UpgradedKillarney drop-offreopened

Residents can onceagain make use of the Killarney Community Recycling Centre after the facility resumed operations followingthe completionofupgrades and maintenance.

The City confirmedthatthe facility, previously known as the Killarney Dropoff, reopened on Wednesday 15 July.

UPGRADESCOMPLETED

The maintenance work included improvements to the facility’s infrastructure,stormwater management systems andoperational processes.

The City said the upgrades were carried out to support thelong-term sustainability of therecyclingcentre while improving theexperiencefor users.

Mayco member for urbanwaste management, GrantTwigg thanked residents andbusinesses for their patience.

Twigg said community recycling centres play an importantrole in helping residents dispose of wasteresponsibly while allowing the City to recycle.

“Community recycling centres give residents aconvenient andresponsible alternative to illegal dumping.”

WASTEDISPOSALRULES

Certain conditions remain in place.

Residentsmay dispose of amaximum of three loads pervehicle per day, with vehicles, includingattached trailers, limitedtoacarryingcapacity of 1,5 tonnes or less.

Customers are encouraged to separate and sort waste before arriving and to

Commercial customers affected by restrictions on garden waste disposal at drop-off sites can make use of the Killarney facility, where up to three loads per day are permitted.

Garden waste is currently accepted at: . Hout Bay; . Prince George Drive; . Tygerdal and . Killarney.

Each vehicle is limited to three loads of up to 1,5 tonnes per day.

Commercial customers who have reached the applicable daily limit can make use of the Coastal Parklandfill facility.

RESIDENTS’FEARSRESURFACE

Susan Jacobs of Duynefontein, said Eskom’s explanation was reassuring but radiation incidentsinevitably cause anxiety. “Whenever we hear words like ‘radioactivity’ or ‘radiation’, it naturally worries people because we live so close to the plant. We appreciate the explanations, but residentswill always want complete transparency.”

TygerBurger has previously reported on ongoing concerns raised by residentsover the long-term safetyofKoeberg. Those concerns resurfaced when the National Nuclear Regulator approved Eskom’s application to extend the operating life of Koeberg Unit 1by20 years, allowing it to continue operating until July2044.

Originally commissioned in 1984 with a planned 40-year lifespan ending in 2024, Unit 1received the extension following extensive safety upgrades and regulatory assessments.

Meanwhile, Unit 2remains offline for scheduled maintenance and longterm operation upgrades, while Unit 1 continues supplying power to the grid.

Amajortrafficenforcement operation on Koeberg Road in Milnerton last week sawseveral vehicles impounded, including unroadworthy taxis or thosethat had beendrivenrecklessly.

The early morning operation on Thursday16Julywas led by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, and City enforcement teams to clamp down on illegal taxi operations. Severalvehicles were removed fromthe road afterfailing roadworthiness checks, while motoristswithoutstandingarrest warrantswerealso apprehended.

Hill-Lewissaid: “Cape Town will be acityoflaw and order. Everyresidenthas a responsibilitytomake ourstreets safer.”

He added that both public transport vehicles and private cars were targeted.

“We’ve got anumber of drivers thathavegot outstanding arrest warrants that have been evading us formanymonths, sometimes years. We gotthem at this roadblock andnow they’re going to jail,” he said

Concerns around illegal taxi activity, reckless driving and traffic violationsinMilnerton havepersistedfor manyyears, with residentsrepeatedly raising concerns about safety, congestion and vehicles operatingoutside legal requirements.

Local residents said they hoped thecrackdown would bring lastingchange to the area.

Michelle Hans, aMilnerton resident,said commuters have become increasingly worried aboutdangerous driving.

“We see taxis speeding, stopping wherever they wantand putting other road users at risk. It is encouraging to seeenforcement happening, butitneeds to continue consistently.”

Another resident, Benny Williams, said thecommunity had been askingfor stronger action for years.

“People havebeen complaining

about unsafe taxisand reckless driving for along time. We need more operations like this to makesurethe roads are safe for everyone.”

The City said the Milnerton operation forms part of broader efforts to improve compliance with traffic laws in the city. HillLewis saidroad users must take responsibility for theirbehaviour and warned that drivers who putothers at risk would face consequences.

The City said similar enforcement operations would continue in areas where illegal taxi activity, unsafe driving and road safety concerns have been identified.

South Africa’s world-famous Rooibos is about to embark on itsmost extraordinary journey yet—to space.

In afirst for thecountry, Rooibosseeds will be launched to the InternationalSpace Station (ISS) later thisyear,wherethey will be exposed to the harsh conditions of space before returning to Earth in a pioneering scientific experiment that could shape future agriculture both on Earth and beyond.

The groundbreaking RooibosinSpace programme was officially launched on Thursday at Parklands College’s Innovation Centre in Cape Town, bringing together leaders from government, education, agriculture, academia and South Africa’s growing space sector.

