SaveaFishie marks50+tons

KAILINDANIELS

KAILIN DANIELS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

Cape Town’s much-loved ocean-conservation initiative Save a Fishie marked a major achievement last week; more than 50 tons of litter have been removed from the environment since its inception.

To celebrate, founder Zoë Prinsloo hosted a “mini clean-up” with her loyal group of long-term volunteers, affectionately called her “A-Team”, followed by cake and camaraderie

A showstopper by Michelle of The Cupcake Tarts, a giant cake topped with a figure of Prinsloo perched on a brightyellow refuse bag was created

“It feels surreal to look back and realise that together we’ve collected more than 50 tons of waste,” the proud founder pointed out

“Every volunteer, sponsor and supporter has played a part in this milestone I’m especially grateful that my mom, who has been with me from the very beginning, and my boyfriend, Dylan, could share this moment with me Save a Fishie has always been a team effort, and this milestone belongs to all of us ”

It was marked in true Save a Fishie style, with volunteers braving strong winds for a 30-minute microplastics sweep before tucking into the celebratory cake

AJOURNEYOFIMPACT

This isn’t the first time Prinsloo and Save a Fishie made headlines TygerBurger has followed her journey from its early days, reporting on her aweinspiring efforts to combat ocean pollution and her rise as one of Cape Town’s most determined young environmentalists Her accolades speak for themselves: several community- and youth-leadership awards, and she has become a familiar voice in conversations on sustainability, youth activism and plastic-pollution awareness Through school talks, community

Prinsloo is already setting her sights on the next goal

“Fifty tons is a massive achievement, but it’s just the beginning,” she said “Our aim now is to reach 75 tons within the next two years; and we know with the support of our community, we’ll get there ” With plans for future clean-ups, school outreach programmes and her signature blend of passion and positivity, Prinsloo continues to inspire She said: “Protecting our oceans isn’t something we do onceoff; it’s an everyday commitment Every piece of litter picked up is a step towards a cleaner, safer future for marine life ”

Residents of Wards 107 and 113 will soon benefit from an increased visible-policing presence, as five dedicated neighbourhood-safety officers (NSOs) have been deployed to the area, announced councillors Sue van der Linde and Jonathan Mills

“These officers will focus on foot and vehicle patrols, visible policing and support law enforcement in addressing anti-social behaviour, by-law enforcement and crime hotspots across our ward,” said Van der Linde

“The appointment of these NSOs is a direct response to residents’ concerns about safety along the beachfront, in parks, and in residential areas This deployment is a significant step forward for #SaferCleanerWard113 ”

The new NSOs will collaborate closely with the police, the community policing forum (CPF) neighbourhood watches and law enforcement, strengthening cooperation to create safer, cleaner public spaces

This local deployment forms part of a citywide expansion of policing resources, following the graduation of over 700 new City police officers on 9 September, marking the largest investment in new boots on the ground in over a decade Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, attended the graduation parade

“This new deployment includes dedicated neighbourhood policing for every ward, a special unit for the N2/Airport precinct, and enhanced protection for frontline service delivery teams in crime hotspots,” said Hill-Lewis

“It’s a clear message to the police, national government and criminals alike:

the City is stepping up to make Cape Town safer ”

PROGRAMMECOMPLETED

The new recruits completed an 18-month learnership programme, including: . Traffic-officer training (12 months);

. Metro police-officer training, including firearm competency (three months);

. Specialised training in neighbourhoodsafety officer duties, evidence-based policing, tactical training and EPIC system coordination and . Civic Academy modules

“Since as far back as 2018 I have been working to find a way to deliver on this goal,” said Smith, “not just to respond to complaints and undertake pre-planned operations across an entire metro police district, but to have a permanent presence in each ward The opportunity and funding just never aligned until now

“This investment is a declaration, a clear message to the criminals who have held our communities hostage, that their time is running out A line is being drawn in the sand between lawlessness and order, between fear and safety, between silence and accountability The City is stepping up once more, and every day we will work to ensure decent and good people can again own their communities and feel safe at home and on the street

POLICINGRESOURCES

The City continues to invest in growing its policing resources, including:

. More than 1 200 officers deployed

to major crime hotspots via the LEAP initiative in partnership with the Western Cape Government

. Further growth of more than 1 100 uniformed officers since 2021, including a new deployment of 700 more officers this Spring

. A major safety-technology investment for smarter policing, including drones, dash cams, gunshot detection, CCTV, dash cams, bodycams, automated number-plate recognition and the digital system to coordinate it all, known as EPIC

Mills said: “These fresh, young constables, along with their very experienced sergeant, will now begin community orientation to develop the operational plan Together with the teams for the surrounding wards, these longawaited boots are on the ground ” Van der Linde added: “As your representative I remain committed to ensuring every resident feels secure The arrival of these NSOs strengthens our ability to tackle crime proactively and build a safer, cleaner Ward 113 for all ”

Five new neighbourhood-safety officers are now on patrol in Ward 113
Ward 107 now has dedicated NSOs patrolling the streets

Orpheus McAdoo returns to the Artscape Theatre

MusicalbackatArtscape

Following a sold-out premiere last year, Orpheus McAdoo returns to the Artscape Theatre from 21 October to 2 November

Written and directed by David Kramer, this vibrant musical tells the true story of Orpheus McAdoo and his Virginia Jubilee Singers—African-American performers who captivated South African audiences in the 1890s.

