Bladesandskillunite atCapeKnifeShow

With the Cape Knife Show taking place at Tygervalley's Arena this weekend, excitement is already building among collectors and newcomers alike

But beyond the stunning blades on display lies something even more fascinating the craftsmanship and community behind them Knife making is far more than hammering metal on an anvil Each handmade knife represents precision engineering, metallurgy, design, woodworking, heat treatment and finishing all executed by the hands of a single craftsman A maker may spend anything from eight to 50 hours crafting one blade, carefully shaping, hardening, grinding, sharpening and fitting the perfect handle No two knives are ever truly identical

The encouraging news is that it is a craft anyone can learn with the right guidance

This year's Cape Knife Show is not just for buyers - it is for future makers too Alongside more than 45 established knifemakers, there will be suppliers selling steel, handle materials, epoxy resins, leather, belts, abrasives, tools and even machinery Whether you are starting with a file and sandpaper or ready to build a full workshop, you will find everything you need under one roof

FOUNDATIONFORFUTUREMAKERS

For those wanting to delve deeper into the craft, the Cape Knife Club (CKC) provides the perfect foundation Founded in 1991, the club has been active for more than 33 years, during which it has hosted more than 20 successful knife shows demonstrating its long-standing

“This is a trial deployment, and I am hoping to make it permanent,” said Ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde “Our beachfront is one of our community’s greatest assets, and it’s encouraging to see measures in place that promote both safety and environmental stewardship ”

OLDTABLEVIEWTOURISMCENTRE

TygerBurger also reported of the longneglected Table View Tourism Centre, which will soon have a new lease on life, with the City considering leasing the building to BlueCape, an ocean-sports and -safety organisation with a proven track record in beach management and industry development Locals say they are excited about the recent beachfront developments Van der Linde welcomed the development She told TygerBurger: “We’ve just had a really great meeting with officials and with the heads of BlueCape, who are looking to take over this rather dilapidated building I’m sure you will join me in encouraging these people to take this building soonest Not only do they offer ocean safety, which is a huge concern of mine and my neighbouring councillor, Jonathan Mills, but they also work with kite surfers and bring vital industry norms and standards They are an asset to our wards and I ask

So even if you visit the Cape Knife Show just to browse, do not be surprised if you leave not only with a knife – but with a new hobby, new skills, and a new group of friends

.The Cape Knife Show takes place in the The Arena of the Tygervalley Shopping Centre on Saturday 25 (09:00-17:00) and Sunday 26 (09:00-15:00) October Entry is R50 and includes a lucky draw entry

you to back them every step of the way ” In recent years the old Table View Tourism Centre has fallen into neglect and, with no formal management the premises gradually became a shelter for street people What was once a vibrant community facility stood vacant, its disrepair making it an easy refuge for rough sleepers sheltering from the elements While the building offered temporary relief for those without homes, its occupation highlighted the lack of proper upkeep and security, further contributing to its decline and sparking concerns among nearby residents about safety and the wasted potential of the site

RESIDENTREACTIONS

Mark Thompson, local kite surfer, said: “I feel much safer bringing my kids here now The patrolling really makes a difference ” Lisa Marais, Dolphin Beach resident, said: “The beach is noticeably cleaner, and the officers are friendly while keeping things in order ”

Johan Smit, dog owner said: “It’s great to see that they are not just enforcing rules but actively looking after the area’s environment too ”

Karen du Plessis, a frequent visitor said: “I’ve noticed fewer illegal tents and structures, which makes the beach more welcoming for everyone ”

R27 cycle-lane repairs underway

KAILINDANIELS

KA LIN DANIELS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

After months of growing concern from residents and cyclists repairs have finally begun on the R27 cycle lane between Sunset Beach and Dolphin Beach

The long-awaited resurfacing follows numerous reports about the deteriorating and unsafe condition of the popular route

Ward 4 councillor Anthony Benadie confirmed that construction work kicked off on Thursday 16 October after continued discussions with the City’s roads department “Over the past few months I’ve received multiple complaints about the state of the cycle lane, which is used daily by hundreds of residents for running, walking, and cycling When I joined a local cyclist for a site inspection we discovered several damaged sections, some so bad they were close to collapsing ”

CONTRACTORAPPOINTED

Following his report the City’s roads department carried out its own assessment and concluded that routine patchwork repairs would not be enough A contractor has since been appointed and is already on site