The initiative, conceived by the South African Rooibos Council(SARC), is being delivered in partnership with MaxIQ Space and supported by theSouthAfrican National Space Agency (SANSA)

It marks the first time South African Rooibosseeds will travel to the International Space Station aspart of an international space research programme

The experiment combines space science with agricultural innovation while inspiring the next generationofscientists throughhands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

In October, Rooibos seeds will be launched to the ISS, wherethey will spend several weeks exposed to microgravityand space radiation

Once they return to Earth, scientists and learners will plant the space-travelled seeds alongside identical seeds that remained on Earth.

Researchers will compare germination rates,growth, resilienceand crop yield to determine howexposure to space conditions affectsthe indigenous South Africanplant.

The project places Rooibos alongside agrowing list of plants being studied in space as scientists searchfor sustainable ways togrow crops during future longdurationmissions beyond Earth.

The scientific investigationwill be led by learners from seven schools in the Cederberg, thebirthplaceofRooibos.

Working alongside local Rooibos farms, learners will collectdata, monitor plant development and analysethe resultsas part of astructuredscientific study.

Beyond theresearchitself, participating schoolswill take part in an extended STEM education programme designed to connect classroom learning withrealworld scientific investigation.

Theproject also highlights SouthAfrica’s expanding role in space science and innovation.

SANSA’sScience Engagement Unit head, Thandile Vuntu, said initiatives such as Rooibos in Space help develop the scientific skills needed for futurecareers while strengthening collaboration between government, industry, educationand research institutions.

Organisers said the publicwill be able to follow the mission through regular updates as the countdown begins for the Octoberlaunch, when SouthAfrica’s signature Rooibos will make historyby taking its place among the stars.

Residents of Waves Edge have welcomed news that funding has been allocated for the reinstatement of a fence alongthe R27, following growing concernsabout crimeand unrestricted access into the neighbourhood.

Agroup of around 30 concerned residents recently met with ward councillorSue van der Linde to discuss ongoing security challenges and other issues affecting the community.

One of the main concerns raised was the disappearance of the fence along the R27, between the Vlei and Blaauwberg Road, which residents sayhas left the area vulnerable to criminal activity.

RESIDENTSRAISEALARM

The missingfence has opened direct access from the R27 onto Rubens Roadand into Waves Edge, with residents warning that this has created an easyentryand exit route for criminals.

Resident Mike Beart said the lack of fencing had made the area more attractive to criminals.

“This has madethe area atarget for the criminal elements.”

Residents highlighted several recent incidents,including amurder, armed robbery and assaults on dog walkers. They also raised concerns about the theft of Eskom power cables fromRubens Road on two occasions, with onegetaway vehicle reportedly parked alongthe R27.

Beart said the reinstatement of the fence was needed not only for residential security but also for publicsafety.

Theresultisanenvironmentthat encourages illegaldumpingand generalneglect Additionally, thereare individualswho regularly burn copper and other materialsdirectlyalong the pathwayusedbyresidents. This behaviour is notonly hazardousbut also deeplydisrespectful to those living

nearby.Onmultipleoccasions, residents have had washing hanging outdoors, only forittoabsorbthe strong,unpleasant smell of smokefromthesefires— renderingthe simpleact of doing laundryfutile.

We have contacted the localpolicestation numerous times regardingthese incidents. Unfortunately, responses have been consistentlydelayed, often arriving long after the activityhas ceased. This lack of timely intervention further contributes to the persistenceof the problem.

Thesituation hasdeteriorated to an alarming level. Thesame pathwayisnow being used as an open bathroom, creating an environment that is both unhygienic anddegrading. This is notonlyapublic health concern butalsoagross violation of basic standards of decency andrespect forthe community.

In an effort to resolvethese issues, Ihavepersonally raised concernswith RonelleVoster, who worksalongsidewardcouncillorTheresa Uys. Iwas advised to contact lawenforcement forassistance.Regrettably, despitefollowing thisguidance,wehaveyet to receive anyresponse or meaningful support

Theresidents of theseplacesthought that allowing these monstrosities, willbringprosperitytotheir cities/towns, butwas devastated when theyheard that therewillbenowork forthem (these thingsrun on minimum staff), the environment gets destroyed, theypay morefor waterand electricityand thereisa deafeningnoise24/7. Iheard it when Iwas listeningtoashort documentary on the topic.And, on topofall this, we have to makesurewhatthe real function of thesecentres are.

So,citizens of Cape Town (and South Africa), it is timethatweget off of ourcomfortablecouches and exercisethe ourbrains. Thereare peoplewho need housing andweare wasting ourtax money on something that willnot only be destroying ourenvironment, but also cost us ourhard-earned money.