At the heart of the production is Cape Town Opera soloist Conroy Scott, whose commanding performance as McAdoo brings both vocal power and emotional depth.

He is joined by Brittany Smith as Mattie Allen,

along with a dynamic ensemble that combines opera talent with seasoned stage actors, creating a richly layered theatrical experience

Blending American spirituals, ragtime, folk, and South African influences, the musical offers a soulful journey through a little-known chapter of local history Kramer’s script mixes historical accuracy with creative storytelling, highlighting the complexities faced by McAdoo and his troupe as black performers navigating fame, identity, and race in colonial South Africa. The show moves effortlessly between sweeping choral numbers and intimate personal moments,

anchored by spirituals once born of hardship and now sung in celebration. Audiences can expect a stirring combination of music, history, and heartfelt storytelling.

Kramer, known for musicals such as District Six

Opera meets fashion

Opera UCT brings a glittering twist to Johann Strauss II’s beloved operetta Die Fledermaus this October, celebrating both the composer’s 200th birthday and World Opera Day in a production bursting with couture, comedy and charisma.

Directed by Christine Crouse, this isn’t your grandmother’s operetta. With bold costumes, cheeky storytelling and Strauss’s unforgettable waltzes and arias including the famous “Mein Herr Marquis” (The Laughing Song) the production promises a feast for the senses. The show’s centrepiece, a lavish party scene in Act 2, sets the stage for a night of theatrical revelry

PERFECTINTRODUCTION

For the uninitiated, an operetta is opera’s lighter, flirtier cousin packed with humour, dance, and dazzling music. It’s a perfect introduction for newcomers, and a delight for seasoned operagoers. Celebrated fashion designer Gavin Rajah brings theatrical flair to the stage with daring, contemporary silhouettes and clever bat-inspired motifs (a nod to the title Die Fledermaus means “The Bat” in German), perfectly paired with Allegra Bernacchioni’s fresh and stylish set design Musical direction is by Jeremy Silver, head of Opera UCT, who says: “Fledermaus is pure, fizzy fun, but vocally and theatrically demanding. LEWENSKIEKIE

Nee Selfone? Tablette in skole?

Call on Kuils River business community to step up

A quiet concern is growing among community leaders and parents in Kuils River: a noticeable lack of structured activities and positive outlets for the area’s youth

This observation points to a deeper issue of youth inactivity, which community advocates warn is a fertile ground for increased crime, antisocial behaviour, and long-term social challenges

On any given afternoon groups of young people can be seen with nowhere to go and little to do While not inherently problematic, this idleness, experts say, creates a vacuum that can easily be filled by negative influences

When young people are disengaged, without positive channels for their energy and creativity, they become vulnerable Boredom can quickly turn into mischief, petty crime, or worse, as they seek belonging and excitement elsewhere We are seeing the early signs of this and it is a cycle we must break

The dangers extend beyond crime Inactivity contributes to poor physical health, mental health struggles like depression and anxiety, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness about the future The result is not only a threat to the safety of the community but also a tragic waste of potential talent and ambition

Whose responsibility is it to address this?

While local government and non-profit organisations strive to make an impact, their resources are stretched thin There is a growing consensus that a crucial partner is missing from the equation: local business

Businesses in Kuils River can no longer afford to focus solely on their bottom line while the community around them faces a dire need The health of a business is intrinsically tied to the health of its community A community plagued by crime, hostility,

The International Day of Older People is observed on 1 October each year On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna international Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly The holiday was observed for the first time on 1 October 1991 In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted The Political Declaration and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages

The number of older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) tripled from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021 Between 2021 and 2050, the global share of the older population is projected to increase from less than 10% to around 17% In societies with aging populations, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities

The capability to carry out essential functions and partake in everyday activities is influenced not solely by an individual's inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environments in which they reside Supportive environments such as family friends churches and local government play a pivotal role in assisting older persons to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age

Older Persons Week is celebrated from 26 September to 2 October this year

Spoil grandpa and grandma by visiting or phone them If they stay far away video chat with them But what about an “appreciation day”? Celebrate by having dinner together Maybe you can show them something new on the cellphone Most important, tell them regularly that you love them and pray for them every day

‘n Ope brief aan die Stad Kaapstad

and a disengaged youth is bad for business It can deter customers make it difficult to attract and retain employees, and create an environment of instability that stifles economic growth

The notion of corporate social responsibility must move from being a peripheral PR exercise to a core business strategy We are not asking for handouts

We are asking for partnership We need businesses to come on board and be genuine partners in community development

This partnership can take many forms: sponsoring local sports teams funding after-school art and music programmes, offering their premises for workshops, providing mentors, or creating dedicated internship and learnership opportunities for school-leavers The investment needed is not solely financial; expertise, time, and infrastructure are equally valuable

