperatures fuelling flare-ups from the Cape Winelands through to coastal districts
Authorities are urging residents,

landowners and visitors to remain vigilant, report smoke early, and avoid activities that may spark fires during high-risk periods As the fire season intensifies, officials say readiness, rapid response and community awareness will be essential to protecting lives, property and natural landscapes across the region

Blouberg’s beloved shoreline cleanup is back with a twist as the Bash the Trash: Treasure Hunt Edition takes place this Saturday 29 November Residents, families, schools and local businesses will gather for a morning of environmental care, community spirit and a fresh approach to tackling beach waste.
Organiser Jason De Freitas fondly known as The Bowtie Property Guy says the heart behind the event remains unchanged, even as the initiative evolves “Every Bash the Trash is a reminder that Blouberg isn’t just where we live, it’s part of who we are,” he says “One morning of unified effort can shift the energy of an entire coastline When the community shows up, the Bay transforms ”
Having watched Bloubergstrand’s coastline evolve over the years, De Freitas says the environmental challenges have grown Increased foot traffic, plastics and pressure on the natural environment continue to shape the landscape But so does a rising sense of ownership
“I’ve seen more community leadership, more people stepping up, more heart,” he explains “Blouberg is evolving, and so is the community ” Saturday’s treasure-hunt-style cleanup aims to make environmental care both impactful and engaging Volunteers will search for “treasures” anything from microplastics to unusual dumped items while learning more about coastline behaviour, wind patterns and local marine life

For De Freitas, these clean-ups are about much more than picking up waste
“Environmental care isn’t the responsibility of a select few it’s a shared duty,” he says
“These clean-ups restore pride and remind us of our own footprint They’re also a chance to meet like-minded people and figure out how we can all do better ”
He hopes the event sends a message loud and clear: residents don’t need titles or positions to protect their coastline
“You just need to show up,” he says “Small acts of care done consistently create a ripple effect that changes everything ”
Over the years, volunteers have found everything from nappies and plastic toys to lost wedding rings and even a door screen But according to De Freitas, the real treasure is the people
“The most surprising ‘find’ is how much joy people get from giving back,” he says
“The treasures aren’t always in the sand; they’re in the people standing beside you ”
Bloubergstrand’s ever-shifting winds also shape the experience
“The South Easter pushes debris into new hotspots each time Every clean-up feels like a different map,” he says
“But our volunteers read the coastline like locals who love it intuitively, strategically and with a lot of heart ”
“The Bay gives us so much giving back is the least we can do ”
De Freitas says his motivation never fades “Seeing children join in,

new residents discovering the joy of community and familiar faces returning month after month keeps the fire alive,” he says
Ultimately, he wants future generations to inherit more than clean sand
“I hope they experience a coastline that’s cleaner than we found it, a community that models accountability and a beach that still feels wild, free and full of magic ”
He reminds residents that ocean pollution starts long before waste reaches the beach
“Carry a reusable bag, say no to singleuse plastics, pick up a few pieces of litter on your walk, use a glass water bottle,
support businesses that care,” he says
“Plastic pollution isn’t solved at the shoreline it’s prevented in our daily routine ”
With the Bash the Trash: Treasure Hunt Edition just days away, Bloubergstrand is gearing up for another morning of unity, purpose and environmental action
As De Freitas puts it, being part of this collective effort is both “powerful and humbling”
“It’s special to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbours, children, retirees and businesses all united by purpose,” he says “This community doesn’t just talk about change it creates it ”