If weather conditions remain favourable, the resurfacing is expected to be completed within a month Benadie noted that the project is being funded through the City’s operating budget, rather than the ward

allocation, and that the total cost has not yet been finalised

Residents have welcomed the start of the refurbishment, saying it will greatly enhance both safety and accessibility along the busy coastal stretch, a favourite among commuters, joggers and leisure cyclists

Milnerton cyclist Raul Breaker said the upgrades couldn’t come soon enough

“Many of us use this route every day, and it’s become dangerous, especially near Dolphin Beach, where the surface was uneven and cracked It’s encouraging to finally see progress A smooth, safe cycle lane benefits everyone sharing this road ”

Lisa Marais, a Table View resident who cycles the route several times a week, said the repairs are a relief

“I’ve had to swerve around potholes and cracks so many times it was becoming risky, especially when there’s traffic nearby The upgrade will make such a difference for daily riders and tourists who use the coastal stretch ”

Johan Arendse, a member of a local cycling club, said the project shows the City is listening to the community

“Cyclists have been asking for maintenance for years, so it’s great to finally see action This route is one of the most scenic in Cape Town, and keeping it safe and smooth encourages more people to get on their bikes instead of using cars ”

Adisturbing video posted on Facebook showing a Grade 10 learner from Milnerton High School being attacked by a group of boys has sparked widespread outrage, reigniting calls for stricter measures against school bullying

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday 16 October, shortly after school hours, and the video surfaced on social media a few days later It shows the 16-year-old learner being physically and verbally assaulted while other learners look on The footage was brought to public attention by United Democratic Movement (UDM) member Nqabayomzi Kwankwa

He shared it on Facebook along with a statement from the victim’s mother

REPORTSOFBULLYING

She accused Milnerton High of ignoring repeated reports of bullying “My son, a Grade 10 learner, has been subjected to ongoing bullying, physical attacks, harassment and emotional abuse by a group of boys, including members of the school’s Rugby First Team “These 18-year-olds, who should be role-

models and leaders, have instead chosen to intimidate and harm others I am speaking out not just for my son, but every student who has been silenced or ignored The school has a responsibility to protect its learners ”

The video has sparked a wave of condemnation online

A concerned Trudy van Noie encouraged the family to “stand up not only for your child, but every student affected by bullying This isn’t just one incident; it’s part of a broader problem where schools often fail to intervene, fostering a culture where some students feel entitled to mistreat others ”

Milnerton police confirmed they were “investigating a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving a 16-year-old learner at a local secondary school,” said Sgt Wesley Twigg, adding no arrests had yet been made At the time of going to print Milnerton High had not responded to TygerBurger

Members of the Odysseus Motorcycle Club recently combined their love of riding with their passion for helping animals, raising a total of R13 000 for Fallen Angels Pet Rescue near Melkbosstrand “We believe in riding for a cause, and helping animals gives our rides real purpose,” said the club members On 12 October, a bright, sunny morning set the scene as the bikers gathered at N1 City before heading out to the rescue with donations in tow

BACKGROUND

Founded by Gayl Basson, Shireen Williams, and the late Lilian Williams, Fallen Angels has provided a safe and loving refuge for countless animals, extending its compassionate reach beyond

Melkbosstrand to areas like Table View and Milnerton TygerBurger reported last year (“Fallen Angels Pet Rescue in Melkbosstrand forced to vacate site”, 14 November 2024) the future of this vital sanctuary is now at risk

On 1 November 2024, after investing over two and a half years and nearly R250 000 in compliance efforts, the organisation received word from the City of Cape Town that their application for a Special Consent Use Permit had been denied

The property’s proximity to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, within a regulated 5km zone, makes the rescue centre ineligible for its intended use The City’s decision has left Fallen Angels Pet Rescue

with no option but to vacate its current location

Through all the uncertainty and waiting for news on their appeal, Fallen Angels has new shelter plans underway on a smaller property in Langebaanweg on the West Coast

Earlier in the month, the club handed over R7 500 directly to the rescue’s vet account at West Beach Animal Hospital

This was followed by an additional R3 850 worth of pet food, blankets, chemicals, and supplies, plus R1 000 in cash donations

A generous anonymous donor also contributed a collection of animal toys

WARMWELCOME

Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by Karen Stramrood, the farm manager, whose dedication and heartfelt appreciation set the tone for a meaningful

visit Members toured the rescue grounds, accompanied by wagging tails and playful paws a reminder of why their support matters

