Ahouse robbery was reported in Plattekloof Glen last weekin which jewellery and electronic devices such as cellphones were taken. The Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch says twosuspects were apparently involved.

"It is my understanding that when the son of afamily heard something suspicious going on and went to investigate, the robbers fled the scene seeing him, and ran across the N1 towards N1 City Mall. Iwas also on the road looking for them when Igot the news.

Avegetation fire on the Marine Drive side opposite Milnerton High School on Friday afternoon (16 January),causedtraffic delays and prompted aswift response from the City’s services

Thefire was initially reported at 15:25 by aMilnerton Crime Watch Trust patrolman,who was on proactive patrol in Milnerton Central.

Fire andRescue received the official call at 15:30 andpromptly dispatchedresourcesfrom several fire stations, including

two Wildland StrikeTeams from Bellville and Kraaifontein.

The firefighting efforts were coordinated by an Incident Management Team (IMT) Type 4.

By 22:20, the blaze, which primarily involved burning reeds, was fully extinguished.

“Thelarge plumes of smoke seen earlier were caused by thesereeds.Fortunately, no properties were damaged, and no

injuries were reported during the incident,” said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City's fire and rescue service.

Thefire caused traffic congestion along Marine Drive and surrounding roads in Milnerton Central as drivers sought alternate routes. Motorists were advised to exercise patience and caution when passing through the affected area.

Many individuals, organisations and businesses have come to the aid of displaced residents in Dunoonfollowing adevastating fire that destroyed hundreds of homesearlier this month, leaving thousands of people without shelter or basic belongings.

The fire, which swept through parts of the settlement on Friday 9January, was fanned by strong south-easterly windsand destroyed at least 632 homes. An estimated 2604 people were displaced, with children accounting for nearly half of those affected.

More than just practical improvements, these new facilities carry arich storyand honour the park’s history.

Perched proudly atop thebuilding isthe beautifully restored Temperance Flyer— atrain many remember fondly from the heyday of the former Ratanga Junction theme park.

This thoughtful design preserves Ratanga Park’s roots while moving confidently into the future.

The Temperance Flyer once brought joy to countless families winding through Ratanga Junction’s colourful landscapes. After the theme park’s closure, the train found asecond life at the Central Park Natural Goods Marketand special community events like the Carols in the Park, becoming asymbol of local nostalgia

However,years of use meant the train required significant refurbishment.

While awaiting restoration, it was safely storedunderground, its future uncertain —but its legacy alive in the hearts of those who remember itscheerful whistle.

Duringthis time, Andries Keyser,an engineer and owner of the Winelands Light Railway,envisioned anew tram custom-built for Century City.

Styled with nostalgic details —from an oversized headlamp to handcrafted flipoverbenches—the new tramoperates weekly and during special events, continuing the tradition of bringing delight to visitors.

AFITTINGHOMEFORTHETEMPERANCEFLYER

So what became of the Temperance Flyer? According to JohnChapman, DirectoratRabie, the answer came unexpectedly.

“We wanted to retain the legacy of the Temperance Flyerafter its retirement but weren’tsure how,” Chapman explains “When designing thenew ablutionand information facilities, we realised the flat roofstructure was perfect for installing the train —creating atalking point and paying homage to Ratanga Junction’s legacy.”

Restored meticulously by Keyser and repainted in thetraditional red, black, andgoldinstead of its original bright blue and red, the Temperance Flyer nowsits proudly atop the new building,watching overthe park it once helped bringtolife

The new facilitiesinclude an information andsecurity office, as well as public bathrooms —including wheelchairfriendly toilets —designed to support the park’s growing popularity.

Ratanga Park is alsoavery popular space forprivate events andproduction shoots.

Milnerton High announces 100% matric pass

MilnertonHigh School has released its 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric results, reflecting ayear of steady academicperformanceand consistent effortbyits learners andstaff.

The school recorded a100%pass rate, with 85,5% of candidates qualifying for Bachelor’s Degree studies.

The awards were officially opened by the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile, who reflected on therealities of policing overthe past year. He acknowledged the pressuresfaced

Ahouse robbery was reported in Plattekloof Glen last week in which jewellery and electronic devices such as cellphones were taken. TheMonte VistaPlattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch says twosuspects were apparently involved "Itismyunderstanding that when the son of afamily heard something suspicious going on and went to investigate, the robbers fled the scene seeing him, and ran across the N1 towards N1 City Mall. Iwas also on the road looking for them when Igot the news. "I found traffic services andhighway patrol on theN1, and when Istopped to inform them they were already informed by District Watch and had already been patrolling the N1 highway," says Deon Oosthuizen, vice-chair of the neighbourhood watch.

Die motoris het daarna speurdersbydie teenkorrupsie-eenheid genader en 'n lokval is in plek gestel.

Gemerkte kontantnote is aan die motoris gegee, en hy is opdrag gegee om ditaan die beamptes te oorhandig. Die beamptes het die betrokke dag opgedaag soos afgespreek is.

Die video wat opgeneem is, is glo voor die motoris van hul selfoon verwyder, waarna hulle die kontant aanvaar het. Albei verdagtes is op heter daad betrap en daar is op hul selfone, sowel as die gemerkte kontant, wat as bewysstukke sou dien, beslag gelê, sê die polisie.