We all want to belong From the moment we take our first steps into school, society teaches us that our worth is tied to achievement, to being someone, doing something, building something We grow in years, in experience, in titles Somewhere along the way that hunger for belonging becomes tangled with the need to feel enough through what we do or produce
I have come to realise that I'm married to work Not in the romantic sense, but in the way it occupies my thoughts, dictates my moods and defines my sense of worth
For many of us this relationship starts innocently We pour ourselves into our studies, our first jobs and the careers that follow We tell ourselves it is ambition, that this is what success looks like Then life shifts From my observation the children one raises grow into their own people The career ladder one has climbed so relentlessly begins to feel less like an ascent and more like a treadmill One morning one wakes up and wonders who one is outside of one's job title, outside the roles one has played so diligently for years
..
SOMEWHEREALONGTHEWAY THATHUNGERFORBELONGING BECOMESTANGLEDWITHTHE
I see it all around me Friends who feel lost when they are not working Parents who struggle to rest because they do not know who they are beyond their families
Colleagues who measure their worth by their productivity And I see it in myself too I often say I am married to my work, half as a joke, half as a confession Work gives me purpose and stability It keeps me focused But it also keeps me busy enough not to think too much about the deeper, messier parts of life
That is the danger, I think , when we start confusing doing with being When our sense of worth is tied to what we do rather than who we are
My generation was raised in a world that celebrates hustle and glorifies busyness We were told to dream big, work harder and never settle I do not want to wake up one day and realise that I built my life entirely around my work, that I poured so much into becoming someone that I forgot simply how to be Work, like parenthood, can be a beautiful calling It gives purpose, structure and sometimes even meaning But it can also become a hiding place , a convenient distraction from the quieter work of being human There is safety in emails, meetings and deadlines There is clarity in schedules and targets The messiness of inner life, loneliness, grief, uncertainty, can always wait for later Except "later" always comes It comes when the office lights dim and the house is quiet It comes when promotions lose their thrill, when children leave home or when one's body reminds one it has limits even when one's will does not It comes when one finally has time and the silence asks "Who are you now?"
I do not have the balance figured out yet, far from it But I am beginning to understand I cannot keep defining myself by what I do So I am trying Trying to be gentler with myself Trying to measure my days not by how much I achieve, but by how present I am Because when the noise fades and the accolades mean less what will matter most is whether I still recognise myself Whether I can belong to me, not to my work, not to anyone else, but to the quiet truth of who I am becoming -NAMHLAMONAKALI

I walk my dog along the beach most nights and am increasingly worried about the ongoing bird flu affecting seabirds on our coastline
The virus has led to several bird deaths recently and I fear the risk of encountering an infected bird during my walks This is not only heartbreaking for our wildlife but also poses a potential danger to pets and their owners I urge fellow dog walkers and pet owners to stay vigilant, avoid contact with any sick or dead birds, and report sightings to local authorities Protecting our pets and preserving our coastal ecosystem must be a community priority WORRIED, Melkbosstrand

Muizenberg Beach had the honour of being the site of the launch of the City of Cape Town's Festive Season Safety Plan, on Tuesday 18 November.
The City outlined its plans for its overall festive safety deployment, beach safety and drowning prevention and traffic enforcement at the Muizenberg Civic Centre
The launch also highlighted lifeguarding and other proactive measures to prevent drownings, as well as enhanced roadsafety operations along major routes and in the vicinity of beaches and tourism hotspots
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis attended the event accompanied by Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith and Mayco member for community services and health Francine Higham
"In all, 680 lifeguards will be on all our beaches, at public swimming pools and all our tidal pools We will have thousands of law-enforcement officers along the roads checking and stopping vehicles and checking for drunk driving Also on our beaches we will confiscate alcohol We will also monitor the hiking routes and make sure families picnicking are safe "
Muizenberg is one of eight city beaches that received Blue Flag status in October this year, explained Lyndon Khan, the spokesperson for Hill-Lewis
"The public can further expect enhanced deployments on the City's roads, at busy beaches, braai areas and tourism hotspots, including Table Mountain Vehicle checkpoints will be in place across the