Special thanks went to Robert Todd, who coordinated shopping, transport, and negotiated discounts from local businesses Brackenfell Pets offered 5% off pet supplies, and HANCO Packaging contributed additional discounted goods, stretching every rand further

The day was filled with moments of joy and connection, including Dick de Kroon adopting a dog, giving one lucky animal a forever home

Fallen Angels expressed their gratitude: “A massive thank you goes out to Odysseus Motorcycle Club for their awesome donation towards our vet account and for coming to the farm to walk some of our furbabies ”

Laugh, dance, and sing along with Opera UCT’s ‘Die Fledermaus’

Opera and fun don’t always get invited to the same party People imagine serious faces, gold curtains and arias that last longer than a Cape Town cold front

But Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus is the opposite: it’s fizzy, flirty and gloriously extra the kind of night out where you dress up, laugh out loud, and nudge the person next to you because yes, that just happened.

This production is bang-up to date: the famous Act II party has been moved to a Cape-based jazz nightclub all shadows, delicious music and latenight swagger

The costumes are street-to-salon chic (masks welcome), the pace is brisk, and the vibe is “friends’ night out ” not “whisper and behave” Worried about language? Don’t be The music is sung in German, the dialogue is in English, and surtitles keep everyone in the loop (including multilingual moments so no one gets left behind)

If you can follow a meme, you can follow this plot: mistaken identities, cheeky pranks, stolen kisses, and champagne-fuelled chaos.

That old myth that opera is for older, wealthy,

mostly privileged crowds? Not this one

The cast is young the staging is proudly Cape Town, and the energy is for everyone date-night people, fashion people, music people, first-timers, and yes, families (under 18s are free just book on Webtickets to reserve seats).

Think of Die Fledermaus as your favourite night out with better melodies

It’s the same delicious mischief from rom-coms and club stories, just sung by voices that can lift the roof and a band that can swing.

Come as you are or come extra. Either way, you’ll leave smiling and maybe humming.

Opera UCT’s Die Fledermaus runs at the Baxter Theatre from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 October .Tickets range from R100 to R500 (u-18 free but need to book). Book at Webtickets

The world unites to mark World Polio Day on Friday 24 October, a day dedicated to raising awareness and funds to finally eradicate this devastating disease. The Rotary Club of Blouberg will be doing their part locally with a special awareness event at Bayside Shopping Centre on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October from 10:00 to 16:00

The club will feature a life-size wooden replica of an “Iron Lung”, the machine that once kept thousands of polio patients alive by helping them breathe when the virus paralysed their muscles The public is invited to spend a few minutes inside the Iron Lung to experience what polio survivors endured and to make a small donation towards Rotary’s global eradication campaign

“It’s an emotional and eye-opening experience,” said Helène Visser of the Rotary Club of Blouberg “Many people don’t realise how terrifying polio once was and that, even today, it still affects children in parts of the world such as Pakistan and Afghanistan By taking a few minutes to lie in the lung we’re helping people understand just how important vaccination and awareness remain ”

MOREABOUTPOLIO

Polio has been eradicated in most countries, including South Africa, but Rotary International, together with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Unicef, continues to raise funds to eliminate the disease completely Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, launched in 1988, has reduced global polio cases by more than 99%, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matching every $1

raised with $2

This year Blouberg Rotary has already contributed R5 000 towards the cause and has challenged other clubs in the district to match or exceed their donation

“There’s no cure for polio once it strikes,” added Visser, “but it’s 100% preventable through vaccination We urge every parent to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine and invite our community to help us make a difference Every rand counts towards a world free of polio ”

Several community leaders and invited guests, including Mayor Geordin HillLewis, ward councillor Jonathan Mills, Artscape CEO and polio survivor Marlene le Roux, and professors from Tygerberg Children’s Hospital will attend the event to show their support

The public is encouraged to visit the Rotary stand at Bayside, experience the Iron Lung and contribute to this lifechanging cause

In recent weeks, more than 24 abandoned bunnies have had to be rescued sterilised and cared for to prevent further breeding

Why this matters:

.Pet rabbits are domesticated animals, not wild They cannot survive on their own

.Many are run over by cars in neighbourhood streets

. They are easy prey and are attacked or eaten by dogs, cats birds – and even people

.Without care they get sick and die from untreated illnesses

.They suffer in extreme heat or cold, without proper water food and shelter

.Some people view them as pests, leading to them being poisoned or even shot

Dumping a rabbit is not only cruel it creates an end-

less cycle of suffering breeding and more abandoned animals

What you can do instead:

.Adopt don’t shop – and always sterilise your pets

.If you can no longer care for your bunny please contact a rabbit rescue or animal shelter as a last resort

.Rehome responsibly: post on South African bunny groups and rescue networks like Bunny Huggers SA and Bunnies South Africa

Abandoning your pet is not only cruel, it is illegal under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962

Let’s protect our bunnies and stop the cycle of dumping in Durbanville

Early detection key to fighting breast cancer

This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the provincial department of health and wellness is encouraging women to have regular checkups According to the department, about 1 500 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the Western Cape, with primary health care being a critical first step

It says the prevalence of breast cancer is increasing in South Africa, and globally Furthermore, women are diagnosed with more advanced breast cancer and have lower survival rates Therefore, women need to be diligent about their breast health, and seek help early, the department said in a statement issued on Monday Clinics play a crucial role in assessing and identifying warning signs and facilitating prompt referrals to sites for definitive diagnoses and further management Teams of professionals, including nurses, clerks, physiotherapists, genetic services, dietitians, radiographers, doctors, psychologists, social workers, and support staff, alongside community partners such as Reach for Recovery, Project Flamingo, and Pink Lady Apples at Tygerberg Hospital, lead the fight against breast cancer and assist patients throughout their breast cancer journey, the department says

ASTORYOFSTRENGTH

Parow resident Kulsum Abrahams (63) has been in

remission for 10 years In 2014, she experienced pain in her left breast Tests at Tygerberg Hospital confirmed that she had cancer

Abrahams underwent surgery and chemotherapy, enduring hair loss, fatigue, and painful sideeffects Today she volunteers with Reach for Recovery, counselling other patients

"Do not be afraid to ask for help Know your body Do selfexaminations regularly Live a healthy lifestyle,” Abrahams advises

She also praised the hospital staff

GETEXAMINED

The health department says in its statement that breast cancer is not just one disease, and every breast cancer patient needs to be treated individually, taking into consideration their physiology and the cancer characteristics

To achieve this, every patient is discussed at weekly virtual multidisciplinary meetings across the service ecosystem hosted by Tygerberg Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital, which bring together surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counsellors, and doctors from regional hospitals

Women who notice lumps or changes in their breast should visit their nearest primary health care clinic, or community health centre for free clinical screening, and referrals to higher levels of care

HERMANJANSEN

Newly elected Western Province Bowls (WPB) president, Tony Harland, recently “rolled out” his executive’s battle plan to combat challenges facing the sport Harland’s speech kicked off the traditional celebratory official opening of the WPB 2025-26 season in the Durbanville clubhouse on Sunday 12 October the first since the Covid-19 pandemic Key among these issues are dwindling membership numbers and financial pressures

Harland is a former president of Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC), the biggest club in the Western Province and arguably the most successful, financially and with achievements, on the greens He took over from Bellville’s Gerrit

van Milligen, who had a four year stint

Harland’s two year appointment in August is an historic one: As far as can be established he is the first member of DBC (established in 1948) to be elected as Western Province president

The opening day is traditionally hosted by the home club of the incoming WPB president

OFFICIALOPENINGSEASON

Harland said: “I am excited about today It brings back part of an old tradition of the official season opening which fell away during Covid-19 ”

Delegates from 22 of the 32 WPB clubs (three not active) attended the ceremony

“We have received apologies from many clubs, who had other commitments It is impossible to

accommodate everybody ”

Addressing financial challenges, Harland said the WPB executive have started with an overall review and redrawing of the budget

“I attended the Bowling South Africa (BSA) AGM the week after our AGM The overall financial position was the main area of discussion Concern was raised over the depletion of reserves and immediate cost-cutting action has been taken "

He said WPB was in the same predicament with dwindling reserves the last three years

“This trend cannot continue, hence the review of finances This exercise will be completed by the end of November,” he said

RELATIONSHIPS

Harland then addressed the sometimes tetchy issue of

interrelations within WPB

“The harder part of the goals set is that of relationships As an executive we need to ensure that everybody was on board to bring success both on and off the bowling green

“Many gaps were identified across the full spectrum of the bowling chain from executive level to standing committees to clubs and bowlers ”

Harland said membership numbers had been flat the last three years

“The issue with most clubs is not attracting new members but rather retaining members

"Are we getting close enough to our new members to make them feel part of the club?

“The perception of an ‘us and them’ must also be done away with ”