The long-term payoff of such investment is immense By helping to create a network of youth centres, sports leagues, and skills-development workshops to mention just a few, local businesses would be investing in a future generation of employees, customers, and community leaders They would help foster a culture of positivity, inclusivity, and pride, directly countering the allure of crime and antisocial behaviour

Transforming Kuils River from a potential hotspot of youth discontent into a hub of opportunity requires a collective effort

The youth need guidance and outlets, the community needs safety and hope Local businesses have a unique power and resources to help provide both The time for waiting is over The call is for Kuils River’s business community to step up and become the architects of a safer, more vibrant, and prosperous future for all FEZEKILE COTANI, Soneike, Kuils River

Artificial intelligence has officially entered the public safety landscape through the Northern Suburbs Camera Initiative (NSCI), an AI-powered project rolled out across multiple suburbs on Friday

A collaborative effort between Buzybuy, a local internet service provider, and key security stakeholders, the NSCI AI Building and Control Centre was inaugurated in Brackenfell, marking a new chapter in community-based crime prevention

Through this public-private initiative, Buzybuy aims to provide advanced AI surveillance tools to support smarter policing, improved crime detection, and enhanced public safety

The newly unveiled, state-of-the-art AI control room is central to the project and is designed to serve as a hub for neighbourhood watches, private security firms, and law enforcement agencies

“The vision for this initiative started in 2021, with the installation of motiondetection cameras in Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein, and Kuils River Since then, these cameras have led to numerous arrests and a noticeable decrease in property-related crimes,” said Nicholas Georghiou, chief operating officer at Buzybuy

HUMANACTIVITY

To date, over 600 cameras have been installed across the region

“With the integration of AI, the cameras are now capable of distinguishing human movement, activating only when a person is detected and sending real-time footage directly to the control room,” explains owner of Buzybuy Dale Bredenkamp

Each camera captures human activity and transmits snapshots to the central hub, where neighbourhood watch

members monitor activity around the clock Suspicious incidents are flagged and reported to security stakeholders via dedicated Telegram groups

COLLABORATION

Georghiou also highlighted that the control centre includes shared spaces for collaboration among neighbourhood watch teams and other crime-fighting entities

“Live monitoring plays a vital role in proactive crime prevention, and our goal is to foster strong cooperation between all parties involved in safeguarding these communities,” he said

Speaking to TygerBurger at the official opening, Cape Town Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, commended the initiative as a strong example of public-private collaboration

“This partnership brings clear value to the community It shows that when the private sector and public interests align, we can deliver innovative solutions that directly benefit the people,” he said

Ward 8 councillor Johann Loots says this community-based camera initiative is yet another great example of how resources can be combined to address crime and enable community safety by proactively monitoring different areas with the various camera options

Thanking the NSCI, Community Policing Forum chair Norman Landry says the facility will play a critical role in improving safety and security in the community

“Technology has become a vital tool in crime prevention and investigation and this camera control room will enable us to monitor and respond to incidents more effectively, working together with police and other role players We as CPF appreciate the partnership with the NSCI and we look forward to continued collaboration ”

Atotal of 10 teams will take part in the inaugural T20 Blind Cricket National Tournament from Monday 6 to Friday 9 October at Maties Cricket Club in Stellenbosch

The teams are the hosts Boland, Dolphins, Dragons, Eastern Cape, Free State, Inyathi, Limpopo, Lions, Titans and Western Province

"Maties has previously hosted the 40over national tournament in 2000 and to make the tournament a success we need assistance with catering and refreshments for all participants We specifically need funds to contribute towards breakfasts, lunches and suppers for 240 people, as well as for 260 people who will attend the final lunch

The refreshments include water and energy drinks for all participants, consisting of players, officials and volunteers," says Frankford Williams, president of Blind Cricket South Africa Teams will be residing at the Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville South and will travel daily to Stellenbosch

"The Dolphins from KZN are the defending champions and won the last tournament in April/May 2024 in Potchefstroom The Lions are the most successful team, having won the tournament four times," says Williams

COSTSINVOLVED

The costs for Boland and Western Province is between R30 000 and R50 000, which includes transport and attire For up-country teams, the costs range from R60 000 for transport up to over R100 000 if they fly, purchase apparel, and hire a bus in Cape Town

LIONS AIM FOR RECORD FOURTH WIN AT BLIND CRICKET T20

for partners to assist us financially or with goods and services to prepare our team for the 2027 T20World Cup in Lahore and Multan in Pakistan

“We also believe it is important to offer prizes, such as cash or goods, for the Man of the Match Awards

“Players also appreciate a trophy to remember the achievements during the tournament, as most of them come from a poor background are unemployed or in a low-income job and often depend on social grants

“Tangible prizes like a new bag, bat, gloves or a pair of trainers/spikes would make a significant difference in their ability to play the game

"For many, cricket is more than just a sport, it is an outlet and a place where they feel a sense of purpose and belonging, which they may not find in other parts of their lives At the conclusion of the tournament, a 30-35 man squad will be announced, and this team will be the focus of our preparations for the 2027 T20 World Cup," he says