metro, and the Highway Patrol Unit will operate on major routes 24 hours a day
"Enforcement on the roads will be bolstered by an additional 40-strong N2 safety deployment This forms part of the 700 new City officers deployed since September, including dedicated neighbourhood policing in every ward "
The City said it would continue supporting the police in gang-violence hotspots, with over 1 000 LEAP officers deployed in shifts in those hotspots daily
As part of its drowning prevention campaign the City is deploying 340 beach lifeguards and 343 swimming pool lifeguards Lifeguards will be on duty at 29 different beaches, tidal pools, stretches of coast and all public swimming pools between 10:00 and 18:00 daily
The City's Identikidz child-safety project will be in effect at Cape Town's busiest beaches during the peak season
"This initiative tagged more than 120 000 children last summer to help reunite with caregivers if separated," Khan said
The City reminds the public of the four golden rules when in and around water:
. Swim only where and when lifeguards are on duty, between their red and yellow flags designating the safest bathing areas
. Beware of rip currents
. Don't swim under the influence of alcohol

. Always actively monitor children in and around water
"The City's drowning prevention partners include Lifesaving Cape Town," Khan said, "with 14 clubs along the coast, and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), which is on standby to make emergency deployments of rescue swimmers and vessels operating from eight base stations across the city "
. For more information on lifeguarding schedules visit: https://bit.ly/CT-BeachesLifeguard-Schedule

Does this sound familiar? Your home office has taken over the dining room, the children need more space to play, and you're constantly tripping over each other
You're not alone – many families are feeling the squeeze and wondering whether it's time to expand.
But here's the big question: should you go for a traditional brick extension or opt for one of those trendy modern sunrooms?
THEMONEYTALK: WHATWILLITACTUALLYCOSTYOU?
Let's be honest about budgets.
According to Claude McKirby from Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty, home extensions are smart
investments if you do them right
"It's all about balancing what you need now with what makes financial sense long-term," says McKirby
Remember those old-school conservatories that were freezing in winter and boiling in summer? Today's sunrooms are nothing like that They're properly insulated, designed for our climate, and won't leave you sweating or shivering
The numbers? You're looking at anywhere from R80 000 for a basic small

sunroom up to R350 000 for a decent medium-sized one
Want all the bells and whistles automated louvers, solid roofs, the works? That could push you towards R800 000
The best part? Once you've sorted out municipal approvals (if you need them), your new room could be ready in just three to eight weeks.
"Most sunrooms come as kits that are put together on-site, so there's way less mess and disruption for your family," McKirby explains.
BRICKEXTENSIONS: THETRADITIONALROUTE
Want a room that looks like it's always been part of your house? Brick is still king for bedrooms, home theatres, or kitchen expansions
But it comes with a bigger price tag. Basic single-storey extensions start around R250 000, with most projects falling between R400 000 and R800 000
Go fancy with high-end finishes or complex structural work, and you could easily hit R1,2 million or more
Time-wise, you're looking at minimum three months from start to finish often longer And yes, there will be noise, dust, and general chaos.
"It's definitely more invasive, so you need patience," warns McKirby
WHICHOPTIONGIVESYOUTHEBEST BANGFORYOURBUCK?
Right now, McKirby reckons sunrooms are winning the investment game

"South Africans love that indoor-outdoor lifestyle, and a well-done sunroom really captures that For a family room that brings in lots of light and connects you to your garden, it's often the smart choice."
But if you absolutely need a room that seamlessly blends with your existing house think matching bricks, integrated design then traditional brick building is your only option.
MAKINGYOURNEWSPACEWORK

THEBOTTOMLINE
"A good extension improves your family's daily life while adding real value to your property," says McKirby Need help with municipal approvals or finding reputable contractors? Contact your local councillor's office or check with neighbours who've recently done extensions.
Whatever you choose, how you design the interior will make or break the space Nobody wants another room that just collects clutter Smart design tips: . Zone it right: Use rugs and furniture to create different areas lounging here, dining there, maybe a work corner . Storage is everything: Built-ins, storage ottomans, banquette seating with hidden storage anything to keep the mess under control. . Keep it comfortable: For sunrooms especially, invest in proper blinds and make sure you've got enough ventilation.
